THE Best Vegan/Vegetarian Cafe
MUM Veggie Cafe
2018-07-19
Saved this place on OpenRice long time ago, but at that time I didn’t know where is Wong Chuk Hang and never would have thought that I would end up working there 😂😂 so Mum Veggie legitimately becomes my new canteen, and I feel infinitely blessed, this is a place that serves carefully crafted quality food filled with heart and soul. There are majorly six major types of dishes. Mushroom carrot rice with 3/4 items deli set, Kombu soy sauce soup udon with 2/3 items set, sesame sauce udon with 2/3 items set, quinoa avocado salad, veggie curry rice and pasta. Except the pasta I haven’t tried yet I’m confident to offer enough information for all the other set lunches (accompanied with soup).Mushroom carrot rice with 3/4 items deli setMy first try at this cafe and it left a strong impression on me. Everything in this tray is beautifully seasoned. You can sort of tell from how neat they are presented. Mushroom carrot rice is flavorful by itself, accompanied by ginger flavored eggplant, slightly spicy crunchy burdock root and carrot, sesame paste spinach and tofu skin with okra in soy milk, also very generous portion of vegetables in miso soup that comes with the set. There are many other sides you can choose from, over 10 choices in total. It’s just me being a vegan who has to choose these every time (especially spinach cause it’s really good for health).Kombu soy sauce soup udon with 2/3 deli setSee, still those same damn side dishes cause I just love them 😂😂. The Kombu soup is relatively light comparing to the miso soup but can still be considered flavorful. The fried tofu on top is extremely flavorful, sweet and a little sour. I usually have this set when my stomach is upset and I’ll drink that warm soup to the very last drop ❤️❤️.Sesame sauce cold udon with 2/3 deli setSometimes they have the baby king oyster mushroom in soy sauce and I was lucky enough to have it on that day. This set is extremely fit for hot summer days with super creamy sesame sauce and springy yet firm udon, it was a pleasure.Veggie curry riceAnother warm dish I have when my stomach is not feeling well is this curry. Curry style is Japanese as the cafe is Japanese theme, veggies r super crunchy or tender scrip. To be honest I usually always choose noodles when I dine out, Mum Veggie has made me fall in love with rice again I always finish the last grain of rice in my bowl/plate when I dine here ❤️❤️.Quinoa avocado saladBest salad I’ve had in a long while. Ingredients are super fresh as if they were just picked from the garden. So many ingredients from loads of leafy greens underneath to celery, broccoli, radish, quinoa, beetroot, sprouts, roasted pumpkin and root vegetables plus my favorite avocado flower. I was always attracted to warm cooked food but I will definitely have this salad more often now.Do you also have a favorite dining place near where you work/live? Leave comments let me know. Hope you enjoyed this review and also will enjoy Mum Veggie’s food the way I do ❤️❤️.…Read More

Experiencing Soul Food
Branto Indian Vegetarian Restaurant
2017-10-12
To be honest, I marked this restaurant months ago cause I saw from somewhere this is an vegetarian place, but at that time I wasn't a big fan of Indian food, but lately somehow I just fell completely in love.Authentic is the accurate word to describe the whole dining experience in here that's why many Indians come and you can actually learn how to enjoy Indian food by watching them (or peeking at them 😂). In case you wonder, the right way is using your hand and dipping or "mopping" the sauce on your tray. They also play Indian music here sometimes the waiter would sing softly with the music. Now let's talk about the food. First time visit I want to have the signature Thali, I mean, don't these look beautiful? There were in total 9 dressings, 7 came with the Thali set 2 came with the sides. I believe I spent almost 90mins enjoying every single bite. The spices were exactly what I was looking for, there were hot, creamy, sour, fragrant, buttery and of course the decadent curry with potato, tomato and zucchini. What's magical is the dressings taste better when you eat them with bread than alone, I guess they were designed and cooked for this purpose.Cause I couldn't stop thinking about coming back, I visited a second time (shortly after the first time) and wanted to try more. So as you can see I had two dippings which they call Punjabi dishes, the red one is spicy with corns, green one is relatively mild and made with peas, only wish I had more bread so I could finish these two. The bread is stuffed with curry potato called Mysore Masala Dosa, which I used for the spread but can also be eaten alone. There are food that you eat to live, and food you eat to die. There are food that nourish your soul, and food only linger a short while on your palate. Dining is a ritual that you perform three times a day, you should have a little bit attitude, and choose wisely. Indian food to me is soul food, I felt so touched and comforted after each meal, generally very happy and satisfied with the dining here.…Read More

You Can't Miss the Fries Here
ethos (山道)
2017-10-07
I probably should have done this one long time ago but it just didn't click on me although I used to live pretty much next door. Two things I miss about this old neighborhood, the hiking route to the peak and the huge Welcome market that has everything I need for my cooking. Maybe also this cafe since I had some nice memories here.I have tried both of their salads and definitely prefer this orange and beetroot salad, both the ingredients and dressing are spot on. I also had experience with their salmon risotto and chicken avocado fusilli back when I was still eating meat. Risotto is very creamy and rich in salmon flavor, fusilli is aromatic and they definitely managed to bring out the flavors of the tomatoes maybe with some herbs. But, the most impressive dish for me here is one of their appetizer, the French fries with 3 sauces, I mean, you cannot miss this dish if you visit!I came after my Saturday hike, and went decadent with these extremely satiate fries cause the thickness of the fries is the kind I like and I also couldn't get enough of the sauce! Ketchup is infused with spices such as black pepper, two mayonnaise, the yellow one is slightly more sour than the white one, both with herbs. I don't usually have fries, but if I do, I would absolutely choose these and not waste my quota on those fast food store ones 😂.I just devoured one of their dessert and now finishing off this review. First time trying their dessert, I chose matcha ice-cream crepe, beautiful plating as always, red bean sauce is warm and gooey, accompanied with milky ice cream, maybe too much carbs in a day but it was worth it 👍🏻.Extremely satisfied with this meal, was feeling rushing to the groceries and going home to prepare for tmr's picnic before the food was served but time passed by without me even noticing anything when I was enjoying, another piece of beautiful memory at here.…Read More

My Pre-holiday Treat for Myself
kikusan
2017-10-02
It was the Friday before October 1st long weekend. I woke up at 7am which is the case when I don't need to go to work (😂, yes when I do it's usually late). I had to pay a visit to immigration department to extend my working visa, so got half day off. I did my baby spinach smoothie topped with figs and had a beautiful start of my day. After all the procedures and a chill at Pacific Coffee, I came to here for my lunch. There wasn't much people here probably because it was only just noon. I'm used to sit at the bar table, tested the lighting, seemed good. The reason why I came to this Japanese shop is because I saw on Instagram they have few more choices for vegans than others. For those who don't know what vegans eat or don't eat, we choose to avoid meat, fish, dairy, egg and pretty much just everything that comes from animals. So, you might want to ask, what can a vegan eat at a Japanese? Here is a pic of all my choices:Tofu, which is essential for our protein, beautiful mango beet rolls and delicious veggie pot stickers. I was astonished by the presentation and pretty impressed by the flavors. Soy sauce for tofu salad was spot on, and there was my favorite avocado for some good fat. Pot stickers actually inspired me that I bought ingredients and made my first batch of potstickers this holiday. Mango beer rolls were refreshing, with sour sweet dipping sauce. I guess the sprinkle of tempura fries was meant to add some fatty taste to the dish but it was not necessary for me. When cooking with pure veggies, Asians always add extra oily stuff almost as if it's culture. But for healthy eaters like me, I get my oil majorly from nuts and seeds and of course as I said, avocados. A tea spoon of olive oil is about 60 kcal and lots of saturated fats. So when I cook, I choose to avoid as much oil as possible. Not updating or sending out reviews for quite some time now, hope you liked this one. There are a few more that I can write, about what I ate during the holiday, stay tuned if you want to know, bless up ❤️.…Read More

Healthy Is The New Black
Green Waffle Diner (希慎廣場)
2017-06-17
Birthday month, went out dining a few more times than usual and have a couple reviews to write on hands now. But when I went through all the pics, the ones shot at Green Waffle Diner really speak to me so I decided to do this review first.I have been here once by chance, was really tired and bored walking around and desperately needed to sit down for a tea break. To be honest, I am always a waffle person and I haven't even had a pancake so far in my life. I opened their menu, and was pleasantly surprised by various options offered in the DIY waffle section. My eyes immediately fell on the buckwheat gluten free waffle because, guys, if you know what gluten can do to your tummy and skin, you would try to avoid it at all cost just like me.I remember I ordered blueberry and mango jam to go with the waffle to keep the healthy theme going. Texture wise, one should never expect gluten free one to be soft and gooey like the one made of wheat, cause gluten is the protein in wheat and protein has the tender texture. So this buckwheat waffle is just plain but I know when I eat it that I'm not going to get bloated or have pimples because of this special treat. On my birthday, I ended up here waiting for my dinner reservation at another restaurant. For some reason I didn't see they actually have smoothies here for the first time, as a smoothie maker myself I definitely had to try, so I ordered this only vegan choice avocado and banana smoothie with fresh fruit and granola.Presentation is very satisfying like I cannot do it better, but there could be more work done with the flavors. I was tasting frozen bananas but lacking avocados and almond milk maybe because there was just a little bit of these two, and I definitely want more granolas. The big pros in here is they added chia seed which is one of the new super food and it's pretty rare to see it at restaurants cause it's kinda expensive.Overall, Green Waffle Diner has a delightful healthy theme and I wasn't disappointed at all. Definitely coming back for tea with friends!…Read More

I Am Impressed
CURRY HOUSE CoCo ICHIBANYA (Hysan Place)
2017-06-04
I was planning to have Chinese noodles or rice noodles at street shops but had to give up the idea cause the weather is steaming. I Need Good AirCon! And a better dining environment to relax. So I came to Hysan finding a place I have never been and then, I saw Coco Ichibanya.I have passed by the shop at Shun Tak Centre a couple times, checked out their menu and definitely wanted to try. Ultimately it is fast food curry but I don't mind since I grew up on Yoshinoya and still a fan, it all comes down to the quality of the ingredients, flavors and service. One of the reasons I said I am impressed is that they offer veggie curry, not just one type plus you can DIY. I chose tofu with okra curry and mushroom as topping, all my favorites in one plate. And here it is.Presentation wise it is really pretty, very Japanese style homy curry cute and kawai. Tofu is excellent, undoubtedly flavorful and veggies are crunchy and fresh. Now, I don't mean they use fresh ingredients to cook this meal cause that's highly unlikely, but probably good frozen ones and frozen veggies are just as nutritious as fresh ones (scientifically based).A glass of water is served in here and they offer wet wipes on the table which is really considerate. It doesn't cost a lot of money but even more expensive restaurants don't have them. Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with my dining experience in here, for sure coming back to grab a quick meal, it is really comforting, thumbs up. 👍🏻 …Read More

My First Biang Biang Noodle
Yau Yuen Siu Tsui
2017-05-30
This review is fresh and hot like just off the pan cause I just dined there. I'm very excited that I finally tried the noodle I've been obsessed with, although there is both pros and cons, I just cannot wait to share with you guys.Shop is close to MTR like what Openrice says a couple minutes' walk. It is not obvious on the street and not very spacious but, it seems like a lot of people who don't live nearby come to try their food and there was line waiting to pick up the takeouts.I found a place to sit down and couldn't wait to check out their menu. First impression, I'm definitely coming back cause I'm not able to try everything I want a single time and they look and sound so yummy. I ordered a cold yuba dish, biang biang noodle and a plum drink.Service was very fast I barely waited for anything and first came my drink. I was a bit disappointed at first sight cause my plum drink was not fresh made by the store but was a can. I looked around and other customers' drinks were all in cans (no matter what the drink was) so I guess this shop don't make drinks themselves. I carefully checked the ingredients made sure it is not soft drink so I opened it. After first sip I felt so lucky I didn't turn it back cause it is very flavorful, I wonder if I can buy it somewhere else.Quickly followed my drink was the cold dish. The flavors remind me of grandma's cooking which I grew up on, almost exact the same with Chinese herbs and spices. Celery was crunchy and fresh, yuba/tofu skin was tender and chewy. Now the most important thing and the reason why I was there, the biang biang noodle. I was trying to keep the vegetarian thing going so I ordered solely the noodle but it seemed like chefs who always season everything with meat don't know how to season a dish with only vegetables, felt like they should schedule some time with me for consulting 😂✌🏻. The noodle barely had any taste, not even a bit of salt, just oily. So I had to use the chilis and black vinegar on the table to give it some flavors thinking next time I'm definitely having the one that comes with ribs. Texture of the noodle was on point, smooth, silky and tender. Portion was just right for me cause I didn't wanna get stuffed. The lighting was really smart that's why my food look great on these pics, but there was no wifi on my seat but it seemed fine for other people. Overall a decent dining experience and yes I've already said I'm definitely coming back. Below are part of their menu for your interest.…Read More

As a healthy food home maker, I've always been interested in raw fruits and veggies combinations such as cold pressed juice and smoothies and I make them myself. So when I found this place and discovered their juice collection I was extremely impressed and instantly hooked.I've been here twice. First time only tried a milky juice with cashew, almond, cinnamon and sea salt and it wasn't bad, fresh of course.Today I decided to spend a bit more time in here and do a nice little review so I tried another juice with some light food.I was really going for healthy choice so I picked a juice with ginger in it and yes, it is a little spicy. But the beet root and water melon nicely balanced it out, not to mention there's flaxseed oil giving you the good omega 3 fatty acids.About the wrap, to be honest I really was planning to have something like Korean or Chinese with spice and soy sauce but when I saw this wrap I just couldn't miss it. I attached the ingredients below and they are 100% healthy plant based and flavors are not bad either.Hands down, this is the healthiest place I found in soho where everybody just come for booze, burger, steak and fries. It's nice for a change sometimes so next time you want something delightful and detoxing, here is a good choice.…Read More

Shanghai Min (Man Yee Bldg)

As a sucker for Shanghaiese food, it's only a matter of time that I come dining here. Nobody recommended, I just found it myself and I missed a detail on Openrice that this place is good for group dining, no wonder the reception sounded a bit weird when I said I wanted to book a table for one person.Because it's for group dining, tables are all round in here. And the whole place is separated in several small rooms each with a waiter which makes service very efficient cause the moment you raise your hand, she can see you immediately. The overall feeling is very mainland style dining plus the music they play just reminds me of home. I quickly ordered a few of my favorite Shanghaiese signature dishes plus a tea pot and was ready to relax and enjoy. What surprised me was their serving which was very fast, probably within 20 mins all three of my orders were served, so this is a plus.I began my dinner with a cold dish with black fungus and okra, black vinegar sauce and was a little disappointed cause there wasn't much flavor in it, black fungus and okras were fresh though. Then came my soup which is my all time favorite sour spicy soup and they customized it with sea cucumber and obviously there could be only a few small pieces of it but as I grew up in a city that is very famous for sea cucumber, I can say there's definitely flavors of it in the soup.Last is my main dish and consistent with the previous two, presentation wise, this stewed noodle doesn't look really appealing. I was afraid it could be hot so I let it set for a little while and later when I was about to have it, there was a gluey skin on the surface of the soup which means they use REAL chicken broth (at least some) and not pure chemical powders, and this is a big plus, also the veggies in it are fresh and crunchy. Flavor of the noodle is very mild and soothing just like a bowl of decent chicken soup that warms your stomach, noodles are easily separated and not congealed together, I am satisfied.Overall, it was a decent dinner experience. I don't know whether I would come back but food here use real ingredients and probably very few chemical compounds. Maybe it's a good choice to bring my mainland visitors here ❤️.…Read More

This would be the first review I wrote without any pics, cause I was dining with a friend and didn't want her to stress about the fact that I take long time to position things and shoot them. Luckily there are already a lot of pics, hopefully they are consistent with what I say here.I booked a table one day before cause they seem to have a a high openrice score. Actually when we were here all through our dining there wasn't much people, or maybe we were too early and they open till very late. It's actually a buffet and you get to pick whether you will have fish hotpot or chicken hotpot, accompanied with an assorted meat plate and a seafood plate. Then you get to select other things you want to add to your hotpot. Plus drinks all free included in you buffet offer. We had a Vietnamese lime flavored fish hotpot and my friend is a carnivore who finished all the meat and seafood. I ordered three times veggies and the choices are abundant, each time they didn't serve too much like three pieces of each of my order but I think it's good not to waste anything. The fish hotpot was seasoned well, not oily or spicy at least this one, but there are other two spicy choices which I don't know about. My friend was very impressed by the meal while me was kind of ok cause I was comparing this fish hotpot with all the ones I had in the past not just in HK, flavor wise, ingredients wise and value for money wise, so I'd give an ok for the whole experience, doubt I'd come back. Service was very efficient and friendly though ❤️.…Read More

Modern Vietnamese
Brass Spoon
2017-04-29
I was just feeling Vietnamese for an afternoon tea or more precisely pho so I searched a couple restaurants and ended up here. To be honest what exactly I was looking for is veggie pho in veggie broth but didn't manage to find one, it seems the classic raw beef pho is the popular theme generally in HK, but at least this place serves solely professional Vietnamese food and not mixing up Thai and Indian like other restaurants which confuses me.I forgot to keep a shot of the menu which is well designed and you can actually choose what kind of pho you want, which sides to add and some snack and drink choices.Since I'm not impressed by meat generally at all so I chose the cooked beef pho, what was disappointing was I specifically asked for more onions and spring onions but when the pho was served it just doesn't seem there was any extra of those on it.The presentation of the dish is very clean, which is also the biggest impression of this place to me with its modern internal design and beautiful lighting which gives the food the right color. The beef has some fat in between and is really tender, broth is flavorful but the portion, I don't know about other people but for me is definitely not enough for a formal meal, a tea is just fine. They didn't charge service fee if I remembered right, so 82 HKD for the pho which I guess is acceptable in central. Wish they serve veggie pho here in the future so I would come back a lot more.…Read More

I mean, WOW!!!
TamJai SamGor Hennessy Road)

The moment my dish is served, I realized why last time after having rice noodles at another shop I literally had nothing to say. I mean, there wasn't much to brag about the whole experience or a regular bowl of rice noodles so I just uploaded the pic. But this time, really wow!The biggest impact is obviously the generous portion. Each ingredient I added has been given a big dose, filling up the bowl and very satisfying. After the first bite of my leek, I was surprised at the freshness of it. Old leek can be very chewy but these taste like the ones I bought from the wet market for myself. They have 5 types of soup base to choose and I tried something that is new to me, a smoky spicy flavor with the amateur level of spiciness and it is quite unique. After I finished my meal, as I was just chilling, I checked out their menu more carefully, here I also attach them since there seems to be loads of choices and they aren't bad at all! Perfect Sunday dinner, definitely coming back!…Read More

Cool for Coffee Lovers
HABITŪ caffè
2017-04-02
Intended to find a new place to chill somewhere around Wan Chai and ended up here. I usually openrice before I go to places just to don't get disappointed and give an ok review. So, guess this is the first 👌🏻 They have many choices for drinks, coffee majorly, also serve different kinds of tea and hot chocolate, don't have my favorite matcha latte, probably because they are an Italian cafe. I saw on the menu there is daily soup, so I had this Caldo Verde Kale soup and I really was expecting kale but there was just a little piece of it.I also had some brownies, and there was not much chocolate flavors, although texture was quite smooth and gooey.I should have taken one of these cookies as they come in different complexed flavors and the colors remind me of those ones I once had as birthday presents that have salty bacon and truffle flavors, probably is worth a try.Overall a little disappointed but unsurprised.…Read More

PARADISE DYNASTY (Lee Theatre Plaza)
2017-04-02
I personally have pretty good impressions of most dining places at Lee Theatre, Paradise Dynasty belongs to one of those, with excellent flavorful dishes and consistent service, seriously, I have never had an experience here that was embarrassing.20 minutes after I placed my order, a manager checked my items and quickly came back with a dish. I usually have warm veggies for dinner but since this lettuce wrap is highly recommended so I decided to give it a try and was totally blown away by the freshness and crunchiness as well as the unbelievable sesame sauce. One thing that I don't want to miss whenever I'm at a Shanghaiese restaurant is the sour spicy noodle. This reserved item on my all time favorite list here is always properly cooked and served in time so noodles are still easily separable and not congealed. The other time when I was here I tried their signature Shanghaiese steamed veggie buns and soy sauce okras. Flavor wise there are no words but also presentation wise is a feast for the eyes.Glad I made the decision to come back, adding some enjoyable new memories in here.…Read More

Was walking from Sai Ying Pun to Central after my soy matcha latte and found this cute place's genuine offer.$60 for standard sandwich with 1 main and 2 sides. $65 for standard salad with 1 main and 2 sides. I had this set veggie salad with roasted pumpkin, bell peppers and lettuce with pesto sauce, ingredients are fresh, just with there's a bit more salt or seasoning. $65 well worth and much better than $50+ salad I get from Pret A Manger.Kind of surprised and definitely coming back.…Read More
