Overall I have to say I was disappointed. The service is poor, you have to constantly ask for them to fill up your glass of water. Even when clearing the dirty plates they do not notice that the glass is empty. If it is so difficult then just leave a resealable bottle of water on the table. Staff constantly talking to each other in a manner which means diners can hear them. For a 5 star hotel when I ask for a finger bowl to clean my hands after peeling prawns I expect to get a bowl of lemon water and a towel that can be used again after washing. I do not expect wet wipes and paper serviettes. It is also less environmentally friendly. As for the food, well over the years the variety has been reducing. There is no more sashimi. Even if you want to get some wasabi and soy sauce it is difficult and they need to go to the Japanese restaurant to get it which took about 10 minutes. Beef, snails and some other dishes taste better with it. Grill scallops were over cooked, the squid was tasteless the beef ribeye was undercooked. The Mussels had gone cold and they did not even have a plate warmer. The lobster bisque was too watery. All in all I can see the standard and quality of food dropping over the years. It is sad but the reality is what it is and I will probably not return to this outlet. …Read More

overrated Afternoon Tea
Cova Ristorante & Caffe (利園一期)

Extremely poor and very expensive. The tea was weak, almost no flavour. They use teabags so be sure to ask for more than one. Although I am no expert, I would say, in my opinion, that the scones were not thoroughly baked. Jam was tasteless. On the savoury side the mini lobster brioche was really mini. The mango in it was so sour that you could not taste the lobster. The fried item, seemed to have a taste that in my own opinion I tend to associate with used or old oil. The mango puff on the sweet side only tasted of cream and pastry, no mango which, given how sour the other mango was, was perhaps a good thing. In my opinion there was not one single redeeming feature as regards the food. …Read More

Service Without a Smile
Nanhai No.1

I really wonder these days whether service is a factor taken into consideration when determining if a restaurant should receive a Michelin Star. if it is then on that ground alone this restaurant should not have a Michelin Star.As for the food, I would say that is good. I had a set menu. The fried mushroom with supreme soy was delicious, probably the dish of the evening. The steamed Hokkaido purple butter clam with garlic and a little vermicelli was good. If anything the clam was slightly over cooked and the noodle slightly under cooked but the dish was still tasty. The braised whole abalone with goose liver was a strange combination and one which I feel does not work. The abalone was tasty and well cooked. I think it would have worked better with seasonal asparagus. The goose liver was well cooked although it needed some salt and something a little acidic to cut through the creamy sweetness. It was just that together as one dish I don't think it worked. As for service well don't get me started as there is so much that needs to change and be improved. Perhaps losing their Star would be the impetus to make the change. They can cook, it is the front of house letting them down.…Read More

service by young people with no experience. one waitress served us while eating and then when she spoke she spat the food out on to the menu on our table. when the soup came it was not hot and when I said it is not hot she argued with me that soup is not meant to be hot. when they served the food to the table they just put it down on the edge of the table. when asked why not infront of me they argued again and then said how do I know who ordered the food. they then argued again saying we should not tell them such things. in the end I was forced to walk out as their attitude was so bad. really whatever happens don't go to this place. So many other places to eat in Stanley. avoid at all cost …Read More

Sauce over Substance

Overpriced for average food and poor service. Appetisers are very small portions. Steak Tartare is okay, others are mediocre. I really dislike having to ask a restaurant purporting to be a meat specialist the weight of their steaks. It is something they should put on the menu. I also needed to ask the weight of the burger and which cuts of meat were used in the patties. This required the waitress to go to the kitchen and check with the chef as she did not know. I would expect a steak restaurant such as this to proactively market what they are doing. The hickory BBQ sauce on their flank steak was so over powering I could not taste the meat at all. They may just as well have put it over a bowl of French fries and served that. The star was meant to be the steak and it was lost. How disappointing. Desserts were sickly sweet. The peach crepe was so covered in cinnamon that all you could taste was cinnamon. Even when eating a whole slice of peach you could not taste the peach at all. As for the wines, very over priced. Also be careful. One bottle I ordered was a 2012 and they brought a 2013 and said nothing. All in all if you want a steak, go to Craftsteak on Elgin Street. Better value and certainly better cooking. …Read More

What can I say other than pretentious and underwhelming. They attempt to achieve fine dining in both taste and presentation but the flavours fail to impress and the presentation actually makes it impractical to serve or eat. The seafood salad starter was bland and the dressing was served on the side in a small plate with a teaspoon which was very difficult to scoop out. It was a very small amount of dressing. The cream of carrot soup was just too sweet. The Wagyu beef curry was not bad but served deconstructed. Thus you needed to spoon out the curry on to the rice. A ladle should have been provided but instead a soup spoon was given which made it harder to serve. The accompanying dried fruit instead of pickles was an odd combination. The rice was over cooked as well. The dessert really lacked flavour and was very soft. When the coffee was served they did not put any sugar on the table or offer any sugar. Another example where they fail to achieve their aim of fine dining at the service level as well as the food level. Basically over priced and lacking in appropriate flavour combinations or complexity. My recommendation is give it a miss.…Read More

Osaka Style Tempura
IPPOH tempura restaurant
2014-08-21
This restaurant is tucked away in Aberdeen Street. The counter only seats 8 people. I went for lunch and was surprised how reasonably priced the fixed set lunch was given that the ingredients are flown in from Japan daily. They arrive in the afternoon so dinner would be the best time to go if you want the food to be at its freshest. There is only one set menu for lunch and no a la carte. I understand that the restaurant is now deservedly popular and the earliest possible seating for dinner would be late November. Lunch is slightly better being late September. The Tempura batter is light and the seafood is expertly cooked by Chef Seki-san, son of the founder of the restaurant in Osaka. The batter locks in all of the freshness and flavour without being oily. The oil is kept at the perfect temperature in order to achieve this. While not cheap, given the skill in the preparation and the freshness of the ingredients I would say that lunch is good value.…Read More

Aged Ribeye
The Butchers Club Deli
2014-08-10
Went on Friday for the steak frites night as you can book for a party of two. Set menu of crab cakes, Ribeye and a chocolate cheesecake for dessert. Even the bread, baked in the restaurant, was tasty. The beef was the star of the show, cooked to perfection, tender, juicy and full of flavour. The only thing I would say is the air-con is weak and you are going to feel hot. Other than that I enjoyed the food and had a very good evening. …Read More

Disappointing
Jamie's Italian

From an ambience perspective the restaurant was too noisy and the tables are too close to each other. The table wobbled as either the floor was not level or the table had not been properly set up. I appreciate that the restaurant has only officially been open for 6 days but attention to detail is everything. Also the table I sat at was not that clean. They are using a design of wooden slats or planks for the table and this means there are grooves where the slats meet. These grooves were not clean and that is only after a short period of time. Tablecloths or even a paper covering have benefits from a hygiene perspective. We ordered 4 pasta dishes, three of which were seafood, clams, scallops and prawns and one was just an arrabbiata. A burger was also ordered. Three pasta dishes were the smaller portion size and one was a main course. A few minutes after the order was taken the waitress returned saying they had no seafood due to late delivery or something and we had to change the order. As we continued to question this she then said, oh now it is okay. All very odd. The starter size pasta portion is really very small so be warned. The scallops and prawns were over cooked. The Penne was also overcooked. The squid ink pasta lacked flavour although the capers and sauce were good. One pasta dish was not served hot enough although the other three were served at a good temperature. The burger was just terrible. The meat was over cooked and slightly dry. The construction of the burger was such that you could only eat it by deconstructing it and eating bits at a time. By the time we got to dessert I was still hungry. They had run out of the brownie and all in all I thought enough was enough. There are plenty of dessert places in Causeway Bay so there was no need to continue with mediocrity. …Read More
