As mentioned in my Ying Kee Restaurant review, the High Street area is filling up with new places, and last time I visited, Awakening Cafe caught my eye, so I dropped by early on a Sunday morning to try it.The entrance was on a spacious terrace next to a flight of escalators going through Center Street. It was perfect al fresco weather, if only they had outdoor seating... The servers were busy setting out the tables as I walked in, but managed to cheerfully whisk me to a seat. The place felt more pub than Cafe: Beer bottles lined the kitchen window, funny signs with smart comments plastered one side of the wall and the other side was a chalkboard. The menu was greasy and South American: burgers, fried steak, gravy gravy gravy everywhere and recently they started serving *gasp* Chicken n Waffles! Not for the health-conscious (they did have salads on the menu, though) but perfect for my bring-it-I-can-eat-a-cow mood that particular morning. I didn't care what I ate - I had been balling all morning and was famished - as long as it was BIG.The 2 Biscuits with Gravy ($55) with a side of two eggs and home fries (+$40) did not disappoint - the biscuits were light and crunchy, even while enveloped in a pool of gravy. The white gravy was a pale, creamy bechamel sauce that tasted even heavier and meatier than its brown gravy counterpart thanks to the chunks of meat in it; heart-clogging and addictive at the same time! My sunny side up eggs were decent, and its neighbor, the potatoes were delicious, they were less fried than what you would find at an actual diner, perhaps to balance out the heaviness of the gravy biscuits, but done just right so that the texture was firm but not raw, and there was a good seasoning of peppercorns in it to provide some character, allowing the flavor of the potatoes to stand out even against the gravy. This proved to be addicting, and I shovelled the entire contents into my mouth in three, four satisfying scoops. The Country Fried Steak ($85) was like the biscuits, smothered in sausage gravy, and in generous portions. It was fried to a crisp inside and very crunchy upon bite. The steak was fat and juicy, you could taste the beef despite the strong gravy. This was a high sodium, high fat but unapologetically-so, and highly enjoyable breakfast dish. Eggs and fries that came with it were the same as the ones with the biscuits, and equally enjoyable.I walked out feeling happy, stuffed, and slightly guilty after that sinful food. But when I later learned of all the community activities, fund-raising (they have beer for books events, omg) and general positiveness they aim to bring to the community, my guilt was erased. You are not just doing yourself a favor by coming here, you are also helping out the society. I shall definitely return again to stuff my face *ahem, I mean, help the community...:||Good For||::Comfort food in a friendly atmosphere and vibrant neighborhood

What's better than going for brunch on a nice weekend!Awakening cafe is a friendly, cozy and welcoming place. The interior is like a crossover of a coffee shop and a diner. The 5 of us were greeted by the owner himself immediately and were brought to a table inside. What we ordered:1. BBQ Burger- It was okay. The patty was a bit dry and there was a bit too much BBQ sauce, which was overpowering. The waffle fries that came with the burger were fresh and crunchy.2. Chilli burger - In comparison to the BBQ Burger, this burger seemed to be less flavourful. Maybe if you were to order the two together, have this first. However, both burgers were really fresh. 3. Omelet (The pub)- This omelet had beer battered shrimps, cheese and tomatoes in it I think. It was really cheesy and filling. All omletes come with a piece of toast (your chioce of white or brown), hashbrown and some fresh fruit. 4. Eggs Benedict (Ham)- This was the best dish of all. We chose ham over smoked salon and bacon. It also, came with fresh fruit as well. The hollandaise sauce was rich, creamy and flavourful.  Also, the ham was thick and tasty. It wasn't your typical deli ham. The only thing I would add, is that the servicer should have asked me how I would like my eggs.  As well as the proportion seemed a bit small. 5. Iced lemon tea- unlimited refill Overall, it is a place worth trying but I think they need more staff as service was slow.

We finally visited this place yesterday: What a find! Really welcoming atmosphere, great food, and charming hosts. I had the meatloaf, which is twice-cooked: first baked, then -- and this is crucial -- pan-seared, turning what's usually a comforting, mushy mess into something crispy and interesting. Great gravy, too. My partner ordered the Santa Fe salad, which is indeed gigantic, as others have mentioned. The spice-rubbed chicken breast was cooked to juicy perfection, served with a huge portion of greens. The only thought we had was that we might ask for the dressing on the side next time; it's a fairly thick, creamy ranch so they have to use quite a lot of it to cover the whole salad. The hostess is also a realtor so she uses the placemats to advertise her listings. Brilliant idea! And the couple also operate a small NGO in Yunnan that sources coffee and tea for them, aiding economic development for ethnic minorities. We're looking forward to making this a regular spot for us.

AwakeningSo if you are in Hong Kong and you are vegetarian, you are pretty much lost if you don’t want to eat chicken broth or pay huge amounts for small portions..So hungry and grumpy as I was walking in Sai Ying Pun – and there it was: Awakening. The placeYou walk in a space with a nice vibrant atmosphere. The posters on the wall give a living room effect and there are huge chalkboard walls where you can get very creative or being inspired by proverbs and drawings. It is possible to sit there with some friends/family (kids can draw) or alone without feeling uncomfortable. The service is good, nice people who will make you feel at home and don’t yell at you once you finished your food. The menuSo what’s on the menu? Burgers and BEER! Yay! Nothing is better than (veggie) burgers and beer (San Miguel, Budweiser, Hoegaarden and many more (including many American beers). For the non-vegetarians, you can order Buffalo wings, BBQ ribs, chicken(fingers) and steak. I haven’t tried those dishes, so I can’t tell much about it (heard good stories though). You should try them out for yourself. The salads and the veggie burger are really good though. The burger is a bit crispy from the outside and soft inside, containing different vegetables. They also put some humus on the burger, yummie! Together with the fries you will fill full after your meal. For the healthy people, the salads are pretty nice, they are bit big though, so you can also decide to share one salad with some people next to your own dish, to get your healthy fill for the day. PriceTalking about fills, they give free refills! Meals are around the $80-130. The restaurant is open during lunch and dinner (closed on Monday).
