A Happy Feast
Daixijia Japanese Cusine
2016-04-19
I've been coming here for a couple of times as it is very spacious and reasonably priced. Sashimi:The sashimi was great. The shrimp meat was fresh and flavorful, though I feel a bit of trouble to take way the skin and heads which may actually be the reason for its freshness. Other must try includes Salmon, Ark Clam, Hokkaido Scallop, Conch, Matsubugai, Geoduck, Hokkigni, Yellow Tail.  All are smooth and rich.Rolls: Soft-shell crab with AvocadoWith avocado and flying fish roe as its topping, this sushi roll gives a cold and refreshing sensation to the palate, though the crab is almost untraceable.Appetizer: EdamameThe peas are plentiful and the hairy skin is easy to take away.  The portion is so big that we cannot finish.Tempura:  prawn and crabstick tempura, mushroom tempura, capsicum, pumpkin, eggplant  Another favourite apart from sashimi, coated with a light and crunchy batter.  The oil is minimal which is great for me. Grilled Sushi: king crab and crab roe stick, grilled eel, salmon toro Each had a nice charred texture but deeply flavoured.  The crab stick with roe is particularly impressive.  deep fried: Japanese style cheese rice-cake is lovely with funny texture like mochimashed potato balls with cheese are tiny potato balls coated in cheese powder.  All deep-fried snacks looked pleasant and are served hot.hand roll: sea urchinThe only food that I think need improvement since it is a little smelly.Don't have time to try the salad bar which look quite nice with kimchi, corn, cherry tomato and something like coleslaw which are all very healthy and good appetizers. The drinks are plentiful, from softdrinks, beer to Chinese tea.  Overall, the food came at a reasonable pace and the staff were polite, too.…Read More

Real Japanese style
Ramen Kureha
2016-01-08
Tai Hang is not my usual place for hanging out and this Japanese ramen shop had been chosen among all the great choices for dining.  It was because others either had a long queue or that the prices was not reasonable.  The setting was very Japanese with the picture of Osaka icon: the running man.  Besides, I could hang my coat on the wall and my bag under the dining table which was convenient for diners.  I ordered the prawn ramen and the soup was very impressive.  It was so rich that it tasted like lobster soup.  But the prawn was not particularly meaty.  According to the menu, Japanese sake was also one of the ingredients for the soup but it was not strong when served.  Maybe the sake had been evaporated into the air when boiled.  As for the ramen itself, it was rather thin and the texture was OK.  Friend ordered ramen in pork bone soup with fish powder from three different kinds of fish.  Seems to me the one he tried was more traditional.  The "lava" egg was delicious but the Cha Siu was a bit too fat for me.   On the whole the standard was OK and the overall impression of the shop and ramen was very Japanese.  But honestly, some other ramen that I 've tried were slightly better than the ones we had this time.  The main point is the noddles were not outstanding nor extraordinarily good.…Read More

no more rush

After whole day's work, looking for a place to have a quick dinner.  I should have put whatever food into my mouth in a rush.  But this small Italian restaurant had this glamour to make you eat in an italian manner, i.e. enjoy food in a relaxing manner.     It all started with the seem-to-be signature dish "black garlic bread".  The look was not pleasing at all but after putting some butter on top, it really tasted great.Ordered a pasta - chicken thigh in Alla Pomodori Style.  No idea what it was and just thought traditional ingredients like tomato and onion had been used.  It was good that this small italian restaurant has got lots of choices to go with the pasta and you can simply mix and match with anything on the menu. The chicken thigh was boneless with a piece of parma ham and some cheese.  The pasta smells nice with strong olive flavour and I especially like the chicken thigh which had a crispy coating, something crystal like.  Would surely visit more to try the desserts and other dishes, and eat the Italian way again.…Read More

Feel good to try various BBQ snacks in a clean and cosy air-conditioned environment.Thai style raw shrimp became our appetizer.  The Thai spicy sauce is the essence of this dish and the shrimp is really meaty.  Good that there was no trace of any intestine and every shrimp is so nicely cut.I had very bad experience of eating Japanese eel before in some low-quality Japanese restaurants which actually used other cheaper species.  This time I am satisfied because it was the traditional Japanese eel that the restarurant offered and the skin was also grilled perfectly.  Meatballs are always my favourite.  This time we had the fish ball with cheese which was melty and hot.  Something ordinary and yet very satisfying. The scallops were much bigger than I expected.  I like the way it was lightly seasoned with no BBQ sauce.  With such fresh quality and tender meaty texture, just a sprinkle of the spices was good enough to bring out the freshness and seafood flavour. The king prawn is another great seafood choice with plenty of garlic.  Very strong smell and flavour indeed which was another kind of enjoyment to the tastebuds.  But in terms of juiciness, scallops were still the best of all.…Read More

Arome Local Cafe
Arome Bake + Drink (TKO Plaza)
2015-10-28
Instead of queuing to order the food at the cashier, my friend and I must first secure a table because it was quite full with a few families still waiting to be seated.  This time we came for the meal set but not for the soft serve ice cream because we've tried a few times before.  I was quite interested in the pasta set because it was served in soup with a piece of Japanese style BBQ pork.  At first glance it was like Japanese ramen.  The soup tasted like chicken and corn soup which was quite nice and not of MSG.   The slice of pork was tender and tasty too.  I particularly like the egg which was smooth with a milky texture.  The only drawback was that the milk tea tasted like syrup with not much tea flavour.  My friend's deluxe set looked great.  It was like an all-day-breakfast including eggs, bacon, sausages and grilled tomatoes.  It was healthy too with fresh green salad.  I think the set was named 'deluxe' because of the grilled scallop.  I tried the pork sausage which was not as salty as the usual german sausage and the smell of the choped pork was good.  It was more like minced pork in texture. The special green tea drink charged an extra of 20 bucks which was rather expensive.  I think it should be offered in a lower price upon purchase of the set.…Read More

Fusion desserts
Seoulmate Cafe
2015-09-15
Western district is now more accessible with many new restaurants springing up all over the area.  Good news for foodies like me.  This time I tried the fusion desserts in a Korean cafe. The cafe does offer main dishes and drinks too apart from a variety of desserts as displayed in the fridge.  I started with the grilled pork rice roll which is very "Korean" in terms of the flavour and ingredients.  The gravy and rice matches well and the pork is tender to eat.I'm not particularly fond of green tea but this swiss roll in green tea looks very rich and yummy.  The texture is not the spongy kind but moderately soft and rich in green tea flavour.  I actually like this special texture which resembles that of cheese cake.  I also like the cream which feels more like ice cream. With so many choices of desserts here, you cannot resist trying a few more.  Finally I opted for the orange flavour pudding.  The orange flavour is very pleasant with the crystal-like sugar coating on top of the pudding.  So you won't be disappointed with all these extra-ordinary fusion desserts here in Seoulmate. …Read More

Indian delight
Tulsi Indian Restaurant (Tsat Tsz Mui Road)
2015-08-04
I usually don't fancy spicy food and curry but this time, I don't mind trying Indian food because the restaurant looks very decent and seems the food is kind of fushion with western dishes.  After all, I am that kind of person who always cannot resist new experience. When I saw the picture of the oyster in the menu, I had no hesitation to have a try because it is a very special indian style way of serving the oysters.  Masala gravy is often found in the indian menu but it is really creative to use it for oysters.  The oysters themselves are juicy and fresh.  Yummy! And the main course, Masala and seafood again: Prawn Masala.  It's a pity that the size of the prawn is not of "King" size so a little disppointed.  But the gravy is great for dipping the indian bread. It's rare to have wholewheat layered bread which is actually more healthy than the white bread.  The garlic stuffed naan is also nice but I still prefer the paratha which is made of wholewheat grain.Good try, good experience!…Read More

Let's have a drink, and waffle too!
Espuma (H8)
2014-10-09
Espuma is definitely a great place for chitchatting with friends.  Impressed by its variety of drinks and desserts, I can hardly pick just one choice out of so many.  Anyway, I finally pick the Chocolate Espuccino, which has got a piece of Almond Roca Chocolate inside. Interesting!  The mildly bitter taste mainly comes from the dark chocolate.  The drink is really weighty and the big "wine glass" also makes you feel cool. I used to visit Macau quite often and the Spanish Seafood Fried Rice is one of my favourite whenever I dined at the Portugese restaurant.  This Paella con Marisco from Espuma is slightly different from the one I've tried in Macau.  It's of smaller portion and the sauce/soup has almost been all absorbed by the rice, unlike the Macau-Portugese style with all the rice soaked in the whole big bowl of red colour sauce.  Both the mussels and the big prawns are really fresh and elastic.  The sauce is slightly spicy with the smell of spice which makes the rice very appetizing. The waffle here is satisfying.  It not only looks artistic, with the flower-shaped and colourful fresh fruits, but also tastes delicious with the extraordinarily spongy texture.  You can choose from a few different flavour of ice cream or sorbet.  I've already had enough icy coolness from the drink and so pick the vanilla ice cream.  The thin piece of crispy almond biscuit is very nice, too.  The whole thing is a nice combination. The Sweet Talkin' Platter is very special choices of 3 desserts: Mr Grey Likes Creme Brulee, Ile Flottante with Hazelnut, Churros.  All three look elegant and are sweet in a moderate level.  The manager advises us to try the Churros first, then  the Creme Brulee and lastly the Flottante.  The Churros is a bit hard and I like the other two more.  The coffee crystal piece on the egg pudding aouses the taste buds and the cofee smell left there for quite a while.  The Flottante has a very special texture and melts slowly in the mouth like washing the tongue softly with foam. The whole dinner is a pleasant and stylish experience.  Let's have a drink again some day, and waffle too.  …Read More

BEA Credit Card Discount
The Spaghetti House
2014-09-30
This set is only available for BEA Credit Card holder.  Though a 2-person set, it's enough for 3 of us.  The smoke salmon salad is nice.  The salmon slices are quite thick and meaty.  I like soup with pastry top and so paid extra 30 dollars for two soups with pastry.  Maybe because the soup is lobster soup and not cream soup, it seems the pastry tastes not as good after soaking into the red soup. The main courses are of fair standard.  The ribs are served with chips which I like.  The ribs are not as tasty as the ruby tesday ribs because the sauce are too salty.  I think they should separate the food and the sauce.  Luckily the meat itself is quite tender.  But still I cannot feel the nice smell of BBQ.  It clearly has not been roasted with strong enough heat and so the meat is not crispy at all.  It may happen that the sauce has made the meat less crispy. The fried rice is very oily and we cannot finish it.  I think the problem is with the sauce.  If cream sauce can be used, the italian rice will be more tasty and smooth.Mum wants to try the ice fuit tea and I order the red bean milk.  All requires extra money.  But we are not satisfied becuase there are only two big chunks of sweet melon in the ice tea which is clearly too mean!  We expect at least six to eight pieces of fruit and with variety.  To me, this is not a value for money set.  We finally paid almost 400 in total.…Read More

Begging for food
Manya Japanese Restaurant
2014-09-18
The first thing to grumble about is the slow delivery of food.  I already felt annoyed when the first round of sashimi arrived after waiting for quite a while because there were just two thin slices or so for certain kinds of sashimi like the conch and geoduck clam but I remembered I ordered at least 8-10 pieces for each kind of sashimi including the scallop.  If it came out to have half of the amount I ordered, I would just be as satisfied but now they only serve one or two slices on the plate but we had four people eating! My anger was further aroused when the staff came and told us that both the scallop and tuna fish sashimi were out of stock.  I was shocked to hear that because I had not eaten any scallop sashimi at that time.  Then the manager came and said normally the food provided at lunch will not be as much and that is why the lunch session is less costly compared to the dinner session.  Hearing that, I couldn't help bombarding this irresponsible manager.  I responded that I was not using any discount or group coupon and I paid the full price for this Japanese buffet.  He was really using a very poor excuse to stop from providing the food that we deserve.  And I don't think they charge us at a low price though with almost $190 per head.Besides, the hygiene condition was not good as well.  I found a small ant inside my bowl which was not taken seriously by the manager too.  He even asked me to pay the bill while I was just beginning to eat the first round of the food.  After refusing to pay unless improvement is seen, the food came more quickly and the manager also asked the staff to bring us a set of tuna plus scallop sashimi.  The food is actually not bad but I think the restaurant is trying to fool the customer by not offering certain kind of popular food without advance notice. The sushi is of fair standard and there's nothing remarkable.  Anyway, they still have some good quality food though the waiting time is very long such as the juicy BBQ pineapple and tempura.  Overall I think the hot food is better than the sashimi and sushi.…Read More

Localised Steakhouse
Gem Restaurant
2014-09-10
Though the name of this restaurant resembles that of a more famous one situated in Prince Edward, one can tell the difference easily as the food served here is of ordinary standard.  The lunch sets are not costly but you cannot expect a high quality.  Afterall the outlook and taste are more like those served in Hong Kong style restaurant but presented in a more decent manner. Both the soup and sweet bun are OK, the bun tastes better and more spongy than the butter toast served in typical HK style restaurant. The main course is less satisfying because the fish roll with asparagus is too plain and the fishy smell stays strong without a good sauce on top of it.  The texture is acceptable but I guess the smell and flavour can be enhanced if it has been pan fried slightly.  It's good to have plenty of vegetables but still there isn't any sauce served with it, making the whole dish dull and tasteless.  The Frankfurt sausauge is the only food that has got stronger flavour. The jelly dessert is a little surprise for me since it had been my child time favourite whenever my family brought me to a local steakhouse.  Though not particularly yummy, the orange colour and the condensed milk are remarkable to me.…Read More

MOS Burger (健威坊)
2014-08-28
Since the "Mc Burger" issue, I haven't been eating any burgers recently.  Dropped by the MOS burger and ordered the fish fillet burger set.  I knew just eating the burger would hardly satisfy my apetite and so I had the fried chicken and fries as well.   Love the onions added into the fish burger though the dressing sauce is a bit more than enough.  MOS burger is definitely more expensive than Mc's burger set but worth the price.  The fish fillet is fresh and tasty and the bun itself is soft too.  The fries are in bigger size and all in good shape and colour.  As for the chicken, the meat is a bit rough but acceptable since it is very thin and not greasy at all.  I drank the corn soup to make the whole meal less unhealthy. The soup is nice, a little sweet and smells good.  I cannot see the cream inside which I prefer since I actually don't like creamy texture.…Read More

Great Big Feast
Victoria Harbour Restaurant
2014-08-20
Having dinner in this restaurant with my family.  I must say all the food is so yummy with its best value($1498 including service charge and drinks).  We all enjoy the meal and almost cannot finish all the food cause the dishes are so sizable. The suckling pig is crispy and not oily. The not-to-be-missed medium size abalone.  The abalone is thick and meaty. The fish were served in two different ways.  One fried with broccoli and the other steamed with black soya bean.  Personally I like the first one more with no bone at all. The vegetables in soup are kind of like baby sprout.  Again the portion is so big that we cannot finish. Roast Chicken are nice too.  The meat is soft and tender. The shark fin soup is of average quality, more like a mixture of water and corn starch.  But overall I am very satisfied with this great big feast.…Read More

fair quality desserts
Yan Wo Dou Bun Chong

Always have a craving for cold food, especially desserts in this kind of hot weather.  Try the choco tofu Jell-O.  it doesn't look nice but the flavour is OK, not too sweet for me.  But I still prefer a thicker choco sauce if possible cause the whole bowl of tofu becomes too watery in texture.  The other one I try is grass jelly tofu Jell-O.  It's nice that I can put on some red sugar but if there's also evaporated milk to add into it, it will be even better.  I would say both are of fair quality.  …Read More
