A popular and well known eatery and most of the time, very difficult to find a spare table. When I come here I normally dine for one, it's like a guilty pleasure as I know I should be able to find a seat straightaway and slowly devour the food.

I have been here perhaps less than 5 times but the Roasted Pork - the taste of the skin and the meat is superb. It's slightly different to other roasted pork, the colour is not as orange as others but it's all about the taste. This time I had the cha sui and the meat was succulent, full of flavour and not too sweet or salty. Tea you can pour yourself, as well as the sauce.

For $25 for 1 sui mei with rice, it's really unbeatable value.

The seating is cramped, but that doesn't matter as all-in-all, it's a fine place to enjoy the food.

Went there at around 3:30, was half full so we got a table right away. I've always seen reviews about this restaurant being inexpensive. Since I'm just a normal low paying citizen who loves 叉燒 (BBQ pork), gotta try this!

First sat down.. Thought there would be a handheld menu but no, only posters and it's in Chinese only so good luck. It's downright simple, disk or bowl, 1 choice or 2 choices of meat, it's only $24. All soft drinks and soup are only $6. So this amazing delicious meal I had is only $30.

Although its 2 blocks out from the Wan Chai MTR, this was worth walking for even under this nasty summer!

The roasted ribs looked good at the counter so bought some.
I was looking forward to eating them off the bone but I did not know that when you order them they are chopped into smaller pieces.
Anyway it tastes the same as the Roast pork there but the meat is dry and firm.

Last week I was planning to buy food from Joy Hing, however the day I was supposed to go I had gastroenteritis, the next day I was still throwing up food so I couldnt go, then the following two days I was not in town.
Today I finally went but the item I wanted was unavailable, so I ordered pork trotters in abalone sauce with rice and a side of chicken feet in abalone sauce.
However when I took the contents out from the bag, I realised I was given soup instead.I called them up and was surprised that I could come back for a refund or collect the dish at a later time.Anyway, when I went, I was impressed that they kept records of my phonecall and the details.
Not many Chinese restaurants will bother with customer service especially when they have a good reputation of customers.

When I went, it was my first time dining because I usually get takeouts.On the table there were disposable chopsticks and spoons, and they even had tea on the table and paper cups.
As well as that, there was a big jug of soy sauce to pour on the roast meat if you felt that it was not salty enough.

Most Chinese roast meals are unhealthy, but I felt that this one was quite healthy, at least they did not pour oily soy sauce or have roast meats tasting like syrup.
The accompanying spring and ginger sauce was not salty as well.

This was the takeaway I had. After walking approximately 10 minutes on a windy cold road, the rice was amazingly hot that it burnt my mouth!
It was about 10 degrees that day, and I am surprised the rice was still piping hot.
The pigs trotter were hairless and soft that they came off the bone easily.
The abalone sauce was not the thick sauce I was expecting but a watery one.

The rice was not as hot as the takeaway but just right.
The roast pork here is slightly different to the roast pork from other places, it it slightly crispy and glazed on the outside.
It has a few spots that are charred which seem to be a result of real spit fire roasting and not the electric roasting.
The centre of the roast pork is soft and juicy and not overly sweet or salty.
As for the chicken liver, it was surprisingly silky in the centre with the occaisional crispy bits that have been charred on the outside.
The livers also had chicken hearts attached to it which I should of tried.

This tasted the same as the pork trotters, however the chicken feet were smaller than expected, and the soybeancurd sheets were nice and soft and full of abalone sauce flavour because it soaked the sauce.

This is the best ginger and spring onion sauce because it is not salty at all, and you can put lots of it with your rice providing they give it to you.
It was nice dining there because you can ask for a side of ginger and spring onion sauce even if you didnt order chicken.
Since the ginger and spring onion sauce is not salty, you can always adjust accordingly with the soy sauce.
But for me, the saltiness was just right.

Yesterday I went to this restaurant to eat BBQ (roasted) pork rice.
The service is good and the restaurant was full of people (it was already 2:XX pm ) Once I stepped in, the staff already welcomed me and offered seat to me.

I have ordered the BBQ pork rice. I think maybe most of the customer always go there and I looked new to the staff. Once they offered me my order, they told me there was a bottle of soya sauce on the table which I could use.

Though the BBQ pork is very lean, it is very tender and juicy. I have tried the soup, it was good, full of ingredient like carrot and meat.
However, the rice was too hard for me, actually I could taste a bit raw rice

Next time, I could try the roasted duck or take away BBQ pork as I don't like the rice.
I must praise the service is very good.
I must remind for the new-comers that this restaurant is only good for eating but not chit-chat. It is always very crowded.

Perhaps BBQ pork isn't their specialty. Perhaps roasted duck or chicken spleen is. Because I cannot see how it has earned its name. G and I came here for the BBQ pork.

Environment:
What'd you expect to see in an old cha chan teng at Wanchai. Very tight. You will most probably need to share a table with strangers.

Food:
Lean BBQ Pork with vermicelli rice noodlesFirst, the Vermicelli noodles were not the usual white opaque type. It is slightly translucent. Not sure what it's made of, what it is in fact. Not the conventional 'mi fun'. Didn't quite like it. You should order rice instead, which looks much better. Much more palatable.
The lean BBQ pork(you can make a request for that) was far too oily and fatty for me. It feels as if you're eating a lump of fat. In terms of texture, the fatty bits were of course - oily, but the rest of the meat was quite tender. In terms of flavour, the entire portion I had was bland (as if it weren't salted), the surface was far too sweet (too liberal an application of honey glaze?). About a fifth of that dish was inedible (fat).

Conclusion:
Will not be back for BBQ pork anything.

Haven't been here for awhile because of their location....not close to MTR station. But their food definitely worths the visit!

Visited on a Sat afternoon. The whole place was packed and very busy. Service was SUPER fast and the staff are friendly.

I ordered a 叉燒飯. The 叉燒 was grilled properly and marinated well. Texture is superb. Not too dry not too oily. The sauce for the rice is very good. I believe it is their home recipe instead of supermarket 李x記.

This place is always my favorite 燒味店!

Joy Hing is your typical Siu Mei, Cantonese Deli Restaurant located in Wan Chai. This is your greasy grimy hole-in-the-wall restaurant that everyone loves, but hates to admit. You sit on short round stool sharing tables with often 5 or 6 strangers, elbow to elbow. I think I’ve been to Joy Hing at least 10 times. This is one of my required visits whenever I visit Hong Kong.

Joy Hing is special place smack dab in the middle of Wan Chai, on the island of Hong Kong. You can’t miss it, with the lines of people waiting for a table or for take out. Amazingly the restaurant is full almost all the time, even between lunch and dinner on weekdays.

This is the place for Char Siu!

Mr. J and I waited patiently for our seats as our mouths were watering for our 2nd lunch of the day. Yes, I know – our 2nd lunch. Time was short for us, so we had to maximize our dining opportunities. Finally we got our seats, facing . . . the wall. But we weren’t complaining. Sometimes with these dirty little places, part of the allure is the Spartan conveniences.

The staff took our order – a plate of bbq pork on rice (Char Siu Fan) and roast pork on rice (Siu Yok Fan). After hollering our order, our plates arrived less than a minute later – perhaps 30 seconds or so. I think Joy Hing has the highest table turnover of any restaurant I’ve been to.

As we both started in our plates of meat and rice, like compulsory synchronized swimming duos, chopstick to meat, meat to mouth, repeat. . . we knew we were finally in Hong Kong. I let Mr. J have the BBQ pork, my personal favorite, while I had the roast pork. The BBQ pork, which could have been a bit more fattier, was still quite good. The meat was tender as can be and has good moistness with the sweetness and little fat. The burnt edges were a good contrast with the slight chewy hardness. The roast pork was not bad, but not that good. The skin was a little more chewy than usual and the meat was more salty that I would have liked – and I partial to saltiness than most people.

I know I would return to Joy Hing regardless of the roast pork this time. But I do plan to ask for a more fattier version of the BBQ pork, next time.

Havent been to Joy Hing for quite a while until Ma bought some takeaway of Cha Siu home for dinner. The pork had dried out after a few hours of wait, but after a pour of the signature sauce, the meat were once again moisturized and shone under the light.

The meat was not of a particular good cut but the taste of charcoal-grill retained along the edge of the meat, giving it a very raw yet aromatic taste. The relatively big plate of meat costed $30 and was a bargain given the high quality of the meat. Too bad that it was not eaten in or else it would have surely tasted a lot better!
