Came here for early Sunday dinner and we had made a reservation so when we arrived we were seated immediately without waiting. We were offered the food and drinks menu and immediately noticed some special items we wanted to try. The hot tea they serve has a hint of peach, and we ordered the draft beer and beer with iced white peach top. The plated sushi assortment looks appealing and the taste is fresh and the texture of the rich is better than most.We ordered some assorted yakitori, a little expensive for the portion size but the chicken skin on prawn deserves a mention and is recommended. We also especially loved the pork with soft cartilage udon in thick soup. Although the place got a lot busier and all the private rooms had also been filled there was still enough staff to serve us efficiently. We would definitely recommend this place and return shortly. By the way, we paid for our own meal without any special benefits, that’s for OR’s record.…Read More

Big Bean Selection
John Choy Cafe. 2015
2023-06-14
Took a casual day off work to take my dog to the vets, found this place to get a cup of coffee. They have a very wide selection of beans to choose from so I suggest take a long look if necessary before going to the service counter, you don’t want to hold up the queue during peak hours, right? The food selection is more snacks to go with the coffee and not a wide variety but you can pick and choose from noodles or toasted sandwich (recommended).I ordered an Apito Caramel coffee, it was rich and smooth but not what I am normally accustomed, next time I plan to go for something a little stronger from the other 39 beans I could have chosen. For the decor it is surprisingly big on the inside, it has outdoor seating on both sides of the corner of the shop and also a little pet (tortoise) garden. For drivers there is a meter parking at the start of the road but there is also street parking if you want to risk it. The seating inside has a monitor for cameras filming the street to keep an eye on your vehicle. The owner and even some of the regulars are friendly and we chatted with them. I believe this place may have got some poor reviews in the past based on some misunderstandings. If you want a place to chill this can be it, but not during peak hours! You may have time but others may not….…Read More

Happy Anniversary !
Wish-ao by Aobana
2023-06-12
We went to celebrate our wedding anniversary and was able to get a booking here via openrice for 8pm. We arrived a little early but was able to get a table immediately without having to wait. We noticed the decor is bright, spacious, comfortable and welcoming. The menu is interesting and easy to navigate, helping to make a choice between small groups to sharing with larger parties. We ordered The Snacks platter, Char-Grilled Octopus Leg salad, Grilled Spanish suckling pig and Cheese Bolognese fries. We ordered a couple of cocktails and they arrived first. The First night and 一夜七次郎 (roughly translated meaning “7 times a night). They both looked pretty but the former although refreshing maybe needed something a little stronger mixed with it. The latter we should have ordered with less sugar for next time. The staff are very friendly and helpful and introduced the dishes brought to the table which is a nice touch! The food arrived in order with starters and snacks first followed by the main. The Octopus was tasty, not too chewy and clearly chat-grilled, portion is good for 2 people or sharing. The snack platter had some changes that we were not aware beforehand. It should have been deep fried Camembert (changed to deep fried squid), onion rings, cuttlefish wontons (changed to fried seaweed shrimp roll) and taro corn meatballs. Maybe they need to include in bracket “subject to change due to unavailability, and to check with server”. This would avoid any unnecessary dispute. The Cheese and Bolognese fries changed to wedges (we were informed in advance), it was meaty and cheesy but the wedges were obviously made from fresh potatoes and those need extra time and should be fried twice with the right temperature to avoid it being soggy or undercooked. The highlight was the suckling pig, it was really perfectly cooked, crispy skin and the meat was tender and perfectly seasoned! We can definitely recommend it. We were full and was not able to try any of the desserts, but they do look interesting and special so we should leave some room next time!…Read More

Must try the duck pancakes
Dab-Pa (New Town Plaza Phase I)
2021-06-03
Went to this restaurant last week for a birthday celebration, we had booked in advance and was seated immediately. The staff and polite and friendly. We ordered the sauerkraut fish set that included a starter (garlic pork belly rolls), sauerkraut fish, Vegetable dish, Shanghai dumplings (thin wrapper and juicy filling) and a dessert. In addition we ordered a portion of duck pancakes and so glad we did, the duck skin is crispy and does not feel oily and the pancakes are thin but strong enough to wrap the duck, veg and condiments easily. The whole experience overall was happy and memorable, and we’ll definitely be back soon.…Read More

Better than some places in Japan

Discovered a new Japanese restaurant open today where there once was a cart noodle shop. The decor is modern, bright and uncluttered with seating for about 16 people. As there were seating restrictions enforced by the government because of the covid the food we could order was limited as there was only the 2 of us, but there was so much choice from the menu it was difficult to choose. We ordered a peach nectar and black Suntory Malt to start with and an assortment of skewers (chicken liver, chicken breast cartilage, chicken gizzard, chicken skin and eel). We then followed with pork ramen (noodles was al dente and pork had been marinaded and seared for extra flavour), whole roasted squid and chicken hotpot set. The food arrived promptly still piping hot, and we definitely ordered too much as the portions are generous and too much to finish. The staff are courteous, friendly and attentive keeping our glasses filled with tea and chatted with us. I can honestly say this is so far one of the best Japanese restaurants I have been in Hong Kong, and I can also say even better than some in Japan! I will definitely be back for more!…Read More

Unexpected Vietnamese Treasure
Gingko House - Viet Street
2018-11-16
Was out with family on holiday and in the MK area wanted to find something to eat near Temple street market. This place is a little hidden from the high street and entrance is through an old building and not much to look at. We were first pleasantly surprised by the roominess and decor of the interior of the restaurant, the style is somewhat like a lounge and canteen/diner style. On the shelves by the side of the wall are hand made food products like sauces and condiments. we did not have a reservation (better to book) but it was 7pm and there was a free table that was booked for 8pm. The restaurant is spacious and plenty of room for the highchair for the baby. We immediately noticed how attentive and helpful the staff were, our baby was offered kids bowl and cutlery and the waiter was very helpful on the menu with suggestions on the food and drinks. we ordered the mixed starter platter (selection of spring rolls, papaya salad), Banh mi (sandwich made with baguette), rice paper pouch, Vietnamese rice paper rolls and curry beef brisket with rice and a Vietnamese beer (333) and shrimp balls (special priced snack from a selection that is available with a drinks order) that was on happy hour (buy one get one free). The only issue we had was the beef was really tough and should have been slowly cooked for longer which would have made it more tender, but apart from that everything was overall a delightful experience that compelled me to write this review. Thanks to the waiter who really made the dinner special!…Read More

The Lounge & Bar

One of our friends had made a reservation and we were attended to and shown to our seats promptly. The service was efficient and friendly and the staff are very knowledgeable about the menu, and attentive to our needs without asking. The first things you notice are the decor, but also that most of the seats are taken up at the window and that everyone sits facing out. No wonder as the view is just amazing, a real birds eye view of Hong Kong island and Victoria harbour from 102 floors up. Although the place was full the ambience was unspoilt and quiet enough to chat with little effort. We looked through the set and al-la-carte menus and decided to order 2 tea sets (a 3 tier tower of scones, cakes and savoury delicacies), and prawn cake, Carbonara (rich and creamy) and a side of fries (hot and crispy). The presentation of all the food was as you would expect from the Ritz Carlton and the amount of food was enough for 5 persons as a light lunch / afternoon tea. It is definitely worth visiting and we will be back for the next special occasion. …Read More

New Cafe on the block
Cafe Yuanyang (New Commerce Centre)

A new place opened,I remember the original logo was green and possibly looked too much like a famous american coffee house we all know so now it is red. The environment is clean and comfortable with various types of seating from normal chairs, to sofas and bar stools. The walls around the sides of the cafe have multiple USB sockets where you can charge your phone while eating. The lighting I would say is dimmer and more comfortable than other places around this area. After eating you clean up after yourself by putting the tray into the available rack. I went there for a late lunch there today with 3 of my colleagues. As we arrived it was just coming up to 2.30pm but as we are looking through the lunch menu on the large LED displays on the wall, they switched to the tea time menu. I ordered a baked pork chop with rice and hot tea with milk. I was asked by the cashier to pay $52. I checked and the tea menu said $42.She explained to me that was the tea time menu and I was paying full price for the lunch. I looked at my watch which was sure enough 2.28pm. I had already paid and so there was nothing I could do now except write an article on openrice. However, in future this could be prevented many ways. Firstly, don't put identical food items on the lunch and tea menu, or only put up the tea menu when it is time to switch to that menu and not before. It is no use to put a menu up when the food is not available at the price specified. They could also train their staff better to alert or remind the customer if it is a lunch or tea menu are borderline times. If I was told this I would for sure have waited the extra 2 minutes to save $10!On to the food, to be fair the portion is OK, and the presentation is also good, but the sauce was not tangy enough, the rice was overcooked. The tea tasted more like English tea than HK style. For this place to compete with tastier and better value places around the area that are already well established and have a loyal following will be the greatest challenge for this place! …Read More

we had previously been here for dinner so we thought we would give the dim sum a try. It is freshly made and piping hot when it arrives at the table. We could tell the ingredients are of good quality and fresh not only by the taste, but also from the presentation. The place is decorated with art and the staff are well trained, well mannered and knowledgeable of the menu items. Some further tips are: make a reservationsome dishes come in 3-4pcs, but they allow ordering per piece if you don't want to order double portions. It does not have free parking, even though D2 place has one hour free for spending of over $200 on a single receipt. …Read More

Jack of all trades
Eight Ladle Restaurant

Place I normally go was full so thought I would try this place. The name on the wall made it sound foriegn (Åtte Øser?) it was raining and it had seating available and many items on the menu so I felt spoilt for choice. I ordered curry brisket beef with rice and an iced tea with milk. I could honestly say I can't remember ever waiting over half an hour for such a "standard" food item! When it did arrive it was a mix of brisket with tendon, I normally love this but the tendon was a mix of parts that had been cooked long enough to make it tender versus parts that were too tough to chew through. The curry sauce was bland and the beef had small pieces of potato and large pieces of ginger to keep it company. The tea with milk was watered down beyond recognition. I suspect this place is more about appearance, presentation and marketing, or maybe I should have stuck to the congee as the name of the restaurant suggest, Hong Kong style cafe was only an afterthought. I could say I could easily find much better for less money, and arriving to my table in half the time.…Read More

Sunday Brekky with Chalky
Little Break Coffee & Kitchen
2014-02-02
Breakfast is served on Saturday and Sunday from 8.30am, we had a dog with us so we sat outside. We both ordered the full English breakfast that included scrambled eggs with truffle, bacon, sausage, gammon ham, fresh sauted mushrooms, green salad, smoked salmon, baked beans, and a slice of fried tomato with pesto. It came with a choice of croissant, danish toast or bagel. We chose the bagel with cream cheese. We ordered a lemon tea and coffee to drink. The quantity was sufficient and the quality was perfect, I can say they take pride in their cooking and presentation and in the selected ingredients. The staff are courteous and friendly. I will definitely become one of their regulars!…Read More

Chalky's Birthday
SUS Pet Cafe

Although it is located out in the countryside we had no trouble finding the place as the signage is adequate and located immediately next to Tai Lam tunnel in Pat Heung. The place had adequate outdoor parking just outside the entrance and it's free We had only been there once before but within the last month they have added an outdoor pool and various interesting decorations around the place. Before coming we had to check in case they are fully booked with private functions, which during the weekends it normally is. It was just a regular weekday so fortunately it was not too busy and so we were not rushing to have our dinner. Instead we spent quite a bit of time exploring the place, as it now has several more partitioned areas outdoors, equipped for BBQ and a small grassy area for dogs to play, and of course, a new pool. There were 3 main indoor areas (2 private function rooms & a bar). All the indoor areas are equipped with split type air conditioning (and even the toilet). Our party ordered 2 steaks, one fish and a BBQ platter, this came as a set including freshly baked bread, potato salad, clam and mushroom chowder, drinks and finishing with creme brulee. It was our dog's birthday and the owners had prepared a hand made pumpkin tart especially for the occasion. The service was attentive without being overwhelming, this may vary depending on how busy they are.We were really pleased with the spacious environment and the kind and gracious hosts, and finally a place to take pets where they are welcome and well looked after just as much as we are.We will definitely come back!…Read More

Pleasant surprise at the corner of i-square
Duke's Deli
2012-02-23
We had just arrived in TST when feeling a little peckish and it was late afternoon around 5pm and several hours away from dinner so my wife and I decided to get something to eat in i-square. We stumbled into this diner at the corner of 3/F and was pleased we did. We picked one set from the combo menu (Meatball hero) for $58 and beer battered fish and chips for $76 and to wash it all down we had an apple cider for $27 (Happy hour) that normally would cost us $40. The food arrived quickly, hot and the portions were larger than expected. The environment is spacious while cosy and many small tables for couples, at the time we went it would seem quiet for a Saturday. I guess the staff cater for mainly foreigners as none of the staff we saw were Chinese and they all spoke English to us. In my opinion they were not too attentative to the customers requesting service even though it was not that busy. Also, need to note that the combo are better value than single items off the menu. For example, I was going to get a half meat ball hero sandwich that did not come with anything for $63, but in the end I found the combo only cost $58 but came with side orders of fries, coleslaw and canned drink!…Read More
