Little gem of a coffee and baked goods place in Wanchai. The coffee comes with a  freshly baked cookie. Must try the Lemon Meringue tart. Owner bakes all goods in the bakery upstairs from the store. Great place to hide from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. Must try the fruit cake too.

I can't call this a fully unbiased review; the owner of Pomme is a friend-of-a-friend and I've been hearing wonderful things about the sweets there for almost a year. DH and I showed up before dinner in order to properly spoil our appetites. I was feeling a bit dragon-esque and made it my goal to not leave until I had achieved total chocolate overload. We skimmed the menu, thinking to take advantage of the cake-and-a-drink combo, except that we each wound up with two cakes and a drink. Husbandy got a Fraoula (apparently the Greek word for "strawberry") and a mango cheesecake with a small pot of Earl Grey tea. My approach was to choose everything brown on the menu, which netted me a Coco, a Trio, and a mug of Pomme's extra-rich hot chocolate. All four of the cakes were spot on. The Fraoula was light and airy, the mango cheesecake tart and crisp. The Coco was chocolate through and through, with aerated nuggets on top and a fudgier filling, topped with a hazelnut. Now, I'd thought the Trio was largely a chocolate cake as well, but it turned out there was a chestnut profiterole hiding under that dark chocolate glaze. My fault for not asking the server, but a really well-executed cake nonetheless. The pot of Earl Grey was hands-down the best that I've found in Hong Kong to date, good enough that we bought a box of whatever it was to drink at home. Really floral aroma, full flavor, no bitterness at all. Now, I'm giving the drinks four stars overall, but here's why. A good Parisian chocolat chaud rides the edge of richness, and a person should be able to get through the cup without feeling urpy. I found mine a bit overpowering--I almost swore I was drinking melted butter, not milk--and had to enlist help in finishing it off. Now granted, take my opinion with a grain of salt because the two cakes may very well have contributed to my pancreas's meltdown. In any case, I wouldn't really recommend pairing this drink with anything else that has chocolate; it's a bit much. Better to enjoy it with a savory dish, I bet.Pomme is really a great venue overall, with a varied menu, tasteful décor, and generally sharp service--we experienced no table wait time and received our items quickly after placing our order. There was a service glitch when we added our takeaway order at the end; the server misunderstood what we were asking for and started brewing the tea rather than packaging it to go, and then I think we wound up paying for the wasted tea bag. I say that I think so because they didn't even print an updated receipt for us. It's doubtful that things like this happen very often, but it nevertheless marred our otherwise perfect evening out.
