Good coffee, quick service and chill place
George Coffee (灣景中心大廈)
2018-03-26
Chill place, convenient, quick and much better coffee than burnt coffee and long queue from Starbucks.Had a flat white. My friend and I felt that the milk overpowered the taste of the coffee, but we are not big drinkers of flat white so perhaps our assessment is not fair.  After finishing the cup, I smelt the coffee in the cup and it was quite pleasant. Also, much better than Starbucks in any case. Perhaps I'll order a cappucino next time.Price is also competitive, 34 per cup …Read More

Best almond milk coffee; cocktails coming
Interval Coffee Bar
2018-03-21
The almond milk they use for their coffee is great for steaming and makes for a nutty, creamy coffee. Strongly recommended.Coffee is nutty and smooth.Staff is polite and vibe is posh. It is not very busy yet in the morning, you Starbucks/PCC people might want to check this place out! At night they are a bar and I heard they have a cocktail menu coming/ready, with fun drinks and perhaps also the Irish Coffee.…Read More

Awtar
2016-03-19
Hands down my fav place in Soho, for a picky person like yours sincerely. they honestly are good at all you want to ask - creative and amazing cocktails, authentic and simply delicious food, shisha is smoother than most places and reasonably priced, very comfortable seats, and hey the bartenders are polite especially two nice guys, whom i think are the managers. They are so attentive and professional I kept bringing friends back and not one was disappointed.Into the details: shisha they use a small one but it is so smooth and there is so much smoke. Mint, lemon mint, or cappuccino are their best flavours (Ive tried them all). Coconut coal. Cheaper than another good shisha place around yet ten times more comfy and staff are more polite.Food is authentic Lebanese and especially they have VERY good hummus (coming from a picky eater on Middle Eastern food), and Watermelon Halloumi salad is the best starter imo. Falafels were moist on the inside and tasted fresh, it is so hard to find good falafels in HK!! Best I have had were here at Awtar.Cocktails.... they have such a range of fun cocktails to try, I loved every one i tried, esp the rasberry one, mango one and an almond one.Seats are incredibly comfortable. on weekdays you would have little to no problem bringing a medium sized group in while staying cozy on their couches!Music is also good if you're looking for a balance between club music and quietness so that friends can talk over the meal I'll just keep coming back whatever Im feeling like, shisha, drinks or food! …Read More

Food is too average for Jamie's brand name
Jamie's Italian
2015-10-20
Had lunch there and it was very noisy and crowded, service was tight and there were two salt bottles on my table and no pepper grinder. i had to take one from the other table. The menu consisted of a good variety of Italian dishes with some creative twists, especially for the appetisers. I ordered Arancini, ie risotto balls fried. It was crispy outside, and very tasty with an interesting texture inside of funghi risotto. Definitely freshly prepared.Unfortunately, the ribeye steak and brownies are really, really not so good. I couldn't believe it when the steak came with minimal seasoning. It tasted like only two grains of salt and pepper were added! That prevented the taste of the beef itself from coming out. The steak was rather thin and not juicy! That made for a failure in texture as well as taste. There was also a mushroom sauce that came with it, yet it also disappointed because it would never compensate for the unseasoned beef.Brownies came with vanilla icecream. The brownies were of a boring texture, not anything chewy (i.e. no contrast in texture), plainly a dryish cake like. The taste of cocoa was also very basic and not fragrant. It was supposed to be one of the best desserts... I am a home cook and looked up to Jamie's recipes and I cook my steaks and desserts well, so this is quite disappointing compared to the high standards of his recipes. For service, I must point out that the receptionists were much more aloof and think they are cool (ie arrogant) compared to the very warm service I received in the very well managed Jamie's Italian in Bali, Indonesia. what a shame, maybe they think they are big bugs if they work at a big restaurant?Overall, no wow factor in the food except that they got the doneness right, very noisy, so so service and bad reception. Once was enough.…Read More

Delicious biryani! Nepalese-authentic!
Fusion Food
2015-07-09
Firstly, I have to recommend this shop for midnight munches. If you are hungry in the middle of the night and most restaurants around are closed... just go to this one!I have eaten their chicken biryani twice. First time when a guy cooked it at night, second time when a lady cooked it around noon. The guys take the night to midnight shift. I much preferred the guys' cooking - the lady was friendly but she put only one tiny piece of meat into my biryani and the taste of spices was not that balanced. The guy put the right amount for the approximately 50-60 hkd biryani. His cooking was brilliant and authentic.  Spices were very well adjusted, with a strong taste of cardamom - not to forget the ever so authentic experience of biting into cardamom seeds! That's what's supposed to happen when you have an great biryani ;D the century-old issue of the biryani! Their momos are something that my friends liked a lot. They are like a drier version of the Chinese Shanghainese "little steamer dumplings" (xiao long bao). For me, the dough wrapping was on the thick side which is not my preference; nevertheless, they have their fans.Other food selections include salads and kebabs etc. For drinks... they don't have lassis (OooOOooooNoooo). Mainly soft drinks. The staff there are nice people. I strongly propose that you try this shop. Good for both eating there at bar tables or taking away. I'm coming back for the goood olllld birrryannniiiii! Will be back only at night! …Read More

Italian perfection... Heavenly
Mangiare
2015-05-17
Made a reservation for this relatively new restaurant which is usually packed due to its small size. It only opens for dinner. The food is disproportionately amazing despite the small size of this street food concept place. The Italian chef here is Luca Piazza - a chef whose cooking I absolutely adore. The cheesy appetiser which I have forgotten the name for tasted so heavenly, it had so gravy on top of the smoked cheese covering the appetizer. There was some artichokes in the appetiser which gave special flavour to the whole dish on top of the cheesy heavenliness. The lobster pasta was my all time favourite. The gravy lingering in the dish was so well-infused with lobster flavour, while the lobster itself was so fresh and tasted incredibly fragrant. The spicy scallops spaghetti  was also unforgettable, it is only slightly spicy, with the scallops being extremely fresh and its flavour also adequately present in the gravy. As for the rigatoni, the meat was tuna with other ingredients combined. The cheese is a different kind from the appetiser. You can always trust the Italian chef on his choice of cheese. I loved the other pastas more but that's only because I'm not so much of a penne/rigatoni person. The meat was actually extremely well made, with a right balance of complexity of flavours. They have other dishes like sirloin and platters. On the side, you can order sparkling water or other drinks, and also ciabatta. Honestly though, Luca's food is so good that I don't pay much attention to what's on the side anymore One thing though, their menu is written in Italiano and for those who only parla inglese... you'll have to listen intently to the explanation of the waiter/waitress ;)…Read More

Jack’s Fried Chicken
2015-04-09
If you only remember one thing from this review - it should be: "fingerlickin' good" - for real. Try it.JFC has great fried chicken for value which comes with addictive fries and a soft drink (diet coke is available, while the owner encourages the consumption of regular coke). Scroll all the way down for photos. The chicken was very well-marinated in their blend of sauces, making the flesh way more exciting than your regular chicken and balancing off any oil. The breast was tender and moist. There are a few meal sets to choose from, including boneless chicken thighs and chicken burger etc. Portions are very decent, esp as the restaurant is American ;)The potato fries were made slimmer than the sweet potato fries. All three were tasty and well fried. The photo of all fries below shows sweet potato fries (left), chilly fries (middle - not for the faint of tastebuds but definitely awesome) and "regular" fries in a special fragrantly salty flavour (right, tasted like the local brand of 熱浪 potato chips). As I prefer less salty stuff, the sweet potato fries were the best for me - but the others are definitely great as well. The service is good and flexible. Feedback was asked from new customers, and many returning customers appeared. For location, JFC is a great place for grab/eat-and-go and is 3 mins' walk from the Kennedy Town Station and right next to a tram station. It has a bar table outside the restaurant enough to fit three men. Equally perfect location for visitors of kennedy town and nearby residents - there are benches by the seaside which seem to make the desired spot for taking away some chicken to...Am secretly hoping this is indeed the first review, having exclaimed "FIRST". …Read More

revisit for the cakes!
Seoulmate Cafe
2015-03-14
I wrote a review on Seoulmate down the page, but am writing another one to talk about the cakes and beverages.1) Omija cha was changed from its good old one to one made from extract. The old one was much more appealing because of the texture of crushed omija. Extract is too refined and does not make the drink as interesting or flavourful.2) Berries tea is awesome - made from korean berries and we all know how fabulous korean berries are! As shown in the picture below.3) Their cakes: I had a molten chocolate cake with berry jam, a green tea swiss roll and a korean pomelo cheesecake. a) Chocolate cake was good but not a big surprise. However, if you are in the mood for chocs, that would suit you.b) Green tea swiss roll is worth a go. The cream inside was interesting as it was made from cream and different types of grains, thus tasted like wheaty-milky.c) Many of my friends and I all like the cheesecake! The combo of pomelo and cheese was a win indeed. My only complaint is it is small in size. …Read More

It's a rather empty cafe at 5.40 pm and I was in search for an early light dinner. This cafe's atmosphere occurred to me to be crisp and clean, almost a little too cool but for the interesting menu and soft music. I decided to go in upon knowing that they have wifi access and salads with appealing ingredients such as salmon, pumpkin, sherry vinegar, beetroot, feta cheese... Other options include panino, mains, and desserts with simple but elegant looks (panna cotta etc). They have coffees and teas alike.I ordered the beetroot, orange and feta cheese salad, with nuts splattered around and vinegar dressing. It was, just like the cafe itself, simplistic yet appealing. I like the combo of ingredients which makes it refreshing. My only complaint is that the oranges are in large cuts so I find it a challenge to eat a combo of ingredients in one go, with my small asian mouth.... oh well xDOh. And it's not that cheap - around 80 to 90 for each salad. They have tap water on request - which they refill voluntarily  I might come again. They have potential to improve the value for money and I hope they will!Critique:- Good interrior design and reasonably spacious.- Simplistic yet elegant spread of food.- Reasonable service- Eating utensils are of rather high quality- Could improve how they cut up ingredients on the salad to allow the ingredients the blend better- Not very filling…Read More

Delightful as... Turkish Delight! Authentic
Istanbul Express Turkuaz Turkish Restaurant (New Mandarin Plaza)
2015-01-31
I am planning my trip to Istanbul (despite relatives' objection it really does not sound dangerous! there's a higher likelihood of me getting hit by a car in HK ;) )Before going to Istanbul I am certain I have fallen in love with it from watching Youtube videos about the culture ... and FOOD. istanbul Express has become one of the reasons.Hint: the best part of my meal = what came last. This is my first relatively "direct" taste of Turkish culture. Istanbul Express is orientally decorated, with lots of gorgeous turkish lamps and plates hanging around. The utensils as can be seen in the first photo are beautiful metal pots and cup. Everything points to Istanbul. But what completes the authentic atmosphere has to be the Turkish people. There were so many of them and it's my first time seeing about 20 of them around me! Good start to the meal, isn't it?I was escorted to a table by the window where you may watch the busy neighbourhood while sitting in a lovely hideaway ;) I ordered a hummus with a lava bread as a starter. The hummus was evidently a "house blend". Smooth and nice, but I would have loved more spices in it. The portion is sufficient. The bread is a little dry, which they could improve on.I had a chicken doner roll as the main. By the time I finished half of it I was full - because I had the hummus all to myself! Anyway, the doner roll's contents are fresh. The chicken was fragrant and the vegetables fabulous. They gave me different bottles of sauce to add to the roll. They could improve on the sauce that's already in the roll and did sip out, causing some liquidey plate... the bread is also a little dry. Overall, I quite liked it - more than other "fast food" kebabs I've had in HK! They really give you a decent amount of good chicken unlike other shops!Intermission: This extremely endearing Turkish kid comes to my table when his mom excused herself. He giggled at me and played with one of my bottles of kebab sauces. Before this, I saw him walk to the chef holding a piece of lemon - both the chef and I couldn't help smiling xDThis is my first Turkish tea in HK. The other one I had was in an Arabic cafe in Nanjing - I have to say this one is THE TEA. It's extremely delightful to sip, piping hot, and leaves an addictive aroma in your mouth cavity. If I were to have the same tea for the rest of my life, I'd have this Oh, and they really used the double-deck authentic Turkish pots to make the tea! What more could you ask for - except for a lower price than $15? ;)Then I ordered a Turkish coffee. To those new to Turks' cruisine, their coffees are from very fine ground. They boil it and if you want sugar they'll add it BEFORE boiilng it.I loved the coffee very, very much. A little like Vietnamese coffee but darker and more mysterious. Let's see how it goes when we open the very beautiful lids:Underneath the lids are my coffee and a Turkish delight and it's a pistachio turk delight (more expensive than plain ones)! Together $20.It was ABSOLUTELY HANDS DOWN the BEST turkish delight I've ever had - because it's not overly sticky, and is not overwhelmingly sweet! While I was ogling at the coffee and delight, the CHEF came over. And put a cup of tea on my table with a very cute happy face. He spoke in gibberish Turklish (Turkish English) which I guessed meant I ordered so much and should have some more tea.  Awww! It was complimentary and in Turkish culture, giving tea is an act of hospitality. So I smiled at him and nodded.I then asked if icecream is only for summer... as I really crave Turkish icecream. I regret doing so because again, he replied in gibberish but he looked like he was explaining something with great humour, so I laughed at the immensely intriguing conversation and we both happily ended the encounter. Thank you Chef! Some Turkish staff reader please tell Chef I loved his tea okay? I sat for a while longer watching the hospitable Turks around and read some papers. Let's end this review with the cutie - authentically and mesmerizingly Turkish, just like the restaurant:…Read More

Leaf Dessert

。。。。。The female boss is very rude since ages ago don't be too shocked or put off - the food is still great and they are in their 3rd generation The guy is much nicer so you can speak to him slower. But the female boss is very impatient. So decide quickly and point to what you want + hot/cold PRECISELY AND CONCISELY LOLLLLIt's very traditional hk dessert in a very old hk street setting. For expats I think the Sago dessert (cold only; no hot version) is more easy to relate to. Others are more local Asian desserts (fabulous to me as a local but expats may or may not understand the food and try it happily)The glutinous rice balls are FABULOUS AND A MUST TRY.Be openminded and you'll enjoy the food I like their desserts a lot BUT noodles are so-so and i prefer the local old noodle shop across the street right opposite them.…Read More

Heftily overpriced. Go to Singapore, not Hong Kong
Ya Kun Coffee & Toast
2015-01-27
A milo dinosaur costed around 30+ dollars but you can make it at home for very cheap so I had the toast set, with toast and eggs and tea (Teh-C ie milk tea) instead.Ah Kun is more expensive than Toast Box.The toast is o.k. but not enough kaya/butter in between - quite some blank space between the breads :'( The bread is more wheatly compared to Toast Box. If you like thinner toast with more brown flour you'd like this. The downside is, it is not that filling. The soft boiled eggs are done authentically. You are supposed to put soya sauce and pepper into the eggs and spoon them into your mouth - but a lot of customers around me didn't seem to know that.I would not come again - while the food is alright, it's overpriced in my opinion unless you have no chance of travelling to singapore or malaysia to try such foods. The environment is very busy and so I did not feel comfortable...I came because I felt nostalgic about Singaporean food. Yet the vibe is just too touristly.…Read More

***THEY CLOSE ON MONDAYS. And on other days at 9pm (note: i got this info on 27 Jan only) The barista is korean and the cashier is cantonese. Both very calm and welcoming people, and speak English well. They serve light food and interesting desserts.Bulgogi burrito is well made and not oily. It's like bulgogi inside a burrito wrap. The korean guy recommended me the omiji cha as drink and I absolutely loved it. it's my first time having that beverage and didn't expect it to be so refreshing yet warm at the same time! It's magical. If you're reading this Mr. Korea (lol) thanks for the suggestion. What I find has room for improvement would be the facilities although the place looks fabulous. The chairs are tiring to sit on as they are backless. Outdoor area is much larger but has mosquitoes even in this Winter weather at night. The songs are a big issue as well, they repeat very frequently. These aside, the food and drinks are worth trying and would I suspect appeal to younger people especially…Read More

^蠔仔煎 (OK)^滷肉飯(taiwanese pork rice),鹽酥雞…Read More
