I love Dim Sum
PEKING GARDEN (Metroplaza)
2016-12-29
We went to Peking Garden for dim sum brunch.  During the morning period (i.e., before 11am), the dim sum price is standardized to HK$22 each (except some steamed dishes, such as 蝦餃 & 腸粉).  Chinese tea is charged at HK$12 per person.  The decoration and style of the dinning room is elegant and modern.  Table setting, tableware, and tea pots are all beautiful and grand.  We ordered 11 dim sum and I personally enjoy all of them.  The 潮州水晶包, 叉燒腸粉, 芋絲春捲 are the most impressive items to me.  The seating are comfortable.  Table cloth is clean and tidy.  No broken tableware.  Except the receptionist, all staffs are well-trained and polite.  If time permit, I wish I can have another dim sum brunch again on my last day in Hong Kong. …Read More

Surprisingly great!
Lucullus Chocolate Cafe
2016-12-29
Two scones, one sweet flavour (raisin) and the other one is savory (bacon & onion).  I can't believe that they are simply defrosted and reheated items.  I guess, the method Lucullus used to defrosted the scones, is the key to bring such great scone to his customer.  The Hawaii croissant contains filling of chopped ham and pineapple and topped with cheese.  Again, the reheat/defrost method cause such wonderful taste.  The americano (hot coffee) taste excellent and gave me a wonderful refresh in the late morning.  The mango iced tea is an upgraded item (i.e., 50% off from the a la crate menu price) and it taste fair, strong fruity mango taste.  We bought 6 pieces of macaroons, simply because of the attractive price ($60 for 6 pieces).  The quality is totally reflected on the affordable low price.  As a inexpensive snack, why not!?Having considered (1) the quality and taste of food, (2) price, (3) freshness, (4) friendliness of the store manager and other staffs, and (5) cleanliness, this store will be on my re-visit list.  …Read More

Lan Fong Yuen
2015-10-07
As usual, the classic Lan Fong Yuen (茶餐廳) was "full house".  Thus, we went to the 車仔麵 section of Lan Fong Yuen instead.  If I am allowed to choose my food, noodles in soup is seldomly being on my food wishlist.  However, this restaurant also offer steamed rice as an alternative to noodles in soup.  Under the "Chef's Recommendation", there are 6 different kinds of food (蘿蔔牛"月南" / 五香牛什 / 鹵蛋雞翅 / chiu 洲鹵味 / 泰式豬腿飯 / 貴 faye 雞飯 ) which comes with selection of 幼麵 / 粗麵 / 油麵 / 飯, at HK$50 with tea/coffee.  We ordered 五香牛什飯 and 泰式豬腿飯 with the complimentary beverage of 酸梅湯. 1.  五香牛什飯:  In terms of its price of HK$50, the portion is a surprise.  We enjoy the 牛肚,牛"月南", 牛腸.  The radish is surprisingly brilliant but the steamed rice is too dry and hard in texture.    2.  泰式豬腿飯:  Although its taste is as good as the 五香牛什, the texture of this pig's leg is extremly chewy.  Neither the skin nor the pork meat can be chew by normal human's tooth.  I wish I have knife and fork to cut the pig's leg meat.  Again, the radish at the bottom is brillian while the steamed rice is too dry and hard in texture.Inside environment:  Walls are decorated by Alan Tam's sound album cover image (It seems like photocopy of the music album covers instead of the original LP cover).  For those who listen Alan Tam's music at their 20~ 30s may be impressed.  Otherwise, it's nothing to them.  The final bill is HK$100 and successfully feed 2 adults.  Except the chewy texture of 泰式豬腿飯 and the super-dry steamed rice, we really enjoy this meal, especially the marinated radish which can be found at the bottom of the bowl.  I think this Lan Fong Yuen is a good place to dine if you drop by TST WK.…Read More

Food is fine but it's 千兵萬馬
agnès b. Café LPG
2015-10-07
We ordered 2 patisserie and 2 beverages at a total of HK$137.Pastry 1: Valérie (HK$38)From my point of view, this is a chestnut cake, a delicious chestnut cake with layers. According to the official website, it is made by layers such as chestnut purée, chestnut mousse, vanilla sponge cake, Chantilly cream, and meringue. Although this pastry is made in a central factory (probably mass production), I still love this little fancy chestnut cake.Pastry 2: Vanille (HK$38)After ordering the "Valerie", the staff suggested us the "Vanille" which is basically a vanilla napoleon. According to the official website, it is made by walnut, vanilla custard, puff pastry - a classic napoleon cake. When I taste napoleon cake, I usually focus on 3 things: (1) the texture of puff pastry; (2) texture and sweetness of custard filling; and (3) the overall setting (i.e., does it stick together?). My comment is that: (1) The texture of the puff pastry is tough and hard. It's nothing in relation to the term "crispy"; (2) The texture and taste of the custard filling is marginally acceptable. However, the custard is slightly loss of moist (with a relatively dry surface); (3) It has no problem to stick together. Thus, I regret to tell you that this vanille (vanilla napolean pastry) may not be a good choice to you. (p.s., suddenly, I’m missing the napoleon pastry shop located in the neighborhood of Tin Hau Station)Beverage 1: San Pellegrino (HK$25)A bottled orange flavored soda which can be found in supermarket such as three-sixty. Thus, I have no comment on it.Beverage 2: Casablanca tea (HK$36)According to the tea bag label, this cup of tea was brewed by a Mariage Frères tea bag. As per the official website of Mariage Frères (www.mariagefreres.com), this "Casablanca" blend is under its "French summer Tea" collection which is a mix of green tea, Moroccan mint, and bergamot (佛手柑).  For those loves mint tea, don't miss this tea and check this out. By the way, bergamot did a great job to enhance mint flavor in green tea.My concern:The environment of this agnès b. Café is very crowd and noisy. Since it’s located in the sidewalk of Gateway of Harbour City, it’s not surprised to see thousand and thousand of tourist there, of which Mainlanders probably is the majority. So, you can imagine the situation and noise there. If you are looking for a place for refreshment, I personally won’t suggest this restaurant since you have other similar choices in Harbour City. However, if you are a diehard fans of agnès b. , please forget what I said. I personally don’t mind re-visiting agnes b café but not this location.…Read More

Good food & good price (afternoon tea period)
Wang Jia Sha
2015-09-29
After meeting my old client whose office is located in the commerical tower of this mall, my colleague (a fresh grad guy) brought me to this mall for a rest.  Instead of coffee shop such as Pacific Coffee and/or Greyhound, this little young guy brought me here.  He told me that the afternoon tea section of Wang Jia Sha is a good place to sit comfortably at relatively affordable price.  (Well, his opinion is true to me.)We ordered 2 afternoon tea sets.  Each set includes a beverage, shanghai style dim sum, and a mini size main dish, at around HK$45 plus 10% services charge.  We chosen 小籠包 and 煎鍋貼 as the dim sum, 炒年糕 and 擔擔麵 as the main course.  The beverages are iced plum tea and chrysanthemum tea.  Our young guy recommended the 菜肉蒸包 (a la carte).  上海點心 (小籠包):  This xiao long bao has successfully replaced Dai Tai Fung to be my favoriteXiao Long Bao - 鮮味的豬肉餡~皮薄餡 'lan".   上海點心 (煎鍋貼):  This fried dumplings looks simple and nothing special but the skin is crispy and smell so attractive.  主菜 (炒年糕): This dish is above average and taste great.  I think the chef is skillfull on controlling the seasoning and moist of this dish. 主菜 (擔擔麵):  soup of dan dan men is the king.  This soup is thick and strong.  I personally consider this is the local 最高の担々麺~ Again, it replaced Lai wing yuen and dan tan fung.  菜肉蒸包 (a la carte):  These buns took us almost 20 minutes from ordering to arriving our dinning table.  Fresh and hot, soft and tender bun texture, as well as delicious pork fillings.  The final bill was a about HK$125.  Good price, good food, comfortable sofa chairs, and friendly staffs.  I found nothing to be complained.  …Read More

I love 香酥大雞扒
Madam's Kitchen
2015-09-26
We ordered two sets: 雞扒滷肉飯餐 ($78) and 台灣牛肉麵餐 ($65), beverage inclusive.  Our choice of beverage is 肧芽珍珠奶茶 & 香芋珍珠奶茶.  Right after taken the order, two 豆腐海帶湯 and 甜酸黃瓜黑木耳 (part of the 滷肉飯餐)are delivered to our table.  As we expected, that's simply a clear soup without strong or unique taste from either tofu or seaweed.  The 甜酸黃瓜黑木耳 taste a bit "too sour" for most of the customer (i.e, me).  Then, the peral milk tea delivered.  Again, we don't put a lot of expectation on the beverage because our real target is not bubble tea.  Surprisingly, both peral milk tea taste not bad but can be stronger in taste (i.e., add more milk tea powder).  After 5 minutes, both the 香酥大雞扒 & 滷肉飯, and 台灣牛肉麵 were delivered. Both of the 雞扒 & 滷肉飯 are excellent and I wish to have a larger portion .  Basically, the 台灣牛肉麵 should be ranked at a relatively high score (i.e., 8/10).  Unfortunately, I had another 台灣牛肉麵 in a local chain store called Tea Wood on the previous day, I regret to consider this beef noodles is good but not very good.  (p.s., I prefer the beef, soup, and type of noodles of TEA WOOD's beef noodles more than this store (Madam's Kitchen), simply due to my personal preferrence.  I wish this store can stay there during my next HK trip.  …Read More

我愛燒肉 ... 但我更愛燒乳豬 ~
Wing Hap Lung Restaurant
2015-09-22
We ordered 燒肉飯, 乳豬飯, and 1 can of coke.  Although those 燒肉 contains little fat layer, the meat textue is extremly tender and juicy.  Those 乳豬 looks fat but the skin is extremly crispy and the suckling pig meat are also soft and juicy.  As a die-hard fans of Wing Hop Lung, I found no reasons for not having a meal there during my 2-weeks stay in HK.  If I can rank both Wing Hop Lung ("WHL") and Tai Hing ("TH"), I probably offer the same overall score to them.  However, WHL offers extremely high quality of food while TH is able to strive the balance between environment/services/food quality.  Thus, I would give a 9.5 /10 to WHL (food only) since its services and environment is purely a traditional 燒蠟店 (i.e., 零裝修和零服務)  The final bill was about HK$115.  Just a friendly reminder, most of the 燒蠟 are salty in taste.  So, please prepare a bottle of beverage / water after having 燒蠟 (including WHL's) …Read More

極上の酢豚 (candidate only ~)
Chun Chun Restaurant
2015-09-22
After visiting my old client in Wah Lok Industrial Building, we walked to this traditional food which is one of the restaurant I want to try during these years. It was 2:45pm when we arrived.  The waiter said that the lunch set is still available even thought that supposed to be the time for afternoon tea food.  I ordered a sweet & sour pork rice set (around HK$35) with hot milk tea.  If I'm asked to rank this sweet & sour pork set, I'm sure I will give a relatively high score (9/10) to this restaurant.  However, both the rice and the milk tea are average score of 6/10 because of the low temperature of rice and poor texture of milk tea.If you walk by this area, I suggest you to try the sweet & sour pork.  And my advice is that Lunch set is the best deal. …Read More

SURA Korean Cuisine
2015-09-16
Since my wife got a groupon ticket (for soy sauce lunch set) from her relative, we visited this restaurant.  The soy sauce crab lunch set: It includes appetizers (5 small dishes), one soy sauce crab, seaweed on rice, Korean style pork tofu soup, and after meal beverage (kind of a fruit vinegar for digestion purpose!?).  According to my wife, that groupon worth HK$200 (service charge inclusive).  A.  Soy Sauce Crab set (HK$200, services charge inclusive)5小碟 are refillable.  Their looking are not attractive and I only tried the kimchi and had it refilled.  My wife said potato and bean sprouts are fair.  This is my first time seeing black bean as appetizer on Korean dinning table.  It taste "not bad" but simply I don't appreicate such chewy and teeth sticking texture.  Soy Sauce Crab: according to my relative (the groupon ticket offeror), soy sauce crab becomes popular in Hong Kong these days.  This is my first time seeing raw crab soaked in soy sauce (instead of chinese wine "fa dill").  Since I'm not a hot fans of crab, I only ate the crab shell and left the rest to my wife.  My wife and I consdier that it's a bit salty and the soy sauce cover the freshness (if any) of the crab. Korean style pork tofu soup: This is a common dish in most of the Korean restaurant. Its taste is normal level of hot & spicy (except a bit salty) but the amount of tofu and pork are so little.  Dried seaweed on rice: Crispy dried seaweed is a good match with steamed rice (opinion form a "rice bucket")After meal beverage: kind of a fruit vinegar.  It's not recommended to those who has bad stomach.  B.  Lunch set for 2 (for the 3rd annversity for this restaurant), at special price HK$68Since the portion of the soy sauce crab set is not enough for us, we ordered this promotional lunch set to fill my stomach.  It includes 烤鯖魚, 豬肉豆腐湯, 2 bowls of steamed rice.  The taste of this meal is at marginally average level. The grilled fish is not crispy but tough in texture.  The pork tofu soup is similar to that in the crab set.  I would consider that the price is directly correlated to to the food quality this time.  Frankly speaking, the dinning room environment and services are excellent.  However, the food quality is average only.  If you are looking for good korean food, you may do some more research on the internet (Openrice is highly recommended).  If you are looking for average food but good dinning environment, I may suggest you to consider this restaurant.  …Read More

豚丼が大好き
Dondonya
2015-09-16
Dondonya is one of my favorite Japanese restaurant in Element because of its excellent location in the mall, relatively reasonable price, above-average quality (among other local chain japanese restaurants), and dinning room design.  最重要的是: 我是飯桶We ordered Butadon (豚丼), deep-fried oyster set, seafood don 海鮮丼, and a 親子丼 (from the kid's menu for my son).  We olaso ordered a 炸章魚 and 炸豆腐&蝦 as appetizers.  Butadon: Although its presentation is not attrative, the overall taste of this set is not bad (excellent flavour and taste~).  Deep-fried oyster set: Fresh oyster + crispy skin + unlimited cabbage & rice.  What I can compliant?  Seafood don: Fresh seafood + reasonably sizeable & price.  Again, I can't find anything to complaint.親子丼 (from Kid's menu): Overcooked eggs + 雪味粗糙質感的雞肉 makes me to put this food to the "一次就夠" listAppetizers: both 炸章魚 and 炸豆腐&蝦 are excellent.  We really enjoy the 炸豆腐.  Beverage:  The pineapple flavour is acceptable but the mint flavour makes me put it to the "一次就夠" list.  The final bill was about HK$900. I believe that I will revisit this restaurant during my next Hong Kong trip.  …Read More

The Night Market (ELEMENTS圓方)
2015-09-14
We ordered two afternoon tea dim sum set and some dishes.  The quality is good for 4 adults.  Taiwanese dim sum: 麻糬三杯雞球 and 紫菜蚵仔卷 creative dishes.  However, they are not prefect because of seasonings and final texture.  炸芋丸 is just an "so-so" dish.  Since most of the other dishes are not preferable, let me describe dish that I recommend you to try.   1.  咸蛋炸苦瓜: 咸蛋 & 苦瓜 are prefect match.  2.  櫻花蝦炒飯: the texture of the rice is excellent.Other dishes such as 炸蠔仔酥, 乾炒牛河, 蠔仔大腸麵線, 炸滑豆腐, 腐乳炒通菜 suppose to be some simple and realtively easy dish.  However, seasoning, quality of raw materials, and minor handling affected the texture, taste, and presentation of the dish.  Beverage:  All three 奶茶 (珍珠, 仙草, regular) are below average quality.  Neither milk nor tea flavour.  Pearl and grass jelly are tasteless.  The final bill is about HK$1,000.  The overall food quality may be slightly below average. However, the dinning area and service are good. If you are not looking for real Taiwanese food but a comfortable dinning area and good service, and food price are not a big issue, this Night Market may be not a bad candidate to you.  It's not easy to find a Taiwanese restaurant with such comfortable dining areas in Hong Kong.  So, I wish this restaurant staying in Element but delivering better food quality to us. …Read More

Italian Tomato Café & Grill (灣景廣場)
2015-09-14
While I was working in Hong Kong, Italian Tomato is one of my favorite choice of cake shop in the town. After visiting my old client in Nina Tower, my colleague brought me to this AEON. According to my colleague, not only the Tsuen Wan AEON store moved to this location, but also the name of store (changing from "Jusco" to "AEON").Our arrival time was 2:50pm and the waiter reminded us that the menu will be changed from lunch to afternoon tea after 10 minutes (i.e., 3pm). Since my target is Japanese style cream cake, I don't mind waiting for another 10 minutes~Okay, here's what we ordered: Banana crepes with coffee, and Pistachio cream tart with iced coffee. Both the iced and hot coffee tastes great, strong and rich in flavour. My iced coffee is absolutely great for the hot late summer afternoon. Both the crepe and the cream tart look excellent. If you ask me to rank for the appearance, I will give 9 /10 points to them. However, I would consider that the taste and condition of them still have lot of rooms for improvement. For the pistachio cream tart: This tart is layered by (from top to bottom) puff-like top, pistachio cream (melting in porcess), custard, sponge cake (a bit dry), and tart base (too dry and hard in texture). It is suggested to adjust / control the temperature and moisture level. However, the control of sweetness is good. For the banana crepe: This crepe looks great and colorful. The cream is thick but soft and fluffy in texture. Banana is fresh and firm in texture. However, the crepe (skin) is dry and hard in texture. It make the over dish non-preferrable. It is suggested to adjust / control the moist level of the crepe (skin). Then, the dish will be almost perfect.…Read More

I love roasted goose
Sham Tseng Chan Kee Roasted Goose
2015-09-10
While I was working in Hong Kong, Yung Kee (in Central) is one of my favorite roasted goose restaurant in the town.  I love Yung Kee's soft & wet goose skin but I also love crispy goose skin (i.e., Chan Kee or Yu Kee).  So, my colleague arranged me to dine here after meeting the client in Tsuen Wan.  We ordered a roasted goose set for 2 which includes 2 bowls of "old-fire" soup, 1 dish of roasted goose (my colleague requested to upgrade it from 例牌 to lower part containing goose's leg at just HK$30 additional charge), and choice of two dish of 小菜 (we chose deep-fried pork chop and deep-fried fish's balls).  All three dishes are 熱氣 food~ (don't worry, we got a bottle of 清熱x later)  The roasted goose is VERY GOOD and I would rank it 9/10 points.  It's absolutely a great dinning experience if you can have hot, juicy, soft, and tender roasted goose.  And the goose meat is full of goose's juice and strong in goose's unique flavour.  The crispy goose skin made me forgetting the healthy dinning rules (laughing~)The pork chop is another excellent dish.  Again, the meat is juicy and tender.  The season of chilli salt gave a great flavour.  I don't see any 雪味 on those meat.  Although it looks dry on the surface, I can tell you that the inside of the pork chop is juicy and tender.  I would rank it 8/10 points.  The deep-fried fish balls with the clam sauce is another perfect dish during that dinning experience.  I would rank it 8/10 points.  All three dishes are great and I personally considered the HK$330 bill is reasonable.  The compliementary soup and rice are average items.  Does it worth to take an hour ride from the city to Sham Tseng for such a meal?  For those roasted goose fans, my personal answer is a "YES" because of the quality of roasted goose.  However, if you are not a hot fans of roasted goose, you can simply visit any Chan Kee in the city instead.  …Read More

As suggested by my junior collegaue, we went to this restaurant for dinner.  We three ordered 2 lobster set (2 for 1 special with choice of grilled steak) and a set dinner (main course as lamb racks).  The house wine (both white and red) is acceptable in terms of the food's price.  The lobster set came with two cups of bisque lobster and the lamb set came with the assorted mushroom soup (creamy base).  Both taste great, creamy, rich in flavour, and delicious.  However, the italian bread gave me a feeling of not-fresh-enough to serve on the dinning table.  The appetizers include 2 caesar salad with smoked salmon and a seafood gratin.  The salad was so fresh and the seafood is creamy and rich.  Both are excellent.  However, that piece of smoked salmon is a bit below-average quality food. The lobster sets came with 2 dishes of half-lobster and 6oz grilled steak.  As expected, the lobster is very small and containing too little lobster meat.  The quality of that steak is kind of just-acceptaable level.  Due to the relatively inexpensive price, we don't put a lot of expectation on the food quality.  However, the lamb rack gave me a big suprise~ The portion of mashed potato (not showing on the picture) is so rich and creamy while the grilled vegetable taste really good.  All three pieces of lamb racks are thick cut, tender, juicy, and rich in lamb's flavour.  I would consider this lamb dish is absolutely an above average dish~ Great deal.  Dessert is a piece of small mango mousse cakes for each of us.  The decoration on it off-set the small portion of the cake.  Finally, we finish the whole meal with a cup of rich but not very strong coffee.  The final bill was about HK$760.  In terms of its environment, friendly service, and acceptable quality of food, and comfortable dinning area, I consider this is a pleasant dinning experience in Maritime Square.…Read More

While I was working in Hong Kong, Italian Tomato is one of my favorite choice of cake shop in the town.  After visiting my old client in Nina Tower, my colleague brought me to this AEON.   According to my colleague, not only the Tsuen Wan AEON store moved to this location, but also the name of store (changing from "Jusco" to "AEON").  Our arrival time was 2:50pm and the waiter reminded us that the menu will be changed from lunch to afternoon tea after 10 minutes (i.e., 3pm). Then, the dish will be almost perfect.  …Read More

失落的日子之月餅殺手 I'm afraid this writing should be under Italian Tomato (the Tsuen Wan AEON store) instead of Gin Curry (in the same shopping centre). Please amend, thanks.
