New favourite Korean
DANJI
2022-10-14
Make sure you book in advance! We got here on a Friday just as they opened at 5pm. They were fully booked but kindly offered us the outdoor table seats until 7pm. We said we'd be done by 6pm and they said we could sit inside. We wanted to have the Danji Soju cocktails in Yuzu & Plum flavours but Plum was not available, so we thought to try just one Yuzu first. They were so kind to split it into two glasses without our asking, and the Yuzu cocktail was so good we ordered another full glass each!Every dish we had was great. The Crispy Kimchi Pancake was not too oily and the sauce was the perfect pairing. The Galbi Jjim was fall off the bone soft and the highlight of the meal. Be sure to order a white rice to soak up all the sauce. We also tried the Hangover Ramen which I have been craving after watching a lot of Korean YouTubers eating ramen. This would be a perfect dish for late night meals and if you're drunk :)Service was warm & friendly. We'll be back soon to try their bimbimbap, fried chicken and dried snacks!…Read More

Best high tea!
The Market
2021-05-30
I'm always impressed by the quality of food at Hotel Icon's restaurants. The Durian Afternoon Tea is such a unique idea and while generally I am not a fan of high teas, this one was so good! Every variation of durian in this high tea was so well thought out. This place was packed so make sure to reserve ahead of time!…Read More

Skip the Surf & Turf
FRITES Belgium on Tap (濠豐大廈)
2021-05-30
Came for the Surf & Turf (Canadian Thermidor Lobster with Black Angus steak) and both of these completely disappointed. The Lobster smelled fishy and I had maybe two bites before discarding the rest, while the the surface of my (ordered medium-rare) Black Angus steak was burned. Nice place for drinks and great open ceilings atmosphere but won't ever be back for the food.…Read More

My new favorite Singapore chicken rice place
Chatterbox Express
2021-05-30
My new favorite Singapore chicken rice place. I've been to Chatterbox at K11 and didn't like the whole experience & taste, but here the vibe is casual & relaxed and the chicken rice is great. It's awesome the variety of the menu & sides and the drinks too. Will be back next week!…Read More

I have been here 3 times since they opened
DPD Deluxe
2021-03-27
I was so excited to know a deluxe version of DPD had opened in Fortress Hill. I have been here three times since they opened. I know some people find it a bit strange that they have both a chinese and a western selection but I absolutely love it. I love being able to mix a chinese beef noodles with a western pork jowl sandwich. They don't have the full dinner menu online, I hope they can get that up soon. The pictures online don't do this plave justice, this is a must visit! Staff are so friendly and attentive, excellent service! If you come during dinner, they give you a chinese soup as a starter, which I really enjoyed since I don't have much opportunities to have chinese soups.Signature beef noodles - must order, so good! Only on the menu before 6pmKailan & beef slices - another must order. Only on the dinner menuSweet & sour pork - also only on dinner menu. So tasty, but be warned, the portion size is HUGE! Pork jowl sandwich - so good!Signature club sandwich - sorry, but I did not enjoy this... I much prefer the pork jowl sandwich.…Read More

Best Nasi Lemak in town
Bibi & Baba
2021-03-27
This is the best Nasi Lemak in town, and not sure I can name names but I have tried many... the otah is a bit pricey but worth adding on. Most importantly, the chilli is great, and that's what makes or breaks the Nasi Lemak. Unfortunately I haven't had most of their other dishes, because every time I come here I am singularly focused on getting my Nasi Lemak fix!…Read More

My go-to for casual Japanese
Kappo Ro Ann (iSQUARE)
2021-03-27
This is my go-to for casual quality Japanese in HK. I have been here so many times for their Lunch Menu and almost never been disappointed. If it's your first time, go for the Grilled Kumamoto Wagyu Sirloin Steak Rice Bowl - the beef with sauce is so great, highly recommend! If you want a classic, Fresh Kumamoto Amakusa Fish Sashimi Rice Bowl is an awesome chirashi bowl selection - very fresh! My only disappointing visit was the one time I ordered the Wagyu Sukiyaki Set - even though this was just as good, the portion of beef was way too small, so maybe skip ordering this if you're hungry.…Read More

Frequent Visitor of Uncle Quek
J.A.M. Joint Asian Market
2021-03-27
I've been here 3 times since they opened because the menu at Uncle Quek has been constantly changing and I've been keen to try all their Singaporean dishes. Bak Chor Mee - very authentic & spicy, so I've been told. Unfortunately I am more of the Lavender mee pok type of guy which is a little bit of a different style. Still, this was probably the best dish I've had at Uncle Quek, and definitely best version of this dish in HK. Also comes with a side of Otak which was great! Hokkien Mee - 2nd best favorite. Bak Kut Teh - while the quality of the meat was good, it was relatively tasteless. Having it with sticky dumpling rice instead of white rice was strange too and flavors were too contrasting.…Read More

Not a Philly Cheesesteak
Prohibition Grill house & Cocktail bar
2021-01-23
I first came to Prohibition over a year ago when they first opened, when I had probably the best club sandwich in town. Sadly, this dish is no longer on the menu, and my most recent visit was much more disappointing. On this latest visit, I ordered the Philly Cheesesteak. As we all know, a Philly Cheesesteak is supposed to contain thin slices of actual beef. When mine was served, it was a total shocker - it was minced beef with cheese. I had one bite and had to return it - it tasted as bad as it looked. I told the staff that this is not a Philly Cheesesteak and asked if this is how they normally serve it. They said yes. To their credit, the staff are courteous and they apologized and took my dish back, and asked if I wanted something else. I ordered the wagyu cheeseburger but it was also unenjoyable (particularly the patty texture/taste). I eat a lot of burgers so I'd like to think I know what a good burger is.  But I was so hungry by this point I ate most of it anyway and afterwards really regretted just going somewhere else to eat.  After this poor experience I won't ever come back. By the way, on Prohibition's instagram, it says "this Philly Cheesesteak is a sliced sandwich stuffed with finely slices pieces of beefsteak and deliriously thick melted cheese in a long hoagie roll", but obviously it wasn't what they served.…Read More

Authentic Bak Chor Mee
J.A.M. Joint Asian Market
2021-01-17
I'm always on the lookout for real Singaporean food so came here as soon as they opened. This is the first time I've found Bak Chor Mee in HK, and it was definitely authentic. Take note that this is the spicy chilli kind, not the vinegar or tomato ketchup kind. The set came with otah-otah which was as generously portioned and as tasty as the noodles. Kueh dadar was okay. Wish they had more a la carte add-on options for bigger eaters, but I can understand that maybe logistically that would be a nightmare considering there are four stalls/cuisines sharing the same kitchen. Note: we ordered from Uncle Quek inside J.A.M.…Read More

Golden Monkey
2019-02-23
The honey-glazed pork chop was dry. Usually when this dish is served in other restaurants they'll use a fatter cut so the meat is juicy. Unfortunately this restaurant doesn't serve the fish sauce that other Vietnamese restaurants have either, so the dish was somewhat disappointing. The medium-rare beef was a bit chewy in pho, though portion size was good. Wish they had served more soup and less noodle though, as it was hard to get the beef cooked.Okay so this was the weirdest part of the meal. I ordered a fresh young coconut, and when it came the liquid inside was cloudy. Upon further inspection, the inside flesh was missing! It's not that the coconut had no flesh, because the top of the coconut cut-out still had flesh. It's as if they had removed the flesh in the back kitchen for some other purpose. It freaked me out a little and I asked if they were re-using the coconuts and just refilling the coconut juice. The waiter assured me they didn't and quickly replaced my coconut. He seemed shocked enough too that I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, but I am still a little disturbed.Decent place for lunch/dinner if you live/work in the area, but better places to try if you're just visiting.…Read More

Best Pho in HK
Chualam's Pho
2018-09-08
The Raw Beef Pho was awesome - probably the best pho I’ve had in HK and way cheaper than the competition at $68. The broth is flavorful and clean tasting. It’s a shame they don’t let you add extra beef though they do give you free noodle refills. Nice to know that the noodles are made in-house.I had the Chef’s Special - Raw Beef Pho for $88. Not sure why it’s $20 more than the $68 Beef Pho. We asked the waitress and she said you get more beef with the Chef’s Special but didn’t look that way when it came. So I’d say just stick to the $68 version when you order. The beef tendon is not as good, stick with the raw beef. I hear there are long snaking queues for this place on weekdays, but we came here on Sunday at 11am and it was still have empty.Would definitely come back. A good place to eat after a workout. …Read More

Don’t get distracted
Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice (Fashion Walk)
2018-07-29
It’s a big menu, but if you’re here for the chicken rice, don’t get distracted. Order the half-chicken ($268, feeds 2-3) and a large chicken-oil rice ($68, feeds 2), and you’re good to go. Yes it’s very pricey compared to Singapore, but someone’s got to pay the rent. Most importantly, it takes just like in Singapore. …Read More

Decent take on Chinese by Pirata Group
Madame Ching
2018-05-27
Had a chance to try this place in the first week. Some decent dishes but also some disappointments. The goodRoasted Chicken: soft and tender with a crispy skin. Reminds me of hainanese chicken rice. Great sauce.Pork Wonton: tasty dumplings, shame we had to share.Egg Fried Rice: delicious and every mouthful made me want to eat more. The averageChar Siu: skip this, looks like if a non-local chef attempted to make char siu.Fish: fishy and not in a good wayEggplant: decent, but nothing specialDan Dan noodles: mixed reviews on the table for this super spicy dish. I didn't really care for it.Ginger Jelly Pudding: disappointing dessert to end the evening. The uglyMapo Tofu: avoid this, tasted acidic and probably the worst take on mapo tofu I have ever had…Read More

Shake‘em Salty Buns
SHAKE SHACK (國際金融中心商場)
2018-05-07
I’ve had Shake Shack in London, Tokyo and now Hong Kong, and this was by far the worst. The burger patty was extremely salted down, almost as if they were curing the meat. Ditto on the fries, too much salt.My guess is that the huge lineups are causing them to struggle in the quality control department. I would wait until the crowds die down and maybe then the burgers will get better. Big disappointment. …Read More
