Not bad but over priced
rasupermen
2013-04-06
I was gonna eat at the food court in Hysan, but the trendy decor attracted me. The outside is decorated with superman like memorabilia and the place also has a mini photo machine that you can play with to edit pictures. The inside was a lot smaller than I thought, better for single diners or smaller parties. I sat in the middle at a long zig zag table. It was pretty cozy. The menu selection is small, which I appreciated but I ended up choosing an assorted spicy seafood ramen off their separate seasonal menu. The one thing I did notice is that they charge for everything. Most ramen places give you free tea, there's a charge for it here. Most ramen places also include condiments, none here either. The texture of the ramen was alright. It was cooked nicely. The broth was not too spicy either but I do have to say that it was definitely over seasoned. It was just too salty. Sometimes you can get away with it by being salty and rich. This broth not so much.My ramen also came with free dumplings. They were generic and cooked nicely. Nothing to write home about.Overall, I feel like you're paying for the novelty of the place more than actual food quality. Don't get me wrong, the food was alright, but it was just so average, there are cheaper places with the same quality. So average almost to the point of forgettable. …Read More

Nice little gem!
The Phoenix Bar & Kitchen
2013-04-03
I always find that the bars located not off the mid level escalators are the best and this place was no exception. I happened upon this place by accident because I was charmed by the atmosphere and the cute little deck out front. The uniqueness about this place is the menu. It's written daily on these wall chalkboards and changes according to what's fresh. It has a wide variety of courses, perfect for vegetarians and meat eaters. I ordered their bruschetta, fried camembert cheese, and fish & chips. Their bruschetta came on generous slices of french bread with different toppings. They had ones with salmon, prosciutto, and the traditional tomatoes. I loved the pesto that went with the prosciutto one! It was the perfect mix. The one I liked the least was the salmon one. It could have used a little bit of acid and less meat. The fried camembert cheese was amazing. It came with a reddish jam that accented the cheese perfectly.I was amazed at the freshness of their fish & chips. It was slightly underseasoned, but in a good way. You could taste that this wasn't something they fried from the freezer. Overall, the food is definitely worth trying. It also doesn't hurt that the bartender is a handsome young guy taking your order at the bar hahaCheers to fresh food!…Read More

More fusion than authentic
Nha Trang Vietnamese Cuisine
2013-04-01
I was the first to arrive in our party of three. The host said I could not sit at a table by myself if my party was incomplete. So instead she offered me the center island table, which seated about 10 people. In typical HK fashion, lots of people shared this long table. No big problem if you aren't looking for personal space. Very cozy.We ordered basically one thing from each flap of the menu. Including their spring rolls, paper rolls (shrimp and some other sort of fish), pho, Com Tam Suon Bi Cha, and chao tom.The presentation was very well done. All the food was pretty. The portions were more than enough. Now for the taste. The food is so westernized that it's to the point where it's almost considered fusion food. No authentic flavors at all and also don't even bother ordering in Vietnamese, most of the waitresses will just ignore you. The only picture I have is of the shrimp paper rolls. It's the first choice on their paper rolls menu. They included peanuts inside the rolls which gave it an odd crunch texture. Normally paper rolls come with a peanut sauce. They only provided nuoc mam. Also I really like to eat pickled carrots and daikon, theirs was soggy and not sour enough. I forgot to take pictures of everything else we ate because we dug in right away, but overall if you're looking for a more modernized and western take of Vietnamese food, I'd recommend this place, but if you're after the more authentic flavors, I'd say pass. …Read More

Pricey but worth a try
Ruth's Chris Steak House
2013-03-19
Personally, I am on a quest to try all the steak houses in HK and this was a perfect stop for a business dinner. Two birds with one stone right? We made reservations for our party of 12 beforehand. We were seated right away in their "party" room. I do believe there is a minimum for using this room, but I can't recall what it is.They offer a variety of steaks, seafood, and other courses. The menu is written in English, but the server was very adapt at explaining the menu in Chinese as well. I also ordered a Caesar salad along with my meal. The romaine was chilled nicely, but the dressing was lacking. It was more like a sour cream based dressing instead of a tangy vinaigrette. Not bad though.I ordered a ribeye, cooked rare. The steak was beautifully cooked and rare all the way through. It was juicy and the seasoning was perfect. *note* The steaks come on a sizzling plate, so if you want your steak cooked perfect, I recommend ordering a little more rare.We also ordered an entire table of sides (Creamed Spinach, Baby Spinach, Mashed Potatoes, Fries, Potatoes au Gratin). The portions were just right with plenty of leftovers. I was too stuffed for desert, but the waiters bring a sample tray of it for you to look at before ordering.Overall, I like the atmosphere and the taste of the food. The waiters were more than accommodating and my wine glass was never empty. The place is a bit pricey so it's not an everyday restaurant. Also, I would say the portions are fairly large (more western sized) compared to what most people are used to eating daily. …Read More

So average it hurts
La Pampa Argentinian Steak House
2013-03-02
Let's start off by saying I really appreciated the staff. I don't mean the service while I was at the table, but I mean the hostess who was gracious enough to give us a prime table during peak dinner hours WITHOUT a reservation. Oh yea, did I mention it was Friday night as well? The atmosphere was great. It's perfect for romantic dinners or even with close family members. If you do have trouble seeing in dim atmospheres, I recommend a flashlight app first We didn't order an appetizer, but a basket of bread was provided along with a sample of their steaks. The bread was fresh and plenty. Perfect to hold you over until the main course. At our table, we ordered two 250g tenderloins and one 250g sirloin. Let's start with the tenderloins which were ordered medium well. The seasoning was alright, but the cooking could use a little work. The steak was completely rare in the middle and inedible. The sirloin was ordered medium rare and cooked perfectly. The steak came out thick, juicy, but the texture was just plain awful. It was gummy and even with a steak knife, I found myself struggling to cut the meat. The seasoning was alright, but inconsistent. The middle of my steak was salter than the rest. The staff could use a little bit more friendliness. No one person asked me how my meal was or if I needed anything else. They took my order, brought the food, brought the bill, and said good bye. I'm not needy, but I would appreciate a smile or at least some care.Overall, I say this place is average for being recommended as a steak house and the menu only offers two types of steak (sirloin or tenderloin). I might return and try the chorizo, but definitely not the steaks again. …Read More
