If the 肉骨茶 was bad, the 叻莎...
Bak Kut King
2012-01-02
The 叻莎 was pretty bad. After my first bite, I actually though about getting the bill and go across the street to eat at 潮民. I did stay and finish it to not waste food, but I couldn't touch the soup. The soup should be the highlight of a 叻莎, but this was a funky yellow salty water, didn't taste any coconut milk. I normally finish all soup, even if it is 味精 soup, but I have to leave this one alone. My wife had the 肉骨茶, and surprisingly it was bad. The soup tasted wrong, probably because the herbs/medicine mix wasn't right. The meat lacked favor, probably because it was put in the last minute. For 肉骨茶, 楊氏 or 拿督 is much better. Service, however, is very good. Staff/service was fast and attentive. Price was very affordable. …Read More

Al dente pasta
208 Duecento Otto
2010-07-24
Solid though desert was weakWe had tomato with mozzarella and pork tongue for appetizers and fennel with roasted tomato pasta and pork neck with spicy tomato sauce pasta for main. All were solid. The pastas were perfectly al dente with just enough sauce. Desert and tea were the weakest links. We had fritters and Italian bread pudding. The fritters were just fried bread, really nothing special. The bread pudding was chewy, maybe Italian bread pudding is different than the English. The ginger and mint tea were literally water with sliced ginger and fresh mint. Service was good though it felt under-staff when the place became full. The decoration was good, though it was not the quietest place I have been to, probably because the ceiling was low, but it wasn’t so loud that is was comfortable or intrusive. Finally, portion was on the small side though it was perfect for us, so surely some ppl will complain about value for money. …Read More

Very average
The French Window
2010-02-16
Food is very average, though the decoration is nice and staff is attentive. My wife and I order a la carte. Nothing knocked us out, though nothing was bad. We had beef tartar and smoked salmon as starter, and lobster two-ways and quail for main. The lobster two-way was the only one memorable with the laksa soup. However, the cheese was very good. Like the early writer, the Comte was very good. There is nothing wrong with quality, just nothing stood out. In fact, I am pretty sure they use very good ingredients e.g. the quail was actually very “gamey” in contrast to the normal tasteless quail that we often get in HK. Of the recent newer restaurant we had been to, this is behind Cafe Gary. And if memory serves me tight, it is also behind Robuchon and Caprice. Good view and probably good enough for a special occasion dinner, but we won’t be back. …Read More

Very yummy!
Wasakuraya

Have seen this place in a few magazines and openrice a few times, so my wife and I tried it after dinner in Happy Valley. It completely blew us away... very good, rich, creamy, flavorful... The plain egg custard is our favorite (with 5 sauce to choose from). The flavored ones are good, but the plain one is the best. …Read More

Divine Oysters
Bentley's Seafood Restaurant & Oyster Bar
2009-08-23
My wife and I think this is best oyster restaurant. Good selection of oyster. Not the most, but all the oyster are good. My wife has been there a couple times, and the selection differed slightly. Main course is solid too - fish and chips really good, lobster pasta very tasty... Price is not the cheapest, but oyster is not meant to be cheap in Hong Kong, and, some times we have to pay for quality, and oyster is one of those. Service is very good, although I think the lady almost over-does it. The oyster chef is very good. He knows oyster, and you can chat with him and tell you all about each oyster. …Read More

Best Sushi in Town for Dinner
Sushi Hiro
2009-05-02
This is by far the best sushi place I have been to on HK Island, and I have tried a lot of them on the Island (not TST). The way to get a proper tasting of this restaurant is to come here for dinner and ask the chef to pick everything (and not order youself). It will be expensive, but you get what you paid for. I have went to many other well-known and similar priced JP restaurant and Sushi Hiro is much better. …Read More

Good value and food
Al Petra
2009-04-19
Went there for lunch with wife. For $90, you can soup/soda and main with rice & vegetables. The lamb stew is very tasty with good quantity of spices. Rice was fluffy and fragrant. The seating is much more comfortable than SoHo. Tables are not as packed together. Definitely a good choice for lunch since you can also skip the hike up hill.…Read More

Authentic JP diner
Ichiban
2009-04-06
I come here quite a lot though never come around to write a review. 1s thing 1st, it is a family style restaurant, so service is spotty. I am a regular customers and sometimes don't get good service if the place is busy. But, why do I always come back? 炸牛肉漢堡, 燒牛舌, 燒飯糰, and the enviornment. Ichiban makes the best 燒牛舌 and 炸牛肉漢堡 sounds weird but is really good. The evironment there is awesome. Eating there is just like eating at a small eatery in Tokyo, and some of the staff has been there for over 10 years, so it feels like going home whenever I go to Ichiban. Be patient and the place will grow on you. …Read More
