Taste good but overpriced
La Crêperie (鉅芝樓)
2011-08-21
The seating here is quite squashed, but I don't blame them, it's HK and it's in a renovated old building with lots of pillar.Anyway the place is cute enough and at least they put some effort in making the place a bit cozy. Onto the food - had some savoury and sweet crepes. Overall quite impressed by the taste, but slightly overpriced as the ingredients involved aren't that special/expensive. All you need is a good batter and a good cooking tool and you are good to go!We tried a variety of crepes, the usual ones reviewed below, also a salad one, a dessert one, all taste delicious. It seems "light" but I'm sure there are plenty of calories in those things! …Read More

Service is hideous!!
Myung Ga Korean Restaurant
2011-08-21
The food here is actually not bad, in terms of taste. But portion and quality of ingredients wise, not so much. But I'm here to review their SERVICE which is so unbelievably... bad. Quite inconceivable really.Let's talk about the food first - the spicy soup noodle with seafood LOTS of noodles but not much sea food and the broth is just full of oily sauce that's not flavorful. Just oil. And the seafood is not so fresh, e.g. shrimps that are mushy etc.The traditional stone pot rice the portion is decent in terms of rice, but for the beef, instead of proper beef slices, it's just small dose of minced beef..... and you can tell the cutting is the worst/cheapest and some are even burnt.. and that for $110. I could have better for half the price somewhere else!:(The waiters and waitresses here.... to be fair several waitresses are OK, but some are plain rude and inconsiderate and frankly speaking, stupid. And overall the level of service is SLOW slowwww slowwwwwww. No one refilling tea, wanted to get a napkin but couldn't flag anyone down forEVER, the small side dishes took FOREVER to come out (at least 15 minutes, instead of like say within a minute in "normal" circumstances), but guess what? they are super fast in terms of one thing.. giving us the bill!! …Read More

Dickens Bar

I'm writing reviews for 2 separate visits - 1 is curry buffet lunch and the other 1 is for dinner.Curry buffet lunch - great if you like curry; kind of terrible if you don't There's chicken curry, fish curry (although mostly just potatoes..), beef curry, vegetables curry. There are also some naan and papadaum, and of course some chutney and different sauces on the side. There was also some sauteed veggies and a very brief salad bar that's needless to mention. Some desserts on the side but nothing impressive. For the price and location I'd see it's pretty decent. For dinner / drinks - they have quite an extensive drinks list. Asahi was $52 for a pint, promotion. For food they have some traditional English items like ploughman's platter, english full breakfast etc. Sorry just don't appreciate black pudding personally..Anyway the garlic fries was really quite garlicky :) The full breakfast was pretty decent. The spare-ribs was OK, as the sauce was a bit too sweet. The salad "nicoise" is alright, and when they say it's with a small salad it's really with a small salad..... the tuna steak is given as a whole, not sliced. But I was satisfied as I wanted something light with the salad.Staff are courteous enough. Oh!! Forgot to mention the free dessert that comes with, the bread pudding. It was pretty decent given it's free and it's nice and warm and not overly sweet. :)…Read More

A little Shanghainese noodle/rice place in the neighborhood. Not too many choices on the menu, which is why they are able to churn out orders fast with consistent quality and keep the price low. They have the usual stereotypical noodles / veggie rice dishes. Tried the chicken and veggie soup noodles, not bad small pieces of skinless chicken, would prefer some more veggie pieces. Also ordered the preserved veggie and pork slices soup noodles decent enoughm meat slices a bit fatty but broth flavorful enough. The fried pork chop dan dan noodles was not bad either. The peanuts are processed to very fine so not too much of a bite to it. Slightly spicy.Overall pretty decent especially for the price. Will definitely "come back" for buying take-away. Probably won't be eating in though, as spaces are quite cramped and seem not too comfy. Btw the portions here are quite big. Plenty of noodles to make you stuffed!外賣自取 is super fast, food ready in 10 minutes. Btw 外賣自取 is 10% off!…Read More

Brasserie Le Fauchon
2011-08-18
Yumyum!Had the 3 courses dinner. ASparagus with crabmeat, quite cheesy and rich. Delicious. Btw the bread they provide is not bad. Nice crunch with soft center. For main course I had the duck leg confit which was surprisingly good! Nice crispy skin and the leg meat was flavorful~ :)For dessert, a bit disappointed with the souffle.. had the ginger flavor and it wasn't very well made.Service is quite good. Courteous staff. Will def come back and try their other entrees! :)…Read More

ridiculous portion
Pho'1988
2011-08-18
Saw some review in newspaper and decided to give this place a try.The only thing going for them is the TV show newspaper cut out and signs all over the restaurant, just in case you missed that their chef competed on the TVB show.Order a cold mixed vermicelli noodles with beef salad. The portion is SO small I thought they were kidding. I have been to many viet restaurants in HK and had many "low mong" and I couldn't believe what was in front of me!! Just some cold vermicelli and some thin room temp. beef slices.. no shredded veggies or anything just one small piece of lettuce. So basically a small bunch of noodles + some deli slices = $45. :(A bit ridiculous if you ask me. The seating's squashed and the door keeps opening and the hot air keeps coming in.. and the staff service pace's not fast either. Can't think of a reason to go back.. …Read More

Xiguan Congee & Noodle
2011-07-23
This place is a bit out of the way, but decided to give it a try.Staff aren't particularly friendly when we walked in, sort of gave us a rude and hurried feeling :( even though the place was only half occupied.Their menu includes congee dishes, noodles, some rich dishes and some side dishes. The wood ear appetizer is crunchy, slightly oily but acceptable. The deep fried brisket snack dish although it looked great the taste was only average. The fish congee consistency is under-par :( and the chicken dumplings were overpriced and the soup base you can taste the MSG!!! Unless you want your rest of the day to be filled by headache and thirsty-ness by the MSG, and don't mind rude serving staff, I would recommend staying away from this place...:(…Read More

My fav noodle place!!
橋香園雲南過橋米線
2011-07-23
Love love love this place. Not sure how many times I have bought take-away from here. Unless necessary, I wouldn't really dine in.. since it's crowded, not that clean, and it takes forever for them to serve your order (during week day lunch time). Hence the best arrangement is to call ahead of time around 20 mins and go and collect your order in due time! But I'm sure the wait's shorter if you go at night..There are so many toppings to choose from and they are all awesome. Some are more rare like wood ear, "cow kidney mushrooms" (just really slimey mushrooms which are surprisingly good. The BEST part of this noodle place that differentiates from other places is the soup base It's so flavorful I don't even know what's in it.. it's not that pork/bone oily sort of rich soup base that you get from ramen, but it's more clear but just really delicious.. the "clear broth" option is actualy very flavorful. Of course if you prefer spicy you could always get spicy! :)…Read More

Great lunch spot
Chopsticks Kee
2011-07-23
I always get confused when I get here.. coz I can't decide what kind of topping, what kind of noodles and what kind of sauces to pour on top!!Their Sa Cha sauce is one of my fav!! Sa Cha sauce goes the best with "mei seen"Another fav combo of mine would be udon with oyster sauce.Their curry sauce is a bit spicy and very flavourful! :)Topping wise.. for lettuce they pour soy sauce over it. Salted cherry tomato is of a small portion. Sugar peas are nice and fresh and crunchy! Squid balls are a bit too tough.. not very "bouncy".. mushrooms are nice.. hmm what else, the other preserved meat options are not that great. Their lunch deals are great. Choice of 3 toppings + drink only $30.The "boss lady" can be super annoying but you just needa relax and step back and watch her as an entertainment. People who have dealt with her would know what I'm talking about! …Read More

a bit oily, a good indulgence!
Nam Kee Spring Roll Noodle Co. Ltd (Stanley Street)
2011-07-23
During week day lunch times, impossible to get seats, so always take away!Plenty of options. The famous fried egg roll I never ordered, but tried many other toppings, like beef tendons, fishballs, veggies, dumplings, etc.The soup base is a bit on the oily side compared to other "fun meen" places like "kiu heung yuun" nearby (which is why I prefer that place)The wait for the takeaway line could be a bit long so a lot of people actually call about 15 mins ahead of time and collect their orders later :)…Read More

never coming back again!
Nha Trang Vietnamese Cuisine
2011-07-23
Tried the TST branch awhile ago, which was pretty decent. Hence I was so shocked when my lunch was SO TERRIBLE.Order the dry mixed noodles "lo mong" with lemon grass beef. But guess what? The beef wasn't lemon grass viet style but it was chinese wok stir fry style which wouldn't be soo bad unless it wasn't SO oily with a puddle of oil swimming at the bottom!! I couldn't believe and the beef sort of "smells funny" as well.. gosh I'm so glad I didn't get terribly sick from the meal..Never again........:(…Read More

My go to place for wonton noodles in central!
Tsim Chai Kee Noodle (Wellington Street)
2011-07-23
There are only a few options here, wonton, siu gau, fish balls or beef, and a choice of noodles.Been in this branch quite a few times. My fav would be siu gau with rice noodles :) The plates are served super fast as their menu is limited. Siu gau is quite big and flavorful. With rice noodles it could be a bit bland hence I always pour a lot, and I mean A LOT of vinegar into the soup and it tastes awesome!!A side veggie is also decent portion, can have it with or without the fermented sauce.Service here is nice, BUT there's this one lady (maybe even the boss?) who has this super high pitch annoying voice!! It's piercing and sort of affects my appetite...In any case there's not a perfect place for wonton noodles anyway.. better withstand her voice and keep eating!…Read More

good wonton noodles~
Mak's Noodle (Wellington Street)
2011-07-23
i wonder which one is the more authentic one. This Mak's or the one opposite the street! One thing's for sure it's more expensive here In any case the noodles and wontons are very well cooked. The wontons are placed at the bottom of the bowl, with noodles on top, the old school way. The broth's quite flavorful. If you wanna get food stuffing yourself then this place ain't for you, but for some authentic wonton noodles that would give you some room for dessert this is the place! :)…Read More

been here a few times, all during weekday lunch time.. so not sure what it's like during dinner or during the weekends.. during week day lunch time it's friggin crazy! super crowded.tried different soup base of ramen and their broth's tooo oily a layer of oil layered on top..their milk soup base is not that milk, their tomato soup base's not that tomato-y.. basically most options are pretty much the same..service is not bad, but quite hard to flag down staff.all in all OK, if you prefer a richer oily-er broth.…Read More

Only OK for weekday lunch
老地方
2011-07-23
If it wasn't so difficult to get seats around Central during weekdays, I probably won't come here.In any case it's quite economical and the food ain't too bad.Their curry is TERRIBLE I was shocked by how bad the "curry" is. Basically there's hardly any curry powder/tumeric in there.. just plenty of flour mixed in. It didn't even taste like curry. Just 一pat野, really gross.Their soup noodle dishes are better, well, at least are decent.Their 碟頭飯 are OK. Just junk meat with lots of rice Will make you full for sure. What really bugs me about the place is that you gotta look for seats yourself, seats aren't assigned..…Read More
