Sun Yun Kee
2010-09-22

Roll
2010-09-22

More than just buying. It was fun + education!
Joey's
2010-03-30
I was one of the first bunch of people to try Joey's Cookies when they first started their business on internet. It is great that they finally have a shop. Finally went to visit their shop on a boring Tuesday night after work. The shop is located on a quiet yet pleasant street. I just parked my car outside. (If you drive, I recommend that you call them first because it is a one-way street and is a bit difficult to get there if you drive. But the guy over the phone gave me excellent instructions and led me there step by step. Excellent service for such a busy shop.) The shop was elegant and I was shocked that they had much more products than before. Besides cookies, they now have peanut butter, nuts, cakes, desserts and brownies. I tried some of my favorites plus some of the new things:-> Coconut Cookie (I think many people don't like coconut, but for coconut lovers, this is a very hot item!!! It has a strong coconut flavor and is a bit crispy.)> Walnut Cookie and Hazelnut Cookie (this duo is my all-time favorite and is good for elderly people because you don't really need to chew it. However, it does NOT have the horrible feeling of the cookie collapsing inside your mouth and then glued to your tongue. I hate this feeling which is found in some other brands in HK.)> Japanese Matcha. This is funny. I wouldn't think Matcha would go well with cookies. But Joey's has made magic. The Matcha is strong in taste yet not bitter. The guy there told me they use Japanese Matcha.> Chocolate Chips - Thins. I am not a chocolate fan for some reason, so I don't quite like the stronger chocolate flavors such as Viennese/Dark Brownies (most of my friends like the strong ones though). So this Chocolate Chips - Thins is perfect for me as it has a good balance of chocolate taste. It is crispy and you just can't stop once you eat the first one. It brings back the good old memories of childhood because as a kid before I would eat this kind of cookie.> Coffee Almond. This one has a strong coffee taste but it does not have a strange smell which is found in other brands in HK. They guy there was very helpful. He kept explaining the very interesting things of each cookie to me although it was quite late already. He told me that it's because they use real coffee which is quite expensive, whilst many other brands use coffee extracts. After having tried Joey's Cookies, I don't think I can go back to mass production cookies. I am still extremely impressed by the amount of nuts and the quality of ingredients used by Joey's. I was a cookie idiot before, but now I can now tell which brand uses good ingredients, which brand just uses lots of butter but nothing else, and which brand has lots of flavors but they all taste the same. The visit to the shop was more than buying. It was educational too. I tasted around 12 flavors and only bought 4, but the guy still treated me as a VIP. Excellent attitude. I will try the remaining flavors of Joey's next time. I was in fact quite disappointed that their Flourless Sea Salt Cashew is often sold out though. I think they should do more of this flavor and not disappoint other customers like me.…

Barchua House
2010-03-18

Roll
2010-03-15

Tak Cheong Noodle

A very pleasant dining option
Hotpot Instinct
2010-02-24
It was the third time I went to this place. Food was fresh as usual. The various balls seemed to be made by the restaurant. This time I was particularly impressed by the service of one waitress. She knew the perfect balance of adequate service. She was never too pushy or over-attentive, yet she would always be around when we needed her. She would serve us tea and add soup at the perfect time. I will definitely go back to this place due to both excellent service and food. Of course this is not a low-end, cheap restaurant, but I'm willing to pay a bit more here.…

Good soup and chili oil
Wah Lam Noodle Restaurant
2010-02-24
I think I've been to this place more than 100 times. It opens till very late which is very convenient. Food is always good. I love the soup which is strong and the chili oil which is hot! Many people concentrate on the beef but in fact the squid ball is also exceptional. It has a very good taste and the texture is really great! One important point to note though::: they are closed quite often. For CNY, they might be closed for 2 weeks. For Easter, it could be 4 days. For Mid-Autumn Festival, it could be another 3 days. And sometimes they close on Sunday too.The only minor thing they should improve on is the milk tea. It is not bad at all, but definitely not smooth enough for me personally.…

A nice little oasis in busy Wan Chai -
Daikyo Japanese Cuisine
2009-09-20
My friends asked me to go to this Free Flow Sake Night in a relatively new Japanese restaurant in Wan Chai so I joined them. The set dinner was like a marathon. There were so many dishes. I had low expectation on set dinners normally but after the meal, I had this rare satisfaction of feeling complete both stomach-wise and soul-wise. The decor of the place was just right - classy in a contemporarily comfortable way. Small tables were arranged in zones with good privacy. Private rooms were great too for larger groups. The food... gosh!!!::::::1) First it was a nicely marinated pumpkin with smoked duck breast. To me, the pumpkin was more impressive. Not saying that the duck breast was bad, but the pumpkin was marinated to perfection. I should have asked them what crazily yummy sauce they had used.2) Assorted sashimi was above average. Fresh by HK standard. Don't compare to Tsukiji of course! But I was happy.3) Now this beef roll with tofu inside was interesting. The smooth tofu made the entire thing very smooth. Smart. The fish was very Japanese too. I am not really that much of a Japanese fish expert, but it did taste very fresh and very Jap. Nicely done.4) Fois Gras. I wish it were less oily, but gosh, can a fois gras be non-oily and non-fatty? HAHA! Very tender.5) The minced tuna sushi gave us a nice feel inside the mouth. I've forgotten how the perch tasted though.6) Oh, this combo was a killer. The pork cutlet with pork cutlet sauce and the battered fish in a very light kind of tartar sauce created a nice contrast. Strong vs light.7) I was pretty full by now. The wagyu beef was from Australia I heard. I still ate it all though!8) Fried rice - not their fault. Personally I like fried rice to be wet, but all the restaurants make it pretty dry. So probably my only complaint during the entire evening but it's completely my personal preference.9) Yuzi Sorbet - can't believe they ended this incredible meal by serving my favorite flavor of sorbet. I was in heaven by now!Overall, an impressive presentation of food, a very comfy environment and a very enjoyable dining experience. I would definitely come back, be it for casual dining with friends, for business dinners or for a romantic purpose. A 9/10 by me.P.S. The set dinner was priced at $398 with free flow sake, but many other great choices of different price ranges available on the menu.…

A tradition that must be preserved
2008-12-02
<Dai Pai Dong's> are often related to good food, rarely to hygiene. Bing Kee has both qualities. A traditional Hong Kong style Dai Pai Dong with a contemporary "feel". The good old foldable tables and round chairs are close to spotless despite the fact that automobiles drive past the tables feet away. Chopsticks are placed in double-walled containers. Bowls, spoons and forks are always dry. Garbage is non-existent on the floor.Crazily spicy mini chilies are well marinated and placed in tidy jars, whilst Japanese sesame oil is complimentary. Lettuce is of always green without a tiny spot of blackness. Pork chops are prepared to perfection texture wise.It was indeed great news that the HK Government has allowed Dai Pai Dong's to continue to exist. We need to preserve this or else Hong Kong will lose another identity.…
