Shirokiya TST:

We must have been amongst the first group of customers here. Same group as Wara Wara, Shirokiya is also an Izakaya - i.e. a Japanese casual diner mainly for drinks. Shirokiya and Wara Wara are both famous Izakaya groups from Japan.

The entrance was quite impressive. Lined with a lot of "Torii", i.e according to Shinto belief, passing through a Torii means you've entered a holy site, (I suppose entering a drinking place is similar... both are mind altering.

The whole place was extremely spacious. It had a large number of private rooms for four persons and many partitioned seats. Very good privacy. Very similar to Izakayas in Japan. Top marks for interior design.

Izakaya selections:

Shirokiya TST seems to focus on relatively healthy types of food like Tofu or Shio-Koji,

in addition to the normal Izakaya selections like yakitoris, fried stuff and a small selection of sashimi and sushi.

The menu is completely different from Wara Wara and I suspect Shirokiya at Kowloon Bay too. I find the selections here a tad more sophisticated than Wara Wara and Watami.

These were what we've ordered:

Homemade tofu ($48):

The friendly waitresses will bring a whole pot of tofu to your room and scoop it into a wooden bowl. The tofu was served with 3 types of salt : "Snow Salt" (a refined type of salt made from deep sea water near Okinawa), "Yuzu Salt" and "Green Tea" salt.

This essentially tasted like a firmer version of "tofu fa". The bean taste wasn't as pronounced as I had expected it to be but was decent. Best with green tea salt. The other two weren't particularly flavourful.

At $48, we're happy.

Tofu with shio-koji ($52):

Another tofu dish. This tofu's texture was firm. Looked remotely like a fermented tofu before frying. It had a mild saline aftertaste because of the Shio-Koji (koji - I understand this to be the raw material for fermenting soy sauce, sake and various other condiments).

Quite interesting. I strongly recommend enjoying it with the "Moromi Miso" (miso marinated with wheat, rice and soy beans) placed on the table.

Tsukune with egg and buta bara: ($58)

The shape of this tsukune was very interesting (photo above). The timing was good. There weren't any cartilage in the minced chicken meat but instead herbs were added. The taste was a bit light for me but my wife liked it a lot.

One grilled Okinawa Agu Pork Belly (buta bara) was included (not shown on photo). It was certainly up to standard as well.

Okinawa agu pork on hot plate: ($168)

Agu pork is a very famous type of pork exclusively from Okinawa. It has a more meaty flavour compare to other types of pork.

Very good taste but not for the health conscious since it was fairly oily.

"Exploding" Sushi ($128)

I usually feel a bit suspect about the quality of sashimi or sushi inside an Izakaya but we ordered this anyway.

I can't remember the Japanese name but it was similar to something I had at "Ihei". The one at Ihei was very good but not those here. The maguro in particular had a greyish colour so we didn't touch it. The rest were OK though.

This "explosion" blew a small hole in the food rating.

Tomato with Shio-koji and collagen ($52)

The tomato slices were normal - nothing spectacular. The Shio-oji wasn't that pronounced. Maybe it's my imagination but it seemed to have enhanced the tomato flavour. My wife thought this was just average.

These were good. Crunchy outside and soft inside. Decent fresh potato taste. Very good.

Service:

Service here is worth a special mention. All members of staff were extremely polite and professional. Very attentive.

Conclusion:

Decent casual dining with very comfortable private rooms for small groups.
Extremely attentive service.
Decent food at a fairly reasonable price.
Recommended.

Other Info. : * They have a rather extensive drinks list with all sorts of Japanese alcohol and cocktails. But their drinks licence will only be available later next month.
