It was the first year that I participated in the Hong Kong Restaurant Week.  Having tried two participanting restuarants during the Restaurant Week, I decided to try this one as part of the Extended Restaurant Week (as it was voted as the Most Popular).   I chose this place partly because of the name - Sal Curioso (spanish for curious?) and partly becuase of the cuisines it serves  - South American + Spanish (was curious what food they would serve).The interesting entrance led to an open kitchen

We chose various Tapas to share.  The Squid Pop and Black (Mexico) came with squid, mussels and popcorn.  The seafood was fresh and the popcorn was lightly spiced to bring in an interesting addition to the dish.  Another dish served in a hotpan was the Albondigas (Spain) - lamb meatballs on chickpeas.  The meatball was tender and tasty, and balanced well with the chickpeas and the sauce.  The Sherry Marinated Tomatoes (Sal's Mum) was a simple tomato salad dish with refreshing flavour (served with mozarella cheese and herbs).

The Clam La Olla (Venezuela) was a supposed to be a hot pot of clams, chorizo sausage and white beans.  But it was served in a small plate and while the clams were fresh and juicy I found the white beans too bland and overwheming.  And I don't remember tasting any sausage.

The Nacho's Sal Style (Mexico) stood out when I read the menu, but it turned out to be a disappointment.  The corn crackers were not crunchy at all.  The avocado mousse and cheese sauce and the salsa sacuse all tatsted possessed rather than freshly made.

The Brandara Croquettes (Spain) was a ordinary and not particularly memorbable dish.  The presentation was good though.

The Braised Duck (Peru) was interestly served in a jar with a pieace of potato bread on top. It came with a small spoon for you to scoop out the duck leg, which was perfectly cooked with a citrus based sauce.  Another creative and yummy dish!

For dessert I picked the My Mexcian Cheesecake (Mexico) and was very happy with my choice.  It ws a white chococlate chesecake with guava parfait, oragne and lime meringue.  It looked and tasted great!

題外話/補充資料: Was surprised and disappointed to find out that the restaurant is now closed. Hope they can reopen some time as Hong Kong lacks interesting places like this where you can taste a variety of food from different South American countries served in creative ways.

Sal's Mum - Sherry Marinated Tomatoes; Torta del casa cheese whip, herbs and salsa
全Tapas餐牌也不乏清新的色拉,清甜多汁的番茄配上好似朵朵白雲一般的cream,簡單又好味。淡忌廉入口輕盈,口感有那麼些絲滑,配上微涼酸甜的番茄,一個“酷”一個“柔”,作為開胃小菜再適合不過。

Mexico - Squid Pop And Black (Seared squid, mussels, potatoes, mussel, aioli and spiced popcorn)
漆黑如墨,一看便知與墨魚汁有關,新鮮青口和軟熟的焗豆均被染成墨色,吃口並不以香口為主,反倒是突出一股淡淡的原味,豆香泗益,軟熟亦有些粉粉的,青口也保持清甜的特性,可能是影像的時間長了,頂上的爆米花待吃的時候已經軟趴趴了,脆口不在。

Spain - Brandana Croquettes (tomato and caper sofrito)
炸的香脆的丸子配上特質的番茄沙沙,用上鮮番茄,洋蔥,好似也有些檸檬汁之類作為融合劑,整體口感較潤,清新非常;如此配上炸的脆脆的丸子是恰好!

Dominican Republic - Chicharron De Pollo (Deep fry chicken marinated in bitter orange, lime, garlic and cumin floured with paprika)
這一道很有秋季的感覺,焦糖色的雞翼配上紫紅色的葉片。添以青檸和橙的酸味,恰恰中和了炸雞翼的油膩感,同時也加入多種香料,光是聞著就已經讓人流口水。雞肉嫩滑,雞皮幾乎不帶脂肪,炸的通脆之後變成一片幾乎透明色的膠質覆在裏面白嫩嫩的雞肉上,多種香料的使得雞翼變得異常惹味,似乎刷過一層楓糖漿或是燒烤醬之類的,吃起來不但帶著清新的酸味,也有一份蜜糖似的甜味。

Venezuela - Clam La Olla (Hot pot of clams, chorizo sausage, white beans and salsa of roast chili and oregano)
一小鍋冒著熱氣騰騰的蛤蜊放在眼前增能讓人不食指大動,蛤蜊肉鮮甜軟嫩,食材是吃的出的新鮮,肉質相當鮮活有生氣。這一鍋別看是白花花的淡雅顏色,實則相當惹味,我像是因為配著香腸一起燜煮的關係,切成小段的香腸咸香非常,帶些肥膘吃在嘴裡的多汁又油潤的。鍋中的豆類也是出色一員,充分燜煮之後口感變得酥酥爛爛,外加吸飽了各種調料與湯汁的精華,嘴裡的味道相當豐富立體。

Spain - Albondigas (Saltbush lamb meatballs on walnut braised chickpeas)
又是重口味,鷹嘴豆裹滿油潤潤的湯汁,吃起來脆口的同時又是多汁的;最最罪惡的是那塊入口瞬間崩裂成無數液體小分子的鵝肝,無需過多調味,本身的鮮甜與油潤就足以撐起場面。三粒巨大羊肉球,外層煎的干身,裏面則是鬆緊恰好的羊肉肉碎,多汁已不必多提,最重要是那股羊騷味來得不緊不慢,羊味足又點到為止。

Chile - Lomito (Small sandwich of roast pork belly, avocado and cabbage)
相較之稍有遜色的迷你漢堡,略微“原生態”的麵包口感是乾燥有足而韌勁稍欠,厚切的五花腩肉用上類似韓式燒烤的手法,瘦肉緊實有“韌”有餘相當有嚼勁,白色的肥膏部份一點不油膩口感略帶凝膠質感帶有些粘度,也是不錯;精華之處是調製的青芥末醬,小小的辛辣配上適當的酸甜,中和油膩也帶出肉質的鮮甜。

Spain - Patatas Bravas (Potatoes with cilantro salad)
富有異國風情的一道純澱粉質,迷你土豆連著土豆皮來烘烤,出來的效果很wild,用上印度香料來調味,放在面前是止不住的陣陣香味,香的尤其獨特,這股味道是我第一次品嘗到印度拉茶之時便深深記住的,這個味道絕對不是人人能接受的,但要承認的一點是:至少聞起來相當誘人!

Spain - Sal's fruit polvoron (mangoes, melon and pinapple, creamed, foamed and pressed with Spanish shortbread)
相當相當推薦的一款夏日甜品,全鮮果宴,加之或雪皅或cream或泡沫的多樣手法,整道甜品無論是呈現還是品味,都十分有講究。鮮甜多汁的菠蘿、提子,清潤的牛油果醬配上略帶牛油香氣的麵包碎碎,酸甜沁人又輕盈的泡沫狀雪皅,三者平衡。

Portual - The Illegal donut (Spiced churros and chocolate espuma)
這道可算是signatured西班牙甜品,近似donut但卻有更多變的形態(通常是長條形的),周身滾著一層晶瑩的大顆粒的糖霜,吃的時候配上調和成稠稠的朱古力(榛子)醬。油炸的churros其實一點不油膩,外圍的糖霜大大粒的吃起來好有存在感,而donut內部則是略帶彈性的軟綿,意外的是整體甜度並不算大,貪心的在朱古力醬里滾上幾回塞入口中,幼滑甜蜜的朱古力夾著榛子濃郁的香味,好肥但好好味!似乎,店家知道大家吃了甜的必定擔心會過滯,所以這一道甜品也配上一味勁酸的冰涼甜品,野莓雪皅!相當原汁原味的雪皅,將野莓的精華都鎖住了,吃一口是讓人會縮著腮幫子的酸意,幸好底下墊著一堆可可粉,乾粉似的加上略微的苦味讓酸味降低不少。

Mexico - My Mexico Cheesecake (white chocolate cheesecake, guava parfait, orange and lime meringue)
白雪皚皚的芝士蛋糕,擺盤一樣盡納夏日的清新,用上鮮橙的亮色來做點綴。芝士蛋糕上層撒這些白朱古力霜,蛋糕也做的較為緊實一點,吃起來白朱古力的甜與芝士的酸甜搭配的不錯,幼滑而濃郁,口感厚厚的讓人滿足。

Sal Curioso was selected again because it was the ‘most popular restaurant’ amount others on the list through out restaurant week at 5-11/8. Sal Curioso is actually under the same company (Woolly Pig Concept) with Madam Sixty Ate, which Chris Woodyard & Bronwyn Cheung (husband & wife) are the co-founders & directors.

The restaurant is located on 2/F, 32 Wyndam Street, Central. The main entrance is on the Glenealy Street around Lan Kwai Fong.

Once we arrived 2/F, there is a lounge area on the left side with all the colorful cushions & decorations on wall. Left side is the bar area, best for happy hour!

Further down on the left side of the restaurant is their open kitchen. Smelled so good when we arrived. Really interesting to have a look at what they are cooking at the moment.

The menu is more of a tapas style, which mean every person have an option to choose 4 dishes on the menu among the savories & desserts. Me & my friend chose 7 savories tapas & 1 dessert to share, which took us to 6 countries!!!

LOVE this table-filled-with-lots-of-dishes scene! That’s the amazing part of a tapas menu, which everyone can share & taste everything.

On the far right side is the Sal’s mum – Sherry Marinated Tomatos (Torta del casa cheese whip, herbs & salsa). Fresh tomato salad served on a rectangle white plate. Simple plating with micro-herbs.

The 2nd right dish is the Chile – Lomito (Small sandwich of roast pork belly, avocado & cabbage).
Actually I chose this dish just because of it has avocado in it. hehehe… But I believe the roast pork belly was supposed to be the main attention here. The bun was crunchy on outside, soft on the inside. Big slide of roast pork belly was sandwiched in between. Avocado & the cabbage were added to balance out the fattiness of the roast pork belly. But I think it’s still on the too fatty side for my taste. So, this dish was just alright to me.

This was one of my favor dish, ’cause obviously there was avocado in there!! However, the name wasn’t accurately describe the dish. Apparently it’s not Nachos, but since it’s corn crackers with the sauce & relish serving alongside. I believe the name was just a metaphor.
This dish was really like the real nachos & I kept eating it even my friend noticed that. I was imagining that eating a big plate of this when watching TV!!!

The top right-hand side of the table is the Mexico – Squid pop & black (Seared squid, mussels, potatos, mussel aioli & spiced popcorn). Cute dish name: pop & black, which completely describe the whole dish.

Never imagine popcorn can be added into a dish. Interesting & innovative! Seared squid & mussels were perfect without over-cooking, which would like eating plastic. Potato was in cylinder shape, which coated completely with squid ink sauce. It’s a bit funny to find a black potato. hahaha…The spiced popcorn added another layer of flavor & a bit of crunchy texture to the whole dish.

Who doesn’t like fried chicken?!!! The marinate coated on top was tangy, sour, spicy, crunchy. So many textures & flavors all in one. This dish would possibly be the 2nd best dishes out of all that we ordered.

The dish on the very left side of the table is Venezuelo – Clam la olla (Clams, white beans & chorizo in spicy tomato sauce). The clams was alright, not particularly fresh. Spicy tomato sauce was really match with the chorizo. But may be the white beans was a bit undercooked, so it tasted a bit chalky.

This was the last savories dish we ordered. A big chuck of sweet potato bread with charred mark was placed on the glass container, which the citrus braised duck leg was served.
Citrus was turned out to be quite match with duck. Never thought of that combination.
Another proof to make Sal Curioso is the experimental innovator!


Here comes the sweet ending of our meal.
 
Portugal – The Illegal Donut

As the name tells it all! It’s totally “illegal”, ’cause it’s just too good!!

The spiced churros reminded me of the churro truck at Melbourne Victoria Market & those from Chocolateria san Curro. It’s just that the cinnamon sugar was a bit overloaded. The chocolate mousse was light & airy. But need to be eaten ASAP when served up, since it became a bit watery over a while. The raspberry sorbet was refreshing & fruity. The chocolate biscuit crumbs added some more crunchy texture.

The meal was very nice, the waiter/waitress were very attendive.

Unfortunately, bad news came!
題外話/補充資料: I received an e-mail from Sal Curioso just a few days after my visit that they will serve their last dishes on 30/8, then they’ll be closing down. I was shocked when I received this e-mail, since the experience there was great! The staff at the restaurant explained that the restaurant was actually struggling. So in the end they have to close it down. I blamed for the sky-high rent in Hong Kong! But good news was also delivered in the e-mail that they will open a new restaurant called Madam S’ate at Civic Square, Element near to ICC. Hope this one can last long & as successful as Madam Sixty Ate.

Had dinner at this restaurant for the 1st time as part of the extended restaurant week promotion. I guess there is no way to put this delicately, but I am really surprised that this restaurant was voted as most popular restaurant for the restaurant week awards!

My first impression of the restaurant was not bad in terms of ambience -- lively music, nice decor and layout. The restaurant staff were nice and attentive, and explained the menu as soon as we were seated (basically, there was a list of tapas to be shared, and you could opt for add-ons). 

The first round of tapas came: Nachos Sal style, Clam la olla, and Jambalaya. All three dishes looked appetizing and made for a nice picture. Sadly, the taste of the food was a huge letdown. The nachos were actually more like "keropok" (a variety of prawn crackers commonly found in southeast asia), hence calling them nachos seemed kind of misleading. The taste was ok. At least one of the clams in the Clam la olla dish was not cooked, and the white beans were a little hard but burnt, indicating that they had not been cooked long enough and the fire used to cook the beans were too strong. The sauce for this dish also seemed to be pre-made (bought in a can rather than made from scratch?). And the Jamabalaya, I took it that it was supposed to bear some resemblance to the spanish paella. It was bland and tasteless, not anything like the flavorful paella you get to taste in Spain where the rice is full of flavor (despite the presence of saffron used in this dish).

The restaurant staff was prompt to notice we had finished the first round of tapas and cleared the plates for us. Then came the next round of tapas: wagyu beef cheeks, pork ribs, broccoli, pork rind and cumin, and heirloom tomatoes. Unfortunately, the taste was just not there for any of these dishes -- they were all rather bland with the exception of the pork ribs which had been marinated such that there was a strong taste from the sauce to mask any original taste of the meat. It was difficult to understand how even the tomatoes were bland tasting, considering that it would be quite a simple and tasty dish (fresh tomatoes with olive oil normally tastes quite good?). 

By this time, i had completely written off the restaurant. But then came the surprise. The desserts were not bad at all! The Magdelena and the illegal donut were served, and for some reason, these desserts were fine and we enjoyed everything down to the last mouthful. I'd say if you decide to come to this restaurant, it's safe to stick to drinks and dessert, but don't come for the tapas!

Boyfriend and I have been to Sal Curioso for cocktails but this is the first time we had dinner there. We booked a table through Restaurant Week and it was on set menu and presumably it was cheaper than a la carte (?).The food was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.! The set menu consists 4 tapas dishes and one main course. The hot pot of clams with sausage was full of flavors. The seafood with suckling pork cooked in rice was quite like paella. The prawn and squid were tender, and it was easy to tell that the rice

Boyfriend and I have been to Sal Curioso for cocktails but this is the first time we had dinner there. We booked a table through Restaurant Week and it was on set menu and presumably it was cheaper than a la carte (?).The food was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.! The set menu consists 4 tapas dishes and one main course. The hot pot of clams with sausage was full of flavors. The seafood with suckling pork cooked in rice was quite like paella. The prawn and squid were tender, and it was easy to tell that the rice was cooked with the seafood and the pork all the way through, instead of being put together before serving. The slow braised lamb in red wine sauce was worth dying for!
The pork loin was quite tender and juicy, cooked to perfection. By the time dessert was served, I didn’t think I'd have room for it. But they looked so inviting and we had to try. Fortunately, the desserts were relatively light and fruity, and they went down smoothly.We were served by two waiters and they were very polite, friendly and attentive. 5 out of 5.Btw, other than cocktails, they also serve delicious malbec
We are planning our next visit to Sal Curioso after the holiday.

The service was decent and presentation for the most part was nice, the only saving graces for this disappointing establishment. Nothing stood out as particularly good. The sea bass was the only dish that even got remotely close to "good". The ribs were not very tender, and portion size was tiny for what they call "social" platter, which implies sharing. The same goes for the buttermilk chicken, which came recommended. There were 3 pieces. $250 for 3 pieces of overcooked, dry (and by dry I mean as dry as the bloody Atacama desert), flavourless cardboard. When they say the chicken is rubbed with spices, what they really mean is this: there is a 1cm thick coating of spices around the chicken, which will not have given any flavour whatsoever to the meat itself.

The other dishes we had were so unremarkable in taste and texture that I cannot write anything meaningful about them other than they were not horrid.

I was also looking forward to the cheesecake (I love cheesecake, in all shapes and forms, I have a separate cheesecake stomach just for it.) But after the main courses, although I was still hungry (did I mention the tiny portions?), I could not bring myself to order another disappointment which I'm sure it would have been.

One more thing to note: we were told that we couldn't order a few "deals" to share between the 6 of us if we intended to order some other bits and pieces to go along with them, it was either only "deals" or no "deal" at all.

Finally, to the prices. They are outrageous. Period. The food here is absolutely not worth the prices they ask. Even half would be asking a lot. Again the chicken as an example: $250 gets you something approximately the same size as a KFC set menu, but much worse in both taste and texture (yes, worse than KFC). And you are supposed to believe that this is for sharing. Between more than 2 people (2 people does not a "social" event make, therefore calling your platters "social" implies sharing between more than 2 people.)

Come on. Get real.

Spanish cuisine is suddenly blooming in town in the past year. This Sal Curioso sets herself in a very good location, with a large floor area, a balcony and chic interior, it easily reminds me of the hip design in Spain. Read from Open Rice that having dinner in Sal Curioso could be expensive, having lunch here would be a thrifty option. They offer a choice of 3 tapas or sweets for $150 or unlimited serves for $250 (at weekends, $220 on weekdays). The serving size is slightly smaller than standard tapas, but if you plan to have repeated visit, the $150 (with no service charge unless in a table of 7 or more) set is already a good deal to share plates with friends.

Better to avoid non-peak hours for food (such as our visiting hour) as many of the dishes were not cook-to-order, likely due to the petit serving size and it’s understandable. Some of the tapas we ordered were either warm or a bit dried due to being kept warm for a long time.

As recommended by the waiter, chicken breast fillet was first deep fried before placing in the oven to keep the tenderness, however, the texture was much tougher than expected. Lack of seasoning too.

This was the hottest (or in the temperature that it should be) dish among all. Portion of a duck leg was deboned and shredded. The coriander and orange slices gave a good blend of flavours to the dish.

Opened in November 2012, Sal Curioso is the second venture by husband-and-wife Chris Woodyard and Bronwyn Cheung of Woolly Pig Concepts, the owners of the quirky restaurant in Wanchai, Madam Sixty Ate. Presenting re-invented dishes from Spain, Italy and South America, Sal Curioso is a funky and upbeat outlet that embraces the culture of food sharing.

The restaurant is a big and charming space with an outdoor terrace, and the menu features an enticing selection of inventive dishes, brought to us by the "food creator/scientist" Sal Curioso. The restaurant doesn't impose a service charge (except for a party of 7 or above where a 5% charge is added), and the staff, even if not the most efficient, were amiable and helpful.

Conveniently located on Wyndham Street, I went to the restaurant for lunch and was very happy to find out that the Restaurant Week Menu had been extended, and we could order 4 items on the menu for $158 (normally it is $150 for 3 tapas for lunch), which was a great opportunity for us to try out more of the restaurant's experimental dishes.

(1) We started off with the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Bites. The crispy-skinned chicken, corn ragout and some pop corn created a fiery combination of flavours.

(2) Next was the Battered Fish. Tender, flaky fish was encased in a layer of light-as-air batter, and a sweet green pea pipperade completed it.

(9) The restaurant boasts a selection of house-made and house-infused drinks at the bar, but we didn't try any of them when we came here for a weekday lunch. We did, however, order the Sal's Detox (additional $35), a drink of apple and passion fruit juice infused with a kick of ginger & chilli. It was a refreshing drink, but the taste of ginger could have been stronger for a more dramatic effect.

The portions at this restaurant were rather small, but the majority of their bold, creative dishes tasted fantastic. If you are up for some curious, innovative dishes, Sal Curioso is the place for a fun and exciting night out.

First mistake of the night - they served my cider in a glass full of ice and it totally diluted the cider. Only saving grace was the piece of lime that really lifted the whole drink. No ice unless the ice's made of cider too!

Food - Don't quite remember the names but will try to explain in detail.
Corn crackers were good, tasty overall.
Bread with 3 dips - Bread (okay), eggplant (ok but leaves an aftertaste), tomatoes (nasty because a liquorice-flavoured spice was used), avocado (very creamy but not much flavour)
Fish ceviche - It wasn't a ceviche!! It was seared cubes of fish with condiments. The complete dissociation of the dish with its name wasn't nice because I was expecting ceviche, that is fish with tonnes of acid and herbs
Buttermilk fried chicken - Moist but greasy and outer coating fell apart on my plate
(Side dish) Roasted potatoes - Nice but the cumin used was overpowering, especially when paired with a main that is deep-fried.

Wait staff - Friendly overall, hostess was a tad overbearing as she tried to explain the whole menu to me even though everything was in English. To top the night off, I was called "baby" by a staff when I asked for directions to the loo. I thought I was in a restaurant, not a bar? There's a fine line between being friendly and just downright inappropriate.

Suffice it to say, I will never ever go back to this restaurant, nor will I recommend it to anyone as the mistakes were quite unforgivable for the price they are charging.

Scallops & Jerk Chicken Wings (Green pea piperade and feve emulsion)
I always like scallops, this is my first time to have scallops with chicken wings in 1 dish. I like the presentation. The scallops were fresh & nice and the chicken wings (no bones) are yummy too. But they seem don’t match together.

Wagyu Beef Ceviche
I like the presentation. The taste was great especially the beef and crispy battered onions. But the mushrooms were a bit too big to eat.

Sardine Salad
This salad was a surprise. It was delicious.
The sardine fillet, the red peppers, the smoked bacon and the shaved potato – they were very match all together. We finished the dish very quick.

The Mains

Blazed Wagyu Cheeks & Sweetbreads
The wagyu cheeks were mostly very nice and tender. I like the cous cous too. But I don’t like the chestnut, the taste was weird.

Suckling Pig 100g
The pig was a surprise, very crispy skin and tender meat. The presentation was very nice like an artwork.


The Dessert

Peanut Butter
This was really nice.
Full of peanut butter, tasted very yummy and gave me a happy ending of the dinner. But it would be great if the ice-cream was vanilla instead of peanut butter since the taste was light not as rich peanut butter as the cake. Besides, the rum bananas onside were yummy too.

第一次點菜選了餐牌上的頭四款,酸忌廉肉餡角(Sour cream empanada)新鮮弄好,咬開時內裡冒出微煙,肉粒充份調味,沒有難吃的道理。羊肉球的肉味不算突出,而且肉質偏實,幸好墊底的雞心豆(Chickpeas)是等食物的最佳良伴,不偏愛羊者可以不試。蕃茄凍湯的蕃茄酸味十分濃烈,加上份量不多,喝畢一小杯要是沒有看餐牌也分不清楚這杯凍湯的真正味道。Brandada加入salsa後,味道沒有想像中的油膩,不過兩者的配搭倒是不太對口味。

小蕃茄爽甜多汁,但放在旁邊的芝士給人一種可有可無的感覺,擺放的方法令人尷尬。以薯入饌的Tapas有兩款,加入香草後直接把薯仔炸起,連皮的部份特別香脆,內裡的部份亦有香草點綴,後者加入帶微酸的乳酪後再炸,吃起來質感軟綿綿的。

來到肉類和海鮮的環節,當中海鮮的部份原材料水準不好,但處理的方法馬虎,兩款以海鮮的Tapas同樣令人失望,味道上只能嚐到海鮮本身的味道,而且青口每次的數量也不同,店員的回覆是數量其實是依據廚師的喜好,質素管理倒是需要再加強。豬腩肉的肥肉層不多,燒過後肉質變得更韌,炸雞的調味接近零,而且炸得過火,大家怎麼也不能把雞件咬開。肋骨可以說是多款肉類中最好,肉質軟腍入味,是少數能夠給人較深刻印象的。

最後我們把所有甜品都點了一客來吃,從朋友的圖片中看到 "Marsh 'o' mallow"的可愛澆水盆,想不到短時間內到訪擺盆已經沒有再提供。幸好香蕉雪糕的味道濃,和旁邊的棉花糖挺配的,味道上總算沒有令人失望。朱古力雪糕中加入微微的辣味,一口雪糕既有甜味又有辣的刺激,味道上多了不少層次。不過石板街的質感十分硬實,檸檬「批」送上時已變成一層層的液體,味道上亦沒有給人驚喜。

Tapas裡大部份的選擇都沒有給人很深刻的印象,而且服務上令人有點費解,最令人滿意的倒是餐廳的佈局,悠閒寫意,而且用餐環境寧靜,是和朋友聊天的好地方。

I don't enjoy mutton as much as V does but hey, no harm trying. As with the other valiant attempts I have made in the past 2 months to try things I would never have eaten before - like crab fat. I just don't see the appeal. I had a bite of the meatballs and decided that they weren't for me. Don't like the gaminess. But it has received V's stamp of approval. I appreciated the bed of chickpeas though and helped myself greedily to them. Well seasoned, well cooked and quite moreish.

Not my thing either. The black potatoes were just...normal starchy cylinders with a slightly rubbery texture. Nothing special in terms of taste. Nor did the popcorns blow my mind - in fact they felt slightly stale, slightly soggy, no lightness. Don't know why. I suppose they did not keep them overnight?! The 'spice' on the popcorn was simply a sprinkling of spiced powder.

Cute name, but come to think of it - it's a very literal description, Battered fish is precisely what it was - sadly, the batter was too thick and again, slightly soggy. It didn't crisp up like a good ol' fish and chips. The fish was also quite bland.
Probably cod or another fish that requires careful seasoning before it can be tasty. The quality was not bad though - quite smooth and fresh. I must also say that the bed of peas was lovely. Not your usual *slightly mashed* peas. There was a binding ingredient which made the mash particularly....moreish. My vocab is limited, sorry.

Not bad. The BBQ sauce was tasty and thinly coated the ribs - which was good - really don't like it when they smother the ribs in sauce. The meat was tender but did not 'melt in the mouth'. I suppose a bit of gnawing on the bone is what eating ribs is about, especially when there isn't a lot of meat in the first place. However, this dish wasn't outstanding - could easily get it elsewhere. Would've looked for a bit of spin on this classic meat dish - high expectations!

The flavour was nice but the meat was quite dry. If you don't eat all the layers at once - including the crisp skin and the fat and the leaner meat at the bottom - the lean meat standing alone wasn't moist/tender.

This chicken was a bit tough and dry, actually. But it was well seasoned and the batter was lovely. It was crisp and not too salty. I liked it more than KFC fried chicken (although KFC is pretty yummy hehee). But you would only have it in small pieces because the crisp exterior is necessary to keep your senses interested in the food. I loved the corn ragout though. It was so buttery, and the corn was super sweet and juicy! Wonder if they came from japan, or whether they cooked it in milk...

Dessert was a bitter disappointment for us. This deconstructed key lime pie was..a mystery. Neither of us understood what was going on. Let me explain. There was a gooey lemony custard, strands of candied lime zest, a small dollop of coconut cream/ice cream, some granules of digestives/graham crackers mixed with coconut and butter....all heaped onto one small plate. It was unimpressive, confusing and a complete fail. We didn't know where to start. And when eaten separately the dessert just made little sense.

But trust me when I say it was served in a large glass filled with, one ball of banana ice cream, and two small blocks of cylindrical, lightly browned-on-top marshmallows. The banana ice cream was very banana-ry but I was wondering whether I'd enjoy a simple mashed up and chilled banana, without having to fuss over adding cream and making it into an ice cream...the marshmallows were simple, lightly toasted ones. I would liken the texture to the individually packaged mini marshmallows you get from Okashi land with chocolate/strawberry filling? @@ Rubbery, and sweet. That is all. Not impressive at all.

It was drizzling intermittently that day. The sky was a dull laundry water grey so I got this scarf to drive away the drabness. Good times - enjoying a breather when times are supposed to be stressful...is a discipline one's got to maintain.
However, this discipline will not bring me back to this curious, budding restaurant within half a year. Feels like it still isn't quite ready. Still got lots of loose ends to tie up. While we were lunching a few workers came up to put up some art on the walls. So there was construction going on while we were having lunch. Curious.
題外話/補充資料: The portions are [u]TINY[/u]. I could've finished the bed of chickpeas, peas and corn in TWO spoonfuls but given the apparent scarcity I pained myself to exercise some self-control...ate 3-4 morsels at a time...not entirely satisfying I should say!

吃不到的葡萄是酸的,就選在與露台一玻璃之隔的桌子,眼晴看到也覺心甜。

Sal Curioso 的餐牌是三張摺疊的紙張,最初有點混亂,後來經細研後,原來分別在前面的圖案與長度。最長的是 Wine List,面上印有開瓶器、 Food List 及 Drink List 是同一長度,分別印有一尾魚及漏斗。

Cocktail 給人耳目一新的感覺,成份結構新穎,對我來說大部份都很吸引。最後我選了 Curious Paloma,有我喜愛的 Tequila, Grapefruit, Lime, Basil。味道很清新可口,除以前的 JJ's 外,此次算是那麼多年後最滿意的一杯 Cocktail, Cinnemon 的鹽邊很香亦不會過鹹,與 Curious Paloma 的味道相輔相成!

老公一看 Beer 系列,便斬釘截鐵地拒絕其他酒精飲品。我一看後也對老公的肯定予以認同,因為連啤酒品種也是特別得很,充滿新意。老公要了 Rouge American Amber Draft Beer,入口順滑、帶有咖啡香氣與輕柔的烘焗小麥氣味,確是值得嘗試。

跟著是兩個頭盆。

先來的是 Albondigas。兩個羊肉球香氣濃烈,叫人食指大動。一試後,我想如要用羊羶味來形容,我會評它為濃級,但是那份羊羶跟平日的有所不同,不會令人有膩意之餘,同時又會令人喜歡上它,因為我本身也是不太喜歡羊羶味的,但Albondigas 卻是例外。

羊肉的肉質非常的鬆軟潤澤,舌尖感認到羊肉保留了口感豐厚的粗粒狀,香度、質量與口感交錯出令人雀躍的羊肉球,此刻份量顯得份外的渺小,試問這般優質的美食又誰會嫌多。除外,墊底的雞心豆混合了溶化的鵝肝與合桃,口感與香味也是一流,千萬不要錯過。

原來 Albondigas 選用了不施抗生素及激素的 Saltbush Lamb,更任由羊群自由穿梭灌木,可說是由羊隻管理草原。亦不會對植物施予化學農藥,所以羊肉含有特別豐富的蛋白質與獨特的味道,反樸歸真的飼養方法對食用者、禽畜、環境就是互相尊重的關係。

另一頭盆是 Scallops & Jerk Chicken Wings,名字不叫人好奇,直接是帶子與雞翼。此頭盆最令人驚喜反而是雞皮與及墊底的青豆,帶子同雞肉只是一般一般。

近乎溶化狀態的雞翼皮上附有一層酸、香、鹹的醬汁,效果獨特,更可沾上碟上青綠的醬汁進食,又會產生另一種味道。而新鮮、清甜的青豆伴上甜香奶味的醬汁,絕不感膩意,反而令到味覺有新的刺激!

主菜我們選了Buttermilk Fried Chicken,是 Sal Curioso 的 Signature Dish 之一。

用上了 Range Chicken,隨意奔走的快樂雞隻,雞肉果然結實彈牙,肉感亦細嫩,可惜醃味不足,一點兒也沒有牛油及奶香,與其名字有所差距,只能嚐到雞肉的原有鮮味。另附有兩小塊炸粟米粒,漿粉藏著粟米粒,口感帶點煙韌。

底部是軟穀麥與粟米的 Ragout,反而小甜、溫純的味道倒令人難忘!

Sal Curioso 具有幾款配菜可自由配撘,我們要了菇類及櫻桃蕃茄,與肉類來個平衡。

櫻桃蕃茄被不規則地放上像小雪球的西班牙羊奶 Cheese Whip,插上香草及小炸圈,漂亮又精緻的賣相當的吸引。櫻桃蕃茄新鮮,可是名為 Sherry Marinated Tomatoes 並沒有絲毫 Sherry 的酒味或 Sherry 的醋味,而且還帶有小小凍氣,不清楚是否 Sal Curioso 的獨有烹調風格。

而 Parillas Mushrooms and Smoked Paprika Peas 的烤菇肉厚爽滑,帶點彈牙、口感強烈,調味以純鮮味作主導。而 Smoked Paprika Peas 用上了青豆與雞心豆,但 Paprika 的香料組合是偏向溫和,可能是歐洲的配方,與印度的濃烈明顯不同。雖然如此,食味仍是非常的討好。

再來的主菜是厨房烤爐上的乳豬,或許色彩繽紛的 Compote 色調很難識別出已斬件的乳豬。經過與厨師的溝通,我們指定要了一隻被譽為最佳部位的乳豬腿,超過 300 克的重量,每 100克 為 $130元正。

我們對此味主菜抱有萬分的期待。乳豬腿肉質同是彈性豐富與幼滑,質量不用懷疑。可是焦香與醃味沒有預期的深刻,只屬於輕描淡寫之作,食味也是偏向肉質的自然原味。反之,使用了啤梨、橙肉、蘋果、蜜糖與芥末烹煮出來的醬汁,予人一種清新清純之感,印象更深。

及後侍應如常向我們徵詢對食物的意見,我們也如實報告,相信日後會有相應改善。

Sal Curioso 剛開業1個月,有待改善的地方當然存在,不過飲品的質素、採用優質健康食材的路線、出色的伴菜與及令人好奇的烹調方法,非要保留不可。

結緍那麼多年,還是第一趟沒有跟老公於正日過生日,慶幸身邊的另一半對我選擇的路一直緊緊的支持,還要反過來多謝是晚我的安排,最後搶著要付錢,不想我多花費,生日的不是我,卻令我感動萬分!

我承諾願意為老公不辭勞苦找尋有新意的餐廳,更樂意一世享用 "霸王餐" 。

店名是 Sal Curioso,其中的 「Cusioso」 讓我聯想起 「Curiosity」一字,看來主廚希望將創意盡情發揮,好讓食客能滿足對美食的好奇心。餐廳設於二樓,拾級而上,近樓梯口有個小小的酒吧區,走進一點就見到由主廚及其團隊打理的 open kitchen 及用餐區,地方不大,但就五臟俱全。

這晚的菜式全由主廚發板,開始時先來一些 tapas,Corn Crackers ($50) 粟米片入口很香脆,伴於清新的牛油果 mousse 、濃郁的山羊芝士及開胃的番茄 salsa,是會讓人吃不停口的小食。

另一款 Albondigas ($50) 原來是 lamb meatballs,豬肉丸子吃得多,羊肉造的還是第一次,入口肉質比想像中鬆軟,亦帶一點羶香,配合細碎的鵝肝粒、walnut 及 chickpeas 同吃,很不錯。

這裡的 menu 其實只是張 A3 Size 紙,一共三十多款選擇,而菜式的分類描述明顯花過心思,如 「SEA food, share food」代表海鮮類、「BARBECUE inspired」即燒烤類、「SWEET Endings」則是甜魔們最喜歡的環節了,每項分類都會跟上一個 Model / Series 號碼,Series 100 / 2000 / 3000 / 6000,我們看得不明白,向店員查問後,才發現原來純粹跟菜式編號有關。 Squid and Saffron Mussels ($85) 是「SEA food, share food」四款選擇之一,顧名思義就是墨魚青口拼盤,擺盤相當別緻,青口好吃,但也不要遺漏那伴碟的香口爆谷。

據知 Sal Curioso 很著重 food sharing 這概念,所以部份主菜都是大堆頭製作以供客人共享,例如招牌的 Molasses Sucking pigs ($130 per 100g),燒乳豬肉嫩味美,火候控制恰當下,外皮有少許燶身,但仍帶點微脆口感,再以糖煮過的生果配碟,賣相更加吸引。

我很欣賞主廚 Shaun Anthony 的心思,食物賣相全都充滿驚喜的,這一道 Seared Tuna ($90) 也不例外,吞拿魚中心位置呈嫩紅色,立時令人食慾大增!

全晚最好吃的,我會推介 Buttermilk fried Chicken ($140 for 2 pieces),雞胸肉外表平平無奇,食落才發覺非常嫩滑,配上口味截然不同的粟米脆球,很簡單,但卻能做出驚喜。

另一道 Green Chilli Charred Organic Chicken ($275) 亦相當有創意,大家竟一致覺得味道很像中式豉油雞,那些黑色一支支的是 squid wafers,很鬆脆,有點像炸魚皮,配汁則是菠蘿汁,將以上三個元素歸納,就是「當豉油雞和炸魚皮遇上菠蘿汁」?究竟我響度講緊乜?

跟之前的菜式相比,Smoked BBQ ribs, tamatos and chickpea (half $200) 就不太推薦了,肉有點嚡,味道亦不怎麼突出。

主菜過後,換來了七款甜品,價錢由 $25 至 $90 不等,個人覺得 Potted Key Lime Pie ($80) 和 Fried Leche Bread Pudding ($90) 都不錯,但最喜歡的必定是 Peanut Butter ($90),雖然很重口味,又很肥。

Sal Curioso 價位出奇地不貴,除主菜需 $200 - $400 外,大部份菜式都在 $100 以內,而且全日不設服務費,七位以上的話才需附加 5% gratuity,此安排也算合理。

Good for Friday night drinks, with tapas to boot. Quite funky look, good bar area and good selection of wines and cocktails. Open kitchen is nice to see and its well laid out. we selected a few dishes to accompany the wine : slow roasted pork belly was was very good, moist, and tasty, could have done with a little more of it for the price. For dessert Chocolate Popsicles and Peanut Butter dessert (both good). One of us thought it was overly sweet. Service was patchy as they were busy and a bit overworked. Adding one more wait staff to the team would solve that. But very friendly and helpful when we could get attention, so overall, a happy visit. Dishes could be a touch more generous for the price but given the location and fact its a food/drink combination place, overall ok.
