Japanese Curry vs Indian Curry??
Shirokuma Curry
2014-06-22
As a curry lover, I dearly love to try all type of curry around the world. I sorely love Indian Curry - especially tikka masala - however Japanese curry is one of the curry which is on my top of the 'wish to try' list. There are plenty of cuisines in HK serves Japanese curries, but there's never a place in HK which can recapture the original taste of Japanese curry. I tries Shirokuma curry in Japan, it was nice to finally see a speciaility curry house establish in HK. One day as I was hunting for food at Maritime Square, Shirokuma curry strike me as I remembered my time at that curry house back in Japan. I ordered a grilled beef and onion curry rice (S7), with apple aloe honey. The presentation of the dish is very satifactory, however it's the only positive of the night. The taste is not especially brilliant, especially I can compare the taste with the dish I had at Japan. The curry itself is nowhere near as tasty as pervious, let alone the spiciness - which is not spicy at all - was disappointing. The rice and the fried beef are nothing particularly special. What I displease the most is that I require extra $10 for additional portion, of which a standard portion can't even enough to fill up a normal male adult! In the end the bill for one person comes at $114. I'm sure I'll have better food than that for this price. In summary, it's not fantastic but surely room for improvments., especially on the prices of dishes, so far it's getting a little ridiculous. Finally if I compare Japanese curry to Indian curry, based with the experience of Shirokuma,  I still perfer Indian, by a long way, at least, for this moment.…Read More

Australian delight!
The Bellbrook Bistro Oz by Laris
2014-06-22
In the past, I've always wondering the difference between Australian food and British food, despite the obvious difference is that Australia have kangaroos and Britian don't, but usually people believe there's not much difference, this is the thought that I have right until last Happy Friday, where 6 of us are making our very first trip to The Bellbrook and have out first ever Australian meal. The resturant itself is very heavily Western Australian gunslinger themed. Each table provide with chalk, which allows us to draw whatever on the table! Wall tiles are specially assumbled with an Western Australian poster images. Open kitchen makes the whole resturant more attractive and lively. Waiters are welcome and passionate which is nice for customers, feel warm and Australian. We are all wondering how the kangaroos will be taste like compare to all other meats, however, before we get to the main courses, we found out that the appetizers are fairly attractive as well - in terms of taste and ingredients combination - e.g. the watermelon salad, never before nor anyone can image watermelons can mix with olives, herbs and walnuts! The presentation of the dish took us by shock as we are all admire at this fantastic fusion combinations! The taste of the 'salad' are weird but totally acceptable, considering the courage of using walnuts and olives to accompany watermelon.Crisps are common snacks for all but they can become signature with some special combination. Twisties - a lightly salted crisps (very common) but in skewers and coated with cheese, that's all the difference but is one of the most favouite dishes of the restaurant, which the outlook is stunning and special, it also adjusted what supposingly to be ordinary lightly salted crisps completely into something else - in terms of taste. These dishes are aspiring, the black pork scotch eggs are one of the highly rated dishes by many catering magazines, along with the kangaroo loin. Like Twisties, the chefs are converting what supposingly an ordinary ingredients into something specticular, by coating a boil egg with mince pork makes the presentation and the taste of the whole dish into something that none of us can imagine. By and large, this is possibily our most favouite dish of the night.Come the main dishes, we are all looking forward on how the kangaroos will taste like, and it did not disappointed us, they are nicely roasted and very juicy, only slight negative of the dish is that the portions are too little, not seriously enough for 6 people. Then the Wagyu Flank steak, it was beautifully flame grilled, very juicy and tasty, the meat fibre is smooth and it comes with excellent charcoal taste, and it comes with lovely roast potatoes. But again, the portion is too little for 6 people, especially with the price of $348. There are a couple of desserts which are also signatures of the restaurant, The sticky date pudding is certainly one of them, it's fantastic to have a hot chocolate sponge cake comes with a ice cold chocolate sponge cake with vanilla ice cream. The presentation and the taste are good and we are all left the restaurant very satisfactory.…Read More

Loft Kitchen
2014-04-21
Last week we went to Loft Kitchen to celebrate our colleauge's birthday lunch. In fairness, it's quite hard to find the restaurant as its located at a secert location inside an old factory building. Unless you go there on purpose, it quite difficult for someone to walk in for a lunch. As expected, all tables are reserved for booking only, and it's always fully book! I have to book a table few days in advance! I was wondering why a restaurant with such a secert location can be that popular, however the quality of food and servicing gave me the reason...Loft Kitchen is promoting western fushion food, there's only a few set lunches available, but even take a look at the today's lunch menu makes me to imagine it will taste delicious  especially the main courses. The appetizer are either tomato soup or fresh salad... I wasn't best please why can I have both both the salad is nice, despite a fair small potion. The tomato soup actually taste very good, lots of tomato puree and most importantly, not too thick. The moment of the meal - the main course - majority of us went for Spring Chicken provencal with fried potato ($88). A big nicely balanced roasted chicken with bread crumbs spread on top, serve with gravy and fried potato and a little bit of veg. Even looking at the dish can sense it taste awesome, and it did! The chicken legs are juicy and nicely roasted, comes with gravy makes it perfect. The roasted chicken legs is so big that most ladies are struggle to finish it off!Slow cooked pork loin with mushroom sauce ($86) is another English alike dishes, I suddenly feel like being back to England! But myself went for a tomato beef risotto, I'm a huge fan of risotto and this dish appeals to me. It's a beautiful but funny dish at first glance - a small potion of risotto serve with a bowl that looks like it can have a capacity 3 times more than current amount of risotto - nevertheless, the risotto is nicely cooked, but maybe too watery, however the balance of getting this right for a risotto dish is difficult, therefore it's an extremely good effort, still there's room for improvment, as in Italy or Spain the chefs classified this as basic The what matter most is the taste - very good - I also like the diced beef very much, not to chewy, nicely cooked. The open kitchen offers us a view of the busy kitchen and also provides a bar table for alternative seatings, as well as there are seating outdoors as well. The prices are typically expensive compare to other Kwun Tong restaurants, but the theory - the more you pay, the better you'll get - it true regarding to Loft Kitchen. So it's expensive, but well worth it!In conclusion, this is a good dining experience, I enjoy it very much, definitely will come again sometime. …Read More

Factory surprise
Factory 99
2014-04-21
My Office is located at Kwun Tong, however where to go for lunch is always a headache. Despite there are so many different restaurants in Kwun Tong, Factory 99 is rated as one of the most popular restaurant for local office workers for a good reasons. Every lunchtime there's always a huge queue outside the restautant and its no coincidence. One of the most pleasing aspect is that the speed of their service is so swift, which is a very improtant thing for office workers as lunchbreaks are not that long. The food itself is very fine standard indeed. starting with a huge selection of lunch menu. I particularly like the Factory 99 homemade burger - its a truly a huge beef burger - a juicy half pounder with melted cheese and onions, serve with chips and salad, it just tastes good and satisfying. Also the portion is so big that surely will fill me up for the rest of the day.Other choice from the menu are very popular indeed, here to point out a few:The curry - I first don't expect it to be too spicy but it did! Chicken curry serve with nann are so good - in terms of spicness - feeling like an Indian fusion food. Definitely one for spicy lovers. The steak - Expect a large piece of juicy steak for less than $100! Where else can you find it!However due it its popularity and crowdness it's a very noisy place to be, this is not an ideal place for private discussions and chats as well as all seats are jam packed. That makes the whole dining experience uncomfortable. But overall, I classify Factory 99 is one of my favouite place to dine in for lunch.  …Read More

Tai Fung Lau Peking Restaurant
2014-03-16

A special grilling experience
Iroha
2014-03-02
I'd heard of Iroha a long long time, finally me and my friend have this pleasure to visit and try this restaurant, and it hadn't disappointed us.To be honest, there are many many good quality restaurants in Causeway Bay but this is surely among the best - in terms of the freshness and the quality of the food - this is truly delicious.Let's forget about the price, it's a frightening figure for those who only expect to spend around $100-200 per meal, but in the end, it's worth that expensive though. Two of us ordered a set of Japanese beefs (日本和牛) and 厚切牛舌, along with 煎蠔餅, and those had fill us up well for the night.Every piece of the raw beef are cut and dice almost into similar size, and it's ultimalty fresh - doesn't look like frozen beef at all - the balance of fat and meat on beef are good. Place those on the grill ourselves - I personally like the beef to be cook around 50% - 60% - it is possibility the most delicious beef I ever tried! The taste and the feel is amazing, I can sense it once I chew it and when it accompaned with soy sauce, that taste of 'pure' beef just stay in my mouth, the taste is just unforgettable. If anyone who has demand in high quality for food - especially beef - should give it a try, certianly for us, this is a good experience. Despite it quite expensive, its certainly worth it.

An extrodinary Indian meal in Chungking Mansion
P.M. CLUB
2013-10-20
One of the favorite cuisine I ever been to is an Indian cuisine, I’d developed an special interest for Indian food ever since my time in UK. Indian cuisine is extremely popular in UK and there are many excellent Indian cuisines around London etc. They all are extremely high in standard in terms of food quality, interiors and services. So when I came back to Hong Kong, I’d been always looking for an Indian cuisine which can replicate the high standards of UK’s Indian cuisine. Many people may think Chungking Mansion is a lousy place, but to me, it’s a catering paradise! Especially for someone who loves Indian (Halal) food. One day, I decide to date my dear friends to one of the Indian cuisine in Chungking Mansion because I miss Indian food so much. However I realized a couple of my friend never had Indians before because they can’t eat anything spicy. Of course, for those who understand curry, not every curry are spicy e.g. Korma etc. I managed to persuade them to join our curry night because I believe Indian food is one of the most exciting foods we can find in the world. My friend recommended me to P.M Club, so I decide to have a try.Basically, almost every Indian cuisine in Chungking Mansion is excellent in quality, of course before you get into any cuisine in the Mansion; you have to get through a lot of foreigners who always lurking around at the entrance of Chungking Mansion to persuade people to pay a visit their cuisines. My suggestion is that don’t ignore them because they always serve you some bargains which you will never going to expect before – 20% VIP cards, free drinks etc.The waiters and chefs in P.M Club are very friendly, very passionate; they greet us all the way and recommended anything good from the menu. Remember that a couple of my friends which cannot eat spicy, they recommended lots of suggestions to them as well, so we were very well serviced and accommodated. The cuisine itself is lightly decorated, with a very warm feel of a typical Indian home.Poppadoms are always the starters to any Indian food. I love these poppadoms because it had a sense of pepper taste. The sauces which come with the poppadoms are very nice as well - I especially like the mango chuney. It will built you up for the further ‘challenges’ ahead nicely!First to come is chicken tandoori, it is this best chicken tandoori I ever had! The chicken is very attractively cooked, it was served on an iron plate, the whole dish is very attractive and the smell is just so good that once it arrived on our table I can’t help to grab myself a piece of chicken! The taste, the juiciness of the chicken is absolutely superb, it’s just taste so nice that the taste of the herbs, peppers, chilies can all taste in one go, and a very large portion of chickens as well.Full marks, absolutely no negative. I’ll highly recommend this dish to everybody.Because I know not everyone can eat spicy, so we had order kormas, tikka masala, rogan josh, saagwala, bhuna, dopiaza. Out of these curries rogan josh is the spiciest out of the lot (I personally fancy a madras or vindaloo because I love spicy but I do care about my friends). Still, I love the curries which we had ordered, especially the mutton rogan josh, the lamb was cooked so nicely that the sauce was well absorbed into the lamb and the sauce was just amazing, fair bit of spiciness with a strong taste of tomato paste. The chicken korma also we loved very much (Maybe because korma is not spicy) the taste of yogurts and coconut milk makes the curry very delicious and attractive. This is the first time I had chicken saagwala, it’s a curry which base on spinach, and it’s a tasty, nutritious and healthy dish. I’m actually amazed as the first impression that I never had a curry that look so green before, aside the outlook of the dish, the taste is simply amazing, the chicken is tenderly cooked; the hint of spiciness of the sauce and the taste of spinach was so good that this can be my most favorite curry dish of the night. To complete a perfect Indian meal, rice and naan are essential. We had order Indian fried rice and all sorts of different naans (butter naan, garlic naan, cheese naan, mutton naan and onion naan), yet all the naans we ordered are excellent, they are all freshly baked and very well baked, not one piece of naan is overcooked and they all bold very well with the curries. Simply no words can describe how delicious the foods were.In the end, the bill is $839 (including 10% VIP discount) for 7 people. Consider with all the delicious food we had, the services they provided, it’s an absolute bargain. We all enjoy the food, enjoy the services, and simply enjoy the night. When we leave the owner of the cuisine offer all of us a VIP card and a handshake. This sum up how friendly and passionate they are, maybe it’s a part of their culture but for us, we like it very much and defiantly will come again.…Read More

Lung Chuen Private Kitchen
2013-10-14
Surely must come again!!Highly recommend!…Read More

Toi Hokkaido Rice Pizza
2013-10-06

Oasis Cafe
2013-10-02

A classy Japanese lunch, especially in Central
Daikiya Japanese Restaurant
2013-10-01
To find a place to eat in Central during lunchtime is always a nightmare. Therefore I always hate to have lunch in Central during peak hours. My friend recommended Wellington Place's Daikiya for our lunch dating, I reveseved a table 3 days in advance. So don't need to wait for a table. However it was fully booked when I turn up on the day! So i'm lucky I'm SO SMART to booked it 3 days in advance, nevertheless, I still can't believe there's so many people...Once got in the restaunant, I find the seatings are so packly tight that I don't even have room to put my sportsbag anywhere near me A very typical restaurant in Central - very expensive - a cheapest set lunch is at least $88! Talk about the food, the quality is defintly worth that amount though, all the ingredients are very fresh and look good- quite attractive can be the word to use.
