Won a coupon as the table price at a recent dinner, for 2 Executive lunch sets at Aspasia of Luxe Manor. Had considered staying at this hotel before but never got around to it, so we decided to try the restaurant. It is a little out of the way (especially from someone who rarely leaves HK Island for meals), even for TST, but I drove and they had free valet parking (if you dine at the restaurant), so that was handy although it did mean I could not drink. The decoration was so so (I am not a fan of
It is a little out of the way (especially from someone who rarely leaves HK Island for meals), even for TST, but I drove and they had free valet parking (if you dine at the restaurant), so that was handy although it did mean I could not drink.
The decoration was so so (I am not a fan of low ceilings), furniture was loud and attention-seeking but rather crudely made. The chairs were uncomfortable (too high, too shallow), and the tablecloths overwashed and hence lumpy. The piped music was the standard elevator-music affair which was not particularly interesting.
But there the negative comments end. And not too negative I hope.
The service was good - the waiters and waitresses were quiet & discreet, yet could easily be summoned when needed. A touch of class there.
Then there comes the food. Our coupons were for 2 executive set lunches, so that is what we had. But the menu was so extensive (see my attached photos) that there was no need to even look at the a la carte menu. You get the choice for 2-4 courses plus tea and coffee, and we decided to go all out for the 4 courses (appetiser, pasta/other light dish, main course, dessert).
First, the bread - the crust was thin, the inside hot & soft. Although I wasn't particularly hungry that day we finished all our bread, dipped in the delicate and good quality olive oil provided.
Me and my friend chose the following dishes (see photos):
Appetiser:
- Artichoke soup with ravioli
- Parma ham with White Asparagus and Red Wine Reduction - it was sprinkled with very fresh arugula, very crisp
Second dish:
- Pizza with Buffalo Mozzarella Cheese & Speck Ham - thin crispy crust, wonderful
- Angel Hair with Gurnard Fish and Sundried Tomato - it was delicately flavoured and the fish not "fishy" at all. The angel hair was however just slightly overcooked and not al dente.
Main course:
- Wagyu Beef Sirloin with Deep-Fried Potato, Celery Salad & Marsala Sauce - There was no celery salad? Maybe they forgot to add it. The waiter forgot to ask how well done we wanted the Wagyu beef, and it came medium rare which was good, except that my friend doesn't like blood, so had to ask for it to be cooked a bit longer. The dish came with a couple of pieces of interesting potato chip with skin oblong in shape, and very tasty.
- Veal Filet & Veal Cheek with Baby Carrot, Mashed Potato & Marsala Sauce - Hm... maybe they are low on vegetables today. There was no baby carrot with the veal either. The veal filet and cheek were very tender, although the sauce was unsurprising.
Although our vouchers included dessert, we did not ask for it as we were just too full. My friend did order a latte which came steaming hot (which most restaurants don't manage for some reason, so more points there). I ordered tea which came with hot cream/milk, again a plus.
The portions were small and delicate, which I like. I would come again for dinner one day, preferably when someone else drives so I could have some wine. But despite the decor, the service and food were well worth it. Even if we did pay it would only have been HKD750 for 2 including service if we only wanted food.
