    a disappointing dinner Cries Jul 20, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Last night, my husband and I had the 4-course set dinner at Mistral. Since they never change the menu for the whole year, I would not be interested if not because of the many good previous reviews.

The dinner started with bread which was warm and good. Then came the cheese with speck ham which was good. However, the following courses were very disappointing! The second course of tagliolini with lobster was well below average. If the menu did not say it was lobster, I could not tell there was lobster. There were only a few (maybe 3) very tiny dices of lobster flesh which were very dry and rough and had no lobster taste. The tagliolini was a bit too soft and not tasty.

The third course was cod fish for me and beef cheek for my husband. The cod fish had its natural smooth texture but not much taste. The baby cuttlefish was too salty. The beef cheek, while quite tasty, did not have the black truffle taste at all. I did not realize that the beef cheek was cooked with black truffle until I checked the menu today. What a failure! The beef cheek has been cooked so long that the whole thing was completely broken up easily.

Finally, the panna cotta was also disappointing. It was just ordinary.

I am most unhappy about the size of the second and third courses. They were of the size for a 10-course degustation menu! But it was only a 4-course dinner! If we did not have the bread and ask for more bread, we would be starving.

Given the tiny size and the ordinary dishes, the dinner at Mistral does not worth its price (which is not high in absolute term). Even though Pierre, Amber, Petrus, and Caprice (Caprice is not good now after getting the Michelin 3 star) etc. charge more than double the amount for their degustation menu, I would rather take my dinner in these restaurants which serve far better foods.

What’s more, Mistral does not provide good service. Even though my husband had finished his water for a long time, they did not refill water. When we told them to refill water, the waiter simply took away the glass and did not come back!

The deco is very homey italian. The services were great. The waiters / waitresses were all very helpful and very initiative in offering their help. I was recommended a very nice glass of Italian red wine from Veneto.

The food was better than average. I particularly liked the baked scallops and risotto. (Sorry but my phone's camera is way too crap) The sea bass we had was however, not so great.

Also tried the "famed" chocolate cake. I am not so into desserts and did not find it so famed as it claims.

The food was overall, nice, but it's still too expensive. It tasted more like food around $350 per head. And, we already used the openrice.com's coupon!!!!!

I would say it is a decent and comfortable place for friends gathering and couple dating. As the restaurant is located at Hotel's basement, it is a bit vault- like, and specially decorated with plates and bottles of village style.

Although it names itself the "Sunday Brunch", it's more like a lunch buffet - the variety of dishes is really impressive, besides diverse appetizer (variety of Parma ham and cold meet), insalata, goose liver (instantly cooked), oyster, pizza(instantly cooked), pasta (including Ravioli, Fettuccini, etc, instantly cooked) and dessert, you can also order main course such as Sirloin steak, beef medallion, steak with shrimp and lamb chop, salmon roll, mussel and omelette etc.

I love the oyster - freshly opened only upon request, they were really fresh and creamy. For pasta, I like the Fettuccini one, the texture was good. Goose liver is worth trying but I think the outside should be more "crispy". Sirloin steak was good, too. Omelette (with spinach, mushroom and goat cheese) was nicely cooked, with strong egg scent lol. Desserts are attractive, like the lemon cake, the strawberry mousse cake, berries mousse.

After intaking those heavy portion tongue , it's nice to serve with their coffee. The cup was nice, made of pottery and painted in blue with patterns. Not only because of the strong scent of roasted coffee beans impressed me, but also the cup's ability to retain coffee temperature high for a long period did.

A very nice place for dating/ anniversary celebration lol. Boy friend like the arrangement (Happy Birthday again, dearest lol).

When the bill came, it reminded me that quality always positively correlates with price. Suddenly come back to earth and reality....It's lucky that I had printed and used the Open rice Sunday Brunch 75% discount coupon lol

Good Italian Ham Smile Sep 21, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Went there for a semi-buffet lunch after an interview.

Buffet appetizer only is $188, with an entree it was around $218/228, with dessert buffet I think it was another $10.

Since I wasn't too interested in the entree selection, I chose to have only the appetizer, which not only fills you up but the food is quite tasty!

The selection includes different kinds of cured meat (parma ham, salami, turkey, tongue, etc), smoked salmon, beef carpacio, tuna carpacio, various kinds of veggies, fritata, and a salad bar. I really enjoyed the parma ham and smoked salmon ~ not too salty with a nice texture.

The place doesn't get very crowded so it's definitely a good place for a quiet lunch. For those who are into nice cured meats, this is quite a good place to go. For those who doesn't care much for cured meats, this place might seems overpriced.

    A Family Gathering Smile Jun 29, 2005

I went to this restaurant for family dinner last week. Although I have never been there personally, I have long heard about the expensive menu and the "free plate" that you will receive after tasting the restaurant signature dish..

First of all, Wine Menu - a set of reasonably priced Italian Fine Wine, have opened a bottle of Aramone at HKD 800, which is the same price as the same bottle at Knutsford Terrance, full body with good aroma, a good recommendation from the staffs indeed.

Food - the signature dish - Lobster Sphagetti, is average, Lobster is fresh, added with hand-made pasta on tomato sauce, the overall taste is quite good indeed, but priced at HKD 280?, is a bit too much...On the other hand, steak and sea bass is below standard... but one dish that I must recommend to all, is the Rack of Lamb, nicely marinated, with two chuck of garlics sandwiched inside the rack of lamb, it gives the lamb a great favour indeed... and it is only HKD 250...

n a nutshell, some od the dishes and services are good here, but with the decorations as such, and marked-up heavily, I think there are more valuable choices elsewhere.... yet... I do miss the Rack of Lamb there
