Safe choices~
Cafe Deco Pizzeria
2018-05-08
A - The restaurant itselfThis place is our favourite restaurant in Elements as their seats are comfortable and has a variety of foods to choose from. We usually would order one of their appetizers, pizzas and some other main dish. This time, we ordered:B - Food1)            Pan Roasted Scallops (HKD$112)Came with 4 scallops and few pieces of ham, covered in rockets and some diced tomatoes. Not a dish for rocket haters, the scallops were cooked with nice timing, its size was alright and not salty as some restaurants would make them.2)            Roasted Spring Chicken(HKD$188)The spring chicken came in 4 pieces, it’s not an ‘entire’ chicken if that’s what you were wondering, they didn’t come with the neck, head, wings and the bum.  It only has the chicken breast to drumstick portion which has the mostmeat, and they sit on mash potatoes which has a very evident taste of butter. The chicken was tender, flavor was just about right, a much wiser choice over their BBQ ribs.3)            Hawaiian Pizza  (HKD$148)It also appears to be a wise choice as the pizza itself enhances your appetite. Thanks to this, the two of us managed to make all food disappear from the table.C - DrinksWe ordered the Somersby Apple Cider (Draught) (HKD$76) again, it’s a sweet and easy-to-drink alcoholic beverage, the glasses were pre-frozen and the drink itself was already freezing. The drink remained cold throughout the meal, which is always essential. After discount due to credit card for food and happy hour for drinks, the meal costed HKD$391 only.…Read More

Space by the sea
Ka Ma Do Japanese Restaurant
2018-04-30
A - The restaurant:It is located on the 8/F of One Peking, TST, it is not high enough to enjoy a grand unobstructed seaview, but you still enjoy partial seaview. When I called to make a booking, they offered me a choice for spending either minimum charge of HKD$880+ to get a seaview room for 2 or you can order and pay any amount you want, and seewhere would the waitress and fate bring you. From what I saw, more than half of the seats would be able to sea at least a bit of the Victoria Harbour. Some of the seats other than the HKD$880+ seaview rooms do also enjoy seaview, just there would be much less privacy. If you intend to drink Sake, you might as well book the seaview room anyway. B - For food: 1 – 北寄貝串 (HKD$38)The seasoning is a bit spicy, the food itself was chewy and still hot when served. (HKD$20)Not bad at all. (unless you are the kind who would picture yourself and a cow French kissing…)3 – 雞肉串 (HKD$20)Slightly overcooked, but not bad also.4 – 和牛串燒 (HKD$70)Not bad, but not as good as you would like it to be.5 – 日本特製玉子 (HKD$45)Bit dry, serving size is possibly the smallest compared to other restaurants we went before. (HKD$58)The look like suckling pig from a distance, taste spicy, rough and dry. We tried it on an experimental basis and ….yes we failed this one.7 – 炸黃金魷魚圈 (小辣) (HKD$59)Not bad for a snack with the Sake. A bit oily but acceptable as a chewy treat.8 – 凍天婦羅蝦蕎麥麵 (HKD$87)The tempura shrimp was crunchy and not wrapped in heavy cover. The noodle was served with a foundation of ice, which kept the noodle cold enough). I would like to mention that an attentively waitress earned a good service  point from us as she noticed the ice underneath melted and helped pour out the excess water. We didn’t even notice it ourselves.9 – 鰻魚櫻蝦牛油果卷 (HKD$110)Awesome for someone who would like to think it is a healthy dish with avocado, served with 8 pcs, good for sharing too. C - For drinks: 1 – 銀盤純米大吟釀 – 720ml (HKD$380)As there are only 2 of us, it would be near impossible for you to stuff so much in your stomach and get to the minimum charge amount of HKD$880+, so it was only ‘natural’ for us to order Sake (which was my intention in the very beginning anyway).  I ordered this one as it appeared to me it has the highest rating considering its quantity, grading, and taste compared to others on the menu. Even my gf found it tastes sweet and easy to drink. But of course, you can always order the most expensive one available. D - ConclusionWe managed to hit the minimum charge target quite close, the view was good, the price was alright, especially if you want to have a special night. Food was generally served pretty quick and quality was slightly above average. The night was enjoyable for the both of us and that’s what really mattered. BUT, a down side is they do not have a call button in the room  (at least I didn’t see one, correct me if I was wrong), so that you have to either wait for the waitress to walk by or poke yourself out and wave at them. Luckily, the restaurant was quite full and they had to walk by quite often.…Read More

Price and quality go hand in hand
Peak Cafe Bar

A - The restaurant:The colors used are dark tone with mirrors as highlights which give the restaurant an upper-class-to-be look. The table surface is a granite slab with a very bulky central leg supporting it, not too good for ladies with dress as it gets in the way and the only way to sit comfortably is open your legs wide (easy for men, not so for women in skirts). They have a ‘late night’ discount which cuts the price for drinks and food on the menu in half.B - For food: 1 – Crab Cake (HKD$108 – original price)The size was above average, but the taste was only average. Still couldn’t beat the one we ate in Café Deco (TST), but for half the original price, no one should really complain.2 – Seafood Bouillabaisse (HKD$228 – original price)It is simply a pot of seafood with soup, the seafood was not rotten, but the soup is too thin and not well seasoned. But again, for half the original price, you can’t expect much.3 – Angus Sirloin (10oz) (HKD$268 – original price)The meat was branded with thick grill marks which gives it a strong burnt taste in the mouth, my gf had to cut them away to taste the meat. However, the meat was fine ‘beneath’ the scorched surface. But again for half the….. you get the idea.C - For drinks: 1 – (Pint) Hoegaarden (HKD$84 – original price)Normal taste draft beer. Actually for $42, it’s actually a bargain for most places.2 – Sangria (S) (HKD$82 – original price)You get to choose whether to have red or white wine, personally I always preferred the white. It is also another $42 bargain.D - For dessert: Death by Chocolate (HKD$78 – original price)The chocolate ice cream was alright, not the ones you get from Dairy farm at least. Quite chocolaty but no one would die for it.E - ConclusionFor half the price, I would consider it a slightly above average meal. A fair choice if you live nearby. Lots of the tables were booked and filled, which proved it to have some degree of popularity.…Read More

Hoi Yat Heen
2018-04-12

Jamie not entirely yummy
Jamie's Italian
2018-04-12
The restaurant:We had made a booking in advance and we were arranged a family seat (卡位), most of the waitresses speak english only, for non-english speakers, there are still a couple of Cantonese speaking waiters available.  Since we arrived early, around 6:15pm, there were many tables occupied, except for some who’s enjoying their happy hour (HKD$10 per drinks 6-7pm) the price increases a bit after7pm, but is still considered an attractive price level. There is also a semi outdoor area with cover which has views of the external street for people who enjoy fresh air and the great outdoors. For food: 1 – Truffle Tagliatelle (HKD$198)It is not outstanding, the quantity is just right for sharing between 2 persons. The price for this dish alone would be considered over priced. 2 – The Pesce (HKD$188)The pesce was not hot at all, it felt like it had been baked and cooled for some time. The crust is hard and dry, the texture is no better than the pizza bread you would get from a bakery. The taste was alright, but would not recommend ordering it if you prefer freshly baked  which feels hot in your hands and mouth. For drinks: 1 – Pear and Rosemary Martini (HKD$75)The taste was alright, just like a normal martini should. But you cannot simultaneously enjoy the  benefits of Super Monday for food and happy hours for drinks. Since we are not alcoholics, we opted for Super Monday’s discount for food.ConclusionThe pesce was disappointing, but seating and service quality were fine for us. If we were to go again, we pray other foods would turn out fine. Thanks to Super Monday’s 2 on 1 for mains, the meal only costs HKD$300.3 for the two of us. Without Super Monday, the food is overpriced. Nonetheless, if you are an alcoholic and wants to take advantage of their happy hour drinks you can still try this restaurant.…Read More

Quality spanish food
Playa de Papagayo
2018-03-15
The restaurant:Tsim Sha Tsui has two Playa de Papagayo and we went to the one in Observatory Road. They have outdoor seats for smokers and pet lovers, and indoor seats for ones who prefer a non-smoking environment with air conditioning and away from the traffic noise outside. We were arranged an indoor low table. The restaurant serves several blends of Sangria. We ordered the Royal Sangria and Beer Sangria. Sangria is always the best friend of Spanish food. The Sangrias we chose were fruity and refreshing as expected, it comes with astick of cinnamon as a stirrer instead of a straw or spoon. Most importantly, the happy hour here lasts till 9 pm! For food: We ordered two tapas, “Suckling pig”, “Baked egg cake” and a “Four cheese pizza”.1 - Suckling pig (small size) (HKD$88)It is crispy and served with potato mash. They served two portions, large and small. It is recommended to order the large portion if you have more than 4 persons.2 - Baked egg cake (HKD$78)The egg comes with potato filling. The combination of potato and egg is a perfect match. The texture of the potato is soft and smooth, which proves their timing was right. The egg… well, does taste like an egg. 3 - Four Cheese pizza (HKD$128)Literally, it comes with 4 types of cheese: cheddar, parmesan, mozzarella and goat cheese. Instead of having 4 different sections of cheese, the cheese are mixed and melted into one single family. It should be a green light for cheese lovers.4 - Beer sangria and Royal sangria (HKD$58 each)Just try it.ConclusionGenerally, the restaurant has high headroom and is relaxing for a casual dinner, their table arrangements are well suited for both small and large group of friends. More on food, though we did not order the paella, the presentation and smell of the paella ordered by customers at the nearby table was so attractive. We look forward to try it out the next time we come back! The meal costs the 2 of us HKD$451 (incl. service charge), food portions are acceptable, food qualityis above average, price is reasonable and again, happy hour lasts till 9 pm!…Read More

Inconsistent grill quality
The Yuu Japanese Dining
2018-03-14
The restaurantLocated inside a building of Knutsford Terrace and requires taking a lift up several floors. The Japanese timber style fitting-out restaurant’s overall lighting level is quite dark and makes it hard to read the food menu. For food: we ordered “avocado crabmeat sushi roll”, “original EDO style omelette”, “seafood soup in tea pot”, “fried clam with butter sauce” and various grills.1 – Avocado crabmeat sushi rollThe avocado crabmeat sushi roll is good. We think this was a good choice to go with a light and simple taste dish along with the grilled sticks of salty meat. It was one of the very few choice of sushi as this place puts more focus on grill rather than sushi.2 – Original EDO style omeletteThere were several types of omelette fillings to choose from, but we go for the plain original EDO style (just egg without filling). The omelette was tasty and met our expectations, it was served as one piece and the staff will help you divide it into portions. It seems to be one of the most popular dishes in the restaurant as we saw many other tables ordered the omelette too.3 – Seafood soup in tea potWhen we saw this on the menu, we had high expectation as not many Japanese restaurants served this traditional Japanese seafood broth. However, it turned out to be quite disappointing as the soup is too salty after our first sip and we do not want to finish it. 4 – Fried clam with butter sauceThe size of clams were above average ones you would get in most restaurants but sadly the clams were probably not fresh and stank of fishy smell.5 - GrillsWe ordered two rounds of grill. The first round with chicken, ox tounge and deluxe beef was great, most likely because it was early when we ordered it and there weren’t many customers around. However, for our second round grill (chicken wing, asparagus, chicken w/ codroe and fresh eel). The chicken wing and eel were completely charred on one side. We suspect it was due to more customers came and flooded the kitchen with orders.1st round (good):2nd round (burnt):6 – ConclusionThe meal costs the two of us HK$695 in total (10% service charge included), the service was acceptable, but the foods’ quality could be more consistent and unfortunately some could not meet our expectations, for nearly HK$700, you could easily get a better deal elsewhere in TST. It is not likely we will give this place another go in the near future.…Read More

Delicious crab cake
Main St. Deli
2018-03-13
The Main Street Deli is an American food restaurant located inside The Langham, TST. Unlike other fine dining hotel restaurants, it is rather causal and warm with attentive waitresses. We were arranged a family seat for 4 and was quite comfortable for the 2 of us with bags and coats. However, there is a gap between the side of the sofa and the wall, double check to see if you have dropped anything before leaving. We ordered food: “Crab Cake”, “Buffalo Wing”, “Wagyu M5 Burger”, “Barbecue Back Ribs” and drinks: “Lemmy Lemon”.The crab cake is so delicious. It is one of our favorite crab cakes. The outside is crispy and with plenty of crab meat inside. We will definitely come back for it again! There is a choice of spicy or normal flavor for the buffalo wings. We opted for the normal and had the sauce separately served but it was still a little bit spicy for us. You can also challenge to eat the spicy version of the wings, good luck with that. The meat was tender, which was also important. There are few choices for burgers. We chose the Wagyu M5 burger which was served with pickles separately served, it’s not exceptional but was alright, but for $238, you should have better choices elsewhere.  The barbecue back ribs are cooked nicely. Not at all dry and the sauce matches well with the ribs, the portion was large and you might be better off ordering it if u have 3-4 persons.Lemmy Lemon is a weird looking bottled drink that would go well after your spicy buffalo wings, alcohol is also available on the menu. And you do not have to worry about your kids as there are also choices of non alcoholic sodas and drinks to choose from.…Read More

Super Monday
Scarlett Cafe & Wine Bar
2018-03-13
This is a two-storey restaurant with a bar-like environment at the ground floor and a more secluded dining area on the second floor. All tables and seats are at a high level so your feet would not be touching the ground, unless you’re a very tall basketball player.  The waiter arranged us a table on the second floor. The setting is nice but unfortunately neither the air-conditioner was switched on nor the windows opened. Maybe it was a Monday night and we arrived a bit early, we came around 6:40pm and there were only two other tables with customers. (I notice them turning the A/C on only nearing 8pm.)The staff were very friendly and helpful. They have a variety of white and red wine selection (and champagne). Under the recommendation of the staff, we picked two glasses of white wine, “Saumur”.  The downside is the happy hour ends at 6pm. We ordered the “Mussel Sancerre”, “Wagyu Rib Eye”, “Lobster Bisque”. After we made our order, they served us a bucket of baguette with butter, and the butter was not the frozen hard type, you can easily spread them on the baguette which I think is a plus on the little things. We were a bit disappointed with the “Lobster Bisque”, unfortunately, its smell was better than its taste. However, it goes well with the cheese breadstick that came with it. The Mussel Sancerre helped save the day, my other half loved it, it was served with fried potato wedges, which was freshly fried, another plus there. We had another surprise when the Wagyu Rib Eye came on the table, it was a big fat slab of meat that was also well seasoned, we ordered medium well as our usual preference. But people who enjoy more juice should order it medium or below. It was also served with potato wedges, luckily we didn’t ordered anymore, as the rib eye had already occupied the last voids of our stomach. All in all, it is highly likely we would go there again to try out other things in the menu.…Read More

A ''farm'' with sea view
TSUKADA NOJO
2018-02-01
The restaurant is located in the new extension of the Ocean Terminal and enjoys a grand view of the Victoria Harbour, looking out to the glittering skyscrapers of Hong Kong Island. Though the name of the restaurant is 塚田農場, but the restaurant environment is nothing like an actual farm, or even tried to pretend to be one. It has full height glazing to maximize the harbour view and an outdoor balcony for people who enjoys the sea breeze, the outdoor area has LPG heaters to keep customers warm in winter, especially at night times. But since it is only a balcony and with a size like one, the ‘’corridor’’ will only allow people to pass through one at a time and makes it a bit difficult for people with toddler cars and luggage.Looking at the menu, there isn’t much to choose from, you get a few selection of hot pot, ramen, rice, etc. For drinks, there is red, white wines, sake and beer, non-alcoholic drinks are available too.The food we ordered:1) 海老牛油果美人卷 ($48)Well, it has shrimp (cooked, not raw), avocado, and crab sticks, diced beet root and veggies, all wrapped in rice paper. The ingredients are generally plain in flavour and you can dip the sauce provided if you want. The choice is yours. The texture is both soft and crunchy together so its quite fun to chew.2) 雞白湯柚子鹽拉麵 ($98)It is said that the chicken meat found in the dishes are the main reason for naming the restaurant with the word ‘farm’, but I find it abit far-fetched, cause most of the food in the world actually come from farms right? Anyway, the ramens were a bit oily but the bamboo shoot (筍) was actually the best ingredient out of the whole ramen, it was soft and crispy without the old and hard fibres which are difficult to chew. But if you were serious about ramen, this is not the place you should go.3) 雞白湯醬油拉麵 ($108)This ramen is served with a chicken leg, at first I was worried that the meat might be difficult to come off then I would have to use my hand, but luckily the chicken meat was cooked soft and easy to peel off with chopsticks and it turned out hands-free~ You also have the onsen egg which was prepped perfectly and still has a watery yolk. But the ramen soup has a thick layer of oil on top, therefore if you want to drink the soup like the Japanese, you should think twice, or more.4) NOJO南蠻炸雞 (原味) ($78)Totally regretted ordering this, the white salad dressing like sauce tasted like the one you get from mcdonald’s fish filet burger, the fried chicken is soggy on the outside, but the chicken meat was actually soft and tender. But I preferred the really hot and crispy texture of the fried chicken, which I did not get from this. I have eaten fried chicken which tasted much better, both Korean and Japanese. I would not recommend this dish unless you do not have teeth and still wants to eat ’fried chicken’.5) 梳乎厘玉子燒- 蟹肉 ($78)It is a ball of eggs and is very filling, if you order this, you either should be confident with your stomach space, or eat with at least 3 others or more. We ordered the egg with crab meat added. The original dish with egg only is cheaper, I think $68? You get what you paid for, a lot of eggs and a couple of crab meat sticks inside, but at least the crab sticks do not appear to be the ones you find frozen in supermarket fridges. Only order this dish if you can’t live without eggs, or your gf demands it, which was always the main reason in my case. 6) 鰻魚忌廉芝士壽司卷 ($68)The eel was perfectly cooked and the meat was firm and thick enough so it does not fall off when your chopstick touches them. But the dish was cold since the cheese and cucumber was cold, too bad it was winter when I eat them. The taste was alright, but I prefer to eat them in summer.7) 1664 Blanc 啤酒 ($82)Just the usual, no particular comment to offer. Cost is reasonable if you consider the view you get outside.8) 抹茶啤酒 ($82)This is a mixture of green tea powder and beer, literally. Just not too well mixed, since there’s a large residue of green tea powder found at the bottom of my glass, which is natural. Not as special as I would like it to be, but if you never tried green tea flavoured beer before, be my guest.ConclusionThe whole meal costs around $706 for the two of us, with the amount of food and the harbour view. I would say it’s reasonable. It’s a good place to enjoy, relax and have a chat. The appetizers should go well with the beverages here. In my case, beer. The service by waiter/ waitress are fast and responsive, I think they are overstaffed even, but who would mind if they get served well : ). If you are a foodie and look for quality foods that are commonly found in viewless places, go somewhere else.…Read More

Favourite restaurant in Elements
Cafe Deco Pizzeria
2018-02-01
This place is our favourite restaurant in Elements as their seats are comfortable and has a variety of foods to choose from. We usually would order one of their appetizers, pizzas and some other main dish. The waiters/ waitress are generally friendly and responsive, the atmosphere is relaxing and not too noisy as the mall is not that crowded. You can choose to sit near the entrance with sofa seats or the other ordinary tables with wooden chairs. We always liked the sofa seats and since we always get off work early in the evening. We always get to choose the sofa seats even with walk in. There are plenty of seats available and generally do not require booking in the week days. Not that the food and services aren’t great, it seems to be more to do with the mall itself. We also see many people order take aways and the restaurant have food delivery services.FoodThis time, we ordered:1) Crab Avocado Crostini ($92)The bread/ baguette slices are served with diced tomato, rocket veggie, cheese and of course, avocado. The flavor is refreshing but you have to eat them before the bread becomes soft – not crunchy.2)Haiwaiian Pizza ($148)The pizza is filled with ham and pineapple, nice cheese and the pizza dough’s texture is just right. Their kitchen has several ovens and fires up the pizza upon your order, so the crust is hot and the fillings, especially the cheese are melted nicely without being overheated/ burnt. The ham and pineapples give the pizza its main Hawaiian flavor.3)Hickory BBQ Baby Pork Ribs ($228)It’s the first time we ordered this and we do not recommend this, the ribs are definitely overcooked, we had to use all of our strength to slice the meat and it was too dry to chew. The two of us ended up eating only 2 pieces out of the lot. Should have ordered their pastas and other main dishes instead. We recommend pasta over this dish.4) DrinksWe ordered the Somersby Apple Cider (Draught) ($76) and Guava Smoothie ($68), the cider, well if you’ve tried the bottle version you know the taste. It’s a sweet and easy-to-drink alcoholic beverage, the glass feels pre-frozen or the drink itself was already freezing. The drink remained cold throughout the meal, which is a plus. The Guava smoothie is refreshing and tasted good, if you want something ‘healthier and non-alcoholic’ this might just be your choice. With discount, the meal only costs right under $400 (incl. service charge) for the both of us. …Read More
