Little Comfort with Coffee and Breeze
Le Pain Quotidien
2020-10-11
Having been to few of their branches, including the one in Wan Chai and in Admiralty, I have an impression that Le Pan Quotidien are located in prime locations, but with spacious and open-style interiors. Among those, this one in Tsim Sha Tsui is the best I have been to, in terms of interior and location, not just among the branches but among other cafes too.The cafe is located near the sea, in a quieter and wider part of Tsim Sha Tsui. Though it does not have the sea view but rather the road-view, it still gives one comfort and relaxation just by looking at the empty road, enjoying the breeze and the ray of sun under the shadow. Around here, you can easily spot people sharung a bottle of wine and those having Sunday brunch with the pet.The food, I would say is not the best part of this cafe, but it has the average quality and goes along with what I would expect.Below is the matcha scone with whipped cream and marmarlaid jam. I would expect the cream to be little stickier/ more durable, because once I scoop some out, the remaining cream would start to collapse and die off into a liquid. The jam is special and delicious. The scone was more of a bread-type than having a harder or biscuity texture. Thus, it felt lighter and airier. The scone did not have much flavor in it (i.e., butter), so you can always stack a bunch of cream and jam. On this day, we were served with a different scone that what we ordered, so I asked for the change. When asked, the staff was standing there aloof, staring at me. It could have been better if they were little more attentive and reactive. Additionally, the cafe appeared to be little understaffed when there were enough of them. People were often standing for a while before getting seated, unattended during dining, and even when asking for the bills.I would not go for the waffle if I were to revisit. It was too sweet and little strange. Though I have not had too many waffles in Belgium, it tasted different from what I had, and was not like local Hong Kong style waffle either. It tasted somewhat fluffier version of the scone. This is the original flavor scone, and it is similar to the one above. I just realised, it did not come with any jam.The coffee is nice here and the portion big.Generally, the whole bill was good value for money considering the vibe and the portion. If your are looking for the ‘best’ scone or coffee, this might not be the place, but if you are looking for somewhere to chill and relax, empty your mind for a bit, this is a the perfect place.…Read More

Eating soso Food In Rotation
The Grand Buffet
2020-07-01
Put it rather dramatically, this restauant was something like a light house, which I would search for to navigate in the nieghborhood. Stoop up on high among other high-rises in Wan Chai, The Grand Buffet was covered with mystery. The place is known for the extraordinary scenary on top, viewable in 360 degrees with full windows and itself - the restaurant - rotating while you sit and dine.We visit here for the lunch buffet. Unlike its unapproachable look, it is very conveniently located in the Hopewell Center, by the end of the Lee Tung Avenue. From then, we followed the the signs, and had to change the lift for twice or so, to finally reach to 62nd floor.Unlike what I originally thought - the whole head of the building rotating - it turned out that only the inner circle inside the building rotating. Having left my belonging on the bar, I later found out the thing has already rotated to another tableMy experience with the rotation was okay, not as dizzy, but still quite noticeable. I can still feel the rotation and as the time pass by, I became more conscious of it. The view was one of the best, in that you can see the mountain, sea and the city; the Island and Kowloon’s landscape all at once. For each of us, we were served with special drink. I chose milk tea.The followings are the dishes I got.The salads were nice and they had rich seasonings. The seafood section was disappointing and it did not look as fresh. It was not so appetizing.I liked their meat and poultry, whereby the chicken and Char Siu were very juicy, drizzling with oil and honey- in a delicious sense.Dim sum was another of their expertise. They were supplied in small portion in small quantity. I was not able to get it in my first round, but in my next round, I got the freshly made one. This Shumai was like a bomb. Once bite in, you will get all the juices from the crunched shrimp mingling with the tangy crab roe. I also got the Har gao, and it was another sensational experience. At last we got lots of desserts, but after all, they were not particularly special. It tasted okay. They had chocolate fondue, so we dipped some marshmallows too.Overall, I was not impressed with the quality or the variety of food. It is edible, but not so appetizing. The best part would be the Cantonese cuisine with fat and fresh Dim sums and Siu Mei. If I were to visit again, it would be for the view and these Hong Kong dishes.…Read More

Dining in Semi-Norwegian Forest
FINDS
2020-06-27
In Kimberly street lies one old European looking white building, or rather, a mansion. Inside Hotel The Luxe Manor, you can easily follow the sign to the lower ground that leads to the FINDS. I went there to celebrate birthday, as we thought trying out Scandinavian cuisine sounded exotic and fun. One discouraging factor was the decor, which gives you an atmosphere of semi-forest and more of a lounge than a restaurant. When we arrived, we saw just that, a luxurious hotel canteen. We decided to try the tasting menu, and we were informed that 5 courses comes with an extra appetizer. We stuck with 4.This bread had a very particular taste with seeds that I am not familiar with. They were very dense in texture, quite heavy in taste and grainy. It was somehow addictive, that we ended up ordering another bucket with an additional charge. This is salmon cooked in six ways, which is one of their signature dishes. Each had different seasoning for the different parts of raw salmons. I tried to enjoy them more delicately, but to me, tasted quite similar.Another appetizer was the seafood platter. After having the salmon six, they were just good tasting raw seafoods. This is the onion soup, which was okay and better with some bits of bread. We were very excited with the venison and it was well worth the expectation. The venison, which was medium-rare cooked, was very soft and juicy, and the risotto that came with it was also in harmony. The sauce was light, and un-disturbing the main meat. The portion was very small if I would compare it to a steak serving - expecting it to be less than 100g or around that. This little dish was too good that the tiny portion made me upset. The signature dessert Daim Parfait looked different from other parfaits, but it tasted really nice. We were so much into this ice cream that we did not put much attention to the ‘Daim’ candy bar, just to find out that candy bar in IKEA.Another dessert we got was a chocolate cake with a special berry. Though I was worried that he did not like that berry, the berry part was a very subtle one - just little drops on the plate for decor. FINDS prepared us special lettering and a candle for his birthday surprise.Together with the wine, we spent little less than $1200 after the 20% discount on Openrice. For a tasting menu, I thought it was an acceptable price, but for the overall experience and for the purpose of filling your tummy, I think it is of less value.Looking at the other offers in the place, I think their lunch, brunch or afternoon tea sets looks more attractive to me.…Read More

MEN WAH BING TENG (L' Wanchai)
2020-06-24
I love Men Wah Bing Teng. I love their Pineapple bun, Mexican bun, and Cocktail bun. I also think their custard bun has good crust though the filling is not my favorite. Above all, I love their Char Siu.Having been to Men Wah multiple times, I chose to try its new branch in Wan Chai. The shop was located conveniently five minutes walk away from Wan Chai A3 exit, along the main road. Since it has been a while I have had nice Char Siu, this was a place to go for, a budget-friendly, great taste, and good-for-not overeat portion options.Since restaurants now follow the regulations to install partitions, Men Wah Bing Teng also had them ready. The Cocktail bun was great, warm and fluffy and my company, a person who grew up eating one, confirmed it tasted great. Then we waited for a while to get our next one, the typical tea set with scrambled eggs, sausages, and a buttered toast with additional butter. This is not the “Chinese sausage” that some like me would not favor too much. It was delicious. It took a longer while to get this already long-waited and much expected Char Siu rice. I was hearing people sitting next to us grumping for dishes that has not yet arrived, their orders probably queued for a long time or even lost. When we asked the staff if our order is placed corrertly, they seemed irritated, stared at their little POS and told us to wait. Though I really liked this dish, my appetite was almost gone by the time it came. To get this dish, we waited more than an hour since we were seated.Even after we finished that rice, we had no clue if our drink was coming. As we asked the staff again about our drink, our message was passed to another staff and then to another senior staff who finally managed to bring this to us. So, yes, we had this not with the meal, but as some sort of dessert.I have no doubt their food is nice, and I would come back to Men Wah for it again. However, I assure that it would not be this one in Wan Chai. I understand that the partition brought the confusion, that the staff was unfamiliar with the new table settings. On top of their ineptness, their irritation and rudeness ruined my whole dining experience. I think I can expect better from the other branches.…Read More

Comfortable Dim SumIn the morning
Yat Tung Heen
2020-06-23
We visited the shop for a brunch on Friday at around 11. Fortunately, we managed to book a slot for $38 dim sum deal priorly. As I observed, the restaurant was full house by the time we arrived. It was located in lower level, in the dark, woody, and classy setting. As seated, we were served with tea. Their small appetizer was also nice. The first dish we got was a fried tofu. It was light and crispy and I remember that the sauce went very well with the dish.We also got these Shumai with the scallop, Hargao and the chicken feet. Shumai and Hargao were filled with fresh and fat shrimps, and the seasoning within were very light, blend and less oily. Chicken feet were not sticky or thick. Overall, the food made me feel comfortable and they were easy to consume, as a lazy first meal of the day. This rice roll with shrimp spring roll was one of my favorite. It was one of the best I had. The Malagao appeared special to me, because most of the traditional ones I had were brown in color and super sweet. On the other hand, Malagao here tasted lighter but little denser and wet, which I liked much. Before coming here, I was looking forward to having this deep fired Liusabao, since I am a big big fan of custard buns. First bite was good, with the crunch in the surface. Biting further in would be rather doughy and chewy texture of the dough. Then finally is a perfectly sweet and salty egg yolk. I only wished that the the dough could have been less chewy and more airy. The special part of this visit was the superior interior and service, with comfortable yet tasteful dishes. In deed the tastes were above average without being overly sugary or oily. I would love to visit here again, perhaps with my parents sometime.…Read More

Deliciously creative in the upper water street
The Ground Kitchen
2020-06-15
Even having been to the Water Street quite often, I never came across this restaurant before until I discovered it through the OpenRice. The Ground Kitchen is located in the upper end of the Water Street, near the road and the school. The restaurant was little dark with less sunlight, and the atmosphere was somewhere between western and the local shops. We had lunch during the weekday. The menu was little different from what I saw here. The set came with the warm and light soup. We also added a salad with these mini mozzarellas and cherry tomatoes. It tasted wonderful. As for the drink, we had floral tea of the day , which was the oolong tea and another was the berry. They had honest flavours, without excessive syrups. The beautiful ice cubes with colors were notable. The angel pasta with scallops in a sweet pea cream sauce was one of a kind that I have not tried before. We were discussing if it was made with spinach, avocado, broccoli and had to check the menu again to discover it was sweet peas. As can be inferred, they were super creamy, had little buttery/ fatty texture in it, and reasonably gooey. Cannot explain the taste unless you taste it yourself! I think I would as well come back for this pasta.Another dish we had was the slow cooked beef tenderloin with grilled foie gras. Portion-wise it was little small for me, but with the vegetables in the side, they were just right. In general, I liked how the sauces were just enough, saltiness well-measured, so that I could taste the flavor of the ingredients fully. I appreciate that each dish is made with great care and presentation with thoughtful effort. The dessert was included with an additional charge. We did not order it, but if there were another choice apart from pana cota, I might have tried and I expect it to be nice too :)Would like to visit here again and definitely recommend for you to try too!…Read More

Ingredients in harmony, warmth and delight
Kim & Co Cafe
2020-05-25
Somewhere away from the main road, in the quieter part of neighborhood in Sheung Wan is a Kim & Co. From the outside, I did not have a clear idea of what it has. It has everything from salad, pasta, steak to hearty brunches. As said before, the place is located in the quiet and relaxing area, while the road it overlooks is wide and rather empty. I especially like the seats upstairs with huge windows, which are opened for nice breeze. We went to the restaurant for a lazy weekend brunch. This breakkie came with deliciously juicy vegetables. Unlike some other breakfasts which are like putting together different ingredients in one plate, this dish has everything in good harmony, making itself essential to one another. As I remember, it was something related to Egyptian eggs. This was rather heavier, with half boiled eggs and sauce mixed together with the wholesome fresh veggies. We made a little try with adding one with macadamia milk and another coconut milk. I was surprised with the taste of coconut milk amplifying the already rich flavor of the coffee. It is a must try.We came here again for a small celebration and tried out their dinner menu, with the buy one get one free offer on Tuesday. They have different offers during the week, such as steak night or pasta night. This platter was good for two hungry souls. I especially liked the left one with the kimchi. Dipping it into additional spiciness with diluted gochujang was a twist further. They were very tasty. The fried layer was not too oily-- thin, yet crispy. This salmon makes your mouth full of water once you bite it. Again, the vegetables were a wonder.Since we had some drinks left, we added a little nachos. This was full of cheese, but less salsa and guac. Once I had made few big dips on them, we were only left with cheese (which is still good).I will come back here again, if I need warmth and happiness from the food. I almost felt as if taken by these dishes.…Read More

Local restaurant in Hong Kong's childhood memory
OMQ Diningroom
2020-04-06
I went to the restaurant after a long day hiking on Tai Tam reservoir. Turns out to be a blissful and wholesome compensation for the work out!The restaurant in conveniently located in the shopping mall, with an eye catching comic themed decoration of 老夫子. Though I had prejudice with cute decorations, it totally changed my mind when I got the dish! This is the sweet potato with grass jelly. They named it as black diamonds I was told that that the round square short guy's name in the comic is called purple sweet potato. It added some fun to drinking this cream topped sweet potato. This is the mixed grilled- called 美式 American style in chinese. It had bacon, pork, chicken and beef. Loads of potato chips too! It is the traditional sizzling dish, which you pour the sauce it and sizzzzzzz- The portion was very generous and the meats were thick. I think the meats were larger and more tender than other local shops. This one seemed to be a popular dish here and I give it try. I liked how Hong Kong adapted italian style(?) tomato sauce with a huge pork chop and yummy egg fried rice. We joked it is like some Spanish paella too. How international!Recommended for foreigners who wants to try local food in clean and well decorated place. Overall was a positive dining experience, having to take a peek in local's childhood entertainment. I also took a nice picture with those masters!…Read More

In the mood of romance in Spain
Ole Spanish Restaurant
2020-03-12
I was always having an eye on this restaurant, whenever passing by. I wanted to have Spanish food so much in reminiscence of my trip few years ago. Ole was exactly the place where I could fulfill my wish! We visited the place during the restaurant week.During our meal, there were two musicians playing live. The music was not intrusive and it went so well with the mood of the restaurant So our course meal began with these bread and side dishes. Absolutely loved the olives. This is the bread with a meat/ liver pasteThis is the bread topped with tomato puree, olive oil, ham and rocket. Really good combination. This is the giant cooked pepper, not spicy but crunchy and juicy.Prawns with garlic which never go wrong.Chorizo with garlic and herbs. This one of the main dishes we had. The sauce is called Solera Perigord sauce, which seems to be made inhouse. We loved the sauce so much, and it a little trace of truffles and wine. It was not like any other sauce I had, I just poured and emptied the whole thing. When thinking of a suckling pig, I was imagining the local baby pigs or the pigs you'd have for the Superpass. This was different. The crisp was to the different level- thick and Digestive biscuit type crispy, its meat softly melting in your mouth. The creme brulee was on fire. No wonder it had such strong alcohol taste in it. Wasn't my best choice, but it was better when the alcohol disappearedThe cooked pear was very new to me, but I think it worths a try!Would definitely want to revisit. It was so nice to dine in this atmosphere, with music, romantic, nostalgic setting. Waiters were very enthusiastic about the dishes, and well, they should be Must go!…Read More

Bright well-lighted place with delicious food
The Tai Pan
2020-03-08
I went to the restaurant on the Restaurant week 2020, for lunch. Getting off the elevator, there are two restaurants on each side, and we were seated on the right one.We chose the the duck terrine for a starter, slow cooked beef short rib, and daily carving of rib eye steak. The duck terrine was soft and pleasant in taste and every ingredient went so well together. Our bread came little late, but it was warm and delicious. The triangular one had some herbs in it and the long one with tomatoes. They were quite heavy, but it was so nice I cannot stop eating them.As said, the short ribs were slow cooked and they were very tender. The more interesting were their vegetables and soup which were in Chinese style. I loved the boiled Bak choi, herbs and garlic toppings, the cute little greens.Daily carving with supplement of some more dollars, were very worth the price. Again, loved their choices of sides. We get to choose some desserts from the trolley. We chose this chocolate filled with cream and rum. The run and cherry as usual went very well together and as I remember, it was not too sweet or blend. It was just right and somehow felt like a giant Ferrero Roche.Another was this Napolean dessert. It was no doubt really tasty, but the vanilla was little sweet for me.We also got coffee (70hkd), which we found out were not included in the course meal. However, it tasted very soft and rich, and I loved it!Overall, was a very pleasant experience in a well lighted, white environment. The staff were very attentive and friendly, keeping good track of your meal and experience. Would like to come back!…Read More

Thai style home food
Thai Heng Thai Food Restaurant
2020-02-05
In the outside it looks like a Hong Kong local restaurant, lacking some Thai decorations or so-called mood. Though I passed by this restaurant so often, it took me quite some time to finally get in. When you taste the food, you know you'd regret not knowing this place earlier. One of my favorite dish is the Phad Thai. Generous portion with reasonable amount of meat and vegetables. I think it was little sweet .My another favorite is the morning glory. No explanation necessary. It was just in right level of salt and pepper. Little spicy as I remember, goes well with the nuts on top. This chicken contains the scent if a leave within. It is very juicy and tender. It was a shrimp with eggs and curry. Not the best dish I would say. This was my first time having it, so didn't have the best idea of how it should be. It was a curry but very watery with lots of coconut milk (I suppose). The shrimps were nice but I thought it didn't quite blend in together with the sauce. Ended up only eating the shrimps inside. The waiter here is super nice, but when it is crowded, I had to actively seek for attention. The serving time is reasonably fast and overall, a pleasant homey dining.…Read More

Cake that makes you happy
Infiniti C
2020-02-05
Located three minutes walk from the Kennedy town station, Inifiti C became one of my favorite cake shops around this area. I would always find this place for a nice, feeling-good cake with a fragrant, warming coffee. The place offers diverse options of gluten-free, vegan, keto etc. cakes. I myself do not have special preference and originally would not go for these options, but I found it pleasantly surprising that the cakes could taste so nice without those ingredients. This is the Signature Earl Grey cake. I had it when I visited there for the first time, and it definitely worths a try.Hojicha berry cake with a trace of charcoal and berries. I personally felt the taste is very strong.Black forest cake not like any black forests I had before. I had it in outdoor seating. Mind that there is a cigarette place next to the seat. There was a smoker and the ashes flew towards me..Lychee cake with permanganate and strawberry. There were chunks of lychee meat between the layers. I loved it.For coffee, I only had black and flat white. I find it particularly nice when you get white with a soy milk. The coffee is not big but it is reasonably priced and fragrant.…Read More

Private and cozy, but not the best service
Tai Ping Koon Restaurant
2020-01-21
Tai Ping Koon was a very private looking place. Curtains covering the glass door, person opening the door, and very quiet setting. The size of the restaurant was just right, and it was not crowded. It gives you an impression of colonial era, high class dining place.People were wearing proper suits, but I think it was little over-staffed. Most of the time, they were standing between tables to serve more tea. I went there little early and waited a friend inside, but they were little rushing for me to order. Asking 3 times if I am ready to order when I said she is coming. Perhaps they did not understand. We ordered two main dishes and a side. The chicken wings were famous in here. In deed they were very delicious with a strong sauce. The wings were one of the most meaty I had ever tried You can choose either 4 pieces or 8.I chose the Ox tongue. It was my first time having it, but personally did not like it much. It was salty and seemed to be poached in a salt water. The texture was soft and chewy, but I think people would have different preference to this dish.Another main was the fried noodle. It tasted really good, I can't stop eating! The noodles were cooked right, the sauce well blended together and the ingredients were in generous portion. Spent 200+ per head. It was worth the experience, but the service could be better. Wish to try the huge souffle too…Read More

Small and diverse dishes
PUTIEN (Mira Place Two)
2020-01-17
Went to the place past 7:30 for dinner. It was easy to locate and there were still many people dining. The manu was thick, its dishes ranging from sea food, different kinds of meat, vegetable, and many desserts.First it begins with a tea which had a trace of spice. The serving time is average and the staff efficient. The first we got was a clam. The photo was taken before eating. The portion was small. However, the sauce was tasty and not too spicy. It was freshly cooked as it was very hot Again, the yellow fish was small. We each had two big bites and it was gone If you would want more, make sure to order two portions. The meat was very tender, the sauce wasn't strong or salty. The noodle we had was said to be a recommended dish. Unlike what we expected, it was more of a sticky sort of soup. There were lots of sea food in it. I think it is just right for two people. I also liked the vegetable here, which was more of in Thai style. The portion wa big, wasn't able to finish it after having all the other.I would call this deep fried duck sandwiched in yam one of my favorites. As said, the chewy and juicy duck meat was in between this yam, which made a surprising combination. We were thinking maybe a good sweet sauce would go well with it too since it could be little blend for some.Ordered five dishes and finished all except the vegetable. I think the portion was just right. This restaurant could be the best if you want to try a little bit of everything, in good quality. Spent little more than I expected, but definitely worth it!…Read More

Went there to celebrate a special day! The restaurant was just inside the Peninsula hotel up two stories. The bread was good taste but it could have been better if they were warm. The butter was really good We ordered a cheese fondue with potatoes and macaroni. The portion was very generous that by the time we (two) finished them, we already had lots of CarboWe had two main dishes. The pike perch was well cooked and the flavor of the sauce was not strong with little trace of citron in it. I loved the mashed potato and the deep fried basil on the top.Another was the veal. It was soft, juicy and delicious. Finally, they gave us small desserts. The left was a Napoleon cake with a strong cinnamon taste and the right was mousse covered crunchy with citron filling. They also prepared us ice cream surrounded with dark chocolate in a house shape. You can request for the custom lettering for special occasion! The interior was dark and cozy. There were curtains and carpets. It really felt as if I were back in Switzerland! The staff was very attentive and helpful. They were particularly friendly. It was a perfect dining experience…Read More
