This also explains the "private club" character as there is no official restaurant license given out in residential buildings. This also means the whole place is more cozy, smaller and better in service than the usual huge and loud Dim Sum Places elsewhere. The FoodFantastic, the portions are big and the flavour and texture of the Shanghainese styled food is great. Shanghainese naturally is pretty greasy, and that's what you get here as well. Especially dishes such as the "Pork Knuckle" or the "Shrimp in Egg paste" are high on cholesterol and calories, but fantastic in taste. Our must tries are the marinated eggs with perfect egg yolg texture, the pork knuckle and the sweet rice desert. We didnt like the Xiao Long bao though, as the soup inside wasn't hot enough and the skin was too thick.I also have to add that everything here is very reasonable priced, means we shared well over 10 dishes and walked out with a per head spending of approx 200HK$.…Read More

It's pretty much "Order - Money - Coffee - Go". The PlaceThe Place caters obviously everyone working in and around IFC2. There are little places to sit down, but at least you can bring your clients here for a chat / coffee or simply give yourself a short timeout before heading back into the officeThe FoodThe coffee is good, freshly brewed, and my personal favourite is the Black Americano, medium sized (23HK$). Enough to bring me through the first hours of the morning. Flavour is good, same goes for the other coffee blends.I have only tried their Sausage roll so far which is yummy. The sausage tastes good and is reasonable sized, and the batter is just right (make sure to let them heat it up, its double deliciopus when warm).…Read More

It's nicely refurbished from the previous smoothie store. Easily reached from central MTR station. Just follow the escalator and get off at Lyndhurst Terrace. The FoodOf course I had to try this place. I am a bread enthusiast (being German that's all we have 80% of the day), and if there is one thing that is dearly missing in Hong kong, it's crispy, fresh, oven warm German Bread. If you haven't been to Europe, or Germany, you might not know what I am talking about, because for some reason, all you get in Asia is this horrible, mushy, soft bread where the crust is the same texture as the inside. And that's wrong.Good Bread is crispy and crunchy on the crust, warm and wheaty on the inside, and best served 1-2 hours after coming out of the oven. The Bread at Swissbeck is ok in Asian standard, but once again missing the crispy punch. The baked goods seem to be fresh and are good in flavour, the buns, Pretzels and Danishs likewise. You can tell they are made locally and by someone experienced, but they simply lag the last bit of crunch. Also the breads are quite steap priced, from 50HK$ onwards.…Read More

It's a local eatery, run by an an older couple, you wont come here for the service, you come here for the congee. However the cashier lady is nice and sufficient in taking your order, once ordered wait outside (if you ordered takeout of course only) and they will bring you your congee once ready. The PlaceIt's on Lyndhurst Terrace near the midlevels escalator. Inside is the usual local simple style, with seating areas cramped together, some round tables in the middle. It can get claustrophobic here during lunch, be warned. So i would recommend take out.The FoodTheir signature dish is Congee, and thats really the best thing to get here. It wouldn't fill me up as a normal lunch or dinner, but it's perfect and my number one choice in those rainy days when the flue and cough viruses are spreading. It's nicely decorated inside, and the toilets are not male or female, but "Standing" and "Sitting".The FoodThe Cakes are nice, and we especially like the Blackforest Cake, which has great texture, good cream and a solid cherry/chocolate foundation. Coming from Germany this gets actually quite close to the original one. They also serve waffles with creme and berry sauces.Their drinks are mainly coffees and other hot drinks (tea, chocolate, etc), although they serve Cocktails and bottle beer as well. Prices are reasonable (40 HK$ per bottle).Yesterday we tried 2 of their "Liquor Coffees" as this is something we drink in Germany during the christmas period a lot. But hey, that's not a bad thing right? So yeah, service is great here. The PlaceBetween Central and Sheung Wan, around the Wet Market (unfortunately) next to the central waste disposal center (although you wont recognize once inside the place). You can easily walk here from Central OR Sheung Wan station. The place itself is 2 storeys, downstairs the sushi bar and a tiny seating area, upstairs are the bigger tables and where the guests usually are placed. The FoodThe food is good Sushi with a big selection of dishes, raw fish, fried dishes and soups, anything you want. I particularly enjoy the "Sushi" here so I would recommend those. As mentioned above the size of the dishes is sometimes a bit too small for my liking, especially the sashimi, so maybe skip that. The Rolls are good, although too small as well.My absolute favourite dish here is the Beef Banana. Either you love it or you hate it, but you have to try it any ways! Its small chunks of Banana wrapped in thin sliced, grilled beef, topped with a sweet sauce and a tiny bit of Majo. The texture is great, and the mixture of salty beef and almost caramelized Banana very unique.…Read More

What we often have at places like these are local "I don't care approach" personal that doesn't really care if your yoghurt arrives upside down or not, any ways, today we really got all toppings we asked for packed on our yoghurt, without a frown or hesitance, thanks! The PlaceOpposite infamous Vietnamese Restaurant Nha Trang, right in central on Wellington Street, off the Midlevels escalator. The place is brand new and nicely designed, there are tables for you to sit down (rare in frozen yoghurt places) and chat. And at the entry they even have a little "photo booth" for you to take picture if you really get bored. The YoghurtRed Mango calls itself the "healthier" version of frozen Yoghurt. And indeed, I liked a lot because it wasn't as sweet as the "usual" places by far, you could even say the regular flavour is almost non sweet . Although you can choose sweeter fruit options like Strawberry, Peach, Green Tea, Mango and others for a higher price. You can choose 3 sizes although we found the small one (42HK$) already enough for a regular desert and the regular (45HK$)one almost too big.Besides the normal froyo cups that you will fill with your own choices, they offer approx 6 creations very similar to the Smile ones (48HK$).The ToppingsStaying their direction of "healthier brand" true you have a great choice of really fresh fruits, I was especially delighted to find fresh blackberries and raspberries (not those mushy old ones, but crispy fresh).Besides the fruits you have of course the regular sweet toppings like M&Ms, mochi, chocolate etc. And my alltime favorite "Cheesecake"! Gotta try it!OthersRed mango sells also Sandwiches, Wraps etc, but we haven't tried those yet.…Read More

Quick follow up on my previous Review, I came back today for a Philly Cheese Steak and a Vanilla Milkshake! The Vanilla Milkshake:Texture was fine, strong Vanilla flavour, although not creamy enough, and almost like a normal flavoured milk from Wellcome, no thickness at all. I had the Chocolate Lovers milkshake before and it is much stronger in flavour. The worst part today, was that my cup was handed over only 80% filled. I usually dont make a fuzz about these things, but if I pay 38HK$ for a milkshake, and the portion is the size of a Coke Can, well, then I do! I did not complain, because I like the place and usually its all good, but they should make sure their portions don't vary too much, this was kind of disappointing. The Philly CheesesteakThe bun was unfortunately soggy by the huge amount of oil and sauce, which has it good and bad sides. It means theres a lot of filling (which it was), but it also means the texture of the bun with not too mouth watering. You will get a huge amount of beef strips and onion with their cheese sauce, it's a calories bomb, but nice once in a life :)…Read More

Gwailoguru Rating: 4/10 (Vietnamese)*In One Simple Sentence:*Once perfect Viet Place, going downhill since last year, some food still good*Insider Tip:*The Pandan Leaf wrapped Beef and the Tomato PhoVisiting Details:Cuisine: VietnameseFood rating: 6/10Service: 3/10Ambiance: 5/10Price: HK$150 paxServing Tab Water/Tea: Yes-NoEnglish Menu: YesWhat we really liked:As usual the Pandan Leaf wrapped Beef, the softshell crab spring rolls and the Phos are very goodAnd what not:The service personnel was amazingly rude today, the overall quality of the food has decreased since our first visit 4 years ago Summary:ServiceHoly!! If we wouldn't have had half our orders served already, the 6 of us would have walked back out straight away. It all went fine until one of our orders was wrong, no big deal usually, we've learned in the last 5 years that the language barrier especially with the personnel sometimes can lead to misunderstandings, but usually those are clarified quick and in a normal manner. So what happened? We ordered our all time favourite "Pandan Beef", and the waiter understood "Pepper Beef", no biggy, when he came with the wrong dish we clarified and thought all good, however, 2 seconds later he simply places the dish on our table, tells us we ordered it, he is not wrong, and left. We all sat at out table like this O___O. So we asked him to please take the dish next time he passed, but he started accusing us of ordering wrong and pretty much started an argument in the middle of Nha Trang, scolding us for our mistake, he was very persistent on the fact that it was OUR mistake and he was right. By then the whole restaurant was looking to our table because he was talking so loud, we were stunned as we never gotten approached by a waiter in such a manner, we just wanted to enjoy the evening as usual (we are regulars at Nha Trang since 4 years), so to just get it over with we complied, but he still continued to talk loud as us, on how to proper order, walking away (finally) still swearing at us.The PlaceNha Trang is a long established Vietnamese Restaurant in the heart of Central between LKF and Soho, it draws big crowds and you have to be prepared to wait up to 30mins, they wont let you to your table until your whole group is present, means you cant chop a table and hold it until everyone arrives. The interior is bright and we like the big windows to the street. However eating at the long tables (not the regular ones) can be disturbing as they cramp as many people on it as possible, personal space = 0.The FoodThe Food is Vietnamese but with a European twist, making it easier for the many Caucasians (including me) to order, A lot of fried dishes and very meat centered. The drinks are not Vietnamese at all (even if it says so). The coffee used to be good but I got it served tasting burned twice in a row now.PhosWe usually order at least two Phos when we eat in here, because their broth is usually very flavourful and tasty. Same this time. If you go with the Beef and the Tomato Pho you cant go wrong much. Just share with your party of friends.Soft Shell RollGood, another item we always order, comes fresh and with great flavours.Papaya Salad with Pork NeckUsed to be one of our favourites, but this time the salad itself wasn't really crisp any more, the pork neck was ok quality, although not the best one either, will probably pass this dish the next timeStuffed Squid and Fried Spring RollBoth ok, but average, however decently priced you cant do much wrong here.…Read More

There was no apparent "theme" visual in the venue, but you will find wine bottles stacked against the wall and some other elements that are supposed to give you the "European" Flair. The FoodOh dear. So where it started off very well with the Oysters being freshly served, fast response time of the service personal, and good crab cakes, garlic bread and other starters, it went downhill when our mains arrived. The OystersYou have a big menu with the available choices, and surprisingly you wont find a single Oyster below 50HK$ on the menu. Now thats steap, especially for a place like this. luckily they have 1-for-1 promotions which shifts the "average" Oyster price back into the normal price segment. The oysters itself are fresh with good taste. nothing to complain here.Crab Cake / Mushroom / Truffle RavioliNicely presented with a good taste, all of the starters were Ok, I liked the strong truffle taste of the ravioli and the crunchy garlic bread. The Crab Cake was ok, although not fresh enough in its flavour for my liking. Overall the starters were all fine, priced between 98Hk$ and 168HK$ still not cheap for sure.Steak (400HK$)A desaster! I consider myself a steak lover, having my prime ribs at least 1-2 times a week, I've eaten myself through all major Steak houses and half of Argentina, so when the steak arrived in front of me tonight, i thought it was pork chop and claimed "wrong order". Unfortunately the tiny, oily and flavourless piece of meat turned out to be the steak, the most expensive item on the menu. Now don't get me wrong, this wasn't just a bad steak, this was the rock bottom of all steaks, the snooky steak of Hollywood Glamour, the fake rolex steak, the "dont leave me on the sidewalk not even the rats would touch this steak". Approx 2cm thick i dont think you can even call this steak! Are there any minimum measures? Anyways, to sum it up, it was hilarious and my backup option steak from wellcome is 10 times better (and bigger) than this was.Fish (310HK$)And it continues, the fish was equally bad, no taste (forgot the seasoning?), no special texture and worst of all, so oily, my mouth was coated with oil still, even after we had desert. On the "oily" note, all dishes had much to much oil, it was a single fork-knife oil wrestling match on my plate.Lamb RackYes, it was actually good, a decent portion, the meat was just right cooked, and the taste was nice too. If we would only all had ordered lamb rack. Oh well.PastasWe had 2 Pastas. The Fois Gras and the Shrimp one. The Fois Gras one was nice and my favourite besides the Lamb Rack, the shrimp one was lagging any flavour. Unfortunately both Pastas were either cooked in Oil instead of Water or someone played a bit too much with the oil dispenser afterwards, any ways, amazingly too much oil!TiramisuNice, a big piece, totally unexpected following our tiny main dish portions. And the flavour and texture was good too. The ladyfingers nicely soaked and the crème not too heavy, just right. I believe we were talking so loud about how we have to go to McDonalds afterwards to fill up our stomachs, they felt sorry and brought us an extra big piece.…Read More
