continue reading

continue reading

continue reading

It is Hong Kong’s only organic herb garden. The garden is a lustrous fusion of over 40 types of herbs with their names written in Chinese and English on colorful recycled glass bottles, a black rabbit and a white rabbit and a brown rabbit lounging or digging or climbing up a big tire in a huge long cage, a tent displaying all kinds of herb products in varied sizes with prizes ranging from HK$20 to HK$60, and a tea tent for customers to enjoy a short escape from time with a cup of hot herb tea or a glass of cold one. The tea tent is decorated with numerous sparkling handicrafts, an old refrigerator-turned bookshelf and pots of herbs clustering on the center of the low, square tables made of bamboo. As if framed into a still life painting, the tent shimmers with a piece of soft, soothing piano music flowing and murmuring in the air.I was too lazy to go through the long list of herbs and their benefits. When I saw the names of two kinds of cold tea written on the small blackboard, I thought a cup of cold tea would just do me good since I’d felt really hot and thirsty. So I ordered a cup of German chamomile tea with stevia. Then I saw on another small blackboard beside that I can get two low fat, low sugar cookies adding HK$15 – well, not cheap, but again good for me, a huge fan of cookie, so I also ordered the cookies. Cold Tea: German Chamomile with Stevia (HK$30)The appearance of the tea was appealing already – a small glass full of golden-brown liquid with four cubes of ice floating on the surface, three green leaves frozen inside the ice cubes, tiny crystal water drops covering the glass like dews – it almost looked like a piece of art made of frozen amber.Careful not to ruin the delicate beauty, I took a sip, and the natural sweetness immediately spread all over my tongue. It was a bit cloying though – I guess it may be the natural aggressiveness of plants. When the ice cubes melted, a piece of leaf floated into my mouth with tea. Chewing the leaf tenderly, I felt a minty sweetness lingering in my mouth, so refreshing! Lemongrass and Rosemary Cookies (HK$15)I waited for a few minutes for the cookies. I don’t know if the cookies were freshly baked, but it made me happy that they were served in warmth. They were not very puffy and cakey, nor crumbling or chewy. The texture of them were somewhere between a cracker and a cookie. They didn’t have a rich buttery flavor. Instead, the flavor of herbs stood strong. They were not sweet either, but I never expected them to be sweet, because it was stated clearly on the blackboard that the cookies are low fat and low sugar. Even though I love cookies with a lot of butter (yes, it’s super fatty), I certainly enjoyed this special taste of nature and health. But I’m not sure if everyone can enjoy the taste as I did.Gary and Gavin are the owners of the garden. Before starting the garden in 2003, they were designers living and working in the mainland of Hong Kong.
