Happy all day breakfast
Happy Cafe
2024-03-31
I was looking for a quick bite to eat and stumbled on Happy Cafe. It was morning and I ordered the all day breakfast. The dish came with a huge cutlet of fish which was hot and crispy, mushroom scrambled eggs with truffle, a good portion of bake beans, a sausage, two strips of bacon, side salad, a mini pineapple bun and a hot drink. All this was $62! The breakfast portion is large with food ingredients, the HK style tea was strong. The only thing I would change next time is to swap the pineapple bun for toast. …Read More

Could be better
Big JJ Seafood Hotpot restaurant
2024-01-07
I was busy at work so I decided to order via a delivery app instead of eating out. On the app I stumbled across Big JJ, I have heard from friends that it's good for hotpot so I was eager to try out the food. I ordered the pork chop, friend eggs, soy and scallion sauce with rice. Visually the portion size is good, double eggs were running and generous amount of cut pork chop. As for the taste the pork chop was disappointing, it was lacking in flavor  and texture, the pork chop I assume left too long in cornflower which over softened the meat. However for the price it's passable but I will not be ordering this dish again. From experience the lunch menu is usually a cheaper offering than the night menu, and with Big JJ they are know for their hotpot so I will definitely be back in the evening for the their signature dishes. …Read More

Must order
The Foreign Correspondents' Club
2024-01-06
The FCC known for its Indian dishes I decided to order the Kadhi Chicken Biryani, a dish that I don't see very often in Hong Kong.  I didn't have to wait long for the dish to arrive, as expected it is served with a sliced boiled egg, a side of yoghurt and curry sauce. The Biryani is aromatic, sufficiently spiced for the Hong Kong palate (though I would prefer it to be a little more spicy), the chicken is well seasoned and not dry. The side serving of curry sauce gives the rice additional heat and moisture, and yoghurt a refreshing balance to this flavorsome and must order dish! If your friend is member, ask them to bring you to the FCC, the food is good value, drinks are cheap, staff friendly and good atmosphere. The meal with gin and tonic was only a snip over $100.  …Read More

Nice surprise
Carpe Diem
2024-01-06
On this day I was wondering around the area looking for somewhere to eat.  I eventually ended up at Carpe Diem, even though I had walked past this place on many occasions I didn't know it was a Taiwanese restaurant. The interior is cosy with a small number of seats and friendly atmosphere. The menu has typical Taiwanese dishes, salads, a selection of desserts and Taiwanese drinks. The ordering is done via a QR code. I ordered the crispy fried popcorn chicken set meal.  The fried chicken is served on a bowl of rice with vegetables, noodles and half an egg, and a serving of shrimp paste mayo.  I didn't have much expectation of this place as I was looking for a quick bite before drinks. And much to my surprise the popcorn fried chicken was very good and addictive. The batter was crispy and well seasoned, the chicken flavorsome and moist. And the unexpectedly good shrimp paste mayo enhances the fried chicken to another level, it was so good that I asked for more! The overall the dish very good but could have better if the noodles were changed to something else as there were bland. I will be back to try other things on the menu! …Read More

The Pantry & Chips Republic
2022-03-13
I had not been to The Pantry for a few years as I moved away for a few years. The new location is not as convenient as before but it is good that they are still around. I was in the area and decided to visit to check if they have maintained the quality from their previous location in Elements. Today I came with a friend and ordered the fish and chips, sea urchin and scallop linguine and The Pantry's pancake. Fish and chip - 4/5The fish was moist, well flavoured with a light batter. I would have preferred chips instead of fries but its rare in HK, saying that the chips were soft on the inside and crispy on the outside.Sea and scallop linguine -4/5This dish just about managed a 4, the reason for this is that ingredients and sauce was good but the sauce was a bit too runny and did not hold on to the linguine and it because the sauce was so good that I give it a 4 The Pantry's pancakes - 4/5 We were a little boring and went for the classic pancake, it was just as I remembered, light, fluffy and not too sweet. And now why is why the title of my review? The simple reason is, why is there not a branch on HK Island! …Read More

Dough Bros Pizza & Doughnuts (皇后大道東)
2022-03-13
I tried Dough Bros doughnuts for the first time this month and frankly I do not know why did not I did not before! They are so addictive with that cinnamon sugar coating and good selection of fillings, my current favourite is the Nutella. These doughnuts are more additive that the pizzas so just stop or I will overdose on the sugary goodies! …Read More

The fish is good!
Fish & Chick (高街)
2022-02-18
This was my second time to Fish and Chick, on this occasion I ordered the crab croquettes and salad for starters, mains I upgraded to the barramundi fish and chips with drink a ginger lemon and honey tea. The drink came first and it was like instant booster, the intense ginger and lemon was exactly what I needed for this cold day, there wasn't much honey in the drink which is what I prefer. The next to come was the crab croquettes salad, you get two croquettes, the croquettes was crunchy and had a good amount of crab meat, and the salad was fresh and well dressed. And finally the fish and chips, the fish was a good size, had a good crunch, well seasoned and fish to batter ratio, and wasn't too oily. For the taste it was good, the meaty fish, batter and a small amount of tartar sauces is very similar to what you get in the U.K and was satisfying. As for the chip, this was a disappointment, I know that chip shop chips are rare in Hong Kong but the fries/chips that is used here is doesn't pair well with the fish and also the quantity of chips was on the small side.  The taste would be 4/5 had it not been for the disappointing chips, saying that this is a place I will return to and enjoy the fish. …Read More

Good hangout spot
STARBUCKS COFFEE
2022-02-13
On this particular morning I decide to go out for breakfast and head down to the local Starbucks that I have passed many times and not actually gone in.  To my discovery I found it very pleasant, this is a small outlet with a limited number of seats, once you get in there are a few window seats where you can watch the world go by, a table in the middle and also seating by the back wall. And with the friendly staff there is charm to this small branch. I order an oat latte macchiato and a sausage roll to dine in.  As usual I find the oat latte macchiato a little weak, maybe I should add another short next time. The sausage roll is also at its usual standard and is good, especially with some ketchup. I stay in this branch for around half hour before going onto my next appointment, and look forward to hanging out here again. …Read More

Average
Rangers House
2022-02-13
After a hike to the Aberdeen Reservoir we headed down to Aberdeen for lunch, when looking around for places to eat we find that the small area is very local with a tendency for more local eateries. After a short search within the area we choose Rangers house, this is located on the 4th floor of a commercial building and which also has a nice and relaxing outside seating area, the cushions on the seats could be updated though as the dirt is very apparent on the yellow coverings. We also noticed that the outside area has a two BBQ grills and the inside a comprehensive music system and children's play area  which would be great for having parties once dining in numbers have been lifted. The menu choices are good with Asian, Western and snack choices. We chose the Rangers burger and a braised pork on rice bowl (with fried chicken), for drinks an iced lemon tea and branded orange juice.  The drinks don't take long to arrive, the orange juice was branded so no comment there but the iced lemon tea tasted diluted. The next to be served with the braised pork and fried chicken rice, this was served in a paper plate.  The portion size was good with a good amount of braised pork, pickles, half an egg and two bits of fried chicken. The pork was good, a good balance without too much fat, the pickles fresh and the fried chicken was crunch, batter well seasoned and moist inside.  When the burger arrived the immediate reaction was who stole the rest of my fries, the portion of fries seemed like less than half of what you normally expect. I am not sure what makes this a Rangers burger other than being served at Rangers as there is nothing notably different or outstanding from other burgers. For the taste I found the burger a little too salty, the quality of meat could be better but based on the cost of the burger and fries its acceptable. Overall an OK place and with this one experience, it could have been better with improvements to the burger and seating. …Read More

Just OK
NOOT
2022-02-13
Met my friend at this new cafe, the design has seating outside which is good for recent times. The interior is average, not one of those places that people will go to take social media photos.NOOT is operating on a soft opening so a few items on the menu are not available. For me there wasn’t a very good selection on the small menu, I eventually I choose the smoked salmon and avocado on sour dough toast. My friend chose the tuna melt panini. For drinks we ordered two coffees. Based on the menu selection my expectation of the food wasn’t too high. The coffees arrived first, they were OK, it wasn’t a particularly good roast but at the same time was not bad, note there is a nutty and fruity selection. Next to arrive was the salmon and avocado sourdough toast, the presentation was good but portion size was on the small side, the toast was crunchy but maybe a little too thin as there should be a good layer of un-toasted bread on the inside but this is not possible when the bread is so thin, this adds to the overall eating experience with the crunch toast, soft bread in middle, salmon and avocado. This was not the case for this dish, with the thin toast and amount of avocado, it just didn’t do it for me. Saying that the amount of salmon was good in relation to the portion size. For the tuna and cheese panini, this was as expected for this type of dish, the portion size and amounts of tuna/cheese was good. The panini is also served with small salad on the plate, this was fresh and well dressed. This type of coffee shop is in a very competitive space and with what is offered at NOOT it is not enough for me to revisit.I hope this they will use the soft opening time to improve on the menu as they are in a good spot that can attract a good lunch clientele.   …Read More

Cheap and satisfying
Hungry Korean (蘭桂坊)
2022-02-08
I didn’t want to cook or go out today so I used one of the delivery apps to order dinner. Whist swiping though hungry Korean seemed like a good choice. I order the snack size japchae and pork sushi roll. The order took around took around 25 minutes to arrive. The japchae was snack size but it didn’t disappoint on flavour, had a generous amount of ingredients and wasn’t oily. The pork sushi roll portion size was large, also packed with ingredients that isn’t rice and was good in flavour. Overall a cheap but satisfying dinner. …Read More

Lawry’s The Prime Rib
2022-02-08
After a friend sent me the Lawry’s 40% off promotion, I immediately asked my friends if they were interested and within minutes we booked a table for the weekend. I have heard of Lawry’s this was my first time visiting. The entrance is where you check in and behind is a glass elevator and a stair case, when you get up the stairs you enter a grand dining room with high dome, the decor is traditional and seating is spacious. Shortly after being seated we were given the prime rib promotion menu and offered water. I ordered the English Cut which is three slices, the California cut is one slice but thicker. The prime ribs are carved in front of you from the iconic silver carts. The meat is served with mash, Yorkshire pudding and gravy, and you offered spinach and or sweetcorn, note that theses two options will incur a cost. The starters is either a soup or the famous spinning salad. I choose soup of the day which was crab meat soup, this was warming creamy and tasty with actual crab meat. My friend choose the salad, not pictured here but it was also very good. Next came the mains and the moment I had been waiting for all week, the English cut prime rib with mash, Yorkshire pudding, spinach and gravy. The prime rib by default is served rare which is my preference. I sample a piece of the prime rib before mixing with the side dishes and there was instant satisfaction, the meat is tender, moist and flavoursome. I then go on to try the Yorkshire pudding, this was made well, crunchy on the outside and soft on the in. The creamed spinach was flavoursome and went well with the smooth mash potato. Next was to combine all the food items on one fork with some horse radish, be careful as it’s extremely hot. That bite with all the food items was extremely satisfying. I should have come here sooner! Highly recommended even if there isn’t a discount. …Read More

Iconic Whopper
Burger King
2022-02-06
The BK on the peak is the last surviving branch in HK, today as a reward for hiking up the peak was a whopper. I order the iconic Whopper with bacon and cheese, after paying I noticed that you can add a patty for $10 instead of the usual $16. The order didn’t take long to be ready, the burger was prepared to it’s usual high standard, the salad was fresh and with a good amount of sauce. The combination of the ingredients was satisfying and brought me back to my university days when I was a regular to BK. Next time I will be adding another patty to increase the satisfaction level. I hope this last branch of BK survives, see you soon!Staff: friendly and helpful Cleanliness: tables, chairs and floors were clean …Read More

Carving
2022-02-05
We decided to have lunch in Sheung Wan and whilst browsing OpenRice I came across Carving, I had walked past on a number of occasional and have been meaning to try I it. We walked in without a reservation and got a seat immediately. Without any hesitation we both ordered the carved roast beef, it was the only reason we came here. The set per person was $138 + 10% service charge and came with a pumpkin soup, roast beef with fries/salad and a drink, which was a fairly decent price. The first to arrive was the pumpkin soho, the quantity wasn’t a lot and what I found a little annoying was that the bowl was half full, if this is the standard quantity you are going to serve then use an appropriate bowl. The taste of the pumpkin soup was a little weak, maybe it wa seasonal. On to the mains, you get one slice of roast beef, fries and salad. Starting with the salad, this was fresh and well dressed. The crunch of the fries was very good and the paprika enhanced the flavour well but it was little salty, if this can be reduced it would have been perfect. And for the centre piece, the beef didn’t disappoint, the meat was soft and flavoursome and served rare by default. If you want medium and also the gravy to be served separately remember to do this when you order. Overall thumbs up to Carving, a few things that could be improved, the soup as mentioned and also the coffee which maybe have been a little burnt, other than two minor things this place offers a good value and satisfying lunch. …Read More

WING WAH ALLDAY (Lee Tung Avenue)
2022-02-05
I was shown a photo for the charcoal french toast marshmallow and peanut butter whilst in quarantine over a month ago. And today after a hike up to the peak we decided to come try it out. The French toast is located under the snack section, we order this and respective drinks. The drinks don’t take long to arrive but the toast as stated on the menu takes a little longer. When eventually it arrives, the stature looks impressive, it’s a mysterious cube of darkness from the charcoal. So I cut it in half to share, the texture is soft and inside is peanut butter and marshmallow. I try the French toast and it wasn’t what I expected, the dark charcoal tasted overtly oil than anything else, as for the inside well it was just bread with a scarce amount of peanut butter and marshmallow, the ratio was off. The dark exterior felt like a gimmick and this what seemed like and exciting snack that I had high hopes for turned out to but a huge disappointment, it was just a cube of bread with marshmallow and peanut butter. We only had one item on the menu and that doesn’t represent the quality of the food, so will be back to try other things on the menu. …Read More
