Average place
Tamago-EN (Plaza Hollywood)
2021-11-15
Watching the long queues at this restaurant, we were curious about the dishes it served. Was the food really worth over an hour of waiting time ? Deciding to try it, we were surprised to be able to get in fairly quickly. A first look at the menu showed very typical ファミレス dishes comprised essentially of 3 ingredients: eggs, rice and meat. The initial feel we got from the shop was rather positive. A predominently Muji-styled clear wood layout with accents of interior garden; all centered around the egg theme. Nothing too eye catching but a comfortable place to relax while enjoying a meal. A somewhat polite waitress took our order: chicken curry omurice, katsudon (pork cutlet rice with egg) and a set of hashimaki. This is where the good experience stopped. When the food arrived, we were far from blow away by the quality or taste. Although the eggs were indeed fresh, the rest was below standard for that pricing. The Omurice was topped with chicken meat that was coarse and over cooked, and the curry was watered down to a level where the miso soup had a stronger aroma. The Katsudon had the usual soft to mushy piece of pork cutlet that most local wannabe Japanese restaurant serve but the egg was indeed fresher than the average place. The Hashimaki were just mini okonomiyaki rolled on a pair disposable chopsticks, meaning that they only tasted as good as the sauce used to top them. Overall, although this place brings a bit of novelty to the mall and the prices were standard for mall food, we found it to be a bit overhyped.:( …Read More

Not too bad
Toyo Katte Don
2021-07-22
I booked this place to celebrate the birthday of a friend and it turned out to be a bit better than what I expected.Although the description mentioned izakaya, this place is just another of these regular Japanese themed restaurants. In terms of food, Toyo Katte Don specializes in seafood, and if this is what you like then the range of selection is quite wide for a place of that size.We went for the standard set menu that had a bit of everything. Although none of the dishes was outstanding enough to create special memories, none was bad enough either that would discourage us from going there again. The service was great with attentive and reactive waiters. We didn't have to wait too long for our food to come. Although there is still a long way to go before reaching the level of service provided in Japan, this place is definitely above the hong kong average standards.Despite how crowded the location was, we didn't feel pressured into leaving or ordering more food, which is a good thing. Overall, if you want a place to hang out while eating and chatting with your friends, Toyo Katte Don is a restaurant you should give a try. …Read More

Great Value!
SUSHIRO (Tropicana Gardens)
2021-05-02
Over the past few years the quality of a certain popular sushi chain has decreased a lot. Between scandals and a decrease in quality and choices, it seems that the sushi scene in Hong Kong would be left with only low end quality at a cheap price, or overpriced sushis at a regular quality. Sushiro is a great alternative that manages to fit in the quality gap left open by some of the other major chains. The choice and quality there are absolutely great for the price they ask, and the ingredients are fresh.Being a chain, there will always be some inconsistency in the quality; and it is not uncommon to find poorly cut slices or loose rice. However, I have often seen similar quality for twice this price.Overall, this chain comes at the right time and I am already a big fan. Let's see how it fares over time! …Read More

貴+貨不對辦... not sure what the craze is about
Waki Shokudo (Temple Mall South)
2021-04-30
This place is one of your anything-goes Japanese themed restaurant.Although it has a huge variety of items on the menu, the overall quality varies based on the complexity of the dishes but you get a lot of variety that is worthy of an izakaya (minus the alcohol)The service was so-so with the waiters taking their sweet time to refill your tea. In addition, you are expected to bring your own napkins. For our dinner, we focused on Chirashi don and we were far from being amazed. For a hundred bucks you can expect a big serving of rice topped with rare bits of diced raw fish. If you were expecting the nice portions that are served at some other popular sushi chains during lunchtime, you're in for some disappointment. We also ordered some sea urchin which arrived on a wooden slab. Although the price was the same as most similar places, our share had several sections colored in a dubious tone, which might explain why we felt a bit unwell after our dinner. Although the place offers a nice selection that will please the younger generations, I personally find it a bit expensive for the food quality offered. Personally, I'll either avoid it, or avoid ordering seafood the next time. …Read More

A great place for vegans
POP vegan
2021-02-27
While meat is often an unavoidable component of our daily diets, it's sometimes good to skip it.We were attracted to this place by the promise of a meatless menu and the result wasn't disappointing.Pizza, salad, pasta, burgers, etc. You can find a lot of mainstream recipes at this place. While their salads are a bit on the expensive side, the other dishes were not excessively priced. We had a smoked "fish" salad and a vegan pizza followed by a selection of good desserts. Overall, the food was quite good although the vegan components were not trying to hide themselves. People who are used to real meat and real dairy products will immediately feel a difference, therefore you should not go there with the goal of fooling yourself into thinking that you are eating meat. Service was good and responsive, although I wish they proposed something special for birthday celebrations. For that last point, I suppose I should have confirmed by phone beforehand. If I had something to complain about, it would be the poor decoration. However it won't prevent you from enjoying a hearty meal. Overall this place is definitely a must-try for vegans and vegetarians. …Read More

Avoid this place...
Guts Soul Kamameshi (Amoy Plaza)
2021-02-27
We ordered 2 sets and a snack. While the grilled fish was ok, the katsudon was among the most disgusting ones I have ever had.The tonkatsu was mushy and soggy with barely any feeling of meat, and the sauce was so bland that it felt like water. Both dishes were served with overcooked mushy rice which only further emphasised the bad feeling we got.The deep fried banana felt more like deep fried mochi coated with an excessive amount of chocolate powder which prevented me from tasting anything else.Service was mediocre with unresponsive staff that didn't even serve any water and had to be called several times. If you like disgusting food, I can only recommend that you try this place. For me there won't be a second time. …Read More

Disappointing
Jollibee (Kwai Chung Plaza)
2020-10-24
I have been a fan of Jollibee for years. Their technique for frying chicken in a way thay achieves a perfect balance of crunchiness and moisture, without being soaked in oil, is something that has always enticed me to come back. The Kwai Chung Plaza outlet however seems to be a pale imitation that managed to produce something worse than everything I've had in fast food chains. The result: cold and dry chicken that isn't even crunchy...My advice, stick to the major locations such as Central and avoid this outlet... …Read More

Not the Best Place in Town
PAN de PAIN Pancake & Sweets (K11購物藝術館)
2020-07-13
This is your typical mall sweets shop that targets women. The place has a simple decoration with enough space for people to not feel too cramped. There is a minimum order of 1 item per person and even their standard drinks will cost the regular mall price of $40ish ($30 if you order an espresso).:(Taste and texture-wise, their soufflé is far from Shiawase no Pancake or Gram in Osaka, but they do a decent job as substitutes.Their hotcakes however were among some of the worst I had in Hong Kong...I wish they reduced the amount of salt by half... Overall, this restaurant is mostly a dating spot or a hangout place when you have a majority of female friends, but I cannot really recommend it. …Read More

Decent Japanese Buffet
Tianchi Japanese Buffet
2020-07-04
Tin Chi is your average Japanese Buffet and doesn't try to distinguish itself by proposing anything special. For the price of $140 (plus service charge ) we were given a 2h buffet with your regular selection of sashimi (i.e. Salmon & amberjack), sushi, hot and cold dishes, as well as all you can drink soft drinks. The food quality was on par with other buffets of that price range, and the tables are sufficiently big to accomodate your orders.Incidentally, you can also chose to upgrade for $88 and get draft beer, sake, and a couple of extra selections on their food menu such as maguro. The only downsides I encountered were a lack of choice in their basic sushi and sashimi menu and a higher tendency to miss orders than other Japanese buffets.Overall, within the price range of $150, this place provides decent value for money. If however you want more selection, it would be best to find another place. …Read More

"Mongolian" American Fast Food
Nomads
2020-07-04
We were lured to this place by memories of hearty lamb dishes and savoury dumplings that are so significant in Mongolian Cuisine.Instead, what we found was a total disappointment...Potato Salad, Cervelas sausages, deep fried fish fingers, vegetarian nems, and all you can eat pizza and fried noodle/rice...Although I understand that Mongolia has evolved, I wasn't expecting that we'd get American College Food for that price. The taste was ok, but it wasn't significantly better than your average Chinese takeaway from Manhatthan, and definitely not worth such price. If you go there for lunch, it might be a good place to pack on unhealthy fats and carbs, but if you are looking for some authenticity or a different dining experience, then you'd better turn around... …Read More

Good place with great food
Mr Brown
2020-01-13
I booked Mr Brown for Christmas eve, and despite a minor set-back, I had an enjoyable experience. The decoration is classy with an emphasis on dark tones, and gives the feel of an upper medium end restaurant overall. Although I was expecting a christmas menu (which disappeared mysteriously from their website), we had instead the sampler meal that gave us an idea of the food served at the restaurant. In the end, 10 different small dishes took us through a breathtaking journey of culinary discovery. From the empanada to the pork muffin, along the way with some sea bass, smoked beef brisket and finishing with a delicious cheesecake, the dishes will definitely give you satisfaction. The service was quite good also, and the waiters were not only attentive to our needs, but they would also introduce the dishes they were bringing. The only setback was that whatever note was left on the reservation was ignored, but this seems to be a common problem to most restaurants. Despite this, I am definitely recommending this place and will look forward to going there again. …Read More

Hungry Bird
2020-01-13
This place is one of these upstair restaurants that abund the Tsim Sha Tsui Area. The ambiance was dark and somewhat cramped as to be expected from most upstair restaurants. We had a small table with uncomfortable bar stools. We went there for drinks and ended up ordering quite a few different dishes. The beer selection is somewhat lacking (they only had 1664 and Asahi) and the food was ok but far from great. The price we paid however was however way too high for the type of food we were served, and I would have preferred an izakaya to the setting we were in. Also, please be aware that they seem to have a limit time after which they will (kindly ) ask you to vacate your seats and pay your bill. In all and for a, I'm not sure I will be back again. …Read More

Very good value for the price
Beerliner German Bar & Restaurant
2020-01-13
A very good place to enjoy German food at an affordable price. Although the decoration is somewhat standard, the environment was clean and cozy. The Pork knuckle and the sausages taste great, and the beer selection will delight even seasoned drinkers. The apple strudel was also quite good and makes a great complement to any meal. The service itself was good and the staff was attentive to our needs. This might have been because we arrived at an hour where very few customers were present, but it left us with a positive impression.Overall, we will definitely come back again. …Read More
