Tastes and looks good!
Kim's Bowl (遠東金融中心)
2019-09-21
Overall verdict: Kim's Bowl is a really good lunch option, especially if you work in the Admiralty area. It's a kiosk style restaurant that serves tasty and nicely presented Korean food.I came here with my colleague and we ordered the following: 1. 韓式傳統拌飯 Beef Bibimbap 2. 韓式便當🍱 Kimchi pork lunch box set 3. 柚子 Yuzu and 青橘子 kumquat drinkThe food was served fast, nicely packaged with minimal waiting time. The food was packaged nicely so that when we got back to our desks it still was well presented like this 👇The beef rice came with a separate pack of gochujang (Korean chili paste sauce) so that we could control the degree of spiciness. There were plenty of toppings and meat with the rice. The food was aromatic and fresh. The pork kimchi lunch set came with many side dishes which made for an interesting lunch! The different sides contained sweet, salty, and spicy flavours which kept my taste buds entertained. The rice was lightly seasoned with sesame seeds and went well with the spicy pork. I must say the pork was much spicier than I thought it would be! I also enjoyed the marinated quail eggs and japchae (vegetable glass noodle). The cold yuzu drink was a bit sweet for me but perfect for a hot day and the sweetness helped to balance out the spiciness of the pork. Kim's bowl is a good place to go for a tasty lunch. The kitchen and serving station is clean and they have a variety of lunch sets and rice bowls that are much more generous in the portion of toppings compared with other Korean takeout joints near admiralty. The even have a nice selection of Kimbap! The staff were also friendly and helpful with answering my questions about the food.I would recommend you give this place a try! Especially if you worm around admiralty …Read More

Worth a try 😎
Tokyo Taishuu Sakaba
2019-07-28
Overall verdict: Good atmosphere and friendly staff. Price is in the high side for Tai Kok Tsui restaurants but reasonable for the quality. Worth a try. The crab meat served with potato chips was the highlight. It was.a creatively tasty dish and the crab meat was fresh and not fishy. All the seafood dishes we had were very fresh I including the sea snails and spicy squid. We also had beef tongue, chicken kidney skewers and udon noodle but I did not find it to be overly special. They have a big selection of Japanese izakaya style alcoholic drinks and a good happy hour before 8pm. We had a highball and 700ml Suntory beer. …Read More

Try the signature cheese cake!
Chez Shibata
2019-07-16
Chez Shibata is a cute little cafe on Stanley Street just at the beginning of the mid-level escalators. It's one of those hidden little places that I must have walked past hundreds of times but never realised. It was the perfect location for a catch-up with my friend on Saturday. The seating area was spacious and not too crowded and provided a nice environment without  having to go up to mid-levels in the heat. What we ordered:1. Signature Chez Shibata Cheesecake2. Maple Mont Blanc3. Americano coffeeThe interior decor and layout is soft and japanese-like. The tables are big and not too close together so you can have your privacy during your meal/conversation.There was a selection of beautiful cakes. The selection was quite large with small cake options as well as larger ones that are good for birthdays. The coffee was brought over very quickly. We did not have to wait at all. The cakes are all beautifully presented and as you can see here, very photogenic. There was not one flaw - similar to the cake shops that you see in Tokyo. The cheese cake was my favourite. I was so surprised about how well balanced this cake was! Not too sweet but also not bland. The cheese cake was mixed well and had an airy yet creamy texture. The raspberries on the top were super fresh! The base is buttery with a nutty after taste. This cake complimented our coffees very well.Similar to the cheese cake the Maple Mont Blanc was beautifully presented. Although the whole dessert is very creamy, it was airy and not overbearing. The little cubes are maple biscuits which added a nice touch to break the creaminess of the dessert. Even the inside was made with precision. I would have preferred if there was more of a maple or chestnut taste. The coffee was a good temperature. Not too acidic and not too bitter for the sweet dessert. This complimented the cheese cake very well. I think Chez Shibata is a nice place to go for a catch-up or a nice place to relax and get some peace and quiet on your own. It's great that it although it the restaurant is so close to the main streets of Central, it still provides a little sanctuary for some peace and quiet... and cakes of course!…Read More

Winner winner!
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner
2019-07-10
Overall Verdict: I love this place! This is my go-to for a calorie, splurging, late night feast. The environment relaxed, tables are big and the chicke hot pot is super tasty and the portions are big. What we ordered:1. All you can eat chicken hot pot (first flavour on the menu) - $298 after 9:30PM on weekendsTimer to let you know when your chicken hot pot is done and you can start eating. I wish you guys could smell these photos! This was the first flavour on the menu (the original chicken pot flavour - lots of onion and lots of parsley). I always order the "small" degree of spicy and it's perfect. The heat of the stove amplifies the spiciness so I usually size down on the chili. After you finish your chicken, you can ask the staff to fill your pot with soup and begin the hotpot segment of your meal. The leftover ingredients from the chicken makes the soup much more flavourful than a regular hotpot.  Below is a combination of ingredients you can order for the hotpot. The meal includes unlimited orders! This is the pork but there is a big selection of meats that you can choose. The beef, fish and squid balls have a really good texture and a bounce to their bite. They're quite large and filling though so I always forget and over order.Crispy fish skin is really crisp and crunchy. Super satisfying. There is a station where you can grab your own vegetables, drinks and sauces for the hotpot. There's a really large selection of fresh veggies. The service is good here and the staff are always helpful to give recommendations and suggestions. We barely have to ask for service as they are always one step ahead. This is a big plus for me …Read More

Good Japanese with large variety!
Sansen Japanese Bar and Restaurant
2019-07-04
Sansen is located very close to Hysan Place is a nice restaurant to escape the hustle and bustle of Causewaybay. The restaurant is accessible via a street front entrance. The thatched booths and timber walls are a nice touch and gives the restaurant a distinct, bohemian-Japanese vibe. What we ordered:1. Sukiyaki beef2. Udon w/hotpot3. Golden squid sushi4. yellowtail sushiSince it was a hot day we decided to start with sushi. I was surprised at the large portions of fish. This was definitely value for money 👍 The yellowtail was fresh and sweet making every bite delightful. The seaweed sheet surrounding the golden squid was also fresh and crisp The Sukiyaki contained beef, tofu, clear noodle and a mix of veges including enoki mushroom. I really enjoyed this dish as the broth was sweet and came out steaming. This dish also included a bowl of Japanese steamed rice. Tasted very similar to Sukiyaki that I had in Japan. I really enjoyed the udon noodle in this dish. The texture and appearance is similar to the hand drawn udon you get in Japan. It is not too thick, smooth and has slight bounce to the chewiness. As can be seen in the photos fillings are generous in the hotpot! The fried strip under the sprouts is a tempera prawn The vegetables in both Sukiyaki and udon hotpot were very fresh and absorbed the flavour of the soup, making them very tasty. The restaurant is on basement level and easily accessible from B exit of cwb station. Overall we spent around $340 for everything. This is not bad considering we had two full sized hotpots, rice, and four sushi. The portions were big enough to keep us full for the rest of the day…Read More

Value for money breakfast set
Zakka
2019-07-01
Overall verdict: Zakka has a nice atmosphere. The place restaurant is open, has good natural light, and an outdoor dining area. The breakfast set is also value for money.Taro and I each had a breakfast set. I had the baked beans, bacon sausage and egg and taro had the chicken steak and bacon set. Each set comes with a latte/cupaccino/black coffee. The scrambled eggs were very creamy and went really well with the rest of the meats and baked beans. I especially liked the mini pork and herb sausage. The chicken steak was also tasty but a little too oily for my liking. I preferred the sausage and baked beans set.The restaurant is clean and has an open kitchen. because it is in an open area next to the entrance of Olympian City it can get a bit hot. We sat in the back near the aircon vent so it was ok. Other than this, the atmosphere here is great.…Read More

Good dessert!
Tarone
2019-07-01
Overall verdict: I really enjoyed the Taiwanese style dessert here. It's not overly sweet, yet still very satisfying. What we ordered: 1. Grass jelly with taro paste, assorted mochi, barley and tapioca pearl2. Mango and pomelo with assorted mochi The grass jelly with taro paste was my favourite of the two. All the ingredients were fresh and there was a variety of different mochi balls (I think these might be handmade in store). They also threw in some black sesame filled 湯圓. Yum The mango soup was not as thick as I would have liked but none-the-less good for cooling down in the hot HK summer. Both were nicely presented, tasty and very satisfying. I will be back to try their souffle pancakes.…Read More

Delicious, value for money Rice with Roasted Eel!
Kane Tsuru Ramen (Hollywood Road)
2019-06-30
I usually come to Kane Tsuru for the amazing ramen. Feeling adventurous this weekend, Taro and I wanted to try some new items on the menu in addition to my usual favourites. It was also fitting that the restaurant was debuting their new yakitori (Japanese grilled skewers) menu. What we ordered:1. Kane Tsuru Chicken White Soup Ramen (signature, never fail dish)2. Rice with Roasted Eel3. Chicken Kidney grilled skewer4. Sapporo draft beerFirstly it was a crazy hot day so the beer was fantastic! It was even better there happened to be a buy 1 get 1 free promotion that day!The Kana Tsuru chicken white soup ramen is a cult favourite! The chicken is smooth, the pork is flavour packed and the fried burdock root is something special that I rarely see served in Hong Kong. The fried burdock root is best eaten fresh and out of the soup so it stays crunchy. The chicken is so smooth and the soup is thick but not oily. The white onion garnish goes perfectly with the pork. I always like to eat the Japanese style egg last. The chicken kidney was very well seasoned and not too salty. The meat was fresh and had a good crunch! The rice with roasted eel was presented beautifully.  The dish came with eel soup and a side of wasabi octopus. The eel was really delicious and the portion was huge! This was definitely enough for two people. The roasted flavour was present throughout the slightly seared eel which made the dish delicious! The bed of rice was also lightly seasoned with eel sauce and sprinkled with sesame which made every mouthful super flavourful. The soup and the octopus wasabi complimented the strong flavour of the eel. We were impressed by the yakitori so next time we will try more of these. Skewers with a pint of beer is perfect for the hot Hong Kong weather!…Read More

Try the dry chilli pan mein!
Kopitiam Makan Makan
2019-06-22
Overall verdict: tasty food, value for money. We ordered:1. Buh Kuh Teh (one man combo)2. Fried buns3. Dry Chilli Pan Mein4. Boiled squid5. Curry chicken lo meinThe soup in the Buh Kuh Teh tastes exactly like the ones I had in Malaysia. The one man combo includes generous helpings of ingredients pork, tofu, chicken feet and etc. This is a good dish to start on and cut through the oil if you are having some heavier dishes too.The fried man tou buns are my favourite. They're fresh out of the dryer so crispy on the outside but not soggy on the inside. This was the first time I tried a dish like the dry chili pan mein. It was fantastic! The mix of ingredients was packed with flavour and the thickness and texture of the noodle was perfect to pick up the chili, egg, minced meat mixture. The dry chilli is served on the side so you can adjust the spicy level to your liking. The boiled squid didnt do it for me. I thought it was a bit flavourless and lacked any texture. The curry chicken in the curry chicken lo mein was great but the thick noodle did not pick up the curry flavour very well. Perhaps the soup noodle would have been better. The food was all very tasty, similar to Kopitiam bagus bagus in sham shui po. I think this place is definitely value for money for the great taste.…Read More

Kinson Burger & Bar
2019-06-17
Since the weather was so lovely this day we were looking for a non-fussy place to have a meal outdoors. Kinson had reasonable prices for their burgers and fries (about $68) and was a easy going place to enjoy the sunshine and summer breeze.Taro had the Mexican cheese burger. The minced beef Patty used fresh meat and was cooked to medium. I was a bit skeptical about the level of rawness of the meat but when I tried it, it was very fresh. The fries were also hot and crunchy. I had the fish finger burger which was delicious! This comes with tartar sauce, lettuce and tomato. The vegetables were crispy and fish fingers were not too oily. The burgers went really well with a pint of Asahi. The service was fast and the setting that day was very relaxing. Would find another day to come again.…Read More

Easy Vietnamese lunch
North Viet Pho
2019-06-15
Overall verdict: good place for a quick, tasty lunch. What we ordered:1. chicken and Vietnamese sausage noodle soup2. crab roe and Vietnamese sausage vermicelli in tomato soup3. coconut ice jelly drink and ice lemon teaThis North Viet Pho branch has generously portioned noodle soups for the price. I can barely finish the whole bowl Everytime. This is a good place to grab a quick lunch or dinner with no fuss.On this occasion I had the chicken and Vietnamese sausage noodle soup with pho. there was a lot of chicken in this and the soup was well seasoned. Lots of flavour but not too salty and I really like the taste of the fresh onion with the soup. The noodles came with a side of chili and lime to add to my liking. Taro had the the crab roe and Vietnamese sausage vermicelli in tomato soup. The soup base has a very strong seafood flavour - like the other dish, it was seasoned well and not too salty. He always orders this so it must be good! The coconut ice jelly drink was super cold and refreshing for summer! it's mainly ice based so not too filling with the noodles. For the small restaurant, the place is well staffed and for the most part polite.…Read More

Shum Shum Desserts
2019-06-15
Everytime I go to Sham Shui Po I will come to this dessert shop. It has that 50s HK Nostalgia decor, is clean and has friendly staff. I've tried a lot of their desserts but my favourite is the tofu pudding with mixed toppings and ice cream. The dessert is the perfect amount of sweetness without being overbearing, smooth and fresh. With the ice cream it is so good for the summer season! The staff here are always super friendly and I like that there is no minimum charge - you don't feel rushed to finish your food. The desserts are very reasonably priced too! Definitely worth a try …Read More

Wholesome dinner options
Locofama
2019-06-13
Overall verdict: Nice dinner atmosphere with tasty yet wholesome dinner options. What we ordered:1. Baked tofu fama bowl2. Coconut chicken with quinoa and cauliflower rice3. Signature apple crumble cheesecakeI really enjoyed the baked tofu fama bowl! This is a really good option for a healthy dinner. My only comment would be the vinegarette type dressing was a bit too light for the tofu. This may have gone better with a sesame/Asian dressing. The coconut sauce for the chicken was delicious and well seasoned. Though the chicken could have been cooked more tender, tastes wise I really enjoyed this dish. Being their signature, the apple crumble cheese cake was not too sweet and made for a good ending to the meal The staff there are always very friendly and the dim lighting and candles created a nice relaxed atmosphere. …Read More

Yummy food and good service!
Plato Cafe & Bistro (彌敦道)
2019-06-09
Overall verdict: Being located in the heart of Yau Ma Tei, Plato cafe is a good place to enjoy a nice meal and escape the busy crowds of the streets below. The set dinner comes with a main of your choice, soup, garlic bread and a selected drink. What we ordered:1. Softshell crab and truffle cream spaghetti2. BBQ baby pork back ribs with salad and fries1. The softshell crab and truffle cream spaghetti was my favourite! The dish came with a whole crab that was freshly fried. The crab was crispy and packed with flavour and also not too oily. The truffle spaghetti sauce was thick, rich and creamy and went really well with the softshell crab. I also used this as a dipping sauce for the fries that came with the next dish! 2. The BBQ baby pork back ribs was also a good choice. The ribs were covered in a sweet BBQ sauce and cooked well! The dish comes with generous portions and I really enjoyed the side of fries and lightly dressed salad that accompanied the ribs. For the portion of the dishes and the extra sides that come with each main, the dinner set is quite good value for money!I also liked that the restaurant had plenty of staff, which were also polite and attentive We were to full for dessert but decided to try an Oreo milk shake. This was perfect for a hot summer night. The milk shake had crushed ice and Oreo bits and was topped with cream. We wanted to share one but were fighting to finish this. For the portion of the dishes and the extra sides that come with each main, the dinner set is quite good value for money!I also liked that the restaurant had plenty of staff, which were also polite and attentive. Perfect fix to satisfy your pasta craving
Pici
2019-06-08
Overall verdict: The freshly made pastas at Pici are fantastic! For brunch we had the tasting menu $290 gets you 2 starters , 3 mains and 2 desserts. What we ordered:1. cold cuts selection2. tuna tartare3. Pici4. Tagliolini5. Daily special which was safron cream tangliatelle with mussels6. tiramisu7. panacottaThe starters come in generous portions. My favourite of the day would be the cold cut selection which came with chunks of parmesan cheese and soft cheese. The tuna was good too but nothing special. The tagliolini and pici pastas were fantastic! There was plenty of truffle on the tagliolini and the parmasen and cream ratio was spot on.The safron cream mussel tangliatelle was way too salty for us. We couldn't finish this and the kitchen offered to bring us another pasta. The tiramisu is super creamy and panacotta was very smooth. I always love the dessert here.…Read More
