A little underwhelming

I bumped into a friend whom I have not seen for a long time in Hong Kong and asked me to join lunch with him at Hutong. Not being familiar with the restaurant, I quickly made an internet search to find out about the menu and of course, prices. He said that Hutong is his favorite restaurant because of the view from the 28/F where it is located. He did not mention the food so that was quite foreboding. But when he said it will be his treat, I did not complain anymore. And because it was his treat, I asked him to order for me instead. Because he has been eating healthier, it was all about vegetables, tofu, fish and chicken only. No pork. Another bad sign. Sigh. He ordered a sweet-and-sour soup with slivers of tofu and enoki mushroom. Bland. Then he ordered a couple of salads, one was julienned carrots and leaks with thin fillets of fish in hot chili oil and another was shredded chicken with what appear to be julienned bamboo shoots and cucumber in a more cooling chili dressing. I love the contrast of the two salads but I would not really think of it as something special. The last dish he ordered was steamed fish in soy sauce with green peppercorn oil and fried fresh green peppercorns. A good dish, the fish light and fresh (sorry I did not get what kind of fish but could be halibut?) with the dark slighlty spicy soy sauce the yin in the fish immaculate yang whiteness. If I was paying for this meal I would have probably ordered their signature dishes. Not everything on the menu is a hit, but those that do are a home run. The star of the degustation menu is the perfectly cooked seared venison with artichoke puree and black truffles. Tender venison unbelievably melts in the mouth, with its slight gaminess complemented by the earthiness of the truffles and shaved chestnuts. Another favorite is the cauliflower mousse with salmon roe and chive sauce, surprisingly served warm and oozing with umami richness. Dessert is capped perfectly by a barley pudding with rum ice cream and cinnamon meringue. Nice cozy ambience, helpful staff and impeccable service. Only complaint, some of the waiters do not know what they are serving and struggle with the explanation. Still a nice dining experience.…Read More
