MSG heaven
Butao Ramen
2010-11-12
tried the original, spicy, also the squid versionspicy one was better; squid version was a little too salty. pork was extremely tender. brooth was quite greasy, and very heavy in flavour due to its super heavy use of MSGi was super thirsty as soon as after I finished service was prompt. due to its very limited space and ever long queue, you have to leave as soon as you finishwould not recommend and would not visit again. extremely expensive for a bowl of MSG…Read More

Tsui Hang Village (New World Tower)

thanks to its location i come here pretty often for dim sum and dinneri must say their dinner menu is much better than their dim sum menu, which needless to say is quite limited (this has been raised by a number of reviewers already)always have char siu or char siu bao (barbequed pork / barbequed pork buns) whenever we eat there as its 1 of their must-have. v consistent (good) quality, rarely disappointedCentral price, very attentice service in general but can depends on how busy the restaurant is will recommend (esp for family gatherings) but if you are here for a quick bite with colleagues or romantic eat-outs then this place may not suit…Read More

MAXIM'S PALACE (Luk Yeung Galleria)
2010-07-29
was here for a family dinner last week and we (esp my mum who has slight allergy to MSG) were pleasantly surprised the restaurant was quite packed when we arrived (sunday evening) and although we didn't book a table, they got us a table almost immediately.the service was very attentive, the managers and a few other staff had been very helpful in recommending the right dishes which were suitable for us (old people with dietary requirements and fussy children). our food arrived pretty late and when we enquired, they were all very apologetic (had a banquet upstairs) and kept us posted how long the next dish would arrive.food was pretty good (we ordered very 'homely' dishes). my mum was happy as she said they werent heavy MSG-userwould go back again and would recommend if you are in the area and want some decent quality cantonese food…Read More

The Stoep Restaurant

Food: selection was ok. they all arrived pretty quickly. the beef (though ordered as medium rare) was way overcooked that we thought we were chewing some rubber meat.you can't go wrong with salad. dessert was interesting but nothing special.Service: bad. you waved at them and they pretended that they didn't see you. they either went back to the kitchen or turned their heads away. we had to shout a few times to catch their attention. also we had to asked different staff quite a few times to order our drinks Luckily the view was great- it was a quiet evening with no rain and not humid at all. saw lots of cows resting on the beach as well!in summary, there is nothing special about this place, food was ok, service was non existent. not worth going there all the way NB: as the ladies was occupied i had to use the gents, which was tiny AND dirty. i am quite small (female, UK size 6 FYI) and still found it hard to turn. i don't know how any average sized gents can squeeze betwen that tiny space between the door and the urinal!…Read More

SiChuan Da Ping Huo

to be honest, if you are into very authentic AND spicy food, you may be disappointed (Yunyan at Miramar Shopping Centre / TST is the place to go) as the chef (wife) has toned down the spicy level a littlebut I like the way she has a non spicy dish followed by a spicy dish, to allow our numb tastebud to cool down a little; plus give the non spicy takers a chance to try other si chuan dishes which you may not order in other si chuan restaurants.portions were ok, just enough for our table so not much was wasted. my fav was ma po tofu- the tofu was as smooth as silk and the 'ma la' was just right. not sure if she put any meat in it though...the decor was very sleek, and the service was extremely good. both the owner (husband) and the young waiters were always at hand to explain what the dishes were (in both Chinese and English).best thing about it she didnt use much MSG, and the dishes (in general) weren't too greasy! will go again. highly recommended for a si-chuan 'beginner'!…Read More

Lee Kam Kee Vietnamese Restaurant
2010-05-31
came here for a family dinner on sunday eveninggiven its location I am pretty surprised to see that it wasn't full at all...we ordered a raw beef soup noodles, sour fish soup (sorry i don't know the titles in english!), some veg, pork neck, beef pho... and few other dishesand we couldn't finish them, as the portions were pretty massive even for hk standard (think wagamama / busaba soup noodles bowls but slightly bigger and stuffed with more food)the raw beef noodles soup was excellent- so much better than the one we had at a certain famous Vietnamese restaurant in CWB / Airport! pork neck was pretty tender. personally i like the sour fish soup v much but it could taste a little dull for mostthe service was ok. the owner was very attentive but the rest weren't so...very good value i think. will come again to try other dishes includ the vietnamese coffee …Read More

Koh Thai
2010-05-31
After a few drinks nearby we were all dying for food and thought we should give Koh Thai a try ordered Phad Thai, Tom Yum Kong (schrimp), green curry and vegPhad Thai was just .... horrible. all i could taste was ketchup Tom Yum was absolutely tasteless. worst i've had in years (worse than alot of places in the UK)green curry was ok. passable.the service was ok. we sat upstairs and although it was a quiet evening with only 3 tables including ourselves, they made a mistake on our order but changed it quickly. in short, will not eat in this restaurant again and will not recommend.nice decor, won't mind sitting downstairs for a quick drink though…Read More

HungryHun Was there for drinks last night, one friend came late and I tried to order a drink for her, a lady came up with her unfriendly attitude and facial expression took our order. My friends & I are very upset with her service so I asked if I could speak to the manager, the same lady came and said that she is the manager there. We complained to her that we think her attitude wasn't nice and sounded so mean & unpolite, she replied us with the same "I don't give a fxxk" attitude saying that because we're not polite to her....??????Of course she didn't apologize to us, and walked away with her horrible & discriminated attitude.今時今日,咁gei 服務態度點得gar???We were sitting near the entrance and saw her given her friendly smile and name card to caucasion who walked by. Maybe local Chinese aren't the exact target customers to her & the shop, but we're all Asian and she should pay us the locals with the same respect!!!!!

Minatsuki HungryHun> I know exactly which Manager whom you are talking about. That woman is absolutely ridiculous! I went there for lunch with my colleagues last time, not only that they made us wait for ONE HOUR for the starter to arrive,
2013-08-01
Minatsuki they mixed up our orders, wrong calculations and overcharged us... and that Manager woman took 15mins to do a simple primary level calculation… And... the worst thing was... she SCREAMED AT US, POINTING HER FINGER AT US!
2013-08-01
Minatsuki This is totally unacceptable and unprofessional... It has been over a year and I still have that woman's face in my mind... how she screamed at us. It truly gave me a really bad experience and I am not willing to step into that restaurant again....

Minatsuki Sorry for breaking this into so many messages... for some reasons Openrice doesn't let me post the entire message in 1 post... -__-"

localised western cuisine
SML

food-after hearing recommendations by friends i had great expectations -- yet again i was quite disappointed. the mushroom risotto and the seafood linguine were tasteless. the pork salad dish was... interesting. a good fusion of east x west perhaps....? decent western food in hk standardservice-it was very very busy (sat night) so they did try to cater for all our demands promptly.also politely kicked us out when the second run has arrived. not sure why the manager / senior waiter person (politely) suggested the 4 of us to sit on the bar table as it would be difficult to talk... decor- good v sleek, reminded me of wagamama but betterclean toilets (v important). but they really should put a warning sign outside the ladies as i nearly tripped over by the step as soon as i opened the door!overall-not sure if i will recommend, but if i am desperate and in the area, i may consider visiting the place again.booking in advance is highly recommendedi guess, unless one is willing to pay, western cuisine in hk is just not good. of course, same goes for decent chinese / asian cuisine outside china / asia!! …Read More

Nha Trang Vietnamese Cuisine (Harbour City)

had a long lunch with a friend who worked nearby last weekwe ordered the raw beef pho, a spicy (seafood?) pho and a few other salads (sorry forgot exact names..)i was not impressed by the soup (for both dishes), but the salad was okoverall the dishes are too overpriced for the sort of quality they offer. not sure if i will visit again as the raw beef pho should be the most basic dish of all that if they can't do this right, i have v little faith with the rest ...would not recommendv nice decor though …Read More

good and attentice service. patiently explained the differences between all the cakes on display (first timer, plus i've always been v skeptical about western patisserie in HK)i wanted a cake that is quite summery and not too heavy after a korean bbq dinner. and as per their suggestion i ordered the mango moose. alas i was pleasantly surprised how light and summery it was. all the girls loved it.will definitely go back to try the rest very soon!…Read More

service-excellent service, the couple (who runs the restaurant) are always always around (because the restaurant is never really full...? ) and are very helpful. food-visited this place a few times for both lunch and dinner, and food has always been pretty consistent. can make it extra spicy if requided. good tum yum, pad thai, fish (forgot exact name).... abit disappointed with their pineapple rice (not the pineapple seafood rice) though…Read More

service-excellent and prompt service. they got us a table v quickly even though the restaurant was pretty busy when we arrivedfood-abit disappointed. nothing too special nor tasty. the beef was quite tough. tried their brunch salad hk$108 - (which i sincerely hope is not their signature dish) - it was ok. . environment-abit too crowded which reminded me alot of the dim sum places... might be better if they have big sofas near the windowoverall-i'd say its good value for the area also for HK standard (food-wise). definitely below average for me though!…Read More
