1. Melt butter, add onions and sugar. Cook gently for 20-30 minutes until onions turn golden.
2. Add chicken broth and seasoning, simmer for 20minutes.
3. Pour (2) in an oven proof soup bowl, put French bread on top and sprinkle with Swiss Gruyere cheese. Put in oven and bake until Swiss Gruyere cheese melts and is gratinated. Ready to serve.
1. If the onions are burnt, they will make the soup bitter.
2. The darker the onions, the darker the soup will be.
3. Slightly stale French bread can still be used.
4. Cheese on bread can be baked beforehand, and put it on the soup when the soup is done.
