In case you were about to write me an email and question me - Nope I have never stolen and then eaten a Doggie's lunch box before! 新年盆菜 - Cafe de Coral's Chinese New Year's Platter isn't cheap, at around $580 its nearly on par with other famed restaurants or 盆菜 Specialty shops. Cafe de Coral's Chinese New Year's Platter isn't cheap, at around $580 its nearly on par with other famed restaurants or 盆菜 Specialty shops. However this came with a fair bit of abalone, prawns, goose web feet, taro, beancurd dumplings, pork rind, roasted pork, dried oysters, turnip, roasted duck, broccoli, etc, etc. Its ok actually, but then again how wrong can u go with this type of dish? Its just simple fare! 3.8/5
挪威三文海鮮焗飯 -
On TV Commercials and their posters, this looked rather tempting, don't you guys agree? But in real life, this was dull and grey, much like the face of some druggie on a perennial over-dose and both bloodless and life-less. The so-called Salmon was over cooked and stale, also fishy, and it had way smaller pieces than I saw on the photo. The octopus tentacles and body somehow, miraculously, managed to become fishy as well! The mussel was again grey, probably dead for years and resembling a fossil. The rice was mushy and wet. The whole baked rice in fact was tepid cold at best. I actually never felt that Cafe de Coral is that bad to be honest, its just deceiving once in a while. This is a prime example. 1/5.
焗豬扒飯 -
Baked Porkchop rice on the other hand, is one of de Coral's specialties! Granted its not great everytime, but the pork is usually not overly chemically pre-treated before frying in crumbs batter. The rice in this particular dish was ok dryish and not too 'wet'. The sauce however seemed a little commercial and sour. Not bad at all. 3.8/5

What has me come back all the time however, is de Coral's HK Tea and Coffee quality. Ok - I don't really drink their coffee, but when I do out of curiosity as long as its been mixed with their evaporated milk with vegetable fat, its not bad and also aromatic enough, being freshly grinded (don't treat this as an endorsement!). However the HK Tea is also quite good usually - and thats expected, knowing that there is a dedicated Quality Assurance team in the group, which travels to outlets regularly and all the brewing time, temperatures, proportions are fixed to a formula which are strictly adhered to.
OVERALL - CAFE DE CORAL CAN SERVE SOME PRETTY TERRIBLE FOOD ONCE IN A WHILE. LIKE MAL-NUTRITIONED PORK CHOP BUNS, RUBBERY NZ STEAKS. AND NOW, A GREY COLOURED SEAFOOD RICE THAT WAS AS TERRIBLE AS BLACK AND WHITE!
