Hidden gem in K11
Frederic Blondeel
2014-07-12
The other day when I was around the neighborhood for some smile fozen yogurt, I revisted this hidden gem in K11! I indulged in perhaps too many pieces at once (guilty) but they are truly heavenly  Here are some of my favorites: Sao tome chocolate: I sampled the sao tome dark chocolate and fell in love with it instantly...I decided to fill my box with a lot of them... It's a very rich and fudge-like dark chocolate with 75% cocoa content. Green tea chocolate: the green tea is very fragrant (not to confused with matcha) yet very light and refreshing. A bit bummed that it only comes in milk chocolate. Cassonade truffle: I generally prefer chocolate squares over truffles but the crunchy truffle "Cassonade" they serve here are quite interesting since the outer layer is caramelized. I would highly recommend this one it's indeed quite uniqueIrish Coffee truffle: The is definitely my FA-VO-RITE alcohol chocolate!!!!!! Very very smooth irish coffee whiskey blended with the rich and creamy milk chocolate ganache filling; the alcohol is very strong but it works perfectly with the chocolate and balances out its sweetnessDried fruit mendiant: My mom tried the dried fruit mendiant and she really liked the apricot The staff was helpful and offered some samples, but when I requested to try truffles they said its not available for sampling :S  …Read More

Smile Yogurt & Dessert Bar
2014-07-10
Revisited Smile Yogurt last week and tried one of their latest summer flavors - "wild summer."For $68, you get quite a bit of frozen yogurt along with layers of amazing toppings such as lychee, raspberry sauce, mango fruits, cookie crumbs, topped with a crispy apple ring and passion fruit and pineapple biscuit stick. The dessert itself is beautiful and perfect for photo opp! My favorite part is the lychee - it doesn't taste too articifial and the real fruit itself is also very sweet. The mango fruit is amazing too; I have tried other mango treats before and must praise them for being so consistent! With all the sumptuous toppings, I suspect this evil dessert is probably more fattening than a ice cream treat though You can buy the passion fruit and pineapple biscuit stick on the side as well. IMO the yogurt's sweetness overpowered the completely, so I suggest eat this first before you consume any yogurt and before it gets soggy! The service is only average. The sales wasn't very patient when I asked her to introduce the new flavors. Given that there was a long line when I was there I won't nitpick on that!    …Read More

Perfect cream!
Patisserie Mon cher
2014-07-10
I tried the classic cake roll, crepe cake, and the cream "dumpling." They are all amazing, basically as good as cream cakes get!The cream is very fresh, light, and fluffy. You can actually taste the buttery cream taste, unlike commercial cream products. No doubt that this type of cream is made of high fat content Japense cream, but the texture is so fluffy it makes the dessert seem very light and not too filling!I would highly recommend the cream dumpling, the skin is very thin and the "folds" adds great texture to the cake. The crepe cake and rolls are great too, but you can get decent crepe cake and rolls in other Japanese pastry places too.  …Read More

I want this for valentine's!
Frederic Blondeel

I am in love with this placeMy friend gave me a small box of truffles last weekend and I fell in love with the dark chocolate one so much that I decided to visit here myself the next day. I got a small bag for myself and a big box for my family. Everything looks so good! I am going to sound crazy for saying this but I think this place is better than La Maison Du Chocolat. I might be bias because I prefer flavored chocolates over pure dark chocolates. Here are my favorites: Rasberry dark chocolate: I love the tangy raspberry flavor and it is not too sweet Coffee dark chocolate: The coffee one is very strong. In fact, everytime I open the box I smell the coffee one first. Would highly recommend this if you like coffee flavored chocolatesBasil: This is very unique. Basil + chocolate sound very disgusting but they make a great match here. I don't really know how to describe this you really have to try it yourself. Kudos to the brand for making such an innovative creation I can't wait to try the other flavors but this place really needs to make a more complete chocolate menu. At least half of the chocolates were not in the menu they provided  One last note - the chocolates are priced quite reasonable. Most chocolates are $20 for a piece…Read More

best beef pie in town!
Islam Food (Lung Kong Road)
2014-01-20
This place got renovated recently. It's so clean now! Tried the famous beef pie and it's really good. Very very juicy and I love how the crust is chewy too. The scrambled egg white is on the oily side but it was also amazing. Would highly recommend this place! I had very high expectations and this place still managed to surprise me …Read More

great dim sums
Fan Tang
2011-05-26
I come here regularly on sundays for lunch. It's a decent chinese restaurant with excellent dim sums. I was REALLY impressed with their Siu Long Bao (soup dumplings). The soup was tasty, meat was juicy, and dumpling skin was delicate and made to perfection. Definitely comparable to Din Tai Fung. The Yin Yang Fried Rice (fried rice with red and white sauce) was not bad either. I thought it was weird that the restaurant doesn't serve Hor Fun (thick rice noodles) on a regular basis - apparently because they don't have time to make their own and don't bother to use the store-bought noodles!?For desserts, the Drippy Egg Yolk Buns really stood out. Think salted egg yolk blended into a sweet golden lava inside a classic steamed bun. It's way better than their Thousand Layered Cake (steamed white cake nested between salted egg yolk custard filling), which isn't bad but got too much custard paste for my liking. …Read More

Best Kaya Cake
Toast Box
2011-05-26
Toast Box probably introduced kaya cake to Hong Kong and they make by far the best ones. I am a suck up for its pandon flavor and lime green food coloring. The sponge cake is very fluffy and light. Maxim’s has a pretty good imitation of it but is denser and cakier. It is probably more buttery as well as it always leaves my fingers greasy, an aspect I don't like. Today, I got this chocolate bread and a "yeen yeung" (combo of coffee and milk tea) as well. The bread has real chocolate chips in it and you really can't go wrong from there It's a perfect to-go breakfast food. The drink is not bad either but definitely not worth the wait. I was in line for over 15 minutes when there were merely 5 people in front of me!…Read More

Pretty pretty yum yum
Papabubble
2011-05-26
Pappabubble is quite unlike any other confectionery out there. The walls and shelves are lined with beautiful jars and bags of little goodies. These rustic looking candies are hand-crafted onsite and they come in whimsical colors and flavors. I sampled all kinds of flavors: sour watermelon, licorice, soda pop, pink grapefruit...etc. The drops and pebbles are of different consistencies. They taste rather generic but I do love the unique textures of them. A 180g jar is $128 and a 60g bag is $42-48. Minimum order for customized rock candies is 6kg at $550/kg per design. Glass panels showcase the long steel table that somewhat resembles Cold Stone's "ice cream kitchen lab." You can watch candy makers pull and twist caramel strands into hard candies and lollipops there. The whole candy making process takes more than 30 minutes, so its likely that you will end up purchasing pre-made candies. I got a medium size lollipop ($110) and a unicorn pop as gifts. I was told that custom-made lollipops (personalized flavors, words and designs) may cost up to $300. The whole experience was fun but I am not crazy over these candies. However, I definitely can see myself ordering wedding / corporate gifts from here down the road. …Read More

Hokkaido Dairy Farm Milk Restaurant
2011-04-09
Hokkaido Diary Farm Milk Restaurant is a successful imitation of the famous “Australian Dairy Company.” Their menus are essentially identical, but Hokkaido provides a cleaner environment, more convenient location (note this review applies to the central branch only) and better services. My crew arrived early at 12 to avoid the queue and was seated promptly. To our surprise, we were not pressured to leave whatsoever (quite the opposite at Australian dairy), although the benches and rowdy crowd are not trying to make you stay long by any means. My scrambled eggs were done perfectly– runny, VERY buttery, and full of egg flavors. However, my colleague’s egg sandwich looked very overcooked. Nostalgic feelings aside, I still prefer the food of Australian Dairy’s. Their eggs are way more consistent and more importantly, I don't feel sick / guilty after consuming them. Last week, I lunched at Hokkaido and was full until 9pm! Very unusual for me and there's only one simple explanation – too much butter and even more hidden calories than I thought! …Read More

Must Go!
Australia Dairy Company
2011-04-09
This is a very traditional cha chan tang and frankly, a must go restaurant in Hong Kong. Fluffy, buttery, eggy scrambled eggs live up to the hype. The steamed egg / milk custards are as good as custards get. I find the cha siew macaroni too salty but apparently the classic dish is meant to taste that way.Be prepared to line up for five to ten minutes (any time of the day) and share a table with strangers. Service is quick and courteous. Don’t be intimidated! All in all, what needs to be said about this restaurant has already been said in one of the 1800+ reviews. Definitely a thumbs up!!!!…Read More

Not worth it
L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon
2011-04-09
Let's start with the bread basket - great selection but I was disappointed that the bread wasn't warm...The free appetizer of the day was some kind of prosciutto wrapped around a soft dough. It was a nice surprise. I shared a caprese salad with my date. The tomato was good - juicy and fresh but not particularly sweet. The mozzarella, on the other hand, was SO GOOD. They were so fresh and milky. Probably the best you could get in Hong Kong! I ordered a pasta carbonara with sea urchin from the a lar carte menu (around $600). I've had excellent sea urchin pastas before but this one was a huge FAILURE. I mixed the sea urchin with half of the pasta (knowing I can't finish the whole thing), yet my first bite tasted exactly like a regular carbonara... It was such a disappointment that the sauce and the egg yolk completely overpowered the sea urchin rather than complement it. To make matters worse, the linguine was not al dente. Although the rich and creamy sauce still qualifies this dish as a great carbonara, it was too heavy for my liking. After 15 minutes, the thickened sauce basically glued the pasta together, making it impossible to wind up the pasta. Anyhow, there is no doubt the service and environment are superior. The bill came out to be $1200 for 2 people. *extra points for offering tap water*!…Read More

Sushi Toku
2011-03-30
This low-key japanese restaurant make customers return for 2 simple reasons: decent food quality and very friendly service. The majority of staff and customers are japanese - which is always a good sign. There are so many Japanese restaurants in hong king yet it is really hard to find an authentic one like sushi toku. Aside from the usual sushi items, their menu offers a wide selection of traditional cooked fish dishes. like other japanese restaurants, set lunch is of great value (around $160). …Read More

Sushi Shin Japanese Restaurant
2011-02-26
one of my favorite japanese restaurants in town. i usually get the 8 pce sushi set for lunch. quality is consistent and price is very reasonable. dinner's quality is superior but pricey for this location. if money is not an issue, get omakase all the way. the sushi chefs have interesting recommendations. last time i had the best raw corn EVER and this weird clam sushi (usually not a fan of clams, octopus, squids...). uni and toro were so good as usual. usually $900 per head. For ladies, i suggest getting 6 pces of sushi and end the meal with udon. your bill will come out as $600ish crappy phone pic doesn't do the sushi justice. …Read More
