I love drinking soup. And as I live alone and have a pretty hectic work schedule, I don't often have time to make Chinese soup. Chinese soup takes hours to make and it fairly time consuming. Thus, I'm always for the look out for a place that offers Chinese soups. I've tried a few places and decided to try out 椰粉湯紅 (English name: Coco Soup).Located near Southern Playground in Wanchai, is a small restaurant serving coconut based soups and meals.Menu is in English and Chinese. Located near Southern Playground in Wanchai, is a small restaurant serving coconut based soups and meals.
Menu is in English and Chinese. There is no 10% service charge. The menu isn't very big but there is a decent selection.
They also have a soup of the day if you are not interested in their coconut based soups. These are served in a small paper cup.
They only offered a couple of soup when we were there. I wonder if they wanted to keep the quality consisten so they only made certain soups each day? As I wanted soup, we chose a coconut based soup. This is the Papaya, Chinese pear, apple, Frittillaria bulb and chicken ($68).
The soup was packed with ingredients. The broth was clear yet intense. Usually this combination of soup is on the sour and fruity side but here it wasn't. It was a lot more savory with a hint of fruit. And most surprising was the chicken was still moist despite being cooked for so long.
I ordered a passion fruit, wolfberries and lime drink ($24) as I wanted something to take with me to work later. This came in a very good plastic bottle that I kept later. The drink was very good. Refreshing yet sweet. Lots of wolfberries was aded as well.
They had meals so I ordered a Hainan chicken coconut fragrant rice set ($76). I had no idea it came with a plate of vegetables! Also, the usual Hainan chicken soup was actually a cup of the daily soup! The chicken was not boneless but it was still flavorful and moist. It came with a dipping sauce that was a bit spicy. The rice was really good. Not too oily but with a strong taste of coconut.
The best was the soup of the day. I really didn't expect the set to include the soup of the day. It was Lion's Main Mushroom, burdock and black bean soup. Very savory and intense. Definitely the star of this whole thing.
Boyfriend ordered the Lightly Grilled Sugar Crusted Pork Neck in Coconut Fragrant Omelette Rice ($68). The pork neck was sweet with crystalized sugar. It came with a small plate of coconut milk which the staff informed us to mix it with the rice which we did. And it really made a difference. The egg was pretty to look at and not over cooked.
Overall, the soup was really good. The food was also just as good. Prices are not expensive and definitely value for money. The place may be small but it was cutely decorated. Would definitely be back.
