…Read More

Relaxed atmosphere with great food
Samsen 泰館
2021-06-13
This location is way bigger than the wan chai location and much more comfortable for a sit down lunch to catch up with friends. I had a much better experience here than the wan chai location and was much happier to pay this price for Thai food with this kind of atmosphere and comfort. I think my first experience at samsen was tainted in wan chai because I had to wait in line for a long time and felt that I was overpaying for a plate of fried rice. However, my experience at the sheung wan location was much different. We ordered the crab fried rice, Khao soi, fish cakes and coconut ice cream for dessert. Every thing was delicious! But I would say the fried rice was the stand out. Generous amount of crab meat and well cooked fried rice was worth the price this time. The khao soi was quite good as well but it was definitely very heavy so it’s a good option to share this dish. The coconut ice cream was a refreshing way to end the meal! The addition of corn and pieces of coconut added textures and mild and sweet flavours to the ice cream which I really enjoyed! Overall, a good experience in atmosphere and food. Though a bit pricey for Thai food, I think it is worth it. …Read More

Cozy cafe but average food
URBAN COFFEE ROASTER (Fashion Walk)
2021-05-15
This is a great cafe if you’re looking for a casual, relaxing vibe in causeway bay. I enjoyed the decor and atmosphere of the place even though it was quite busy when I went. They also have really nicely designed merch like t-shirts and they also sell their own coffee beans I believe. Though the atmosphere is nice, the food itself was only okay. I order the pull pork burger and a scallop tartare. While the dishes were nicely presented, the taste was only so-so. The scallop tartare was nicely balanced with beets and green apples, both in flavour and texture. However, the pulled pork burger was more of a let down. The bun was the biggest disappointment as it was crunchy yet dry, and didn’t have the texture of bread. The outside is toasted but it seemed to just disintegrate as I bit into it. I ended up just eating the fillings and not the bun. The pulled pork itself was ok. Slightly sweeter than I would like but it was acceptable. …Read More

Not worth the queue orprice
Bakehouse
2021-05-14
I am probably in the minority, but I don’t understand the hype around bakehouse. I’ve been twice — once lining up and the other without. Both times I got the sourdough egg tart which is in fact their best pastry. The custard is sweet and the pastry crust is flaky — however it is definitely more like a Portuguese tart than an egg tart. The apple crumble danish is just not very good. It’s very buttery but not in a good way (my mouth was just very oily after taking my first bite). It was also very chewy and hard. Not sure if this was an old batch they had on hand but I bought it at around 3pm. I also tried one of their chocolate cookies, which crumbled in my hand as I picked it up to eat. While I appreciate chewy cookies, this was mostly dry and the flavour of the chocolate wasn’t very pleasant. I’ve tried one of their savoury items — the quiche Lorraine which I quite enjoyed. The filing was well balanced and the crust was light and flaky. I think I would enjoy this place more if it weren’t for the price and the overhype. If I were to come here again I wouldn’t wait in line and once I get to the cashier I would only get the egg tart. …Read More

Solid Thai food lunch option
Kin Kao
2021-05-11
Having lived in wan chai for so long, there is never a lack of restaurants to choose from. I had always walked by Kin kao but never found a reason to try it since there were so many other Thai/Vietnamese places to choose from. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of food and taste. I ordered the boat noodles off the lunch set. For $78 it was not bad, however, the portion was a bit small for the price. The noodles were cooked well — soft and chewy. Each bite was coated in the soup which was well seasoned and just salty enough. I was also happy with the ratio of noodles to pork. additionally, I also ordered the deep fried chicken wings which were not as great as the noodles. $88 for 8 wings is quite pricey for the size of the wings and average taste. …Read More

Safe choice for Indian cuisine
Chaiwala
2021-05-09
Went here for the first time for a friend’s birthday dinner. I had heard of this place before as part of the pirata group so I had a relatively high expectation going in. We ordered samosa chaat, tandoori chicken and salmon fish curry and a crab dish. Nothing was overwhelmingly spectacular in my opinion but all solid choices. Perhaps my favourite was the fish curry — it was flavourful and rich in coconut milk. Both the tandoori chicken and salmon was tender though nothing too special. The samosa chaat was pretty good, and so was the crab dish — basically you get what you expect. I think the portions of each of these dishes was quite small so we ended up having to order multiples of each. I have to say the drinks was really disappointing. I ordered a piña colada like drink which came in a really interestingly presented bottle. Though the exterior was inviting, the drink itself was not very good. Though I understood it was a piña colada with a twist, nothing about it resembled a piña colada. Also the bottle was quite large but the amount of liquid in the bottle was deceivingly little. The service was good and accommodating for our large party. I thought the price was a bit high for the amount of food I was getting per plate. Overall, the restaurant had a good atmosphere, and it’s suitable for a casual dinner. However, it would not be at the top of my list if I was asked to give recommendations for Indian food in Hong Kong. …Read More

秘製豬扒令人失望
Wah Heung Yuen
2021-05-02
…Read More

Delicious Nepalese food
Manakamana Nepali Restaurant
2021-04-14
First time properly having Nepalese food and this little gem of a restaurant did not disappoint. The only kind of Nepalese food I’ve had thus far were momos (Nepalese dumplings) so didn’t have much of an expectation. We were unsure what to order and the server so kindly suggested the lamb khukuri in addition to momos. We also ordered a portion of garlic naan and samosa chaat. Everything was very delicious. The lamb khukuri was flavourful and great for dipping naan. The Samosa chaat was also very hearty and filling. The momos had a nice juicy filling and thin dumpling wrapper, which in my books, is the perfect dumpling! Overall, a very pleasant experience, great value for money and excellent service by the staff. Would come back again. …Read More

Pricey brunch for quality of food
Kinship
2021-04-12
I went here with two friends for brunch for the first time in a Sunday. I have a feeling that brunch in hk is usually quite expensive and kinship offered a set menu ($398 per person not including drinks) that was reasonable at first glance. We had the four starters to share and those were great. I particularly liked the bbq pork hash and beetroot salad. I ordered the Korea fried chicken for my main and it just wasn’t very good. The batter was soggy even as I took my first bite and came off the chicken really easily. The coleslaw flavour wasn’t that great either. The dessert was the biggest disappointment however. I ordered the mango cheesecake and I have to say it ranks pretty low on the cheesecakes I’ve had. The texture of the cake itself felt like there was gelatin added to it so it wasn’t creamy at all. Didn’t taste any cream cheese flavour either. Though the food and price were disappointing, the decor of this place is quite nice and I enjoyed the casual vibes. The service was great as well. …Read More

Mediocre afternoon tea
Hue Dining
2021-02-22
Came here for the afternoon tea. It was not too pricey — around $700 for two persons. I wasn’t expecting much but this afternoon tea was below average. The savoury bites were by far better than the sweets. The devilled quail egg was very bland, and nothing really stood out (savoury bites included shrimp cocktail, manchego cheese croquette, cheese puff among other things). The sweet bites were disappointing — many of the items were dry and not pleasing to eat. The only thing worth mentioning was the scones which were light and fluffy. It’s too bad that the food isn’t up to par because the view/atmosphere of the restaurant is very nice. …Read More
