It was the hottest day on record in Hong Kong just this weekend, nonetheless, Fashion Walk was packed inside and out at every restaurant. Friend and I arrived slightly after the first round of customers had seated but we were dying for ice cold drinks so we just went for whichever restaurant available (and Cedele’s menu looked light and straight forward. The weather was seriously killing our appetite). We made do with an outside table near the entrance. The off-white illumining restaurant name (signage) was quite blinding though.

Initially I wanted a chilled glass of white wine but Cedele served just a short list of craft beer and cider. We took the only 2 beer choices and they tasted alright (just a bit sad that they were NOT as cold as we wanted). Well, it was buy 1 get 1 on a Friday night so, not complaining.

We settled for some starters and munchies. The sesame teriyaki tofu with bonito flakes and seaweed, and the spiced pork sausages with mustard seeds were the only 2 dishes we found acceptable.

Sweet potato fries with chermoula herb and honey yogurt – served piping hot and the herbs were a good effort to make normal sweet potato fries different. Disappointingly, 2/3 of the batch was too soft and was pretty much wilting in the container. Our fingers were shining with oil (most likely because the frying oil was not hot enough when they swooped out the fries). We ended up using ketchup instead because the honey yogurt was too sweet to go with the, already sweet, potato… and when you put the 2 together, the yogurt tasted strangely fragrant, like air freshener.

The Cucumber seaweed salad with lemongrass chili lime sauce was the “highlight”. I was the first to take a bite and laughed out loud immediately: “Ohohoh, I know this taste!!!” My friend then gave it a try and we both high-fived - MOSQUITO REPELLENT!

The dish was a shock to the system no matter how many times we tried it; every piece of cucumber made our nostrils flared. No idea what lemongrass they used (perhaps in some form of “essence”) but it was no different than taking a can (mosquito spray) straight in the mouth. I felt totally safe from any insects for the rest of the night.

The servers were nice to move us inside the restaurant half way through the meal. Praise the lord for air-con but still, I would like to spend my calorie budget elsewhere.
