Tasty and cheap breakfast but the service is so-so
Overseas Dragon
2009-04-23
This morning I wanted something hot and fresh for breakfast, so I suggested to take our baby JC for a walk and have breakfast at the Overseas Dragon. They have recently introduced their breakfast menu and I have been wanting to try it! It is a Thursday morning, 3-4 tables are full, and the workers are wrapping dumplings inside. The environment is quite clean, the food is freshly made twice a day. One thing to complain is that their staff are, not unfriendly, but rather, distant. We settled down and picked two breakfast sets:1) Classic dumplings (8) and Corn Soup2) Crispy bun with peanut butter and sweet n' condensed milk; hot soy milkCorn Soup - I never tried their corn soup before but my friends who came said that it tasted exactly like what they had in Taiwan. So I thought I might as well have a try. Hot and tasty. The black pepper on top added a little kick in it. I would prefer a thicker and creamier soup, but it's really not bad at all! Classic dumplings - We have tried the spicy Korean dumplings and Jade dumplings before, we liked those, but for breakfast, I was hoping for something less spicy. So I picked the classic ones. It arrived a couple minutes after I finished my soup. Not a long wait, but I would prefer having it a little sooner. The taste is great. Very meaty and juicy. The temperature is great - steamy hot! I like to eat the dumplings with their garlic paste and vinegar, it's really fresh and goes with the meat and the smooth wrappings.JC Daddy said that the bun is really crispy (it's halved and toasted), but it would be better if they put more sauce on the top. The soy milk is great - JC Daddy is quite picky about soy milk, but he highly recommended the soy milk here. Great place to have a cheap, quick breakfast. We'll definitely come again. …Read More

Quality food brings childhood memories
Sweetheart Garden Restaurant
2009-04-20
When asked what he wanted to eat tonight for our double date with another couple, my hubby said he was hungry for good steak. Walking along the busy streets of Mong Kok we saw the bright signs of 'Steak Expert' and 'Sweetheart Garden Restaurant'. We asked our friends to choose between the two, our friends immediately picked 'Sweetheart' over 'Expert'! I personally preferred 'sweetheart' because I love its English name... what a cheesy name for a restaurant! Anyhow. It was 7pm in the evening, the restaurant was about 30% full, we picked a nice quiet corner. We sat down, and the servers were very efficient and polite. He gave us some water and was very patient when we asked questions regarding the menu and the size of the meat being served. My hubby ordered an American Sirloin Steak (~$120), medium rare, serve on skillet. I ordered New York Sirlloin Steak (~$80), medium well, serve on skillet. Our friends ordered a pigeon set on a plate (~$70) and a little wok fille (~$80), medium rare on a plate. We also ordered extra rice. And we all ordered 'red' soup. The soup was hot and tasty. Nobody said anything but was concentrated on consuming the soup. The bread on the side was fresh. Nothing too surprising but the taste was the same as the times when my daddy took me and my sister here 12 years ago! Later we discovered that our friends had similar childhood experience coming to the Garden Restaurant having steak with their families on special occasions. Our friends said coming here is not only for their steaks, but for the memories that brought back to them. The steaks arrived soon after we finished the soups. Wow! The sizzling sound from the sauce poured over the skillet always fascinates me! Who cares about the oily smell that stays on our clothes afterward! The American Steak was thick and juicy. It is obvious that the higher the price, the better quality the steak is. However, the skillet cooked the steak too well and it wasn't as pink as my hubby would like! What a disappointment! The New York Steak I ordered was just right. It is not as thick as the American Steak, but the portion is enough for me! The meat is extremely tender and the quality is really not bad! I love the black pepper sauce, it is the perfect match for my steak! The only thing to complain about is the amount of veggies they serve.. There was only two cherry tomatoes and a little piece of Shanghai pak choi! Also the rice that was served on the side was kind of cold...Our friends commented that the Little Wok Fillet was okay, the serving size was big but the meat quality is so-so. And the Pigeon dish was disappointing - the skin wasn't crispy at all and the portion is rather small. One nice thing is that it served with 2 slices of watermelon and salad. Overall, the food quality is good, at least for the steak dishes; and I will definitely come again!…Read More

Shanghai Restaurant
2009-03-29
Walking around late at night in Tai Kok Tsui, and we happened to choose this place because the signboard outside offered two servings of rice plus a drink with entrees for $24/26/32. We ordered choi-sum-lion's head ($26) and cashew chicken ($32), plus 5 siu-lung-bau ($14, I think). When we received the two dishes some time later, we were surprised at two things: the TINY portion sizes and a little flying bug (dead, at least) in the cashew chicken. The waiter (owner?) calmly took out his glasses to inspect it, and then brought the dish back to the kitchen to remove the offending insect. The result was cashew chicken minus one bug but also minus one of the very few pieces of chicken actually in the take-out box.I inquired whether this was the usual portion size; the answer was 'yes.'The food tasted just fine, but I can't recommend this place - even though I overheard, while sitting there, that the shop has been open for 30-plus years, which is usually a selling point for me.…Read More

食物有水準的狗CAFE
Lets Dog Cafe
2009-03-27

It’s a rainy day and there was nothing in the fridge. I decided to go for a quick walk with my baby. Once I got off the lift, my stomach is calling me. I decided to go to the Chan Kee Tofu dessert Snack Shop! I ordered a steamed rice roll (腸粉) to start. It was steamy and the sweet sauce and peanut sauce matched perfectly. After the snack, my baby was still sitting contently in his stroller. He started cooing with the school girls across the table, so I decided to order my favourite – black Tofu (soy bean curd) dessert. It was freshly made just a minute ago and IT WAS FABULOUS! I added a tiny bit of brown sugar on top and it was just right. My little baby started being impatient, and so I let him have his first bite of Tofu his life and he immediately stopped crying. It’s worth the price to pay $15 for a cheap lunch and a wonderful memory in a neighbourhood snack shop. …Read More
