廚餘
Yat Lok Restaurant
2024-06-09
But that’s just me. …Read More

Juicy and Genuinely Good
Neighbor
2022-01-05
I’ve never liked burgers much. So many places under-season and overcook the patty, and there’s nothing worse than a dry and crumbly burger. Neighbor is the ONLY joint I go back to repeatedly because their patties are so juicy it trickles down my arm when I eat. The taste is on point and doesn’t need a whole lot of ketchup/mustard/mayo to create that illusion of ‘flavour’. My favourite is the burger with added whole mushroom..I cannot get enough of that. My husband prefers the one with pineapple for the added sweetness. I would definitely recommend people skip all the big chains and try this Neighbor. …Read More

Oolaa (必列者士街)
2019-03-08
I've dined at Oolaa a total of 4 times since its opening, and each time is more disappointing than the last.My experience yesterday was appalling, so much so that I felt the need to come here and discuss it. Yeah, I'm passive aggressive like that. (but my friend did give the staff our feedback.)I ordered a 3 course lunch set:1. Tuna Tartare - ingredients were decent, not the freshest, but edible. The miso dressing was too salty for my taste, but that's just me.2. Pan Roasted Fillet of Cod -  - a VERY misleading name to the dish. Check out my photo below. See that bowl of pasta? See the cherry tomato? See the 2 pieces of fish SMALLER than half a piece of cherry tomato? That's my fillet of cod. Imagine you're on the Keto, thought you're getting some protein for lunch but instead is met with big plate of squid-ink pasta with a side of bread. That's just fraud. The worst part is that the whole dish was bland. The pasta water was under-salted, so the basis of this dish is already ruined. The whole thing was so flat and so tasteless that the piece of pea shoot atop the dish pretty much over-powered everything. 3. Ginger Creme Brulee - nothing was bruleed. It a bowl of cream with sugar crystals on top. definitely not a redeeming quality to my disastrous main course.Maybe other dishes were better, right? Nope.Steak is pretty difficult to screw up, so my friend ordered the angus beef, medium rare. When she cut into it, it did appear to be red, but how could it be so hard to chew? She offered me a piece, and it tasted burnt despite there being no blackened charring. It was also very under-seasoned, lacking not only salt, but even the taste of beef. The food here was so bad I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Why is Oolaa still in business?I am baffled. …Read More

HOW IS AMARONI'S STILL IN BUSINESS!?
Amaroni's New York Italian Restaurant & Café (又一城)
2016-11-06
Like Dan Ryan's, Amaroni's has recently gotten a facelift and will always be one of those restaurants you count on being around when you're in the mood for heavy carbs in American portions.  The former, however, has managed to  maintained a modicum of culinary quality throughout the years while my latest visit to Amaroni's will most likely keep me away for the next decade.Let's start with the bread. The first thing you see upon entering the restaurant is the baker loading loafs of pre-baked bread into the oven. Seeing as how it's complimentary, you can almost forgive its mediocre quality. You'd think witnessing rolls go into the oven means you'll be served hot bread, but this is where one gets very wrong. Ours was a table of six and they served us two half-pieces of cold ciabatta, one soggy breadstick, and a stale cheesy muffin. The server was very enthusiastic to offer us some oil and vinegar, but when there isn't even enough bread to go around, it's hard to appreciate her service. To share, we ordered a bowl of the only soup available on the menu - red spinach soup. Red Spinach, you say? I've never heard of such vegetable! Must be the new super-food I don't know about!! Nope. It's just tomatoes soup with regular spinach. There's also some carrots, celery, and a ton of croutons. It's actually pretty hearty and tastes good with a light cream base. From here on, we ordered two starters to share: calamari and a grande grilled chicken salad. The calamari had a decent coating and a really good mayonnaise-based tomato dip. But the squid itself was undercooked and lacked any kind of seasoning. Instead of a springy calamari, the flesh felt like it disintegrated in my mouth without much chewing. We thought the grilled chicken salad must be a fail-proof dish, but instead became the lowest point of our lunch. We expected fresh greens, tangy dressing, and juicy chicken, but what ended up on our table was a sad plate of wilted iceberg lettuce smothered in oil and sugar. Yes, the dressing was sweet, and not even in a complex way; there was not a hint of vinegar, salt, pepper, nothing. And then we noticed another anomaly: where is the chicken?! We counted a total of four pieces of chicken in the grande-sized salad. They were each the size of one's thumbnail. My sister is on a low carb diet and throughout our meal, she kept asking "where is my protein??" At this point, my mother was making plans to continue our meal at a different restaurant, but unfortunately, we had already ordered wild mushroom risotto, meatball spaghetti and cherry pie pizza for our entree. The risotto was not bad. It was creamy and the rice was  perfect al dente without a trace of uncooked crusty bit in the middle. The mushroom was very pungent, but was slightly overpowered by the heavy cream. The meatball spaghetti was sweet more than savory. It had a simple tomato and onion sauce but lacked salt, herbs, etc. The pizza arrived and looked excellent, so we thought our meal was taking a turn for the better. We all reached out at once to grab a slice, but despite it's pretty, caramelized topping, the bottom but was undercooked, limp and soggy, causing our pizza to droop like wet tarp. I remember dining at Amaroni's before it's renovation and thinking that it wasn't too terrible. But today's experience has put me off future visits for good. …Read More
