Underwhelming attempt at Western cuisine
THE ALCHEMIST CAFE (K11 Art Mall)
2016-04-17
I've never been a fan of Chinese ppl who try and open a Western cafe, with no understanding or knowledge of Western food. This is just another one of those, appealing to the local palette. We ordered 2 lattes and 2 pastas, both of which were not served at the same time. The mushrooms and truffle cream spaghetti was served first and it tasted sweet, yes, I said sweet! And there was not a whiff of truffle at all. I sat there eating while my friend watched. Serving at the same time is hospitality 101! When my friend finally got her pesto pasta with green apple and asparagus, I told the waitress my pasta was too sweet. She went and told the chef and I cld hear him say he didn't add any sugar. But she never came back to the table, there was no offer of remaking the dish or a discount or basically any customer service at all. My friend's pasta wasn't sweet, it was just bland and tasteless. All in all a very disappointing lunch (not that I expected much to begin with to be honest) And there is no way I'd ever go back. …Read More

Relaxed long weekend dinner, till we got the bill!
Gutlee Sushi
2012-05-02
After the Labour Day long weekend, we just wanted to find something close by and healthy. Found this on Openrice and thought we'd give it a try. Overall, I'd say the food and the service were very good, and the price on the menu generally are ok. But we ordered the special sashimi, which was 2 kinds of fish (dunno what the fish are called in English) and we got a surprise when the bill came to just under $1000 for 2! We then found out the price of the special sashimi dish was $498. We probably should have asked the price of the specials before ordering, but we thought it was very pricey, even tho it was quite good. We ordered:Special sashimi platter of 2 kinds of fish Scallop sushiSalmon sushiOnsen egg sushi (this was very nice)Oysters cooked in clear broth (5 pieces - not bad)Edamame beans (they had little brown spots all over them, they tasted ok, but didn't look very nice)Grilled Salmon Head (was a bit pricey for $79 for just half the head)Cold Soba The quality of the food and service was quite good, so I'd go back again, but will make sure we ask the price of the specials before ordering! …Read More

Not as good as they say
Taco Chaca
2012-04-10
I read great reviews about this place in both HK Magazine and Time Out, but I have to say I was disappointed. I had the pork burrito and it was nothing special. The overall taste was bland and it was just full of rice and beans, not much pork. Plus they were VERY stingy with the salsa, only giving you one tiny little tub of it on the side. Can't say I'll be going back, even tho it's very close to my place. I'd rather go to Taco Loco in Central. …Read More

Appalling service
Entourage
2011-07-07
12 of us went to Entourage for a friend's bday and it just went from bad to worse. Drinks took forever, orders had to be repeated over and over and even then they got them wrong, the food was so so (not worth the bad service) and didn't arrive at the same time. Even the manager was clueless. The service started out bad and just got progressively worse. And it was pricey, $690 per person for just starters (to share), mains and some drinks. Won't be going back. …Read More

Lil' Siam

We came here for a friend's bday dinner and was a bit apprehensive when we heard they'd only been open 4 days. Usually people say you give a new restaurant at least a month to get their staff and kitchen sorted. But we were pleasantly surprised that their service and food were both excellent. The venue is quite small, so with a large group, it was a little cramped, but not uncomfortably so. We ordered:- Roast duck red curry - very good, stand out dish- Pepper prawns - taste was excellent, but there was only 4 prawns per serving, but they were large- Pork neck - grilled to perfection and sauce was delicious - Salt and peper tofu - well seasoned and nice and crispy- Pineapple rice - I didn't have any of this, but others said it was very good- Stir fried veges - taste was very good- Chicken skewers - again, I didn't have any of this, but it looked a little dry to me. By the time this came out, we were already quite full, so half the dish was left over. This is definitely a good find and we later found out the group who owns McSorley's owned this place, no wonder they had their act together. …Read More

Nice food and atmosphere
Tudy's Tasca Portuguesa
2010-08-04
We wanted to have a casual dinner before seeing a movie and friends had been here and said it was good. The venue is very small but the decor and atmosphere was quite cosy and inviting. The drawback of that is that any noise can be quite loud and we had a table of 6 local Hongkies next to us who talked at the top of their voices. The food and wine selection were quite good. We ordered:- Clams in white wine - taste was pretty good, not very many of them tho. But my bf had the last one and spat it out, saying it tasted funny. - Pork cubes and sausages - the size of the dish was tiny, but the taste was very good- Chorizo bread - I didn't like this dish much, it was basically warm bread rolls with slices of chorizo inside, nothing special. - Roasted bell pepper salad - quite a good mix of ingredients and tasted quite nice- Potato fries - again, nothing special, much like the french fries you get at McDonalds, but didn't have enough salt on them. - Garlic shrimp - taste and portion size was quite goodThe price was a little more than I had expected, but then again, we did have 2 glasses of alcohol with the food. Overall I would say this place was ok. …Read More

Food is ok, but the service is not
Tonkin Vietnamese Restaurant
2010-07-21
My colleagues and I have been here a few times and while the food is always good, we always have to wait for ages, regardless of whether we're dining in or taking away. Even when I call first with my order, I get there and STILL have to wait. Today, I went to get take out at lunch. After placing our order and paying and I was standing at the counter putting change back in my purse, one of the "head waiters" comes over and starts nudging me and asked me to move over. I was already moving towards the door so we could wait outside, so I told him "Can you please not touch me??" And then as my colleague and I walked a little further, he said, "Please wait outside" to which I replied loudly, "We're already walking there!!!" Like I said, while the food maybe good (not excellent) the service and atmosphere can do with a lot of improvement. …Read More

Always good food
The Mon
2010-07-21
This place is consistently good and I've been back many times and never been disappointed. I had my bday dinner here with 15 ppl. The service and food were both excellent. Some ppl who'd never been there were raving about it. And the best thing was, with all the food and drinks and sake, the cost was only around $300 per person! …Read More

What a shame about this place. From the outside, it reminded me of a cafe in Bondi, Sydney. But the food and the service were horrible. We wanted to walk around the markets and come back for lunch, so I went in to reserve a table. I spoke to the manager and got his card. When we went back, just 20 mins later, and I spoke to him again, he looked me up and down and said "Yes?". I said we had reserved a table and he had to look at the reservations book and took some time to find the booking and then sat us down at a table in the corner. We had to ask 3 times for menus and had to get up to get our own water. There were plenty of wait staff, but no one bothered coming over to where we were sitting. We ordered a dozen oysters, a fish and chips and a meatball fettuccine. The oysters were only ok, quite bland. I was told the fish and chips were nice, but my pasta was horrible. The meatballs were dry and tasteless, I left most of it on the plate. The waiter asked if everything was ok with my meal, I said no, it's not very good. They just went "Oh" and took it away, no offer of a replacement meal or a discount or even a free drink. The bill came to $800 total, not exactly cheap and definitely not value for money. When we left, my bf asked if we're coming back and I said no. He then said, maybe if we're desperate and I said, not even if we're desperate. …Read More

An example of "Chinese Western" Food
Oyster Bar & Grill
2010-07-21
Won't be going back to this place anytime soon. The only good thing about it were the oysters. They were doing a special on Coffin Bay and Pacific Rock oysters, $120 for 6, so we ordered 6 of each. The oysters were quite fresh, served with fresh lemon wedges and some sort of red sauce which I didn't have. For mains, we ordered a steak (medium rare) and a king prawn and seafood risotto. Firstly they served the steak only and it was left to get cold while we waited for my risotto, which arrived 5 mins later. The steak was more medium well than medium rare, served with 3 bits of veges and some pasta in pesto sauce. My "king prawn and seafood" risotto was completed devoid of any seafood that I could find and the texture of the risotto resembled fried rice. I left most of my meal on the plate and the waiter didn't even ask me why. My bf ate all his meal, but only because he hadn't had lunch and was starving. We thought the decor was very try hard "Mediterranean" with the horrible blue light and that guitar player, who was more annoying than entertaining. When we left, we saw a guy opening oysters near the front counter and he had his fingers all in it trying to get some of the shell out of the flesh. We also think they reused a plate of that red sauce...gross. …Read More
