- Made a reservation before, so was setaed very quickly- noisy restaurant, so unless you are seated at the back seats, it is better to eat with friends here- the service has been constantly good everytime I went- I only go for lunches because they have good dealsRecommend:Toro Rice- The toro rice is my favorite in this restaurant. It is also always part of the lunch set menu (around 150-200HKD), so after the salad + soup, you feel like you are getting your money's worth. - The toro rice is mixed with sesame, white spring onion and probably pink sugar, thus the toro rice is very sweet. Love itBeef rice with egg in a pot"- I hate green pepper, so I ask them to take it out everytime I order this dish- There was one time when the dish was not served with green pepper, but I could still taste it in the beef, so even though you may order it without the green pepper, the dish may still have the taste- the dish has been very constant, the beef is always cooked just right and the onions go well with the beef. There is also always just enough sauce for the rice.- My friends usually order toro rice or this dishThey also offer yakitori sets here for lunch. The sets include i think around 10 different yakitoris for around 200 HKD.Although I personally don't think the yakitori here is their strong suit, the yakitori is decent enough to satisfy cravings. The few I like:Chicken meatball- sauce reminds me of the Ajitommi meatball sauce- taste a little floury, but good enoughOther decent yakitori include: chicken wing yakitori and the corn yakitoriDesertI am very particular with my green tea ice cream. I think the Haagan Daaz one is good, but if it was sweeter, it would be better. This restaurant has the Japanese sweet type. So if you like this kind of Green Tea ice cream, you can order it for desert.…
John, thanks for the treat!…
My friend liked this place - it's my 2nd time visiting this place. They got lunch menu of great varities. I ordered the signature Yakitori lunch set that has included grilled mushroom, scalops, meat balls, chicken meatballs and beacon rolls. The chicken/meat balls were cold and tasteless, not juicy or tasty as the quality I tried last time. The mushroom was a bit bitter :(.Services was great here, but not the food though. …
Looking at their extensive menu downstairs... I had high hopes for this place. We arrived at 7.30 to find ourselves the only other customers. But after a while the restaurant slowly filled up even on a tuesday night. After browsing through the menu, I picked for myself a fish soup, hamachi sashimi, asparagus yakitori and mushroom yakitori, whilst my friend picked the edamame, scallop skewers and beef and enoki yakitori.Fish SoupThis soup was a creamy white colour, and it was quite thick/rich in consistency - I couldn't help but wonder if they added something like cornstarch...but I couldn't tell....There was a piece of silken tofu and a fish fillet rolled with spinach. The fish was actually not cooked well - the meat was still transparent on the inside! The soup could've been hotter, whilst less thick and it was slightly too 'fishy' in taste...The tofu was very good and smooth though. HamachiI was shocked by its serving! For $120 this is certainly quite 'cheap', but the sashimi I thought was not cold enough, and I think I would've preferred them to be more thinly sliced, rather than a huge chunk in my mouth..but this is subjective I think. EdamameI am not a fan, but these were worse than I last tried edamame, since they weren't salted so they tasted like boiled soya beans.... Asparagus YakitoriThe sauce was very good and flavourful without being too salty. But this I felt was slightly small in portion for what they were charging. Mushroom YakitoriThese were well cooked but I would prefer them to be slightly more 'burnt'. Scallop YakitoriThese were cooked till slightly rare in the middle. For its thickness, cooking them well-done would give them a tough exterior, so I thought it was acceptable that they didn't cook them through to the center. Beef rolled with enoki yakitoriThese took way too long to be prepared - i have a feeling they forgot our order because I had to remind them twice....Anyway, taste wise it was okay (due to the sauce) but the beef was too over-cooked. It looked and tasted tough - no good at all! I expected much more from Hanagushi - as it has been in LKF for such a long time and with so many patrons even on a tuesday night... I can forgive over-done beef but not raw fish in a "fish soup"....:(…
For some reasons, this place is not THAT great, but it's always packed. Today, I ordered curry pork chop with rice. The set lunch was huge! But it was quite delicious. Though it would be better if they cut down the portion, because it's a waste. One down side is that there is never enough waitresses around. You always have to wait a long time before someone comes to offer assistance.…
After our happy hour dessert at Sift, it was time for something light! Japanese was the best choice in my opinion. It has been a while since I last had a meal here and my previous two visits were for lunch so I was up for some surprises tonight. The entrance of the place is hiding to the right of the staircase on the first floor and once you entered, expect to be greeted by waiting staff very soon after. As soon as you turn open the menu, you would soon realize that this place specializes in yakitori. However, since we were here for something light , we opted for less meaty dishes. With the wide selection of items on the menu, I had to order a beer to calm myself down. Yeah, I know, just an excuse, but a darn good excuse right?(1) Daily Special Fish SoupThe staff highly recommended it when we were ordering and I am glad we trusted her. It was very well prepared with very rich and fresh fish taste in every spoonful. The milky color of the soup was definitely a result of long cooking / preparation time and not of coloring in my opinion. There was a piece of tofu sitting at the bottom of the bowl and it complimented the smoothness of the tofu as well as the silky smooth texture of the soup! Two thumbs up! The only negative thing is that it is a daily special item so try your luck next time.(2) Yellowtail SushiAmong the many choices of fish, I selected yellowtail not because I heart this fish in particular but because the staff mentioned about having a daily special of Grilled Yellowtail Head. Daily special usually translate to freshly arrived items with a marked up price tag, so I assumed that yellowtail sushi would be from portion of the freshly arrived fish as well. Not certain if my logic was right but that was exactly what I was thinking when placing the order. However, it was a fair dish only; it was relative fresh in the sense that it likely arrived in the early afternoon or even in the morning kind of fresh. Maybe my logic needs some tweaking ... humm ... (whatever that means ... )(3) Deep Fried Soft Bean Curd (Agedashi Tofu)Another favourite dish of mine in any Japanese restaurants. The fried tofu was fair with a light batter on the outer layer and a very soft interior. What I really liked about this dish being served was the sauce and the generous portion of garnishes especially the thinly sliced dried bonito fish flakes. Not bad at all.(4) Grilled Cod Fish SAKYO StyleThe size of the grilled cod provided a very heavy dose of Omega 3 for me! Although it was huge, I finished all of it because it was good. The sauce used was not as rich and strong as I hoped. It was unfortunate that we were there for a light menu so did not order any rice. I could have consumed two bowls of rice with this single dish! Yummy!(5) Udon soup with TempuraThe udon was not chewy at all and the tempura batter was rather "hard" because it was slightly overcooked in my opinion. Nothing surprising from this bowl of noodle except for the soup which was rather comforting to consume because it was slightly sweet (and hot) but not overly strong with the soy sauce flavor.Likes: * Fish Soup - very good ! Strong and Rich in fish taste * Grilled Cod * Agedashi Tofu - love the dried Bonito flakesDislikes: * Udon - too soft * Yellowtail sushi - not as fresh as I hoped due to my faulted logic Original Blog: http://jason-bonvivant.blogspot.com/2009/08/hanagushi-yakitori.html…
I sometimes come to have lunch with colleagues here and for dinner with boyfriend. If you are to lunch here, better reserve in advance as it is sometimes full-house, even for Wednesdays or Thursdays. For dinner, it is usually the case that no reservation is necessary.Food quality is great, value for money (if you are talking about a decent lunch/ dinner for Japanese food, lunch is usually below HK$200 for sets and dinner may vary depending on what you ordered but generally around HK$250-300 per person), especially for sashimi. They have some special desert too like tofu cake if I remember correctly. It tastes quite like tofu, I would say, a fresh choice for desert.Anyway, I would recommend this for gathering with friends or dinners for couples.…
