Delicious cheesecake
Sbakery by Mama Soo
2024-07-11
The cheesecakes here are seriously delicious! They are rich and decadent without being too sweet. Sold by the slice, which is great because when do I ever need to eat an entire cheesecake to myself? They have their regular menu + special flavors that rotate. I’ve tried several of them and have never been disappointed…Read More

Mediocre experience
DANJI
2024-05-14
We came here with a craving for Korean fried chicken and ordered the "spicy" fried chicken and were very much let down. Overall the experience was mediocre. Getting seated and settled into our table could be described as a bit chaotic; 2 other tables were seated shortly before and after us. The staff gave menus to both of the tables but not us, even the table that sat down after us. We did not get a menu until we asked the staff and were handed 1 single menu whereas other tables has 1 per person. When I asked for a 2nd menu, the staff asked and took a menu from the table adjacent to us to hand to me which is awkward. The restaurant was not even full and it appears that they don't even have more than 7 menus for patrons. The grilled shortrib was tasty, but for $400 I have higher expectations for both taste and portion. The "spicy" fried chicken was not at all spicy. The chicken itself has minimal coating so it was not crispy. The glaze was more of a sauce, too wet which added to the lack of crisp. Feels like the fried chicken was an afterthought on the menu. The music was far too loud given the small space and bright lighting. Looking around, you could see that every table was leaning in to speak to each other to be heard over the music.…Read More

Overall bad
The Cottage Cafe & Pub
2020-10-14
Start to finish this was a bad experience. Been there before and it was acceptable but my last visit has cemented the fact that we will not return. We went here because my friend wanted black pudding which was shown on the menu on social media. There was no black pudding. The orange juice they served us was Juicy Juice which is disgusting but also they served another table actual orange juice. I ordered the hanger steak and mashed potatoes and onions. There were no onions which was not the end of the world. The real offensive tasting issue with the dish was that there were olives in the mashed potatoes. Who puts olives in mashed potatoes even???Service was poor at best. When we walked in nobody even acknowledges us so we sat ourselves. I watched another pair of people walk in, same thing and no temperature check. I watched another man stand staring at the 2 waitstaff for a solid 4 minutes waiting to be seated before he sat himself at a seat, waited again and then stood up to get a menu for himself. I also watched 1 of the girls working wearing gloves to handle food and then tie up her hair with her gloved hands and then return to touching food. She clearly doesn’t understand the idea that just because gloves offer some protection to her, if they’re changed regularly, touching her hair and then patron’s food is far from acceptable hygiene practice. …Read More

Good food, mediocre service
The Italian Club - Wine Bar, Steak House & Pizza Gourmet
2018-09-22
I had a booking at 9:00 thru app, when we arrived the staff wasn't aware of our booking and we needed to wait while they setup a table for us, not a big deal. While we waited they poured us 2 welcome drinks which is a nice touch. I must say the food was good but my complaints are all about the service. We were seated and not offered menus. I waited to see how long it would take them to bring me a menu but after waiting 10 minutes I decided I was too hungry to wait any longer and had to ask them to bring menus. Napkins... all other diners had them but, like the menus, I had to ask the staff to get them for us. This really makes me wonder if the staff knows how to set up a table for the next set of guests or if everyone has to chase the staff down to get basic things like menus and napkins.Speaking of table setup, when we arrived to our table there was a small basket with a DIRTY napkin in it. I was very confused what this was for until I saw the staff coming around to offer more bread sticks to guests. When they got to my table, like everything else in this experience, I had to ask them for a fresh basket and not some dirty leftovers from the previous diners. To add to this, I saw another table seated after us who was almost immediately brought a fresh basket of bread sticks so I can't believe that the staff who set the table didn't even bother to take away the dirty bread basket and then they failed to followup with bringing us the bread. Food:~Steak tartar was tasty and a good sized portion but was better after adding a bit of salt. Would also be good to be given more than 2 small pieces of bread to eat it with.~Green salad with buffalo mozzarella was good.~The Big Italian burger was tasty and very well seasoned.~USDA Rib-eye was flavorful but came with no salt. I ordered the steak medium and it arrived on the rare side of medium-rare. This is fine because I will eat a rare-ish steak but it wasn't what I asked for.  ~Traditional tiramisu - only complaint: it wasn't big enough hahaha.…Read More

Slow/no service!
Sodam Chicken
2017-08-17
Don't come for lunch if you want to order takeaway because you'll get no service. I walked in and was ignored by 2 staff for several minutes until I just loudly announced I would like to order takeaway. I was then told to wait. 2 other groups of people came in after me and were seated immediately and given menus while I continued to stand and wait without a menu even. 1 staff disappeared upstairs, the other stood around a while before taking the order of 1 of the tables. I continued to wait. When he went to take the order of another table while still ignoring me I finally walked out because this was ridiculous that I am waiting 10 min and not even given a menu when 2 groups can be seated, 2 groups can have their orders taken and the staff has time to stand around stacking napkins. On top of that, the ridiculous staff acted surprised that I would leave angry and tried to get me to come back! You ignore me for so long and think I would possibly want to support your restaurant?! RIDICULOUS!…Read More

OLD, DRY cupcakes
Phoenix Sweets
2016-12-16
I came here twice now and both times have been disappointed by their cupcakes. Thankfully I was using a buy 1 get 1 free deal both times which made it slightly less insulting that a company would charge $30-$35 for a cupcake that felt like and tasted like it was several days old and had been stored in the fridge without any covering to preserve since of the moisture. The cake was horribly dry and much too dense. The frosting was thankfully not too sweet but it was also dry and a strange texture that it could barely be spread out with a knife. I expected the cupcakes I had bought the 2nd time were fresh because the girl working was unpacking them from a box into the display case. My guess was they just came out of storage where they have been kept for about 1 week. Honestly will never be back, not even if I was given a free cupcake. I've had better cupcakes that were made from the store bought box mix…Read More

So delicious
Oddies
2016-10-03
It's always a fun trip to get ice cream and gelato from Oddies, getting to see what new flavors they have available. I've yet to try one that's bad, maybe just not to my liking but not bad. The flavors are always strong so you definitely know what you're eating. The original frozen yogurt that they served in Wan Chai is also available and as delicious as ever. …Read More

Overpriced
Crafty Cow
2016-05-20
I came here the other night with a friend because he had a buy one get one free coupon for "main menu item". The entire restaurant was empty the entire time except for us which, to me, is never a good sign but we decided to give it a try anyways. The menu is pretty simple: bar food (finger foods), appetizers, steaks, non-beef protein options, and side dishes. We both decided on 6oz Australian ribeye which was around $480 each which is pretty expensive for such a small piece but we figure if 1 is free it's not so bad. The fact that they also serve a 3oz portion is laughable because I'm not sure who eats that little. It comes with a small salad on the side which has a nice dressing but nothing too exciting. Along with the steaks came 4 dipping sauces (wasabi aioli, yuzu, Korean Bbq and miso) and 2 salts (charcoal and smoked). The steak itself was good, well cooked, tender and fresh but lacked seasoning so it was good that we had the salt and sauces. We also ordered 2 sides ($48 each); roasted potatoes and truffle Mac n cheese. We liked that the potatoes were crispy but they too needed seasoning and benefited from the dipping sauces. The Mac n cheese didn't have a strong truffle taste which is good if you're not a fan but I expected it to be stronger. The pasta was interesting and I'm not sure what type it was as its not a shape id seen before and the texture was different than anything id had before but I liked the pasta. Because the dish is baked, the pasta got a bit dry and hard and would have benefited from a more generous portion of the truffle sauce. In the end, we weren't able to use the entertainer coupon for buy one get one free because the steak we chose wasn't part of the deal. This annoyed us because there is no stipulation on the coupon and you'd think for a restaurant that has no business, they would want to try a bit harder to cater to the few customers they have because they have made some arbitrary rule about which mains do and do not count as a main menu item. Overall or experience was mediocre at best. The food was decent but nothing particularly memorable other than the small portions and high price. The service was friendly if not a bit nervous but unaccommodating when it comes to using a coupon that should entice customers to come back, not confuse us and cause me to leave thinking I'll never return. …Read More

Tasty but spendy
Woo Tung Yakiniku Dining Bar (Hillier Street)
2016-04-28
came here with my boyfriend for dinner not actually knowing what the cuisine was, just that we live nearby and had walked by several times. there are only 3 tables with 1 Bbq at each so there is limited seated but it was empty when we arrived. We ordered the salted beef, spicy short ribs, garlic beef cubes and sliced pork. Portions are ~$90 each and an alright size for just the 2 of us but would be much too small if more than 2 people. The salted beef tasted like plain, unseasoned beef which isn't very exciting. The sliced pork was very easy to overcook and became very chewy, the taste was alright, also quite plain. Our favorite was the spicy short ribs for sure. The meat is marinated in the spicy sauce which gave it a lot of flavor. The garlic beef cubes were good but you better make sure you like garlic because it is basically beef cubes with a lot of garlic paste on top. Service was prompt and friendly (for HK standards haha) but I'd expect as much given that there wasn't anyone else in the restaurant. Dinner cost us just under $600 and we didn't order any drinks. …Read More

Not so fresh
Pololi
2016-04-18
I've been the the Central branch of Pololi several times but was disappointed by their Sheung Wan location. despite it being on a busy road it's not very visible and Ive actually walked by many times without even noticing the shop. I was there around 5:30pm and the poké choices were sad. They were out of salmon and no stock left which is fine because I prefer tuna. There were 3 tuna choices but each container was almost empty so it just looks like leftover scraps to choose from which isn't very appetizing. because there was so little left, th guy had to make more so that my friend didn't have to choose the vegetarian option. Again he only makes barely enough so it just doesn't look nice. The flavor isn't as good as at their central location. I feel like tha balance of flavored wasn't quite right and less spice was used. The tuna itself tasted ok but texture wasn't very nice. I know sashimi grade ahi is frozen first but the meat should still be firm and feel fresh. The texture here was a bit soggy and spongy. The meat definitely had a weird squishy texture that was very unappealing. I won't be returning to this location in the future and will stick to the original shop in central where everything tastes and feels fresh. …Read More

Yee Shun Dairy Company

It should've been a clue when there was only 2 other people dining here for lunch but I was craving an egg sandwich. I ordered the egg and ham sandwich and the egg custard while my friend ordered the beef and noodle in soup an milk custard. Ham egg sandwich: very little egg that wasn't enough I cover the bread, not salty, not fluffy. Bread was thin with too much butter so it was greasy and soggy. Egg custard: had a strange rubbery taste. The consistency was too firm and not creamy enough. Beef noodle soup: soup had little flavor and was extremely watered down. The beef not flavorful either. Milk custard: good taste and good thickness. Best part of the meal. Also note, there is no lunch or tea set. Set menu is for breakfast only. I'd consider this overpriced for the small portions compared I what you can get elsewhere. …Read More

Baguette Express

I came here for a quick lunch and was pleasantly surprised. It's a complete hole in the wall that I have passed many times without ever noticing.I've had a few Vietnamese sandwiches in HK and haven't been all that impressed. I got the Vietnamese Express Deluxe Sandwich. The baguette was crispy and chewy, the meats flavorful and plentiful, the vegetables pickled without being too sour or too sweet. I opted for a few chili peppers and they were HOT so be warned. For $35, you really can't go wrong I also added coffee for $10 which is... coffee and cream. Nothing spectacular, but as expected which can be just as good.…Read More

Chinese Style French
Le Coin Cafe
2012-06-25
Some of the dishes were very Chinese style French food while others were less so. We had a set 6 course meal, my favorite was probably the mushroom soup which was rich and creamy with ample mushroom flavor. All the dishes were pretty small and most were under-whelming. The plates looked nice but the flavor wasn't always that great. The salad was boring, with 1 very small piece of salmon lox on the side and large chunks of under-ripe tomatoes. The clam (that the server said was the restaurant's best dish) was chewy and full of sand and tasted like nothing more than a steamed clam in it's own juices. Overall, the food was palatable but not worth the regular price. We thankfully came using a group buy coupon. The decor was strange. The tables and seats remind me of a cafeteria. Some of the decor looks nice, other parts look tacky. Kind of a hodgepodge of decorations that don't fit any particular theme.…Read More

Bloop Shisha Lounge
2012-06-14
Great views, great shisha and good food. They have shisha flavors I've never seen before. We went with the "Blue...." which is blueberry and mint which was not too sweet with a nice refreshing after taste. The service is attentive and they change the coals before you have to chase somebody down because the ones you have are dead which is great. We had the burger which was a large portion with juicy meat that was not cooked to death. I wanted to try the sandwich but it, like several other items on the menu, was not available that night. Kind of strange that they didn't even have the ingredients for 1 of the main course offerings when there are only 2 to choose from. We ordered from the "long drinks" list because they were similarly priced to the well drinks and more bang for your buck. The drinks were strong without being over-powering and for $80 not a bad deal.…Read More

Came here for lunch and had the salmon and mashed potatoes. While the salmon had good flavor and was well seasoned it was a bit well done so the texture was dry. The portion was also VERY small. The compensate for the meager portion of fish I was given a massive portion of mashed potatoes. I was disappointed when I took a bite to discover these were sweet potatoes and not regular potatoes since the menu simply stated "mashed potatoes" not mashed "sweet" potatoes The mashed potatoes were literally just that, boiled sweet potatoes that had been mashed. No cream or liquid to give it a smoother consistency, no salt to accent the sweetness of the potato, just sweet potatoes. For ~$150, I would say it was definitely not worth the money. …Read More
