While Hong Kong is becoming more and more health conscious, it doesn’t stop us from any type of dessert cravings. Luckily, we have The Cakery, which is a local bakery doing wholesome sweet treats and desserts, gluten-free, paleo, low in refined sugar, made with wholewheat flour and other natural ingredients. The Cakery have launched it’s second pop-up store at Pacific Place, taking up the former eclair’s stall on level two. There are a wide range of guilt-free cupcakes, such as gojiberry, chia seeds, dates, and organic chocolate, as well as healthy oatmeal and chocolate cookies and cake pops. The today’s special Sunflower cupcake is a pumpkin base with fresh pumpkin puree frosting, has an intense cinnamon flavor, whereas the gluten-free chocolate is surprisingly moist and dense, with a scrumptious chocolate frosting decorated with gojiberry. Both cupcakes are offered with a tea pairing option. Crimson Blend – caffeine free, a bold balance of ginger, lemongrass, rosebuds & hibiscus, stimulates blood circulation, helps digestion, rich in antioxidants & vitamin C; Genmaicha – offers array of antioxidants, helps lower blood pressure, lower risk of developing heart disease, abundant in flavonoids with antioxidant effects. After work, I headed to Pacific Place for their Nutella pop up but when I arrived, all the jars of Nutella were sold! OH NO! WHY OH WHY!Saddened but this, I headed towards L'Eclair de Genie to gorge myself with a delicious sweet treat. When I arrived, I saw it was gone! That, too! (Later, I found out they had only moved locations!) In it's place was a new shop, called The Cakery. There I saw a delicious display of cupcakes. Cupcakes with frosting type of cupcakes! My eyes glowed! My stop for a post work dessert treat was here.I found that the cupcakes were all healthy. They were organic, low sugar, low fat, gluten free! WHAT IS THIS FANTASY? How can a cupcake be good for you? Cupcakes are neatly labeled in English with a description telling you all the goodness in that little sweet. They also serve tea to go with your cupcakes. Though strictly for take away, they also have a few tables for seating. There is no 10% service charge. As the staff told me they were good for me, I had not one but two cupcakes. I mean ... no point counting calories when it's good for you, right?Double Date ($36). This was highly recommended by the staff and she claimed this to be their best seller. It's a red date cupcake with a red date buttercream. It was labeled as a low fat, low sugar cupcake. All the sweetness relied on the natural sweetness of the red dates. My thoughts? Hmm...it tasted more like a breakfast muffin than a cupcake. It had that nutty grainy texture found in muffins. It was moist and you can really taste the dates, but this was odd for me. I wasn't a big fan. It was good but not for a cupcake break. I think I could probably see me eating this for breakfast. Lemon Drop ($36). My second cupcake was my favorite cupcake flavor of all time. Lemon. This was a lemon cupcake with chia seeds and topped with a lemon buttercream frosting that was topped with more chia seeds. Another low sugar, low fat cupcake but the addition of chia seeds to give you omega 3. The cupcake was moist with that sharp freshness that comes from lemon. The cream was fluffy and not too sweet.Healthy cupcakes that taste good and look pretty, too. I'll definitely be back to try more. And more. And more. Because hey ... healthy right?
