Good, but overpriced

Went here for brunch after reading the good reviews and wanting to try someplace new.  I had a craving for fried chicken, so naturally went for the chicken & waffles, while the gf got the catfish.  The wait was slightly on the long side, especially since we were starving, but the dishes both came at the same time, which does make a good impression (I absolutely loathe restaurants that serve one dish first, then bring the other 10 minutes later, you either have to be rude and have the other person watch you eat then you watch them eat after you finish your dish and theirs arrives, or your food goes cold).  There were a couple of problems though.  The catfish itself was very nice.  However, one of the poached eggs was completely cooked through; very rookie mistake, especially in a $168 dish.  The other problem was the chicken & waffles.  The seasoning was spot on, loved it.  Great crispy batter too.  However, out of the 3 pieces, 2 were overcooked, tough, breast meat and only the 3rd piece, I think thigh, was tender and juicy.  The waffles don't appear "home-made" to me, they seem to be more the frozen kind. Also, this is just personal taste, but they don't give you maple syrup or an imitation maple syrup, they give you something which tastes like molasses.  All in all, I think Green Waffle Diner does this particular dish better, and cheaper.  Maybe I'd have a different opinion if they didn't use breast meat for the chicken, had better waffles, and maple syrup.  Last problem; dessert.  We tried the pumpkin pie, which cost over $70.  I was expecting a nice thick slice from a bigger pie.  Instead, we got a mini tartlet, about 4" in diameter, with an undercooked bottom.  I wouldn't pay $30 for this dessert.  If I come again, I will stick to savory dishes. …ดูเพิ่มเติม

Simply great
Les Fils à Maman
2014-02-16
I've seen this place from afar a few times now, and finally got around to going.  I thought I wasn't going to be able to make it, last order is at 2 for lunch.  Fortunately, the nice man called me back and told me that it is at 2:30 on Saturdays (and apparently it is even later on Sundays), so by speedwalking from the MTR, I was able to make it.  And I will definitely be coming back again! As a starter, we had the foie gras creme brulee, and I'll cut right to the chase, it was divine.  Not pure foie gras, but something half-way between a mousse and a pate, topped with perfectly caramelized, crunchy sugar.  The amount you get for the price is more than enough for 2 hungry people.  It comes with a little bucket of sliced bread (not quite enough bread).  For the mains, we got the sole fillet with mussels and ratatouille, and the boeuf bourguignon.  The sole was alright, not that special unfortunately (and for a restaurant that has a rather limited choice on the menu, I'd expect it to be a bit better, frankly).  The ratatouille was quite nice (but the ratatouille is not meant to be the star of the dish), and the mussels weren't great.  The boeuf bourguignon on the other hand, is at least as good as anything you'll find in France (and better than virtually all the tourist traps in Paris which serve a pitiful excuse for a bourguignon), and being French, I do know what I'm talking about here!  The red wine flavour is nice and rich, the beef is lovely and tender (they use a nice fatty cut which just melts in the mouth, not the tough chewy kind), and there is a lot of it!  They don't try and shortchange you on the meat, that's for sure.  It came served in a small casserole pot, which was full to the brim with the beef itself, not just 3-5 tiny pieces swimming in sauce as you sometimes find.  The home-made fries were very tasty too, and the presentation was rather cute, with everything being served on a wooden board instead of a plate. Finally, the service was great, very friendly staff who are more than willing to have a chat with customers, lovely atmosphere and decor.  Can't wait until I go back again (I want to try that camembert with apple)! We paid $330 for 2 persons, and felt as though we had eaten enough for twice that number.  In terms of price/quality and overall satisfaction, I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant. …ดูเพิ่มเติม

Cafe Deadend
2013-12-09
Cafe deadend is a bit hard to reach for those of us who don't live on island side.  We have to take the MTR, then bus, then walk (or just walk quite far after the MTR to Sheung Wan).  But after trying it, I can say without hesitation that I'll definitely be back.  It does get crowded, even before 12 we had to wait for a table.  The food was great.  The bread selection was good, the jam tasted lovely, the mini-baguette was delicious.  The poached eggs on prosciutto were mouth-watering, and the apple tart was to die for.  The "dirty" was very nice too, although I wish they'd sweeten it a bit (I was going to add sugar, but a helpful waitress told me to try drinking it without mixing and to do it quickly, which does make it better as you get more milk mixed in with the coffee, making it less bitter). The mocha was reportedly one of the best in HK according to the girlfriend.  The atmosphere of the place is great too, other than the people waiting for a table standing around making it more crowded than it should be.  It's a very calming and peaceful corner, and I can understand why they chose the location.  It takes you away from the daily hustle and bustle of HK life.  …ดูเพิ่มเติม

Very nice italian at reasonable prices
Buddy's Kitchen
2013-11-22
Nice little Italian restaurant, the decor is quite decent, the open kitchen seems a bit cramped, but is nice to look at.  The food itself is great, very good value.  Finally I've found a place that does proper risotto in Hong Kong, the truffle oil was not overwhelming, just a hint of the truffle flavour, the poached egg was perfectly done, and the portion size was good (although I wouldn't have minded a bit bigger).  The lamb rack was nice too, well cooked to order, good quality lamb, thick and juicy, the vegetables were actually very nice unlike the inedible, tasteless cardboard-like stuff you sometimes get in restaurants as decoration for the meat.  The tiramisu was very good too, great taste, good texture (not sure if they added the amaretto though, couldn't taste it).  I will definitely come back again! …ดูเพิ่มเติม

Finally, great American food in HK
Anthony's Ranch
2013-09-07
I'm a big fan of American food, so I've been looking for a nice restaurant in HK where I could find food that comes somewhat close to what is available in the US.  The usual chains you think of when someone mentions American food are downright bad compared to Anthony's Ranch.  The service here is friendly, the atmosphere is good, and the food is wonderful.  The ribs are very meaty and moist, not dry and tough like you usually find in Hong Kong.  The sauce is served separately so you can decide how much of it you want (all of it!), not baked into a dry crust.  The burger buns are, I believe (and I may be wrong) potato rolls, a little bit sweet, very soft and fluffy, just perfect.  The prices are on the high side for this type of food, but for Hong Kong, I suppose it is average.  Count $300+ per person if you go for 2 dishes each.  You do get free peanuts though.  Will definitely be coming back for those ribs. …ดูเพิ่มเติม

As good as or better than the CWB location!
Fleur de Sel
2013-05-12
I loved the Fleur de Sel in CWB. Unfortunately I live quite far from CWB and getting there is a hassle. So imagine my joy when they opened one in SoHo! I have to say this one seems to be a bit better than the original, not sure why. It is also quite a bit emptier, again, not sure why. Delicious, reasonably priced, authentic French crepes in SoHo, it really should be quite full on a Saturday night. Either way, every time I've been here, I've had great friendly service, waiters who aren't too busy or uptight to have a small chat and make recommendations or answer questions, and thoroughly enjoyed the whole dining experience, though admittedly the windows could be a bit more soundproof. The last time I was there we tried a Truffle crepe and a French May special, the Bourguignonne, snails and lardons. Both were delicious (though I think leaving out the optional camembert from the Truffe would be a good idea as it is heavy and tasty enough as it is, and will save you $20 in the process). The Bourguignonne did not skimp on the escargots, and was very well cooked. The dessert crepes were amazing as always, the special French May choice was one with pannacotta and red fruits (I forget the name), unusually tied up into a bundle with some type of string candy. The fresh, tangy-ness of the fruit went perfectly with the sweet whipped cream and chocolate crepe. I hope to see this one staying on the menu after the French May is over. And of course you must have some cidre with the crepes, it really enhances the flavour and counteracts the richness. For a 2 person meal with 4 crepes and 2 cups of cider, we spent $530, extremely reasonable. To sum up, Fleur de Sel Central makes for a great romantic dinner or even just with friends. The food is priced right and tastes great, the atmosphere is very nice, the service is friendly, and the location is convenient. *the phone will usually be answered in French in my experience, but don't let that put you off since they speak perfectly good English too. …ดูเพิ่มเติม

Good crepes in a lovely setting
Fleur de Sel
2013-04-18
I am writing this review as a Frenchman, used to amazing, authentic French crepes in France. So I am going to be picky.First, the setting and decor. I like it, it is nice and casual, and surprisingly quiet. The atmosphere is very relaxing, you can almost forget you're right in the middle of CWB. On to the food. It is good, but not outstanding, the toulouse sausage galette for example, is a little bit bland and has too much onion, and some of the toppings on the other choices are a bit odd (i.e. non-traditional). I feel that "la creperie" in Wan Chai has better galettes, but fleur de sel really shines for dessert crepes, and the service is definitely better here. Their namesake, the salted caramel, is delicious. If you have a small appetite, I recommend sharing a galette between two so you have space for dessert. You can't really say you've been to a creperie unless you have both a galette and a dessert crepe, and washed it all down with cider (this last part is essential, galettes and cider go together like salt and pepper, or fish and water). It is definitely on the pricy side, but this is to be expected; even in France, going to the creperie isn't exactly cheap. …ดูเพิ่มเติม

High prices for subpar food
Sal Curioso
2013-04-18
I went to this restaurant with high hopes; tapas style food with friends is always fun, right? And this type of restaurant in this location, you would normally expect at least decent food. We were a party of 6, so were able to order quite a few things off the menu. My review, then, is based on practically half their available dishes, not just a small unrepresentative sample. To put things into perspective, our final bill was around $3,000. For that price, I expect everything to be perfect or damned-near. Oh how wrong I was. The service was decent and presentation for the most part was nice, the only saving graces for this disappointing establishment. Nothing stood out as particularly good. The sea bass was the only dish that even got remotely close to "good". The ribs were not very tender, and portion size was tiny for what they call "social" platter, which implies sharing. The same goes for the buttermilk chicken, which came recommended. There were 3 pieces. $250 for 3 pieces of overcooked, dry (and by dry I mean as dry as the bloody Atacama desert), flavourless cardboard. When they say the chicken is rubbed with spices, what they really mean is this: there is a 1cm thick coating of spices around the chicken, which will not have given any flavour whatsoever to the meat itself. The other dishes we had were so unremarkable in taste and texture that I cannot write anything meaningful about them other than they were not horrid. I was also looking forward to the cheesecake (I love cheesecake, in all shapes and forms, I have a separate cheesecake stomach just for it.) But after the main courses, although I was still hungry (did I mention the tiny portions?), I could not bring myself to order another disappointment which I'm sure it would have been. One more thing to note: we were told that we couldn't order a few "deals" to share between the 6 of us if we intended to order some other bits and pieces to go along with them, it was either only "deals" or no "deal" at all. Finally, to the prices. They are outrageous. Period. The food here is absolutely not worth the prices they ask. Even half would be asking a lot. Again the chicken as an example: $250 gets you something approximately the same size as a KFC set menu, but much worse in both taste and texture (yes, worse than KFC). And you are supposed to believe that this is for sharing. Between more than 2 people (2 people does not a "social" event make, therefore calling your platters "social" implies sharing between more than 2 people.) Come on. Get real. …ดูเพิ่มเติม
