Weekday lunch
Pokka Cafe (荃灣千色匯II)
2022-01-24
Situated inside Kolour Mall, that explains above average business.Overall experience is average.Lobster bisque - this is best tasting dish in this lunch. Rich flavourful with just the right amount of bitter aftertaste and bits of lobster.Fried seabass with scallops- very big portion. Good amount of vegetables.Tomato based sauce is ok, maybe they should not have covered the seabass with sauce so that you can taste seabass with crispy skin. Red velvet cake -looks nice but taste average as probably not fresh enough and its beginning to dry up.Coffee quite ok with fruity acidity.…Read More

Lunch revisited
Pasticceria Giovanni Pina 1920 (如心廣場一期)
2022-01-24
Tried this restaurant a few times. Am glad that the service has improved and now you get to choose cake of your choice(some months ago you can't choose the cake  you want):)Rich mushroom taste, not too creamyIt said cream of black truffles and mushroom but I couldn't smell or taste taste black trufflesKinda hard to distinguised the two when you mixed them together So just a mushroom soup but quite nice.Slow cooked pork chop with mustard balsamic sauce.Slow cooking preserved the tenderness of pork, thinly sliced potatoes are great but the looks could be improved, maybe should fry it longer so that the surface don't break up and will certainly look nicer on plate.Apple pie with many layers of thinly sliced apples, most important it is not too sweet, however the middle of the pie is not warm enough, maybe need half more minute in the oven.Coffee - rich bold taste with slight acicity.:)…Read More

Outdoor Dining Experience
Palco Ristorante
2022-01-08
First outdoor dining at Palco but on a hazy day.Wonderful outdoor dining which will be perfect on a sunny day with some cool breeze, sunny but comfortably cool. There are big dining umbrellas to keep you from being fried under direct sun at noon time! Nice experience very spacious, bring your sunglasses on a sunny day and imagine you are dining by some riveria. However, expect less attention dining outdoor and servers were more busy indoorsClams in seafood sauce - Very tender and juicy with nicely toasted garlic bread niceGrilled squid salad - beautifully executed squid retaining all the tenderness and rich seafood flavourGrilled duck breast - a bit overdone and the duck has become too tough:(, the sides are good with glazed potatoes, cherry tomato, asparagus and sauteed onion.Risotto with red prawn - big and sweet red prawns and perfect risotto execution with just right amount of creaminess and bits of prawn meat to provide textures and flavours.Cheese cake - nice plating, not too sweat, if the fruits could be incorporated in the cake would be much better …Read More

Pretty impressed by the food quality, taste and presentation, lunch menu has a very good range to cater to different needs.Cauliflower soup - a little too watery, and bread becomes soggy very fast when added to soup when served. Soup tastes alright but not too special. Halibut- impressed when saw this presentation, first impression is very important Very vibrant colors love this, generous portion of miso sauce sauteed vegetables, taste like Japanese style teppanyaki fried vegetables. Halibut very juicy, but the skin was not crispy enough though. Served with two thick pieces of Halibut yummy!Tomatoes came with vine attached, not bad for presentation. There is crispy sweet potato to add texture and sweetnessTiramusu - Wow the best looking tiramusu seen recentlylook at the presentation of the toppings, looks great! Topping consists of desicated sliced orange, lime and fresh fruit. If the cream cheese could be less dense would certainly be perfect! Coffee - medium roast with acidity, good for people preferring more acidity and less bold taste. There are sofa seats by the side which is so comfortable when you want to relax and lie backWhen you lie back you will see restaurant decoration made of light plastic/paper that moves around in the aircon breeze.…Read More

Post Christmas lunch set
Cova Pasticceria & Confetteria (海洋中心)
2021-12-30
Went to Cova at Gateway but got no seats and came here instead! Went for the Christmas themed lunch set.The seating is in an open area and there is less privacy. Service is good.Bread basket with antipasti platter. The bread is nicely warmed good start for cold weather Antipasti platter comes with cheese, salad and cold cuts with melon, not too bad.Carrot and sweat potato soup with ginger - reminiscent of chinese dessert sweet potatoes with ginger, with addition of carrots! Quite nice not too creamy with very smooth texture!Spicy chili linguine with prawn, zuchinni and cherry tomato sauce - nicely spiced and al dente, simple and good tomato base.  But somehow there is something I don't like about the texture of the linguine. Chose the panettone gelato given it is Christmas themed lunch! The gelato in between panettone slices elevated the overall sensation which otherwise would just be a sweet fruity cakeRich and bold tasting coffee…Read More

King's Delicacy (The LOHAS)
2021-12-26
There is indoor and outdoor seating for this restaurant. Outdoor environment for people who like a bit of breezeDan dan noodles - average probably need slightly more spiciness, it is slightly more sweet and sour then spicy.Sour spicy soup - below par, even from the looks you can tell :(Grilled lamb ribs - this is good. Very nicely done and the lamb is soft and tender. There is a layer of thinly sliced skin, but the skin is what I would say is half crispy, it is not totally crispy like a suckling pig. Flavour is good, but the lamb ribs are quite fatty. Sour spicy fish - grouper fish is used to make it a more premium dish, not many pieces of the grouper fish though.. In terms of taste would say it is ok but not outstanding.Shanghai dumpling - this is good and freshly steamed very well executed in time control. Simple dish yet very well done.…Read More

Pizza Maru (荃新天地)

KFC= Korean Fried ChickenThis restaurant has three branches now. Had visited this branch several times and never disappointed with the fried chicken. . During peak hours, seating and queuing can be a bit messy !There are set lunches during weekdays, but no fried chicken is in the set so you have to order ala carte for it.Many different flavours, spicy, cheesy, curry etc....basically the same fried chicken as basic ingredients and sauces or toppings to add different flavours. There are half portion sizes which you can order .  Usually I ordered the half portion just to taste different flavours. The fried chicken is not oily but crispy that's why I like it a lotThe Hawaiian styled pizza is worth trying too. Very nice cheesy filled crust!Very nice risotto with dried tomatoes, creamy and cheesy.Baked risotto, taste similar to the one above …Read More

Shiawase Yakitori (K11 Art Mall)
2021-12-22
Been to Shiawase at Harbourcity so decided to try this outlet. It has Izakaya ambience with its yellow lightings and decoration. Ordered the Wagyu short rib and added a side dish of vegetables/fruit with pork roll. The short rib has a bit of graininess so it is not really a good cut:(. Just average in taste nothing unusual. The pork roll side dish consists of strawberry, tomato and pineapple with pork belly wrapped around them. Average in taste too.…Read More

Weekday mussel lunch
THE MUSSELS
2021-12-16
Just opened recently.Small restaurant, not too many tables. Got to seat at the bar counter today and able to see the chefs in action and learn a few tricks.Pumpkin soup with curry flavour - very nice bright colour, topped with croutons. Adding curry is a good try but felt it was too overpowering and overwhelms the good taste of pumpkin.Seasonal salad - peeled cherry tomatoes, other than that it was not too exciting, just too simple.Salmon with mussels - salmon was perfectly seared on four sides, the interior still soft . Mussels very tender, with good salt water flavour.. Tomato based sauce very well balanced in taste with acidicity and creaminess. Would be nicer if it comes with toast to wipe clean the plate.…Read More

Situated at the middle floor of artfully designed shopping mall, you could have a close shot of a big iconic metal globe. Seats at the centre of the circular dining area are too closely spaced such that you could hear the next table clearlyselect seats at the peripheral for better privacy..Shrimp avocado salad - very fresh shrimp, yuzu dressing, simple and taste good.:) Lamb cutlets - coated with mustard and pistachios, very tender medium done. Rich lamb flavours Port wine reduction provides extra sweetness and acidity, better than mint sauce. Roast potatoes with sliced and mashed potatoes with buttery rich flavours.  Nicely cooked asparagus provides good crunch. Very happy with this main course..Coffee- taste good but bad execution as the coffee is not warm enough, got to take points away from service:(. Nice cookie with fruit puree!Cake of your choice - five layers, different flavours, not too sweet. Many different cakes to choose from and good reason to come back another time…Read More

Revisit.Definitely come with friends so that you can share the food and taste more dishes.Ginseng tempura- not bad as a start, goes well with 🍺 just too little of it. Crispy with a tad of ginseng bitterness.Enoki Apple salad- sweet and citrus very refreshingly very pretty dishfull of textures, soft jelly, crunchy kale, crushed pistachios .Green pancake- tofu interior with corn with seaweed exterior. A bit bland, seaweed is not too crispy probably due to the moisture from the tofu corn filings.Soup of the day- pumpkin soup. Not as flavourful as hoped. Pumpkin taste not forthcoming enough.Seaweed rolls with vermicelli- very crispy seaweed rolls, vermicelli filling soft texture contrast with very crispy exterior The brown sauce is more for plating as it is too thick too thin to coat the seaweed roll. Guess would be better if the sauce could be made into a mousse for dipping!.Sweat and sour pork, oops beg your pardon, should be sweet n sour mushrooms 🍄!. This is very well done, no extra sauce dripping around, slightly spicy 🌶 sweet n source.Chilled noodles with 🍅 tomato-sweet crushed tomatoes with sesame oil n seeds. Too sweet to me, would be better if there were slightly more acidity.but guess this is typical Korean style cold noodle taste. Nonetheless it is chilled and refreshing.Kimchi fried rice-very rich in flavours, tiny bits of kimchi and carrots 🥕 for those who like strong taste , prefer this to chilled noodles as like to finish with warm stomach .Portion size is a bit light, so if you are a big eater you need to order those with potatoes, rice etcunless you look to have the next meal early.…Read More

Love this open kitchen, bright modern deco thou not romanticFocaccia bread with tomatoes- very soft fluffy, the crisps just ok as I prefer a more crispy type, this one has more oil content making it slightly more flaky.  The smoked olives is a Wow to me as this is the first time I have smoked olives haha! Added another level of taste to the olives.Amber jack crudo with citrus and sea urchin emulsion - Wow so colourful! The raw fish goes very well with the sweet and acidic citrus emulsion, the diced vegetable stems provide good crunch. When you taste the sea urchin emulsion after the citrus one it created a 180 degrees change in taste sweet acidic to fishy savory. Was thinking if the sea urchin and citrus emulsion is a good combination or not. I could certainly go with just the citrus one alone. But stand alone the sea urchin is definitely very nice.Toothfish with zucchini mint cream - another work of art. So visually appealing. Tooth fish is perfectly cooked, topped with mild pimento spiced breadcrumbs. Crunchy mildly spicy top meets with very juicy delicate white flesh, what a match! Mild pasley minty cream with toothfish is perfect match. Could be the best tasting toothfish dish recently..Berries, sorbet dessert - the glass plate makes it look as if the dessert is served on ice, fabulous. The fruits are all sweet but not too sweet with strawberry, raspberry, blackcurrent and blue berry. This should be a good punch of antioxidants hahaSorbet is very mildly flavoured with beetroot.Carmelised sugar wafer provides good crunch.…Read More

Pancake House HoiHoi (荃新天地)

Why am I not having pancakes at a pancake restaurant?Cos there is no pancake in the set lunch nor could you add pancake as a supplement.Nice sweet corn soup with crushed corn pulp providing good texture.Coffee - not bad with some acidity.:)and not bitter.Lamb chops - very nicely cooked and very tender, more rendering of fat could elicit more lamb flavours.:)Don't really like the texture of wedged potatoes as they tasted soft and more like croquettes.Comfortable interior below.…Read More

Classic Chinese decor ambience with two floors. The upper floor is like cinema circle seats where you could see diners below. It is relative noisy seated on the upper floor due to the chattering on the lower floorGood balanced combinations consisting of steamed, baked and fried traditional dim sum. Too traditional to have Wow factor.Deluxe dumpling with bamboo pith and fish maw- very lightly flavoured soup, was expecting stronger flavour breaking into the dumpling but not so. So not much contrast in flavour intensity. Nicely coloured broth with couscous, peas and chick peas. Was expecting finally this could be a Wow but not soagain this is lightly flavoured. Don’t feel excited besides looking exciting .Vegetables in fish broth- finally very strong flavours of fish broth just a tad too salty. Very strong rich flavoured fish brothnotice the little fried bits. Those are like tiny pieces of fried fish in batter with very intense fish flavour, adding a lot of texture and crispy sensation Fried japanese rice with yunnan ham-salty taste of ham and not too oily.Mango pudding- looks good taste above average mangoes not sweet enough guess the not the right season.…Read More

Was here one month ago, glad they changed their menu a little, I can try something new!Ambience is nice and seating is well spaced. Portion size is just appropriate and not too much so that you won’t doze off after lunchif you are a big eater just get from bread 🥖 .Salmon tartare- nice presentation. Good texture contrast with crisps, good seasoning. The green mayonnaise maybe too much and don’t feel it combines well with the salmon, maybe goes better with fried salmon! This time the presentation is nicer with the vegetables sliced in half, a little more effort has improved it visually. Fish is cooked well to maintain the tenderness. Cooking in Confit style has improved its tenderness compared to usual pan fried approach!Honey glazed duck breast, nicely pink colour, good duck taste without gamy flavour. The meat is tender and juicy! Pomme Anna or sliced potatoes is very nice toopersonally prefer this duck dish to the seabass for stronger flavours.Very nice mango mousse cake, many different textures, layers within, not too sweet eat this slowly appreciating the mixture of diced mango, mango chocolate exterior, chocolate cake pieces, biscuit powder, egg white meringue Set lunch comes with coffee too which I forgot to take photo.Langham card 20pct off…Read More
