A Culinary Low: PD Xiao Guan's Disappointing Show
Pu Dong Xiao Guan (Nathan Road)
2023-10-30
I recently had the opportunity to have a lunch at Pu Dong Xiao Guan (Nathan Road), a Shanghai cuisine restaurant that has been generating some buzz. However, my overall experience left me feeling disappointed and questioning the value of this establishment. From the exorbitant prices to the lackluster service and subpar hygiene, there were several aspects that fell short of my expectations. To begin with, I found the restaurant to be overpriced. The dishes did not justify the high costs, and I left feeling that I had not received good value for my money. Additionally, the staff's attitude was only average, and the presence of 10% service charge further added to my dissatisfaction. The lack of exceptional service compounded with the already high prices left me feeling underwhelmed. Moreover, the restaurant's hygiene left much to be desired. The floor was visibly covered in oil, which not only created an unpleasant environment but also raised concerns about cleanliness and food safety. Such poor hygiene practices are unacceptable and reflect poorly on the overall dining experience. On to the food itself, I ordered a variety of dishes, but none stood out as exceptional. The vegetable and meat dumpling noodles were just average in taste, failing to leave a lasting impression. The Pork Dandan Noodles with Spare Ribs was a complete disappointment. The pork lacked any discernible flavor, with no salt or curing evident. Despite reporting this issue to the staff, they did not respond or take any further action. Furthermore, the noodles were overly spicy, making it difficult to enjoy the dish. The Cold Noodles  with Sesame Sauce were also mediocre, lacking the desired flavors and textures that would elevate the dish. The only saving grace was the fresh meat soup dumplings, which were the only dish that met my expectations in terms of taste and quality. In conclusion, my experience at Pu Dong Xiao Guan (Nathan Road) was disappointing. The high prices, unsatisfactory service, and poor hygiene overshadowed the few redeeming qualities of the food. I cannot recommend this restaurant, especially considering the reported contract termination on 26/11/2023. Hong Kong diners can bid farewell to this subpar establishment and seek better dining options that offer superior quality, service, and hygiene.…Read More

A Culinary Plight: Taiwai Dining Room's Dim Light
Taiwai Dining Room
2023-10-06
I recently had the opportunity to dine at Taiwai Dining Room for a lunch, a restaurant that has garnered some attention in the area. However, my overall experience left much to be desired, prompting me to question the value of this establishment. From the lengthy wait time to the quality of service and food, there were numerous aspects that fell short of my expectations. To begin with, the waiting period was exceptionally long. I had to endure an almost hour-long wait just to secure a table, which is considerably longer than what one would anticipate, even for a popular restaurant. This extended wait time certainly didn't contribute positively to my dining experience.Once I was finally seated, I found the service staff's demeanor to be average at best. While they weren't outright rude, their service lacked the warmth and attentiveness that one would hope for in a restaurant of this caliber. It's worth mentioning that there were additional charges added to the bill, including a 10% service charge and a fee for tea. These unexpected charges only added to my disappointment, particularly considering the already high prices.Moving on to the food, I must admit that the quality did not match the steep prices. I started with a cup of tea, which was acceptable but didn't leave a lasting impression. The highlight of the meal was the Soup Dumplings, which were filled with flavorful broth and tender meat. However, the remaining dishes failed to make an impact. The Spicy Marrow Bones lacked the promised intensity and depth of flavor.  It left much to be desired. They were excessively oily, which not only made them unhealthy but also detracted from their taste. The overpowering oiliness masked any potential flavors, leaving the dish lacking in taste and enjoyment. It was a disappointing experience overall. The Sesame Rolls were rather ordinary, lacking the distinctive sesame taste that one would expect. The Barbecue Pork Buns were decent but failed to stand out from what you would find in other establishments. The Stir-fried Radish Cake with XO sauce lacked the desired texture and a well-balanced flavor profile. Finally, the Dry Steamed Beef was dry and lacked the tenderness that makes this dish enjoyable (forgot to take photo)Overall, I paid $529 for that. My experience at Taiwai Dining Room was underwhelming. The lengthy wait, average service, and high prices did not justify the quality of the food. While the Soup Dumplings were a standout, the remaining dishes failed to leave a lasting impression, ultimately leaving me disappointed. Considering the overall experience and the prices charged, I cannot recommend this restaurant as it does not offer good value for money. There are better dining options available in the area that provide superior quality and service at a more reasonable price point.P.s.:  Unfortunately, my experience at Taiwai Dining Room took an even more distressing turn. After finishing my meal, I suffered from diarrhea, which strongly indicates a hygiene issue within the restaurant. This unfortunate incident further emphasizes the urgent need for improvement in their hygiene practices.…Read More
