Disappointing dinner
Sushi Rin
2020-03-24
Made a last minute booking for our anniversary dinner. Called a few restaurant and finally this one have spot. The reviews on openrice seems good so thought we will give it a try around $1500 for an Omakase meal, so shouldn't be too bad. The atmosphere was clean and nice, a few seats around the bar and a few couples. The chef wasn't very talkative and didn't really explain much and the food wasn't very outstanding for the price. There are definitely better Omakase restaurants in Hong Kong. But I would like to point out, if you want at a quiet evening, this place wouldn't it be for you. It is more like a izakaya. Shortly after the other customers left, a couple came into the restaurant and was loud and obnoxious. It was very irritating because the restaurant wasn't very big.  Really ruined the mood of the whole dinner. Lastly if you are interested in plum wine, you better call and ask before going as they make their own. When I went it was all sold out. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant for the price and quality of the food. …Read More

Scarlett Cafe & Wine Bar

This isn't the first time I've been to Scarlett Cafe. Their food is tasty and with BOGO deal, you cannot miss it. But you are required to present your super mondays card to get the deal.We ordered steak, chicken, and 2 pasta please an order of beef tartare. The beef tartare's taste can be improved slightly. The other dishes were great. Really loved the ravioli, but the portion can be bigger. The chicken was hard to serve as it comes as a full baby chicken. The knife they provide doesn't really help, but great appearance. Really love their service too. I will definitely return. A nice place to have a drink with friend as they have lots of variety of wine and they have 2 floors too.…Read More

Saw the great reviews on Open Rice, so I decided to booked a table through openrice and get the offer of free snack. When we ordered, we were informed that because it was a "weekend" (Friday) we have to order 1 set each, which was fine. Just a little worried that we won't be able to finish all the food. The soup and bread came, So far it wasn't bad.We ordered  pasta, risotto, steak and baby back ribs. The dishes came relatively fast which is good. The taste was decent for the price that we are paying. Large portions and not too salty. I was especially impressed with the ribs. I like how the steak and ribs includes salads so you can accommodate veggies in your diet. You can skip the dessert tho, not very appealing. I would suggest saving your money and go to another dessert place near by.I am not very pleased with the service tho. There are quite a lot of servers on a Friday night. However, it always seem like it is very hard to get their attention. Good thing, there inst a time limit on seating. Nice place to chill and relax with your friends. …Read More

Toyo Katte Don
2019-02-20
I first came to this restaurant when they just opened. The food and seafood was really good back then. Since the owner changed, the quality hasn't seem to have kept up. However, we decided to give it another chance the other day. We were sat at the restaurant beside it , which was all bar tables and very crowded. Every time the staff walks behind me, they would have somehow managed to nudge or shove me a slight bit. Wasn't the best environment. I'll suggest eating at the actual restaurant with tables. Anyways, we ordered the uni and onion tuna don, salmon with fish egg don  and grilled egg with eel.The food came fast, which is good because I was hungry. The uni wasn't  that fresh. but there was a lot of onion tuna. Its great that the restaurant let you refill the rice. The salmon and fish egg could be colder. Nothing too special to mention about. The grilled egg with eel, we expected it to be hot or at least warm, but it was cold ... not really what I was expecting. But the taste was good.Overall, the quality and quantity wasn't what it was before. I guess I'll need to find myself another japanese don restaurant. …Read More

Self-service restaurant
Zakka
2018-02-08
Really wanted to eat some souffle pancake ... but the line up at flippers is too crazy ... So I went to give Zakka a try. It was a Wednesday night when I went, To my surprise, there were lots of tables. We went in and the server said we can seat wherever. He gave us a menu and then said we can pay at the front. That is when I realized it was a self-service place. I was just a little shocked at that, as I was expecting a full-serviced restaurant. The menu is pretty extensive with starters, pasta, pizza, salad, curry, burger and dessert. We ordered a burger, curry, wings and later the souffle pancake. I was a little ticked off that they didnt have the pork cutlet curry rice ... so we switched to the chicken. Then after like 30 mins, the customers beside us got pork cutlet curry rice ... WHY WHYYYY. very VERY upsetting! Anyways the food's bad. We ordered the beef burger. it comes with a sunny side up egg. The egg yolk was slightly over cooked, which made the yolk not flowly when you bite into it. The truffle sauce was really good. The food are more japanese fusion western food. therefor the taste was a little sweet, which I like. The chicken wings was really good. I loved the honey mayo sauce. If they could only give us a little more that would be perfect. It comes with 3 full wings cut in half. The chicken curry rice was a little disappointment. There was too much curry sauce for the amount of rice and chicken provided. It pretty much flooded the dish. The chicken was not tender, kind of hard and tasteless. The curry sauce was good, but if they could provide potatoes as well that would be perfect. Last but not least, the souffle pancake. The menu said it will take about 30 mins to prepare. Therefore, we decided to order it after our meal. We didn't have to wait that long before it arrives. The pancake came with ice cream, honey, cream and some fruits. The souffle was good. I really enjoyed it. However, it could be a little fluffier. But the taste worked really well. A great ending to any meal. All the food came hot and steamy which is a plus for me. But the fact that I have to get my own cutlery and water really turned me off. The price wasn't cheap too. About  $175 per person. I'm sure I can get the same quality food at this price elsewhere.  Never the less, this place was big, and spacious . I'm still debating if I should come again, but it is worth a try. …Read More

Tasty snake stew
She Wong Yee
2018-02-01
We decided to come here when the days were cold in Hong Kong. We waited a little bit because this place is in the Michelin guide.  We had the snake stew, sticky rice and bbq pork with chicken on rice. the snake stew was FABULOUS! loved it. The snake stew  had lot of taste and have a lot of ingredients in it. It would be nice to get more of the crispy things and lemongrass with my stew. The sticky rice was good, nothing to special about it. It comes with preserved chinese sausages. That was a bit hard, and it wasnt cut up, so it's just doesnt seem to go along with each other.bbq pork with chicken on rice was also nothing special. Well, they are famous for their snake stew, can't expect too much for everything else. …Read More

Layback Cafe & Bar

My friend and I wanted a quiet place for some girl time after shopping in TST.This place is small but cosy.  We went early so there wasn't really anyone else there. But it gradually became busy as time went by. We ordered 2 pasta, one with a set, portabello mushroom and each got a drink. The set comes with soup and dessert for $50 extra. You can choose any dessert from the menu cost $42 and it gives you $10 off the drink. Not a bad deal at all. Overall the food taste good and the portion size wasn't bad. Very descent indeed.  However, the food got cold fairly quickly as the door to the patio was open. The strawberry and rose tea was a bit sweet for our tasting, and the earl tea cake doesn't have any earl tea flavour. Other than that the meal was lovely. The service was good. The waitress that served us was very cherry and happy. She was also helpful with promoting the set. However, most of the time the waitress and servers were hidden in the kitchen. It was hard to grab them at times. It would be better if they were a little more attentive. Overall, great place. Will definitely come again …Read More

My favourite handroll place
Kuma Yummy
2018-01-19
This place is a gem in Causeway Bay. Though it is only a small restaurant with a few standing tables, but don't let the outlook fool you. The price and quality that they provide is amazing. Their uni hand rolls are to die for. I've had it quite a few times and its always been fresh and tasty.  It's amazing how they can keep the quality so consistence and yet their price hasn't really changed. Along with hand rolls they also sell oysters. There are at least 8 different types of oysters every time. They do try to get different oysters from all over the world in addition to the common ones that are seen around Hong Kong. Prices for the oysters are reasonable compare to super markets and restaurants. However, you would need to pay a small fee for them to open the oysters. If not, you can open them yourself. I was really surprise with this giant US oyster that I've tried there. It was literally the size of my palm. Honestly you won't be able to find it in a lot of places. All of the oysters that I've tried here were fatty. If you enjoy sashimi and oysters. This is a place to be! …Read More

Omakase Dinner
Sushi Ta-ke
2018-01-19
I've been looking at places for Omakase in Hong Kong. Apparently the time that I want to go was the time the japanese fish market was closed, so many restaurants were closed. Eventually, I've called up Sushi Ta-ke and was told that the restaurant would be open. I was a little hesitant to try, as I've called about 3-4 restaurants without any luck. Either way, it was one of the restaurants that I wanted to try and the review on openrice wasn't bad. So we gave it a shot. When I made the reservation, the host had asked if we would like to sit at the bar. I thought that was a great idea as with my previous omakase experience, sitting at the bar gives you the most experience and interaction with the chef. The restaurant was pretty empty when we went in at around 7ish.  We were there for the omakase, so we were just deciding which one we wanted. The chef special have something that I'm not too fond of. So we end up choosing the Omakase Ta-ke. which was $1500HKD per person. There was quite a few options. Overall it was good, but wasnt AMAZING. The uni was yum yum, but for the price I am paying ... it BETTER be good.  The egg, really surprised me. I thought it was cake, but it's really egg, with the texture of the cake. I really enjoyed that. Everything else was pretty good. but really not worth the price I am paying for. I personally wouldn't come back, as I can probably get better quality for the price I am paying elsewhere or cheap price and same quality. I would say, the service there was good. Maybe they just have a lot of staff around, so they are very attentive. …Read More

We were craving for some Japanese food and wanted to try something new. We went to circle tower and there were many many choices. We eventually tried this. There weren't any bad reviews on openrice. We got up, and there weren't many tables as it was getting a bit late. The first impression I got from the waitress was we  were unwanted as it was getting late. However, my impression of the restaurant changed throughout our meal.We ordered some sushi, rolls, sashimi, eel rice and some skewers.  I wasn't really expecting much. But the sashimi and sushi was pretty good. you can tell it is fresh and high quality. The skewer and eel rice was average. nothing too special about that. However, for the price you are paying and the quality you are getting. It is very good. I would definietly come again.I feel that it is a more family own restaurant. The waitress and sushi chef would like to come and speak to you. They like to try to make it as  a casual and friendly atmosphere. I will definitely come back.…Read More

Another Pho place to add to my favourite
Fûhn (The L. Square)
2017-11-27
I’ve passed by this place quite a few times ... but was a little hesitant to try it ... as lots of pho places in Hong Kong isn’t good.We ended up  giving it a try one night. Not sure, where I hear this, but fuhn has the taste of Canadian  pho. So I was really looking forward to it, as another place in HK mentioned this and was totally not up to par. Went in and LOVED how they have the sizing. Their price was quite reasonable as well. We ordered 2 pho and a pomelo and shrimp salad.  the table is equipped with hoisan sauce and sriracha *thumbs up* The pho was great! Soup was hot and full of flavour. Very Canadian. The bowl looked huge (I ordered a regular) but the portion was perfect for me. I believe they use US beef, so the beef was tender. There's also quite a few slices for the price.  They also provide different type of fresh herbs to add to your pho. However, we weren't given this and couldn't be bothered to ask. The pomelo and shrimp salad was a little disappointing. the portion looked big when it arrived, but not so after digging in.  The taste was a bit bland, even after adding the sauce the waiter had suggested. I will definitely come back for the food again. However, the service could use some improvement. The restaurant was pretty packed when we arrived. There was a really hard working guy, who pretty much saw and provided help to majority of the guest. The others seem to be doing their own thing more. Not really paying attention to the guest. It took me a while before I could find someone to get me the bill.Overall, a great place for a good bowl of pho! …Read More

Don't know what the hype is about
The Pudding Nouveau
2017-08-04
We came here for a late lunch around 3, hoping to get some good food as the review for this place is off the charts and I've been dying to try it. He came at around 3 and didn't have to wait for a table. The place is small about 5 tables. There isn't a lot of choices on the menu, but I was craving for all day breakfast so that was fine. Since we just woke up, and wasn't too hungry. We ordered the chicken wings and all day breakfast. We wanted to try the duck waffles, however the wait time was a little too long so we skipped that. The chicken wings was really tender and the breaded wings was crispy. The dill mustard sauce was fabulous, really enjoyed this dish. However, the all day breakfast was a bit of a disappointment for me. The whole dish came out warm/cold depending on what you eat. I guess they didn't manage the time too well for all the food to be plated. Even though, the mushrooms were a bit cold the taste was amazing. Everything else in the dish was rather average. Also, butter wasn't given for the toast, which was a bit of a shame. Maybe their other dishes and dessert would be better. However, chances of me going again would be quite skim. The seating aren't very comfortable, there isn't a washroom to use for customers (have to go to a public washroom near by). And the food isn't as outstanding as I imagine it to be. …Read More

This was the second time visiting this restaurant. I had a very pleasant first visit. However, this visit was by far the worst I've experienced and would NEVER come again. We were a party of 2, wanting to grab some small bites before a movie as we were both not very hungry. Since the restaurant opens till late we would have lots of time to just sit and relax before the movie, which was close by.We were greeted very friendly by the waitresses. We sat down and within 5 seconds a waitress came and told us about the offers. Fair enough, we then asked for a little bit more time to actually look through the menu to see what we wanted to get. After the first waitress, a second waitress came very quickly afterwards. She was suggesting us items and such. I was a bit fed up as I haven't even had a chance to look through the menu. After that I don't even want to eat there. It's like why are you hard selling me? Anyways, we weren't to hungry so we got some skewers and beer. The waitress whom took our order gave me the impression that we ordered too little and kept up selling up selling and up selling! First, its not that I don't want to order more. However, you must get a min of 2 skewers which has to be the same. 1. We are not hungry. 2. We don't have the same preference in food. Don't know why have this rule. There also isn't much variety of food to choose from. It's not like I don't want to order, just don't have many choices. For this price there are plenty of other restaurants to choose, why do I have to come to you?…Read More

Captain's Japanese Restaurant
2017-08-04
I've been here a few times, and their quality of food is not bad. Especially, if you dine in pass 9:30PM, it only cost $198/pp for 1.5 hours AYCE. They do have top up options, $18/pp for hot pot and $38/pp for "premium" items which includes: foie gras, baked oysters, jumbo scallops etc. The premium is pretty  worth it for the items that you get. However, the foie gras was a little disappointing as they do not have the sauce for it. But the baked oyster was surprisingly good. The quality of the food is pretty decant for an AYCE restaurant. The sashimi are fresh and there are lots of variety of foods to choose from. I also enjoy the operation of the restaurant. E.g. I get what I order, and it comes in a timely manner. Unlike other restaurants where you would need to chase for items and they would give you more or less of what you ordered. …Read More

Secret treasure in Causeway Bay
Toyo Katte Don
2017-08-03
I am really hesitant to write this review because I don't want to reveal this treasure and have to line up for it. BUt this place is simply AMAZING! It is by far the BEST don place in Hong Kong! The price is very reasonable for the quality of seafood. And the sushi rice has FREE REFILL!!! Usually, you have more seafood left over and would actually need more rice to finish it.I usually order the uni and onion tuna don. The uni is really fresh ALL THE TIME. (I've been here at least 5 times in the past couple months) The amount of tuna you get is about half an inch thick. The quantity and quality of this place is exceptional. The price is also very fair about 200$ for a don. This is the market price, but other places doesn't have seafood that is as fresh. The waiters are also very friendly and nice. However, the place is really small about 4 tables. But it is comfortable and I've never experience sharing a table with others. …Read More
