Out of all itz chains, the Wan Chai shop is the one I visit the most. Go there mostly for gatherings with a whole gang. Cheap beer mate!!

Overall comment after visiting 10+ times is - A good value for money place. If you don't wanna spend several hundred per person at places like 本色/英記, and you don't wanna go budget at all-you-can-eat places, go to 小肥牛 la.

First things first, the soup-base. See the caption? That concludes like 80% of what I wanna say. They always tell which and which is special and you don't get to try it else where, e.g. 魚翅, 海底椰. Sad to say is, what sounds special is not exactly too special - the flavors just don't stand out - and I must say soup is not their strength. Rather, go for the more "homey" choices like 牛腩 or tomato soups. The ingredients are surprisingly fresh and I find them alot more enjoyable.

Quality-wise, the beef is nothing as compared with places like 金牌. But hey, let's face it - 88 bucks for a plate of beef - what do you wanna expect right? So for the 手切牛, 合格有餘, good!

Another reason I say so in the caption is based on that plate of angus beef that costs 10 bucks. Yeah it's pretty good, but what's the point when the slices are like paper thin? 到喉唔到肺. And seriously, I believe charging 10 bucks for a plate of paper isn't exactly appealing to the supporters of the restaurant, nor it has any attractiveness. I'd rather you charge me more for something decent.

Rather, I strongly recommend the 花彫肥牛. The combination is quite special and the flavors are distinct n remarkable. Delish~~

Other stuff are the common things you see for hot pots, with quality all above average and items like 鯊魚咀, 墨魚滑 n 炸腐皮 do stand out. The special "balls" like cheese-beef balls are quite nice too. And another remarkable thing is - they let you do your own sauces with a platter of 蒜 n 椒絲 etc. Yes it should be a must-have in higher-end hotpots but it is still pleasing to find it here.

In conclusion, 小肥牛 is a strong player and a good choice amongst the mid-range hotpot chains, with itz quality and variety of food choice constantly above standard. I do look forward to seeing the chain removing "redundant" items (like the 10-bucks beef -_-) Save these costs and focus more on enhancing the quality of the soup-base and beef. Much more appealing.
