Around 5.30 today I wandered down my street and saw that Heirloom was having a soft opening.. their cake display has grown with a much better selection than before.. and at better prices! The staff seem pretty new and generally pretty nice. Seeing so many new options and feeling like I wanted lemon meringue I found a few things caught my attention..Cinnamon Swirl Bun $25 - This looked irresistable and for only 25 I wasn't going to pass it up! The bun was soft and fluffy but still dense enough, there was good flavour of cinnamon and to my surprise walnuts added a good texture balance. There was even cream cheese frosting! All in all I was super happy with this and will be back for it often!Lemon Slice $35 - The lemon slice was surprisingly good.. I'm a bit picky when it comes to lemon things, they can easily be too sweet or too tart, but this was just right. I also really liked that it didnt feel gritty but creamy and soft. My only complaint with it was that at times cracking the base was a little too difficult, but all in all very worth it I don't see why it's not priced at 25 like the other smaller items though, but I'd happily pay the extra 10..Hot Chocolate $35 - This was thoroughly dissapointing, not because it was a bad hot chocolate, I would be quite happy with it in other circumstances however I asked for it to be super chocolatey only to get home and find that it was a good centimetre or two away from even touching the top of the cup and only an average level of chocolateyness could be found.. Oh well, these are things that wouldn't be a problem if I'd eaten in, as no one would serve a mug that low when eating in.. ah the perils.. All in all it wasn't a bad visit, I could easily share the sweets between two or even three and they were of very high quality allowing me to be content with saving some for later and not being so sweet to make you sick. Perfect. If you haven't been since the new open there is also a new menu and a few other changes. Would I recommend it? So far yes, but I'd like to see how the new sandwhiches are.. I loved the old ones to death!

I have always wanted to try this place because they seem to serve the food I like.Heirloom Eatery & More is located on Hollywood Road near these funeral services, hence the sightings of Chinese Hearses parked nearby.Chinese Heare's are different to Western ones which are black and the Chinese ones are metallic blue.Anyway, the restaurant environment is nice with the sun shining through, there is a bar table in the middle if you don't get a table seat. There is seating upstairs as well. The toilet which I did not check out is really nicely decorated according to the reviews.★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★Torta Bien Rica $90:This was a toasted baguette filled with black beans, avocado, sour cream, tomato and jalapeno chili served with Sweet potato fries. Not many places serve sweet potato fries which is one of the reasons to dine here.Sweet potato fries are a popular thing in North America.I loved the baguette because it was crusty and yeasty packed with so many flavours from the creamy avocado, tangy tomato and sour cream and the kick from the jalapeno chilis. The black beans were mashed which mixed well with the other ingredients. Finally the sweet potato fries were interesting because they were savoury and sweet.★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★For people who claim charity expenses on their tax bill, they should check their receipts because there is a compulsory $1 that goes to Hagar International Charity. To be honest it should be made visible.According to the Hagar International Charity website it says:Heirloom joins Hagar in recognizing the important role that the food & beverage industry plays in economically empowering Hagar’s clients through education, on-the-job training, and career progression opportunities. At Heirloom, customers now have the option of adding HK$1 to their meal, which will directly benefit Hagar International.I was NOT given AN OPTION nor was I informed when I paid!!◎ⓢⓤⓟⓔⓡⓢⓤⓟⓔⓡⓖⓘⓡⓛ◎Price: $100Service: OKService charge: 10%Yummy factor: DeliciousNapkins provided: yesToilets: yesPortion sizes: reasonableGlass of water provided: yes◎ⓢⓤⓟⓔⓡⓢⓤⓟⓔⓡⓖⓘⓡⓛ◎

I wrote a really glowing review of this place a couple months ago, but openrice refused to publish it. I think I used a mildly bad word.Anyway, the substance of that review was that on Fridays, Heirloom had amazing fried chicken. Thick, crispy, flavorful breading; juicy chicken; buttery jalapeno cornbread; buttery corn on the cob; and a free beer! I went so far as make it *the* place I went for fried chicken. However, I'd like to report that it's totally not worth it any more. Instead of jalapeno cornbread (great) you got some dry potato salad with curry powder. Instead of corn on the cob, you got frozen veggies (corn, bell peppers, onions)-- the kind mom used to make when she stopped caring. And the chicken? Somehow it's transformed into the same fried chicken you get everywhere else-- dry and flavorless. Not terrible. But not something anyone would crave. What's more, you can't even be sure of getting the chicken. We arrived at 7pm and they only had 4 orders of chicken left. The time before that when we came at 8pm they only had 1 order! This would be more disappointing if the chicken was any good.We came here for the chicken. The five of us who ate it (only four orders, but I split one with my wife) were universally disappointed. This place is off my list. Anyone know of a good fried chicken joint?
