Yummy Pasta!
Bene Italian
2011-07-29
We walked around a bit and decided to try this place. I love the cute decor, the color scheme, and the open kitchen. As for the food? We just hoped for the best Since I had to take care of my baby, I didn't photograph the foccacia, tomato soup, and the caesar salad from the set lunch. But I remember liking them all.SC ordered squid ink seafood pasta in white wine sauce. It's simple yet super flavorful! Perfectly cooked seafood and pasta. Light and simple but still tasty broth. It was perfect for the hot and sticky weather. I was very pleasantly surprised.I ordered creamy mushroom, bacon and egg yolk pasta. A tad heavy for the weather, but I only had myself to blame for not being able to resist ordering something creamy. I love it. Again, perfectly cooked pasta with delicious sauce. We decided to add a bit more dollars to get a dessert with coffee to share. The caramel cake's lovely. Soft, moist, with just enough bitterness and tang from the raspberry and blueberry. The coffee's Lavazza and I like it (since it's served with cream on the side, I think I like cream more than coffee? hehehe).A very lovely lunch, we'd definitely visit again when we're in Sha Tin.…查看更多

Very Dark Chocolate Froyo
Yo Mama
2011-03-30
Look at the above cup from Yo Mama! It's so dark! Black, almost. How could I not give it a try? I chose chewy mochi and oreo crumbs as toppings. How was it?It surely didn't taste like yogurt, it didn't even taste like dark chocolate ice cream...it's more like...chocolate paste.Does it mean that it's bad? It's not too bad, but if you're expecting a mix of dark chocolate & yogurt flavor, this is not it.http://mochachocolatarita.blogspot.com/…查看更多

Very Satisfying Lunch, Great Value for Money!
泰之選泰國菜館
2011-03-30
This is a place we randomly tried in Kowloon city. We didn't check openrice first to see if it's famous, and we didn't check which dishes to order. We thought, what the heck, we're hungry, they serve food. and there's no queue. We're good.Working around Central, I hardly find any set lunch priced below HK$50 anymore...so I was very happy to see this HK$35 set lunch, serves with a drink! Oh yes!I love the spicy minced meat cooked with Thai sweet basil...and the takeaway Thai food joint we always order lunch from do quite a good version of it, and it comes with rice. I could imagine the spicy goodness stir fried with flat rice noodles...but what made me so ecstatic was...this place serves it......wait for it...fried with instant noodles! My absolute favorite! Tasty tasty tasty!Another favorite of mine, stir fried rice noodles, Thai style, fried "wet", which means, with gravy. Soft, slightly chewy, rice noodles with lots of yummy goodies swimming in tasty, garlicky gravy. Yum!I didn't expect the dishes to have vegetables in them, so, in a desperate attempt to be "healthy", we ordered a mixed vegetables with shrimp paste stir fry dish. Again...very tasty! The drinks...refreshing iced longan.Thai "cendol"...I love the cendol, it's thinner and slightly more chewy than Indonesian ones....HK$35 set lunches! LOVE! Can't wait to go back and try their dinner.http://mochachocolatarita.blogspot.com/…查看更多

More Like Sorbet
Yogurtime
2011-03-30
Do you remember these adorable little jewels?I remember not liking them when I was a kid. What? A kid who doesn't like sugar? Was I mad?Well, I was the kind of kid who'd prefer a fried chicken drumstick than sweets, you see.A budding salt lover I was.But now...Sigh.Now I love them! Not that I need the additional sugar in my diet...At first I picked them as my froyo topping because they look cute, the staff pointed out that they taste exceptionally yummy with froyo. He's right.Love the crunch and slight savoriness of the cookie base and adore the sweetness from the sugary top.I picked raspberry and chocolate-banana froyo that day.Because I love the colors ^_^'They taste more like sorbet than froyo. But still...don't you think they look cute?http://mochachocolatarita.blogspot.com/…查看更多

Gorgeous Mango Mille Feuille
沛公甜品
2011-03-30
Yesterday, we celebrated a friend's birthday and ended up dinner with this gorgeous cake.Look at them roses! They aren't perfect, the cream and layering of the cake looks a bit sloppy and some mango slices were a bit..wilted? But we think that they still look pretty damn amazing! We walked right pass the dessert store, and immediately abandoned any other cake ideas that we had and went for it. We just hoped it tastes good.\And it did taste good. The layered crepes were so thin, it was so easy to cut through, it's creamy with just enough sweetness, not overwhelming, and there were bits of mango in it too. The only unfortunate bit was some mango slices with stringy bits from the mango pit, but other than that, it wasn't bad at all. Despite being totally stuffed from dinner, we still managed to make room for this sweet & creamy treat.…查看更多

Superb Fries, Yummy Onion Soup
Bouchon Bistro Francais
2011-03-30
Lovely place!Decent bread, lovely soft and creamy butter. The country pate and toasted baguette with a side salad was not my favorite. The pate was not bad, but the already cold toasted baguette didn't do it for me.The onion soup was absolutely delicious!Sweet and hearty. Love it!There were some other dishes that I didn't get to taste, so I won't comment, but look at this gorgeous tomato salad with goat cheese and balsamic dressing..I kinda regretted that I didn't order that ^_^'The roast of the day was roast beef served with a side of fries. The beef, despite looking beautifully cooked, was dry and chewy. The side of fries, on the other hand, was a winner! They're well seasoned, crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Delicious! Our friends who ordered the seared salmon with spinach and lemon butter sauce both mentioned that the fish was overcooked. The creamy mushroom tagliatelle looked fantastic...But I always pick meat over meatless, sometimes to my detriment...I ordered steak tartar with french fries. It arrived looking amazing......and it has some really good flavors. There was a good balance of rich, creamy, salty, and acid, but the meatiness was kind of lost somewhere. The fries were still fantastic though. I finished each and every single piece. To sum up, my favorites are the fries, the onion soup, and the charming place. I'd go back for those and maybe try their dessert and pasta.http://mochachocolatarita.blogspot.com/…查看更多

Best yunnan noodle shop in Hong Kong?
星林居雲南米線餐廳
2011-01-21
As a huge Nam Kee fan, I've previously mentioned that Nam Kee Spring Roll Noodles serves the best mai sin (rice noodle soup) ever!Uh oh, uh oh...after trying this place...whom a friend christened as "the best yunnan noodle shop in the whole wide...Hong Kong", will I still feel the same about Nam Kee?This place lets you customize your order. What would you like with your noodles? How hot? How sour? No corriander? Extra tissue? No problem! They've got all the options in this little piece of paper.Soon, my order arrived...and gasp!Look at this bowl overflowing with beauties!Now..let's see...the mai sin (rice noodles), if it's limp or too swollen, I'd hate this place forever and won't consider coming back.It was wonderfully chewy. Yes!...and it has all the bits that I love...preserved veggie, beancurd sheets, beansprouts, chives...in a super super duper tasty broth. I chose "normal sour" and "little spicy" and it was perfect for me. I have to say that the broth here is a lot tastier than the one in Nam Kee. As always, don't count on me on knowing authenticity of Yunnan noodle broth, I just know that this one is richer, deeper, bolder and meatier than Nam Kee's. The kind that gives you a kick in the stomach.LOVE IT.Now...the "accessories", the sliced pork meat. Tender, juicy, super tasty. Delicious! The "soft bone" pork. Absolutely fantastic. Deeply flavored (what?), super rich!.and one of my favorite...pig intestines! Absolutely delicious!So...would this noodle replace Nam Kee's position as the best mai sin noodles soup ever in my list? Hmmm, almost. SC said, but Nam Kee's got that yummy spring rolls that I love...OK, I am torn.I'll go to Nam Kee for the spring rolls and I'll go to this place for a good kick.http://mochachocolatarita.blogspot.com…查看更多

Lovely Sunday Brunch
Isola Bar & Grill
2011-01-11
Tried our luck at Isola without booking, lucky we got a table as it was always fully booked when I called. Here's the bread basket, which wasn't served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar automatically (you have to ask for it).Not bad, but nothing extraordinary. My pile of goodies from the antipasto buffet..and my favorite from the spread, the ox tongue. Tender and super flavorful. The main courses get served once you've finished with your appetizer. But if you're like me (keep hovering around the buffet line), you could request for your main course to be served as you continue to have your appetizer. The steak's tender, juicy and flavorful. Yummy!I don't normally order pasta as a side dish, but I have a certain weakness for tagliatelle, and this one is delicious! Perfectly cooked pasta + tasty ragout meat sauce = winner!...I went crazy at the dessert station. Most exceeded my (reasonably low?) expectations. My favorites were the chocolate tart and chocolate eclair. If I told you that I don't like chocolate, would you believe me?No?Good. You shouldn't ^_^Consume the sweets with a cup of good coffee......what a great Sunday!…查看更多

Lunch with A View
Wooloomooloo Prime
2010-12-30
Wooloomooloo Prime boasts impressive floor-to-ceiling multi million dollar view of the fragrant harbour.I bet the view would be even more impressive at night. The decor is modern and chic...let's see if the food is good.We ordered their Christmas Set Lunch menu, priced at HK$288 per person plus service charge (not including drinks). The meal started with herb and tomato bread, which was served warm. It's crusty on the outside, perfectly fluffy and soft on the inside. Love it.I was absolutely happy with the Asparagus, pancetta and poached egg salad with Bearnaise sauce. If you thought nothing is sexier than seeing yolk running out of a perfectly poached egg, try seeing it oozing onto a pile of bacon. Yum!The shellfish salad featuring yabby, mussels, shrimp, greens and heart of palms in mustard dressing was...alright. But I guess it's a bit unfair of me, a meat and egg yolk lover, to compare this to the sexiness of the poached egg salad ^_*The raspberry mint iced tea was refreshing, excellent for the surprisingly hot winter day.I am a sucker for lychee drinks, so I ordered their cool mint mocktail, which had canned lychee chunks, lychee juice, soda water, ginger ale and fresh mint. Again, refreshing.Love the cream of wild mushrooms soup, which was served with truffle oil and garlic croutons. Super tasty! Plus, call me crazy, but I adore the rich golden tinge of this mushroom soup, it's not the normal grey concoction we usually get.The Australian lamb fillet was super delicious. Everything on the plate was perfectly cooked. Ultra tender meat, flavorful ratatouille, tasty red wine sauce. Lovely! We were a bit disappointed by the grilled Australian rib eye steak. This corner of the steak seemed nicely cooked (we ordered medium), but the rest of the steak was sadly overcooked. The roasted potatoes and vegetables cpuld use a lot more seasoning and the peppercorn sauce on the steak did nothing to save the overcooked meat. The traditional Christmas pudding with Brandy, Cinnamon and Raisin Ice cream was delightful. Wonderfully chewy, sticky and sweet spiced pudding, absolutely perfect with the ice cream. The mango custard cheesecake with red fruit compote and tuille was equally lovely. Rich and creamy goodness on a plate.Although we did appreciate our window seat overlooking the beautiful view of Hong Kong harbour, the heat (even in winter!) was so unbearable, we were drenched in sweat even after peeling our layers of clothing. So unsexy, it's not even funny! We did voice our concern to the manager, who joked that he should start selling sunglasses and tanning oil (I suggested truffle oil?) and he cranked up the air con immediately. We (and our sweaty asses) truly appreciated his prompt action.…查看更多

Great Value Lunch
Bistecca Italian Steak House
2010-12-24
We went to Bistecca for lunch, as I heard that the lunch include antipasto and dessert buffet.I am a sucker for buffet. Tell me there's a buffet, I'll be there Look at this beautiful spread.Delicious looking antipasto...come to mama!Hello, sweetnesses...I'll be right back! What did I get from the spread?Anything and everything!A few batches of them.My favorite from the antipasto spread? The ham and melon combo, spicy salami, marinated mushrooms, eggplant and the chunks of bread. This place is a steak house, but I was not impressed by their hanger steak main course served during lunch time.Despite how gorgeous it looked, it was not charred enough, tender enough, juicy enough or tasty enough. Hmmm, maybe I am not the type of person who appreciates subtle flavors?Surprisingly, we were very pleased with the whole grilled seabass.Utterly surprised, in the best way. Perfectly cooked, very well seasoned, fresh, truly delightful!I tried everything from the dessert spread.Love every single one.I should've ordered a cup of hot tea or coffee to polish this plate off.Yum!Less than HK$200 per person, including antipasto and dessert buffet. Went back a couple of times and tried the lamb and burger too. Love the lamb!…查看更多

Yummy Oysters, Pasta & Ice Cream
Casa Fina Seafood & Oyster Bar
2010-12-14
Buy-one-get-one-free oysters, Namibia, Scottish Rock and French oysters. I especially love the French ones. Sweet, crunchy and fresh...the flavors transported me to a beautiful place by the sea....blablabla...gosh, stop it. This is not my style. They're yummy.OK. That sounds more like me.Heheheh.As an appetizer, we ordered the calamari.Perfectly cooked, tender calamari rings, the breading isn't the crispy type, but it's flavorful. The parmesan bits...what's not to love?...and we especially love the horseradish creamy dip. It made everything perfect. The black truffle and wild cream of mushroom soup was delightful, tasty, creamy, and there are a couple slices of black truffle in it.The lobster bisque didn't impress us. It's underseasoned and overly bitter. The soup was served with a side of nicely toasted, buttery bread. The duck liver and wild mushroom linguini was as fantastic as it sounds. Rich and earthy flavors with perfectly cooked pasta. Sold! The lamb could be a little more charred and it's a tiny bit undercooked. Other than that, it's decent and the portion is generous. The warm chocolate cake is nothing earth shattering, but it's more than adequate. Very chocolatey cake with warm chocolate liquid oozing out of the cake once you've digged into it.We were very impressed by the pumpkin ice cream. Very light, not too sweet, the pumpkin flavor was there...and it's served in a cute tiny pumpkin! How adorable! I wish the pumpkin wasn't as frozen so that we could dig into it and...consume it.I'll totally go back to try their sea urchin spaghetti and pomelo sherbet.http://mochachocolatarita.blogspot.com…查看更多

What A Feast!
FEAST (Food By EAST)
2010-12-13
We were seated at the chef's table, a gorgeous corner overlooking the "open kitchen".The meal started with a bread basket, and a savory girl that I am, I love the crispy cheese bread. We sampled some oysters from the buffet spread, which were fresh and creamy. We also had different kinds of ham, slices of melon and pickled shallots. Very refreshing. The melon brought out the best of the white wine we had.I adore the idea of the Goats Curd and Mushroom Tartlet with Pancetta Crumble and Yellow Pepper Jam since I am a big fan of savory pastries. The yellow pepper jam was a highlight of the dish, it gives the much needed touch of sweetness to balance the rest of the savory ingredients. The name "Lobster" Tea, Foam, Grilled, and Ice Cream aroused our curiosity. Lobster? Ice cream? Really? Yes, and it was fantastic! We're supposed to start with the subtly flavored lobster tea, which was light and refreshing. The lobster foam was light in texture, but bursting with flavors of a good lobster bisque. If I didn't think about my company, I would've licked the bowl clean! The grilled lobster was succulent and perfectly cooked, and the lobster ice cream? Satiny smooth, rich and creamy goodness! We had a rockmelon lime sherbet. I am a huge fan of melon. But I never thought of pairing citrus with melon. I always thought of melon as a "sweet" fruit and adding citrus would ruin it. Clearly, I was wrong. The addition of citrus made this combination perfect as a palate cleanser. I was ready for our next course. When the next dish arrived, I thought we were getting a rich and moist chocolate cake! Obviously, I was wrong. Heheheh. Call me crazy, but I love being deceived by appearances. It's Vanilla Braised Beef Cheek with Celeriac Ravioli and Leek Consomme. The beef was impossibly tender! It's a result of hours and hours of braising. I had always been skeptical on the trend of cooking savory dishes with vanilla. However, the touch vanilla of vanilla in this dish is subtle, just the right amount to enhance the dish without being overwhelming.Ready for something sweet? The chef insisted that we start with the shot.Aptly named Snap Crakle and Fruit Pop, it "exploded" in our mouth in a plethora of fruitiness. How playful! How creative! The meal ended with a plate of petit fours. It was a night of delectable treats in a fabulous place.I want to try their buffet.http://mochachocolatarita.blogspot.com…查看更多

2010 Christmas Creation, Chocolate Raspberry Buche
La Maison du Chocolat
2010-12-10
Another Friday indulgence for me, Chocolate Raspberry Bûche, La Maison du Chocolate's Christmas 2010 creation. What can I say? It's every bit as fantastic as it looks! A perfect balance of textures and flavors. Soft, smooth, crunchy, chewy, sweet, rich, chocolatey, sharp, with an explosion of runny tangy raspberry in the middle. Wonderful! As it's super hard for me to get just one...we also ordered the Chestnut cake. The combination of textures and chestnut flavor is there...but in comparison to the chocolate raspberry bûche, this is a lot more...subtle.TGIF!http://mochachocolatarita.blogspot.com…查看更多

Deliciously Spicy!
KK正宗印度餐廳
2010-11-23
We're so glad we've stumbled upon this precious place. It's tucked away in a corner of a housing estate's small shopping complex up the hills in Kwai Chung. It's humbly decorated, but spacious and comfy. As we entered the place, we were welcomed by the scent of spices and the friendly greetings from the owners. We ordered mutton biryani and we requested spicy. The lady owner gave me an eye, but decided not to comment on my choice. When we tasted it, we understood what "the eye" mean. It's super spicy and I love love love it! Absolutely delicious. The combination of spices, the hearty mutton pieces, the sweetness of raisins, the refreshing touch of fresh ginger and tomatoes, and the heat...it was perfect for me. But if you can't handle heat, and yes this was hot, opt for mild or medium. We also ordered beef korma and butter naan. The portion of the beef korma's kinda small, but it tastes heavenly! Slightly sweet, creamy and nutty! The butter naan disappointed us though. It's not light, fluffy, nor buttery...it's flat, greasy and chewy. I'd order something else next time.I love the scent and flavor of fresh mint, and this sweet mint lassi's perfect! Sweet, rich, creamy, and refreshing at the same time. A perfect companion for the super spicy lunch.Allow some time to take a long nap due to the food coma http://mochachocolatarita.blogspot.com/…查看更多

Far from Being Blown Away
L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon
2010-09-12
I was in the mood for a splurge, and brought my visiting sis and my giant belly to L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon for lunch. We've heard so much about this place, so, we were excited and expected to be blown away.I picked the cheese bread, bacon baguette and croissant from the bread basket. The mini size allows us to taste a few pieces without feeling too stuffed before the meal even began. The cheese bread was soft, fluffy and wonderfully savory. The croissant was buttery, flaky and delicious, but the bacon baguette was way too hard...it was closer to a cracker than a baguette. We were impressed by the amuse bouche. So impressed, we forgot to ask what it was (opps) The base was slightly sweet, soupy and custardy, and the foam on top complemented the base perfectly.I had the Cromesqui de Riz (crispy risotto finger with chorizo and parmesan cheese, served with tomato concasse and pesto) as an appetizer. The croquette-ish risotto was crispy on the outside, I wish it was a little creamier and tastier on the inside. The tomato and salad with pesto dressing made the dish. It was ok, but we weren't too impressed. My sis had the Le Foie Gras de Canard (duck foie gras terrine with figs marmalade and spices). The dish could use a little something more to balance the sweetness and creaminess of the terrine. Although the fresh fig slices gave the dish a nice refreshing touch, and the crackers served with the dish helped, it was still missing a little punch. Ah wells, maybe I am just not used to subtle flavors? The La Chataigne (chestnut soup with mushrooms and chicken mousse dumplings) was one of the highlights. I absolutely love it! Smooth, sweet, and creamy with delicate little dumplings and tasty bits of mushrooms. It was perfection. Hands down, one of the best soup I've ever had!The Le Veau (veal fillet with sage and caramelized vegetables from the South of France) disappointed us. Despite looking perfectly cooked, the veal pieces were not seasoned well, felt a bit dry and they were too chewy, up to the point where we had to ask for a different knife to cut through them. There was nothing impressive about the caramelized vegetables served with it too.The Le Beuf (cheek of beef braised with red wine, parmesan polenta and Taggiasche black olives) was delicious. The meat was unbelievably tender and flavorful, the polenta was rich and creamy, and the black olives made the dish livelier. It was a tad too rich and creamy for the hot weather though, a few bites and you'd feel ugh.We ordered the La Poire (chocolate caramel tart with pear sorbet), the pastry base was crispy, maybe a little too crispy? The chocolate filling was nice and smooth, the pear sorbet was pretty refreshing and the tuille was paper thin and lovely. It was quite nice.I picked two items from the dessert trolley, which was chocolate cake and the rum cake. Both were super duper sweet, wayyyy too sweet for my taste, served with sweet-ish whipped cream. They were so sweet, I only managed to have just a couple of tiny bites from both. I was rather disappointed that our server didn't ask or say a word despite seeing how we left most of the dessert untouched.I ordered the regular coffee to end my meal, and thank God I didn't add any sugar, as there were more sweetness coming ;)I am not a big fan of macarons, of which I normally couldn't taste anything but sweetness, but this time I could taste the pistachio flavor. The silver chocolates were nothing I'd miss, but the fruit pate cubes were delightfully fruity. There were a couple more of service related weirdness. Sometimes, when serving my sis' dish, instead of explaining the dish to her, our server explained the dish to me, and proceeded to say "enjoy!" again, to me, not my sis (???). When I spilled a small pile of tomato concasse on the table, the servers didn't clean the unsightly spill even when they were clearing our plates. We had to ask one of them to clean the spillage. I know the spillage was my fault, but...still. Weird. There were a couple of hits, some misses, but we were far from being blown away. Were our expectation too high? Is our palate not sophisticated enough? Hmm, maybe...But I believe that if it's good food, we'd enjoy it, and for HK$650 per person price tag, we didn't enjoy this meal as much as we wish to.http://mochachocolatarita.blogspot.com…查看更多

HK Epicurus I've only been here twice ~ once a few years ago when it first opened, and then I think last year sometime for another lunch (can't remember when I last reviewed it lol )Despite being managed by the same local group in HK/Macau, the Robuchon a la Galera's lunch I had last year, TASTED a lot lot lot better. I said TASTED, because that meal was slightly more old school and nothing was extraordinary and innovative, except for the 'taste' part of the equation.... the dishes and the whole room looked worn out and tired, the Mandarin speaking waitresses were anything but of Michelin 3 Stars standards, unless they speak better French than English. But the COOKING there, the TASTE, was way better than here... Even their bread basket and the famous mash tasted better, despite looking exactly the same! Anyway I am not sure I am keen to return here for dinner to gamble..

Little Meg HI Mochachocholatarita, I completely agree with you and HKE on Robuchon. I remember I went to Robuchon HK when it first opened for tasting dinner, and repeated every year for consecutively 3 years. The quality of the food, executions, and service got worse each time. In fact the last dinner I had there was down right horrible that I stopped going there altogether. When I was invited by my friends to have lunch there last year, I didn't see any improvement in any aspect.. The service was very unprofessional as if the staff have not received any proper training. This is probably the worst Robuchon outlet I have tried. The one in Manhattan, Tokyo, and London are SOOO MUCH better!Little Meg
