Having been to Sen-Ryo twice now I guess I\'ve had a clue what to write here. A fan of sushi joints in Causeway Bay, I\'d say having one in TaiKooShing is a wonderful thing (actually Genki opened a few months ago in Kornhill)
Back to the food. It\'s certainly about quality here. The rice is hand-made into smaller knobs and sits on plate at room temperature. Whatever goes on top of them are mostly cool, not fridge cold, or just out of the freezer. The temperature doesn\'t give me the chill like some other popular sushi joints.
There is a \"Plats du Jour\" menu every day (today\'s specials). Often times quantities are limited. If you know what your favorite fish looks like fresh, you\'ll recognize it front and center as a centerpiece right in front when you sit down in front of the sushi bar. If not, it\'s written in the menu.
We started with the \"sweet egg\"-- they make their own, with just enough hint of mirin and flakes of shiso on one end. Sweet but not cloying and the texture is superb, like a soft pillow..
Make sure you order one (if not more). Soft shell crab handroll. Being in the same group of Genki Sushi (hence the Eel sauce package mentioned) soft shell crab handroll is wonderful. Served with sufficient amount of sauce and HALF A CRAB, fresh fried per order. The seaweed is always crisp. And if the crab is not hot enough, feel free to take it back.
Yellowtail, Tuna, Mackeral, butterfish, sablefish, sea-urchin and salmon roe sushi later, we ordered Ark-shell clam, which was on the menu the first time but not on the menu this time...we requested them to check whether there are any... Lucky us. They do. Surprisingly crunchy like freshly shucked. The saltiness and sweetness mixed together. Served in two different styles, and it\'s not more than 30 dollars for that.
Once again, it\'s quality food, and I want to emphasize that the limited choice is all the more reason they need to do it well-- they sell less choices but each one they do it well... wouldnt it be better than serving 40 plus choices of sushi with half thawed fish and disproportional fish and rice that fill you up while you can hardly taste what you ate?!
Sen-Ryo is a place to embrace freshness of sushi at an affordable price. If you want to try something different from other sushi joints, give it a try.
