A weekly visit
Thai In
2012-09-20
My wife and I are both expats (Canada and California) and this place has been filling our Thai cravings in HK for the past 6 months. We have tried the more expensive Thai places in Soho and honestly we prefer this place hands down. I'm not ashamed to say that we order from here almost weekly. By this point the owner (who delivers to us) knows us by voice! Super friendly guy.I thought it time to give this place some credit and quit keeping it as a secret gem of HK. We have a few favorites that we rotate through:Fried diced chicken with cashew - Onions, mushrooms, green bell pepper, chicken, cashews, and chilis stir fried. Pad Thai - Tastes like how pad thai should!Green Curry with vegetable - I was never a curry fan back home but now I'm hooked (at least on this one). Varies in spice level from week to week. Full of flavor. They don't skimp on the veggies either! Red Curry with vegetable - My wife's favorite, not as much kick as the greenYellow Curry with vegetable - I eat this when I'm sick. It's like a chicken soup when there is none...but not.Vegetable spring roll - StandardRoti Bread - A must get accessory with curryWhite Rice - Thai sticky rice, must have.Iced Coconut Milk - I like it...I almost feel bad that I probably have never tried anything else from this place. I just don't see a reason to yet since I still enjoy these dishes so much. Between 2 western adults we can share one dish and one curry with rice and roti and be completely full. Prices are around $58 for these dishes.…Read More

Inside and out this place is on point
Socialito

After a nice dinner inside on Monday I was back on Tuesday to dive into some taco's outside. Both days left me feeling impressed and I look forward to going back, to either the inside or outside. And, as a Southern Californian I am extremely happy to have found the best fish taco in HK.The food inside is very very good. It is fine dining Mexican food (almost feels weird to type that) at it's best. You can tell there is a lot of care put into each dish, visually and through taste. My favorites were the lobster and swordfish ceviche, foie gras tostada, and the pulled pork gorditas. Honorable mention, their chips and salsa were quite addicting. Lastly, the cocktails were really well done and packed a punch. The food outside takes a more "simple" approach. And, you can get a few of the inside dishes outside (thankfully this includes the pulled pork gorditas). My highlight was undoubtedly the fish taco, grilled swordfish with fried onions make for a very impressive flavor very reminiscent of fish tacos from back home in San Diego but fancier. The pork belly taco also stood out, as did their Margarita (strong and refreshing).Inside you get what you pay for. It is fine dining at it's best. Service is pretty good and I believe it will only get better as the restaurant gets comfortable.Outside the tacos and gorditas range from $80 to $120 and you get 2 of each. …Read More

Pork Chop King
For Kee Restaurant
2012-06-26
Timing is everything with this place. It can be packed with a line out the door during lunch or they can run out of dishes if you go too late. But, if you time it right then you are in for a treat. If you dine in prepare for the real local dining experience. Grab a seat at a small table with strangers, and hurry up and order. Their pork chops are the best I've had and can be eaten any time of the day. My preferred method of delivery is their Pork Chop Bun. It's a great value. Simple yet fresh tasting. And, don't let the size fool you. This thing is filling (and not in a healthy way). There non-pork chop dishes are good too. Beef with Greens on rice. Huge portion. Low price. Good taste.Lastly, their iced milk tea is perhaps my favorite in HK. …Read More

Maybe my favorite restaurant in HK
Shek O Chinese & Thai Restaurant
2012-06-26
My wife and I eat here at least once a month for date night / get out of the city trip. We bring all of our visitors here, who all love it. This place might be my favorite restaurant in HK. The atmosphere is so relaxed and reminiscent of my home in California. There is no rush. The prices are great . Beer is cheap. And the food, the food is delicious. I've yet to have anything that I did not like. Don't be afraid to just try something here, I'm confident it will taste great. The spicey-ness of the food works great on a hot day, or maybe it's the beer...Favorite dishesrawns in Red Curry with white sauce - Our favorite dish. Flavor packed, slightly spicey, messy. This with a side of white rice is gold.Fried Spicy Squid - Perfectly cooked with a side of salt and chilli'sMorning Glory (or Bok Choy) with Oyster Sauce - Tastes good, feels healthyPrawns with Chinese style broth - Heavy with peppercorn and Star Anise. If you like Pho you will like this flavor.Other great dishes:Fried frogs legs - My favorite frog styleFried Squid with Honey - Sweet alternativeFried Spicy Tofu - They aren't kidding about spicyGreen Curry with Vegetables - Spot on, building spice Steamed Crab - It's fresh and very well seasoned…Read More

Just OK
Donchan no okonomiyaki
2012-06-26
Overall, the food was ok. This was one of my favorite dishes in Tokyo...but I'm not in Tokyo. We had:1000mL Asahi - Never seen this big of a can so I was quite entertained :)Gyoza - Fresh made, thick, tastey Sweet Octopus - Well cooked to proper texture but too much sauce. Good for 2-3 bites.Pork Okonomiyaki - Overall, it was ok. There was however way too much Okonomiyaki sauce making it far to sweet (and I love sweet food). There was no other flavors present because of the excess of sauce. Maybe this overtly sweetness is for the HK palate, but my American palate wasn't entertained. The only way around this in HK it seems is to go somewhere to make it yourself. It's not a cheap meal but will leave you feeling content. I would want to consume this after a night of drinking or perhaps the next morning. It was ok, but for the price and flavor I won't be going back to this place for my Okonomiyaki fix. I also learned to bring friends to eat Okonomiyaki so I can try more than one style!…Read More

Great value, great taste, carona with lime!
Taco Chaca
2012-01-25
This place is brand new in Sai Ying Pun, open less than 2 weeks now, and deserves attention. The menu is simple and has real Mexican meat choices such as Carne Asada, Carnitas, and the Southern Californian staple Fish Taco. The prices are extremely well placed (40-65HK) for the quality of food. The menu has all the main options; Tacos, Burritos, Quesadillas, Enchiladas, Nachos, etc.I had a Carne Asada burrito my first time. The Carne Asada is well marinated and chopped. The burrito contains an entire meal inside including mexican rice, sour cream, cheese, onions, and refried beans wrapped in a big flour tortilla. It is delicious. Next time I may opt for the beans on the outside so I can get more of the Carne Asada's flavor in each bite. The onions used are sweet and flavorpacked. Plus, they have Tapatio hot sauce if you like to spice things up a bit (my favorite hot sauce).I have also now tried their Carnitas taco and their Chicken taco. The Carnitas taco came on a corn tortilla (as it should) with some of those onions again, and I can definitely give this a thumbs up for flavor. It can be consumed in 4 bites, but your order comes with 2! So, you aren't left without a second chance to enjoy. The chicken taco had a good flavor but with the other choices available (carne, carnitas, and fish) I don't see myself going for this one often. They serve Corona with a lime (if you ask nicely) which obviously compliments any of their dishes and is necessary to complete the experience. There are also shots of tequilla available if you want the complete mexican experience. This is not a restaurant, or a taco stand. It is something in between. It is pretty small inside but there are pleanty of seats and places to chomp away. This place is more of a place to drop in, grab a quick bite (quick and delicious), and be on your way. And I really like that. The owners are from Los Angeles, California. So, this is as close to classic So Cal mexican as Hong Kong has. Being from So Cal myself, I'm happy they opened and give it two thumbs up. I'll be there once a week minimum.…Read More

I almost do not want to leave a review because I don't want to share this place with others since it lessens my chance of getting a table! If you do choose to try to eat here, come very early (right as they open). Or, plan on waiting for about an hour for a seat in the street. Also, when you go here look at a menu before you sit so you can decide quickly what you want. The staff has no patience for slowness.:)I have been here twice and have yet to be dissapointed by anything. If you order quick and act decisive the staff will treat you nice and bring you things you order quickly. It is quite fun to watch them shew people away for not making a reservation or for taking too long to order. The non claypot rice dishes are great and come out fast and piping hot. Their Bok Choy is very tastey. Prepare to order 1 or 2 of these dishes depending on how many people you have with you since your claypot rice dish will take about 30-45 minutes to come out. When it comes out copy the locals in the restaurant on how they prepare it. When the bottom rice hardens dig it up to the top! It is quite an amazing taste and is not to be missed!Be prepared for Hong Kong attitude but embrace it and you will have a great time here! The prices are cheap for food and beer. And, the flavor is unlike anything else. Best had on a cold night.…Read More

I am new to Hong Kong and relatively un-experienced with Dim Sum. Over the years I have found dim sum to be unexciting for me and never found a dish I really liked. Until coming here. Now, I'm in love with Xiao Long Bao.I have been here twice in 1 month, and for good reason. The first time we (my wife and I) went around 8pm and waited for about 5 minutes. The second we went for lunch and there was no wait. The second time I ordered an entire set of Xiao Long Bao pork dumplings to myself. The hot and sour soup is also very good, especially with a little vinegar added. The greens can be a little bland but worth experimenting with since they are not expensive. The price is very well priced. Especially considering that you are eating at a Michelin rated world renowned establishment. The service is also exceptional, especially for Hong Kong.Would recommend to everyone to try at least once. And, please follow the instructions on the card at your table on how to prepare your Xiao Long Bao.…Read More

I was suggested this restaurant after expressing my craving for mexican food that I missed from home back in San Diego, California. And, was left upset for spending so much money on such bland non-mexican food.We went during happy hour so the drink prices were not bad. Though, they did not have Corona. Dos Equis sufficed. The location is across from what I assume was a strip club. So it was kind of fun to watch the drunk expats get suckered into going inside.Where I am from, chips and salsa are free with your meal (like bread at most restaurants). Here they were not free, and they were not cheap. The salsa had such little flavor that I had to pour hot sauce into it to give it any taste :( . The tortilla chips were OK, some were a bit greasy which was odd.We ordered the mixed meat Fajita and the steak burrito. They do not offer Carne Asada or Carnitas here, which was a surprise since these are standard requirements for a "Mexican" establishment. The Fajita was not bad, though nothing about it was mexican. And, just because you wrap up slices of steak in a flour tortilla then throw a glob of sour cream and flavorless guacamole on it does not qualify it as a burrito. The flavor of the food all in all was not bad. In fact some of it was flavorful enough. But, it was not Mexican food and not what I wanted to pay for. This also brings me to mention that between these 2 dishes, chips, and 2 beers our bill was around $600HK! Which is outrageous for mexican food. I will not be coming back here again.…Read More
