Huge and filling slice of pizza!
Paisano's Pizzeria
2011-08-20
Came here after a friend's birthday junk for dinner. Got here at around 8 so it was very very packed! Luckily just as we arrived a group of people left so we barely had to wait :) I already knew that this place was well known for its huge pizza slices but I still couldn't help but be shocked when I actually saw how big the 12" slices were! Was stuck between getting their pasta or pizza but finally went with the pizza in the end since it seemed a waste not to try it here.Had to wait in line for a very long time since there is only one person at the cashier who takes orders and also takes all the phone calls. But I found that everyone working there was very friendly I ordered the $25 12" cheese pizza slice and added $5 for mushroom topping. For me, the thickness of the pizza was just perfect, neither too thin or thick. The amount of melted cheese was just right and they were very generous with the mushroom topping. When ever I eat pizza, I always feel very thirsty afterwards. Even though Paisano's pizza also left me slightly thirsty afterwards, it wasn't half as bad as some other places.Eating here was definitely a good end to a tiring day even if we were sweating while eating outside in the Hong Kong heat; this is what eating in Hong Kong is all about! …Read More

Bad quality eel...
Azabusabo Tokyo
2011-08-19
While hanging out with a friend in Causeway Bay, we decided to have Japanese cuisine for dinner. She recommended this place.I ordered a grilled eel rice with egg.It was a set that came with a bowl of soup and two small side dishes - one was a mixture of black fungus and pumpkin, the other one was vermicelli with shredded cabbage and carrots.Taking the lid off and seeing the grilled eel rice, I thought it looked very appetising. They were very generous with the serving of eel, the egg looked silky and the proportion of rice was just right (I hate it when restaurants serve huge portions of rice with tiny portions of eel!)But the taste was a complete let down! I could barely taste the eel at all! Don't know if it's the way it was cooked or the quality of the fish but either way it was not good. Not only that but the texture was very weird, makes me think that the eel was very very unfresh. Overall, even with the sauce, egg and everything combined, the taste was extremely bland. My friend ordered a beef curry rice wrapped in egg. From the looks of it, the egg also looked very nice and silky; didn't try it though. I tried a very tiny bit of the rice with the curry sauce but even this tiny bite tasted extremely salty! I suspect that they use the packets of curry powder available commercially? Not sure.I was already full from my meal so wasn't interested in trying their dessert. My friend ordered a matcha milkshake though. When the real thing arrived at the table, it looked a lot sloppier compared to the one in the menu. Didn't try it myself but my friend said 90+% of the milkshake was just ice-cream, she could barely taste the matcha at all...Don't think I'll be revisiting this place any time soon...…Read More

PAUL LAFAYET (K11購物藝術館)
2011-08-19
Since we were in K11 for dinner, it seemed a waste not to give Paul Lafayet a try!Me and my friend stood there staring at all the different cakes we could get... such a hard decision! Finally, we decided on the Mango Soleil and the waitress also recommended the new Champagne macaron. I was also really interested by the Rose macaron so we ordered that too.Sitting at the small table inside the shop, the first out of the three that we tried was the Mango Soleil. Inside this little dome cake is alternating layers of pistachio sponge cake and vanilla cream with small chunks of mango flesh in the centre. Personally, I'm not a fan of cream so I didn't really enjoy this that much. However, the pistachio sponge cake was very rich in flavour - could definitely taste the pistachio!Next up was the Rose macaron. To be honest, I couldn't taste the rose flavour at all... only overwhelmed by the sugary-sweetness!Last, the Champagne macaron. I thought this was the best out of the three! After having the rose macaron, I was expecting another one that was just filled with sweetness. But I was wrong! Taking a bite from this one, I could really taste the flavour of champagne! It was somewhat bitter yet still quite fruity, yum …Read More

A satisfying dinner
Kitchen M
2011-08-19
Finally got to try out Kitchen M today with a close friend! Since I saw from previous reviews that the restaurant itself is quite small, I wasn't too surprised when I saw the actual size of it. I thought the atmosphere was quite cosy actually :)Got there at about 6:15 and was politely greeted by a waitress who asked us if we had reserved a table. When we told her we hadn't, she said that the only table available was the one right next to the entrance. We were okay with that but I hadn't expected it to be so fully booked even on a Thursday night We ordered one dinner set to share between us (since we're not very big eaters and we wanted to leave some stomach space for Paul Lafayet's! ) The first thing that arrived was the complimentary bread basketThe bread was freshly served; firm on the outside, yet warm and tender in the centre! For starters, we ordered the Beef Carpaccio Although the dish itself looked interesting, the actual taste let it down. Taking a bite of the beef, all I could taste was the salad dressing drizzled over it. No beef taste at all! :(Next up was the Onion SoupAlthough the beef appetiser was disappointing, this soup definitely worked up my appetite again! The taste was strong and perfect along with the bits of bread and onion inside which soaked up all the wonderful flavours of the soup!Next the main course Pan-seared Salmon with Pumpkin Risotto. The waiter actually brought the wrong main dish to our table at first, but seeing our confused look they realised they had taken down the wrong order and immediately went to make the right one. No big deal though, atleast they politely apologised for it!For me, this was the highlight of the whole meal! When arriving at Kitchen M, I had a craving for baked salmon for a change rather than sashimi. This dish definitely satisfied that craving! When ordering baked salmon in most restaurants, the flesh is flaky, dry and breaks off into little pieces when you try to cut it. But this one was cooked just right so that the inside was still tender, moist and juicy; not dry at all! Also, the layer of skin was cooked nice and crispy :)The pumpkin risotto was also different from many others I've had. Instead of being thick and creamy, this one was rather soupy - but still really good! In my opinion, the soupy-ness makes it even better since you don't get the weighed down feeling from all the cream added in. What I also really loved was the combination of various textures in the whole dish; the crunchiness from the beans, the smoothness of the risotto, the mushiness from the pumpkin and the chewiness of the mushrooms! All brought together by the soupy-base... So good! Last of all was dessert; NapoleonHave to say that taste-wise this wasn't up to my expectations :( I'd still give it a thumbs up for its presentation though!Overall, Kitchen M has left me with quite a good impression and I definitely wouldn't mind coming back again! :)…Read More

Above & Beyond my expectations!
Above & Beyond
2011-08-06
Recently saw some reviews of 天外天 on openrice and was instantly captivated by the pictures and feedback of their food! Immediately decided to make a reservation for my family; I was also picky and specifically requested for a window seat The place is actually quite small yet it is naturally brightly-lit by the large windows panning across the room. Unfortunately, our view from the window wasn't that nice as we were overlooking a lot of industrial buildings. The service was also very professional, however, a slight disappointment is that they forgot to bring up the starter snacks when we sat down. It was only until we reminded them that they brought it out! Hope that won't happen again in the future. Here is what we ordered: 鮑汁豬仔腳 ($78) 如意龍蝦餃 ($48 each) 帶子燒賣 ($45) 帶子松露和牛包 ($45) 欖菜斑片腸粉 ($78) 鮮蝦脆春卷 ($45) 五香鵝肝鹹水角 ($39) 香煎蘿蔔糕 ($39) XO醬煎腸粉 ($78) 水煮魚片粉皮 ($168)Nothing too special about the starters but I liked how they provided a variety of sauces! From left to right: soy sauce, chili sauce which could have been spicier in my opinion and the XO sauce. The first thing that arrived was the 鮑汁豬仔腳. Not only did it look pleasant as it was neatly presented, it was also warm and tender! The tenderness of the soft meat was also complimented by the crunchiness from the bones. One of my favourites out of all our orders! Usually a person who isn't too fond of 燒賣, I felt that the 帶子燒賣 was worth a try after seeing the drool-worthy photos in previous reviews. Taking the first bite already had me amazed! The shrimp inside was sweet, juicy, moist and in addition with the scallop on top, the combination was just perfect! Definitely a must-order when visiting this place.Another recommendation when coming to this place is the 如意龍蝦餃 which is ordered individually. What surprised me when I picked this up with my chopsticks was how generous the portion size is! The skin of the dumpling was the perfect; neither too thick or too thin. Moreover, in many other dim sum restaurants, the rice paper skin of the dumplings is soggy and not elastic enough when you pull it apart with your teeth; no problem with the ones here though! :) Another thing I liked about this was the black truffle sprinkled on the top of the dumpling which added an additional rich mushroom-y flavour! I thought that this 帶子松露和牛包 was only okay, not sure if it was because my expectations were set higher by the previous dishes. Though I have to say the wagyu beef was nicely flavoured but I wasn't aware of any scallop inside; nothing too special about this dish. This Sichuan-style 水煮魚片粉皮 is even better than the traditional ones because it is a lot less oily. Normally I wouldn't dare drink the soup because of the thick layer of oil on the top but it was okay here.I loved the texture of the garoupa fish, it's thick skin gave it a nice springy and chewiness. The addition of the chunky spring onions and bean sprouts is also a plus as they absorb all the spiciness from the soup (I love spicy food!). The 粉皮 was also really good in texture but there was barely any. Only recommend this dish to those who can eat very spicy though! One of my other favourites was the XO醬煎腸粉. Though its appearance was just like any other, it's taste was amazing! The XO sauce was strong and flavourful and I liked the addition of the pork floss. Even better when dipped into chilli sauce! Of all the orders, I would have to say that the 鮮蝦脆春卷 and 五香鵝肝鹹水角 were most disappointing. Not something I would order again the next time I come. All in all, the service was great, the food excellent and the environment peaceful, quiet and comfortable. Will definitely revisit 天外天 again to try the rest of their dim sum! …Read More
